9/10 episode. The ending with the queen standing in front of the dragons was sick. Trailer for the finale looks incredible. Now we're gonna have to wait 2 more years for season 3
Hopefully, they won't take that long for season 3... I know that HBO likes for GoT and HOTD to come out in the summer. They haven't started filming yet that I know of, so next summer is highly unlikely.
Hugh Hammer's mother is Saera Targaryen! His parentage isn't directly addressed in the books but this show addition is incredibly clever. Saera was banished by her father King Jaehaerys and now her son has claimed that kings dragon. Great addition to the lore.
And Jaehaerys was Vermithor's last rider! Seems both Vermithor and Seasmoke wanted to keep things within their own respective branches of the family lol
I'm scared for Jace, he was fully right on what he said and fully right to be devastated, and I fear his desperation to prove himself will lead to him doing something drastic, maybe even reckless
Irony being that Jace has done the most so far for the cause. Got two Great Houses as allies, negotiated easy passage for them, and the sowing was his idea even if he's upset with how Rhaenyra implemented it. If they win it's largely because of Jace.
@@unc54yep this is where he is actually more like jaehareys than anyone else his great grandfather if only he were alive he wouldn’t be happy rhaenyra birthed bastards however he would’ve notice by now jace had his qualities in him than any other of rhaenyra’s children or alicent’s children.
Agreed, as an Army Veteran I can assure you she gave up her GREATEST advantage. She had the element of surprise on her side and she wasted it on a show of force
I feel like so many people watching the scene between Jace and Rhaenyra miss the point Jace was trying to make and then hate on him. He was right tho, what if those new riders just decide to switch up on them and want to have their own claim to the throne? What if Rhaenyra dies, Jace is her heir, will those men in her council and the rest of the realm that are loyal to Rhaenyra wanna fight for him? Those bastards look more Targaryen like than Jace and who is to say that the realm won't change their loyalty because of that. Let's not forget the fact that they now got dragons that are way larger than Jace's own, he would have no chance against them
Yeah, he's actually fully right. Rhaenyra is a trueborn heir, the lords of ALL the houses know that jace is a bastard. They aren't bound to serve jace and might even serve someone like Hugh who has so much bigger a dragon
Jace feels some type of way, being a Bastard himself. And I don’t blame him. Giving people they’ve never met the opportunity to take a dragon… It would definitely be hard to trust in a plan like that.
@@annbeths Jace IS absolutely right. And like he said Rhaenyra took away the last claim of legitimacy he had. He had to heard all his life he was a bastard, but Rhaenyra's proof of legitimacy of her 3 oldest sons, was that they were dragond lords, but Now she just show to everyone that bastards can ride dragons, so if anything happens to her the realm is going to suuport a bastard over the first born son of the last king? Not only that IS an issue, but he would have to fight against those bastards who are not going to be supporting Jace, no way, and his uncles. It doesnt look like the BEST of plans.
@@sarwatarannya8786 Yeah the only reason why Rhaenyra isn't on the throne is because of an unwritten sexist rule. With Jace there are very legal reasons why he shouldn't be on the throne and Rhaenyra poured oil on whatever claim he did have.
To give a brief bit of history without any spoilers, Jaehaerys Targaryen and Alysanne Targaryen were siblings and were king/queen for a long ass time. They also had way too many kids which was likely to end in some sort of sibling war. Some of their kids that have relevance in HotD are as follows: Aemon Targaryen married Jocelyn Barathion and she birthed Rhaenys - The Queen Who Never Was. She was the first grandchild of Jaehaerys. Aemon wasn't his first son but the first to actually grow up and have a kid of his own which is why some people believe she should have been queen since the crown was to pass to Aemon initially. Aemon was killed while -Jocelyn was pregnant with Rhaenys.- Rhaenys was pregnant with Laena. Baelon Targaryen and Alyssa Targaryen (Younger siblings) married and had Viserys and Daemon. Baelon was next in line after Aemon's death but died essentially from appendicitis before his father, Jaehaerys, died which is why Viserys got the crown. Daella Targaryen married Rodrik Arryn and they had Aemma Arryn, Viserys's first wife who died during childbirth in episode 1 of HotD. Daella herself died from childbirth, I can't remember if it was directly from child birth but I'm sure it was related even if months later. Saera Targaryen was a trouble maker and slept around, a lot. She eventually worked in a brothel across the narrow sea due to being abandoned by her parents. It's her that I'm sure they're referring to when Hugh talks about his mother. The 2 Dragons at the end, Vermithor and Silverwing, were King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne's dragon's respectively. They have a long ass history together (Nearly 100 years at this point) and are likely the 2 dragons that have the closest bond to one another, essentially lovers as Jaehaerys and Alysanne were to each other. Before Jaehaerys died there was an important council meeting deciding how the rules of inheritance and successions should work which boiled down to them deciding that the crown can't pass to a female or her kids while a male relative still lives. Viserys kind of overruled this when it acknowledged Rhaenyra as his successor despite a younger male sibling being born.
