  • Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux Hill Climb @ Flats Track Walhalla - 24/12/17
    In this video we take on the Rock Step section at the top of Flats Track near OToole's Campground.
    The Ford Ranger is running 33" Muddies and factory rear Diff.
    The Toyota Hilux is running 32" ATs and Front & Rear Lockers
    Being the first to attempt i decide to approach it slowly and crawl up resulting in more wheel spin, while the Hilux driver (Ben) with the advantage of Twin Lockers decides to hit it with a bit more momentum.

      Lockers make all the difference with IFS vehicles. The Hilux was open diffs factory and struggled until the owner installed the dual lockers. It’s the same hilux in my very first video that needed to winch. Now it’s pretty capable and I have to keep up with him 😂

      @@michaeltoomer4090 I have a Ranger with a similar set up to yours. I run 600kg OME suspension and find I don't get much flex although I haven't used it yet with anything like that load yet, what set up have you got? I'm against adding a front locker as I think its one of those mods that is expensive to add and creates reliability problems which are definitely expensive. I've heard enough driveshafts go "ping" and if they go in the wrong geographical location and you've no support you can be properly buggered.

    • @michaeltoomer4090

      Gordon Bowen I have nothing out of the ordinary. Just Ironman foam cell pro 2" lift with 0-300kg springs and extended shackles which have been added since this video. The extended shackles help with flex. I imagine your heavy duty springs would flex less than if they were a softer setup. Since this video iv also changed my wheels/tyres and aftermarket UCAs and a diff drop for reliability.

    Exactly based on the ranger platform , there's a Passenger SUV in india called the Ford Endeavour , its Everest in Australia
    My question is , how good is the Fords traction control system?

    Stupid comments. The suspension systems in these two trucks is the same (IFS front, solid axle with leaf rear), neither of them have much flex. Both with a rear only locker they would be about the same if they both were twin locked they would be about the same. But they are both great trucks and both very capable offroad as long as they have at least one locker and a good driver who runs appropriate tyre pressures.

      @michaeltoomer4090  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      jbrizz99 thanks for watching and comments. I agree with your comment 100%. Both vehicles are pretty even at the end of the day.
      The Hilux being older doesn’t have traction control so he uses his lockers a lot more.
      If you read my other reply’s to the other comments you will see me explain further but in a nutshell the Ranger tried the crawl approach and the Hilux did more of the crash and bash. Hope you enjoyed

    • @jbrizz99
      @jbrizz99 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Louis Nel I have a patrol as well but I don't drive it hard enough to find it's limits, although it is nice to know it's a very tough vehicle. With diff lock there is usually no need to thrash it, second low at idle will get it almost anywhere.

    • @louisnel894
      @louisnel894 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not mean punishment like high revving and so on, i mean work. Construction work and all that stuff where the bin is always loaded driving on tough terrains all that stuff. My dad has the old 1990ish hilux and that thing is still working today, where you can see these new rangers allready some people broke theirs and so on. Dad does earth moving mech like CAT, BELL and so on, so that hilux has seen it all, from open cast coal mines to mountains and game farms so on. No problems yet. Hilux = beast :) Ofc you get the people that say if you look after your car then it will last longer, yes i get that point but have you guys seen top gear where they try to break the hilux? no ranger will survive that, not even the old ones.

    Can you please tell me how do you handle the clutch in such inclines with sudden stoppages. Is the clutch always at biting point ? If not, then at which places should it be at biting point vs not.since in such inclines it can easily stall while losing moment at 1-5 kmper hour.

    • @Sh1tstir
      @Sh1tstir 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just pop it and run...... also seriousness once you start rolling on a steep hill dont touch the clutch it's all about drive and forward momentum, you don't have to pin it just walk up and use the right foot to modulate speed vs traction. Once you loose both then and only then use clutch but the right gear selection is pivotal at the start you don't want to be hunting gears in a manual going up hill. To quick to many rpm you break shit to slow you stall out. Find ballance.
      Biggest mistake made is wrong gear selection In first place. Best way to figure out your car is find a steep hill not over the top start out L1 and try it in diffrent gears its not how fast you get to the top but keeping your vehicle in the sweet spot on boost and torque mine is around that 1800 to 2000 rpm each vehicle is different though but biggest thing is know your cars capabilities first.

Il probably change them in the future but until then I’m happy with arms as there a lot stronger than factory and no one wants an upper ball joint failure.

      I’ve gotten up a greasy Palm Ck in Cape York with no lockers, didn’t need to use the winch, just pure momentum, then parked at the top for half an hour watching others get stuck, needing winching & towing out one after the other. Only one got up without help and it was an old red 90’s Hilux. A guy from my work who was with me owned a Jeep and he broke his uni joint on it while lightly feathering the accelerator with some wheel slip. That Jeep had so many mechanical issues while on the Tele track. Word got around about the Jeep and I had people we met along the way tell me stories about it even though I first hand saw all the problems it had. Lesson = Don’t ever buy a heap of Jeep.

  • @thomashrb
    @thomashrb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nicely done. Not sure if it's the same with the 2015 facelift T6, but with the 2011-2015 ranger, when you engage the rear diff-lock, it disables traction control on the front wheels; so locking the rear diff wasn't always the benefit that it seemed. Still the Ranger is a fantastic vehicle. Hoping more manufactures follow the route Nissan took with the NP300 in keeping traction control on for the front wheels when you engage rear diff-lock.

