- The Bentley Continental GT has been updated. For this update, Bentley have axed the venerable W12 and replaced it with a V8 hybrid with 771hp. Alex Legouix gets up close and personal.

The upgrades are welcome… except for the headlights. Thats not an upgrade.
Now only if all the automakers can concentrate on bringing the weight down on vehicles, improving the materials then increasing the output of motors
At this point, that's up to materials tech more than it is auto manufacturers.

Anyone else getting Chrysler vibes from the headlights?
I can understand going from a V12 engine to a V8 Hybrid , but i can't understand the reasoning behind the headlight design .... It was a distinct Feature , i always new in my rear view mirror that I'm gonna be overtaken by a Bentley.... It was a feeling

Excellent review! RIP W12, but at least this powertrain isn't anemic, albeit more complicated in the name of fuel efficiency. Wonder how it will perform in IRL testing & long term.
Those headlights remind me a little bit of the Baytur but I do miss the round quad headlights. My pops had a early MK1 Speed & those headlights made it stand out.
I really like the shape of the lights also the attention to detail, true craftsmanship

@@danielbrown4579 I think that doing drag races with their quality standards will add more spice to the channel. CARWOW drag races are full of such time wasters and windy audio. Plus when they drag race I notice they don’t even bother with accurate results: I.e. I’ve noticed some cars with have full tanks of gas compared to other with less than a quarter

this is a commercial and the elephant in the room is ( and smartly not mentioned) the WEIGHT!!!.....near 3000 kg I presume. Still a great car but loose the battery.....

If it's driven to its maximum range of 50 miles in EV mode - which most buyers are likely to do - then of course it'll need plugging in.

sounds like the BMW power plant which, with its added weight, made it slower.
Don't like that front Radar/Sensor on the front grill, is so off center, why not in the center?, It looks like a mold. C'mon Bentley do better. And maybe on the lower grill as well in the center.🤔

Comparing the fuel efficiency of a Bentley V8 plug-in hybrid to a Renault Clio is pretty off. The Bentley needs regular charging and careful driving to hit those efficiency numbers, and let's be honest , most people who buy Bentleys aren't thinking about that. A Renault Clio is built to be efficient without needing owners to go out of their way. So saying a Bentley is as efficient as a Clio really depends on how the owner uses it, dragging an empty battery across Europe will not be anything near a Renault Clio.
all right finally this GT got complete BMW treatment from all new 5 series.
BMW owns Rolls-Royce.
Volkswagen Group owns Bentley.

@@Neojhun all hybrids depreciate faster, I am not a hybrid hater, I love the versatility, but in this case it is a Bentley, who cares about 200 more horsepower, it is supposed to be like a mechanical watch, with all its down sides.
If we learn anything from before, these cars are already not reliable, not expecting anything better with more complexity.
Also, this same 4.0 v8 is used in a lot of cars, nothing feels like a choice for the consumer anymore
this fuel economy stuff is so stupid you KNOW that its not nearly as fuel efficient as advertised

@@zaids4431To be fair, Rory used to be a TopGear presenter so we hold him high in that regard. That being said, I can enjoy the presentation without focusing too much on the shortcomings. Give them a little space. Can't expect people to be established straight away. Even people like Reid took time to polish his skills. It's not like AutoTrader is out of content. New presenters count on our support to help them keep improving.

WTF that is not a popular power train. V8 plus PHEV seems like unnecessary overkill. 6 Cylinder would make more sense for non prestige brands lower than Bentley. Heck Ferrari 296GTB is a 120deg V6 and it's a Glorious freak show. Cars are the most interesting NOW.

Not a single time the weight if this fat walrus of a car was disclosed. By the way, the bes older Continental GT was the V8, which was lighter and more Athletic than the W12.
This weighs about the same as the new BMW M5.
WTF the old GT Speed V8 still weighed 2.2 Tonnes. Not exactly light, heavy lump is what a modern Bentley always was.

Another useless plug in “scam” hybrid system ruins good car only makes car heavier and makes you pay for something you don’t need and don’t want. What’s even worst will end up driving this cars without charged battery only using V8 engine but you will have to carry this stupid plug isn system with you everywhere you go.

@@phuketexplorer unfortunately i do because i was stupid enough to waste my money on plug in systems like this. You pay for plug in system and it’s useless. It makes car heavier and you wish you had only V8 instead because they tell you it wil charge it self but it never does so you end up driving petrol engine anyway. I am sure you have no idea how does it work using plug in hybrid car because you never even use one stop ST€U.