I was so surprised they included Saera Good summary though - only footnote that Aemon died when Rhaenys was pregnant with Laenor, not Jocelyn with Rhaenys.
@@squatlebherz4434 Yes sorry, you're right. I remember it being sad that Aemon couldn't be there for a birth but misremembered it as Rhaenys herself being born. I think it was Laena though, not Laenor. According to the wiki.
Jace had a good point, I felt bad for him. He was right to tell his mother that the silver haired bastards could make a claim also and jaces dark hair already has people questioning his legitimacy.
Mad Queen in training? Maybe. Doubt she's gonna be the same suspicious way with Rhaena as she is with Nettles(with Nettles being removed to give Rhaena the role of SS's rider.)
It was obvious that Ulf and Hugh were going to end up with dragons, but damn… the last 15-20 minutes of this episode was still so intense 😂 Vermithor is a legit monster. And Ulf’s dragon, Silverwing, is known as being docile and kind of a sweetheart lol. I feel like both riders got dragons that fit them perfectly.
@@MFBloosh completely right, but even though they ARE dragons and ‘beasts of war’ and the world of animals is brutal, I cant help but feel a little sorry for the more docile dragons that are being forced into war
@@siddharthgaur2205 Jaehaerys wasn't a pushover like Viserys though. And he definitely had a temper and knew when to use it, in political cases at least, he wasn't great with some of his kids.
It seems to me that selflessness and inner strength are what Vermithor respects. Which is why Jaehaerys was able to ride him. The first dude to come forward clearly was brave but he was also naturally being potentially perceived as greedy due to wanting to be first to try. I think this is what Vermithor disliked about him. Not condoning it though those people were all terrified but dragons are very choosy.
@@agrimmeon9308 Agreed. He punished the men who murdered his master of coin, Rego Draz(and was thought to look like his hated uncle Maegor in his fury), won "the War of a Thousand Candles"without losing a single man on his side and joined his goodfathers Rogar's war. Not to mention him goading "Stinger"into combat with him by making the alternative ten thousand times worse so he could take revenge himself.
Vermithor is so ugly and gnarled and beautiful and I love him This episode was also good for showing another example of how dragons have unique personalities. Vermithor is an older dragon who has fighting experience, it makes sense that he would want a rider with a backbone. Meanwhile, Silverwing was a _queen_ 💅👑 and liked Ulf because he showed deference to her.
Let's take Prince Aemond Targaryen for example. His brothers and nephews had Dragons because the egg laying Dragon had eggs for them when they were born. Aemond Targaryen did not. When he was born there were no eggs. He grew up without a Dragon before he claimed Vhagar. He had the potential of being killed but he wasn't. Princess Rhaena Targaryen as well does not have a Dragon because there were no Eggs for her, we hope to see her Claim the Dragon in the Vale.
It’s not just about feelings on Jace’s part. His concerns are entirely legitimate because what will stop those new riders from claiming the throne? Jace has a dragon but it is certainly not bigger than any of the ones being claimed. Rhaenyra has set up her own succession crisis by having the Strong’s and then having her own blond haired babes, along with this now. She has not the forethought and it does affect her in the Dance.
Flying Silverwing over King’s Landing and having Aemond see Vermithor on Dragonstone was such a cool move. Letting the Greens know that they have two big dragons now and aren’t afraid to use them.
@@tetamale4280 I was joking 😂 but still the conversation was much more interesting. I did not realize the dragonkeepers had so much agency/independence
In this episode, it is implied that Hugh is Saera Targaryen's bastard son. Saera is one of Jaehaerys' Daughter, aunt of Viserys and Daemon. In the books, Saera is kinda wild child, loving to have sex with random boys, and became pain in the ass for his Father for years ..