    • @michaeltoomer4090
      @michaeltoomer4090  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Rodgers in the Mk2 Ranger front traction control remains enabled with rear diff lock on. It’s hard to tell from this video though. Reason is because the traction control system in the ranger allows a lot of wheel spin before kicking in and applying some braking to the spinning wheel sending some torque to the other wheel. Works well enough in most terrain but struggles when rock crawling etc.
      Thanks for watching

      w3b3d1g1 tyre pressure is pretty similar in both vehicles.
      Main difference was momentum. The Ranger was first and crawled up to make sure the front bar would clear the first Rock step then tried to climb from a standing position.
      The Hilux hit the obstacle at speed and used a lot of momentum to carry it through. An imbetween pace would be ideal for this but when in doubt start slow as it’s not worth damaging the car. Thanks for watching and leaving feedback

I'll take that Ranger though mine has never let me down and that traction control system is just amazing though I'm looking at installing a front auto locker just to help in the really tough stuff as I have to follow people driving Jeep Wranglers and they don't play around 😂😂😂

      Scott Monahan I had it installed but I can't imagine it being to hard. The new ones come with the parking sensors already cut out I believe . Didn't use to be the case. You will need a new a new trailer plug harness though as the ford plug won't fit in the bar.

    I think this proved that the Ranger did pretty good with just a rear locker. How would the hilux go with just the rear locker? Also the tyre pressures on the ranger were a lot higher, you could see that straight away.... come on fair comparison boys..... LOL 👍

    • @michaeltoomer4090
      @michaeltoomer4090  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      All fair calls. The video isn’t really a comparison even though I have titled the video as such. Was just 2 blokes having a crack at a obstacle at the time . The main reason the hilux flew up was because he deployed the crash and bash method while myself being the first tried the “crawl up and make sure my front bar doesn’t hit” method.
      In regards to the tyre pressure I normally run them at 20-22 psi but I have since changed my wheels/tyres which I can run a lot lower without fear of popping the bead.

    That whole demonstration really just shows that if you let your tyres down you have more traction.
    Hilux still would have breezed up there with no lockers.
    That is flats track near O’tools I believe.

    • @michaeltoomer4090
      @michaeltoomer4090  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s The rocky section at the top of Flats Track. The main reason the Hilux breezed up because he hit it at speed. Something which I wasn’t prepared to do being first and just scraping my front bar over the first Rock step. In regards to the tyres I normally run them at 20-22psi but I have constant issues with popping the bead. Iv since changed to a different wheel/tyre combo which I can run much lower.
      Thanks for watching and leaving feedback

  • @caseym3118
    @caseym3118 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ford should implement the abs to lock ( applying the brake )the wheel when it’s the air or loss of traction . That does work maybe not quite as good as a front locker but it would be all round better and could be as easy to implement with just a reprogram ! All the parts needed are all ready there and Jeeps trail hawks use the same idea

    • @michaeltoomer4090
      @michaeltoomer4090  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Casey M your talking about traction control and this model Ranger does use traction control at the front even while rear diff lock is engaged.
      Your actually watching it in action but as noted and mentioned in other 4x4 reviews the Ranger allows a lot of wheel spin before kicking in and is very reactionary. Also when it does kick in only some braking is applied to the spinning wheel therefore transmitting only some torque to the other wheel.
      It works reasonably well enough on most surfaces but really struggles on steep climbs such as this.
      Thanks for watching and leaving feedback

    • @caseym3118
      @caseym3118 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Toomer ah ok I did not realize it had front traction control . Does not look like it works to well in this vid. Nice looking truck though 😬

    • @michaeltoomer4090
      @michaeltoomer4090  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Casey M yeah this video doesn’t show it to well but believe me it works.
      Traction control is enough for 99% of my driving and only use the rear locker when I need to.
      Cheers

    • @dasbsas1
      @dasbsas1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot.
      Sometimes, I dont know if its better to use low pressuere in order to get more grip (15-20psi bigger foot print) or hard (35psi) to avoid
      breaking a tire, while riding on sharp rock.

    • @michaeltoomer4090
      @michaeltoomer4090  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dante Kawa ZX I had that issue alot with these wheels and tyres.
      Iv since learned that you want to run the narrowest wheels your tyres will allow to minimise breaking the bead. The wheels in his vid are 9" which is the widest my 285/70r17 will fit on. I had constant bead issues hence why I didn't like running below 20psi.
      Iv since changed my wheels to a 16x8 with 305/70r16 tyres. I can run them down to 16 and had no problems.

  • @vevohoeyo
    @vevohoeyo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Whilst front lockers are awesome there were many factors here. The hilux was way more aired down which makes an incredible difference. Plus the hilux driver hit the slope rolling and knew how to feather the throttle on off without stopping.

    • @michaeltoomer4090
      @michaeltoomer4090  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      vevohoeyo while the outcome appeared that way the reason was a little different. Being first and not wanting to bash my front bar into the rock I decided to approach it slowly to ensure my front bar clears the first rock step and crawl up but struggled for traction.
      The hilux driver while appearing to be in control was actually a nervous wreck 😂 and needed a lot of encouragement to give it a go. Knowing Ben, (Hilux driver) he hits everything at speed, he just wanted to get up and over it. An imbetween pace would have been a lot better for both vehicles.

    • @vevohoeyo
      @vevohoeyo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Toomer get the auto ranger m8 they are awesome for throttle control in the low range

    • @michaeltoomer4090
      @michaeltoomer4090  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      vevohoeyo it is a Auto Mate. What you are seeing here is the Ford Rangers front Traction control in action. Hard to tell because it doesn’t work to well on a steep include and there is a lot of wheel spin before it kicks in.