@@charleshoani8522 nah. Wait, is Vaegon still alive at this point? Because i'm pretty sure the last time we heard about him in the book is when he summoned in KL and some asked him to be the heir before the great council happened in 101 AC and he refused it. That was like almost 30 years before Dance
@rafaelblake7278 might be, I thought he and Saera were the only ones from the previous gen still alive during the dance. I'd assume he'd be around his 80s or 70s
What a good episode, finally, so many beautiful dragons, the design is incredible, today was really an episode that makes the last episode even scarier, especially because it didn't happen no major death, episode 8 will be bloody... I'm scared. Thanks for the reaction❤
Wait, what are you talking about? Lady Jeyne is great! She has the whole Vale to steer during a nuclear civil war, she sheltered and protected Rhaena and the children at considerable peril to herself and her people, she gave Rhaena all the information she needed and also provided her with motivation. And now she will observe what Rhaena does with all this. She is doing better than almost any other ruler at this point.
Hugh is the son of Saera Targaryen-a aunt of Viserys- who was caught with having relations with 3 close male companions. She proposed to her father Jaeharys I that she’d marry all three of them like Maegor did with his wives-which was exactly the wrong button to push with the king since Maegor murdered two of his brothers. After this and after she tried to steal a dragon he killed one of her lovers in a duel while forcing her to watch then tried to send her to become a silent sister (which was mentioned as likely being an empty threat). She escaped and fled to Essos and may still be alive. I’m sure if she heard she’d be laughing hysterically at one of her sons claiming her father’s dragon
In the books, Daemon was in Harrenhal like a bit over a year so I get it. But I also understand the frustration of people wanting Daemon to move forward and do more. He feels like a supporting cast member at times.
It was revealed earlier during the episode who Hugh's mother was (a targ princess who ran off to start a brothel). Him claiming vermithor might not be about him "sticking up" for himself but more to do with the fact that Vermithor is his grandfather's dragon.
So if dragons are basically a weapon of mass destruction, they just handed them over to people of untested loyalty and moral character. To be fair, most Targaryens are of questionable moral character and or metal state. So . . . This should be fun! Let's go!
From what I gathered from this is that Hugh’s mother was Saera Targaryen. One of King Jaehaerys’ many daughters. Long story short she was pretty wild and would invite lords into her bed. She was sent to Oldtown as punishment but she escaped to one of the free cities where she built herself up as a wh*re
When Rhaenyra said come out Vermithor he came and she confidently said (Doharas i.e. serve) I got goosebumps and everyone looked at her and thought WTF is that! As brilliant as the last scene where Aemond wants to attack Dragonstone and realizes oh oh Rhaenyra has a lot of fully grown dragons, we'd better focus on Vhagar😂
You can really tell what a force of nature Vhagar is. She was seemingly not intimidated at all potentially going 3 on 1 with one of them being Vermithor. Still, smart of Aemond not to take that. He knows that even he would probably lose that fight. Better to turn around and either strong-arm Heleana into mounting Dreamfyre, or wait for Daeron to bring the might of the Reach and his dragon to somewhat balance the odds. Oh, and he's probaly realllly regretting not flying to Dragonstone sooner right about now....
I think Vhagar is just desperate to fck shit up and die in a glorious battle taking as many with her as possible, so that people finally stop bothering her.
I wonder if Aemond will ever regret crippling Sunfyre and Aegon. I think he’s about to realise that he’s alone and Helaena will refuse to ride. Back when he removed Aegon from the game he thought he’d be able to handle the rest by himself, but Rhaenyra just completely tipped the playing field.
@@viktorstagnetti7491 Daeron and Tessarion are on the other side of the reach most likely about to get distracted by a civil war to defend the Hightowers. They literally discuss that right before Aemond sees Silverwing above King’s Landing. Whatever help Aemond is getting will not be here soon.
Vermithor looks so scary, even his name sounds scary. Whatever happens in the finale, I highly doubt there will be any happy winners at the end of this season.
43:15 They have 6+1 dragons if we count Daemon's Caraxes. There are Syrax (Rhaenyra) Vermax (Jacaerys) Moondancer (Baela) Seasmoke (Addam) Vermithor (Hugh) Silverwing (Ulf) And if Rhaena gets one, total number would be 8, and then 2 more in the long run with little Joffrey and Aegon's dragons.
The Blacks have: 1. Syrax 2. Caraxes 3. Vermax 4. Moondancer 5. Seasmoke 6. Vermithor 7. Silverwing 8. The wild dragon at The Vale (hopefully!) - Baby Dragons: 9. Tyraxes 10. Stormcloud And there are still two more wild dragons at Dragonstone
Meh, Aegon the Conqueror and Jaehaerys gained respect by threatening too. Poor writing on Daemon's arc and it's not like Riverlands value oaths like the North. Hoster Tully literaly burnt Riverlands camps in Robert's Rebellion. Too much for not commiting war crimes.
Did anyone noticed how Vermitor knock Hugh aside instead of burning him with the others? Also vermitor actually stretch his neck and sniff the crowd before he starts to roast them.
Nikki, EVERYONE wants a dragon until you have the cost of feeding it, housing it. Not to mention cleaning up after it "relieves itself" plus leash laws and fines, Etc.
I just realised, that Daemons arc is kinda Eddard Starks arc in reverse. Let me explain: Ned was raised in the North where everyone values oaths, the gods and birthright. He was a very honorable man, so when he came down to Kings Landing to serve as hand, he tried to handle everything by sticking to rules and laws and demanding everyone to be honorable, but realized too late, that nobody respected him cause that's just not how things are working in the kings court. He didn't know how to play the Game of Thrones so he lost. Now Daemon is the opposite. He lived most of his life among the kings court and played the Game in all it's dirty ways, tricking, buying and murdering his way to power. So when he got to Harrenhal he tried securing the riverlords loyalty the only way he knew, by telling the Blackwoods to wreak havoc and treating Oscar Tully like a scared boy who surely would be too afraid to oppose him. But he didn't know that the riverlords, much like the Northeners value honor and laws more than anything. Daemon only knows how to make people afraid of him but apparently, he has no idea how to gain their trust or respect, cause he never needed that. Much like Ned, Daemon played with the only rules he knew on the wrong board, and that's what bites him in the ass now.
Rhaenyra was pretty much Lord Farquaad from Shrek when she was speaking to all the lowborn trying to claim a dragon. "Some of you may die.. but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make." - Lord Farquaad
It's probably because she's not just a Targaryen but also because she's been around Vermithor before. She was born while Jahaerys was still alive. Some Targaryens take their children on their own dragons when they're still babies, so maybe Jahaerys once took his grand-granddaughter on a flight when she was a baby. She claimed Syrax when she was seven, so she was most likely often in the dragonpit and on Dragonstone, so Vermithor is already familiar with her and is therefore more easily calmed by her.
Nah. She’s not the chosen one or special. She’s just Targaryen, which I guess is kinda special. I think a lot of people forgot that Daemon in season 1 did literally the exact same thing with Vermithor when he was signing to him. And like another commenter said, Baelon (Viserys dad, Rhaenyras grandfather) literally punched Balerions nose as a kid and claimed him.
Ulf and Hugh are a contrast to each other; one has a family to feed and fight for, the other one is a drunk, lazy unambitious man, though both are Targaryen bastards.
Black dragons Syrax = Rhaenyra Caraxes = Daemon Vermax = Jacaerys Moondancer = Baela Seasmoke = Addam Vermithor = Hugh Silverwing = Ulf Rhaena MAY be able to find and claim the wild dragon in the Vale (yes I know that dragon’s name but I’m not saying cause, spoilers) but we’ll have to wait and see Green dragons Vhagar = Aemond Tessarion = Daeron (not sure if we’re going to actually see Tessarion/Daeron this season, though the preview for the finale does suggest that) No idea if Sunfyre is alive. Cole made it seem like he wasn’t, but we also haven’t heard anything about Sunfyre for a bit. And if he is alive, it’s unclear if he’ll be able to fly again
Actually , on Aemond’s side they’ve got Vhaegar and whatever Daron’s dragon’s name will be. I don’t think Aegon and his dragon are battle ready yet, so that’s two for the greens. However, on Rhaenyra’s side we’ve added three dragons with Adam’s and the two claimed at the end of the episode. Plus there’s Rhaenyra’s dragon, Jace’s dragon and Baela’s. That brings them up to six for sure. If Damon is ready to rejoin Rhaenyra and support her after this season of introspection and transformation, that boosts the blacks up to seven. And if Rhaena actually manages to tame the wild one in the vale, which seems to be where things might be going, Rhaenyra’s side will have eight dragons to the green’s two. After a season of seemingly constant setbacks and defeats, we’re witnessing the rise of the Rhaenyra and the Blacks! Choosing to put the word “flee” into Aemond’s mouth followed by the closing image of Rhaenyra with the three newly added dragons on Dragonstone was a brilliant way of underscoring the shift in fortunes for and rebalancing of assets of thd two sides. Fantastic episode!
Sunfyre is still alive. And Aegon is recovering quite quickly. It won't be long until sunfyre is back in the fight. If Haleana joins the fight, thats another dragon. And Daeron now has a dragon as well. So the we could see a situation where the greens have 4 dragons and the blacks have 8.
Jaehaerys the Couciliator & his wife Alysanne were Vermithor & Silverwings riders, respectfully. Ulf didn't step on the eggs, they're too strong. He just stepped into the clutch of the eggs, kinda like a membrane.
To be fair I heard in the book that Daemon was at Herranhal for a year as for the shit happening at Dragonstone that was like American Idol and Vermithor was like Simon Cowell lol
Aemond set off on Vahgar full of confidence thinking the fight is already won, but pooped his pants when he saw Vermothor and fled the scene faster than a ferret up a drain pipe 😂
Ngl, that moment during the last part was a perfect chance to kill Vhagar, no? Aemond is alone, no army, no scorpions to help him, and close enough to Dragonstone for the other dragons to chase and attack. I'm sure Vermithor and Silverwing, who has been chilling for literally decades, would be so well rested and down and ready to fight. Plus Syrax, Seasmoke,Vermax and Moondancer are there to back them up. Wasted chance in my opinion, but I get it.
Definitely! It was also Aemond's best shot imo, the riders are inexperience and Vhagar was eager to fight, it would be suicide but I would bet they could take out atleast two of Rhaenyra's dragons before dying
Their riders weren't experienced enough. They'd literally just learned how to hold on when they fly, never mind battle maneuvers. Vhagar might have been alone, but you could see how eager she was to take all three of them on at once, even when Vhagar was one of them.
Silverwing waking up like "what is one of Vermithors snack doing stepping in my eggs? And immediately going I smell Targaryen you woke me you are taking me out for a ride." Had me dying

Those bastards look more Targaryen like than Jace and who is to say that the realm won't change their loyalty because of that.

To give a brief bit of history without any spoilers, Jaehaerys Targaryen and Alysanne Targaryen were siblings and were king/queen for a long ass time. They also had way too many kids which was likely to end in some sort of sibling war. Some of their kids that have relevance in HotD are as follows:
Aemon Targaryen married Jocelyn Barathion and she birthed Rhaenys - The Queen Who Never Was.
I was so surprised they included Saera
Good summary though - only footnote that Aemon died when Rhaenys was pregnant with Laenor, not Jocelyn with Rhaenys.
@@squatlebherz4434 Yes sorry, you're right. I remember it being sad that Aemon couldn't be there for a birth but misremembered it as Rhaenys herself being born. I think it was Laena though, not Laenor. According to the wiki.

True. Rhaena in the books has several eggs she prays to have hatch, while they seem to be giving her Nettles role(which I'm angry about.)

And now she will observe what Rhaena does with all this.
She is doing better than almost any other ruler at this point.
Actually, there’s 3 new riders Addam, Hugh, and Ulf

Don't forget about paying for dragon liability and comprehensive insurance, registration, plates
Silverwing is BEAUTIFUL 🥰 was so excited for Nikki’s reaction to all these new/returning dragons!!
I just realised, that Daemons arc is kinda Eddard Starks arc in reverse. Let me explain:
Ned was raised in the North where everyone values oaths, the gods and birthright.

Rhaenyra being able to calm Vermithor without claiming him proves she is more special, she was the chosen one and the animals know it lol

I think Daeron's dragon was named Tessarion and also Heleana has Dreamfyre so greens would have 3. Small-big-biggest.
Rider requirement for these dragons
Seasmoke: Humble and "I chose you"
Vermithor: Stand your ground
Silverwing: Cute human mine now
Silverwing first human in years and she's like "He'll do..." lol
The riders are not experienced, they cnt just rush Vhagar and risk losing one or 2 dragons.
That Vermithor scene gave me GOOSEBUMPS
Silverwing waking up like "what is one of Vermithors snack doing stepping in my eggs? And immediately going I smell Targaryen you woke me you are taking me out for a ride." Had me dying
I just said "The Battle of the Bastards" and then you said it! The force is strong with us! LOL!
Dragons are like overgrown fire-breathing cats. If you know, you know.
yeah, basically
