There was a lot of division, but I don't think many 60's protestors were calling for the complete end of democracy and the instatement of an authoritarian Christian government. Yes you had some of the extreme radical left calling for revolution, Maoism, etc., but they were a marginal number of the broad coalition protesting (i) for civil rights and (ii) against the war in Vietnam. MAGA is huge in numbers, and fundamentally against American democracy. Frankly, it's very worrying. But every society has its downfall; France went authoritarian several times after their revolution, in the big picture of history America may just be an experiment in human governance. The blatantly political Supreme Court, and the blatantly political executive, and the division of Congress into a polarized party bloc and the electoral college into an unrepresentative body - none of the checks and balances are functioning.

I was there, in the '60s. Yes, there was great conflict about the Vietnam war and civil rights. But we have never faced as massive an internal movement, blatantly fascist - and with the Supreme Court as an ally - as D.T.'s MAGA, and the stated ideals of "Project 25." We had American Nazis in the '30s, of course, but it wasn't as pervasive.

Slow but sure polarization began with the loss of the Fairness Doctrine as FCC policy. Beginning in 1987, there were no longer requirements to air counterpoints to one-way speech in radio and TV venues. Rush Limbaugh became the template. He could dump callers while talking, overriding anything they said. By never admitting error, and by having the last word, it left the impression that his views were unassailable. This quashing and silencing of opposing views continues in talk radio and TV today.

I would need to research your claims, but if true, I agree with your comment, except to give a caution against your comment's implied conclusion: bringing the Fairness Doctrine back or something similar. I can easily see problems with defining "counterpoint", AND with loopholes around the "fairness" goal, esp. since "fair" is apparently _very_ debatable.
True or false, I agree with you that opposing views shouldn't be quashed. The problem is opposing views _about opposing views_ and definitions! Will we ever agree on the line between reasonable disagreement and language that is hateful, slanderous/libelous, dangerously inciteful, etc.? --J

Political polarization is the natural result of democracies' use of primitive voting methods to elect public offices. Primitive voting methods count only one majority (or plurality) and ignore most voters' preferences. Here's an example to illustrate: Suppose there are 3 candidates, named Left, Center and Right. Suppose the voters have the following orders of preference:
    35%: Left Center Right
    13%: Center Left Right
    12%: Center Right Left
    40%: Right Center Left
Although the percentages may vary, the orders of preference are plausible: voters who favor Left also prefer Center over Right, and voters who favor Right also prefer Center over Left. If Center doesn't compete, voters who favor Center are called swing voters... some of them prefer Left over Right and the others prefer Right over Left.
Primitive voting methods count 25% for Center (13%+12%), and because 25% is smaller than Left's 35% and Right's 40%, this creates the impression that Center is less popular than Right or Left. This deters Center from competing, and the choice between Left & Right creates the appearance of polarization. The result in the example is that Right picks up about half (12%) of the voters who favor Center, and in the example Right defeats Left with a narrow 52% majority (40%+12%).
But if all of the voters' preferences are counted, Center is discovered to be the most popular candidate. A 65% landslide majority (13%+12%+40%) prefer Center over Left, and a 60% landslide majority (13%+12%+35%) prefer Center over Right. There are in fact three head-to-head majorities: 65%, 60%, and 52%. The order of finish should be constructed by processing the head-to-head majorities one at a time, from largest to smallest: First Center should be placed ahead of Left in the order of finish, because 65% rank Center over Left. Next Center should be placed ahead of Right, because 60% rank Center over Right. Next Right should be placed ahead of Left because 52% rank Right over Left. The completed order of finish is "Center Right Left" and Center is elected.
The example shows that the candidate in second place (Left, with 35%) can be a spoiler who prevents the election of the candidate in third place (Center, with 25%). By competing, Left causes the election of his/her supporters' "greater evil" Right. It's a myth that candidates of the two "largest" parties can't be spoilers.
When only one majority (or plurality) is counted, that majority (or plurality) can often be a coalition of minorities on different issues. For example, a minority who want to ban abortion, plus a minority who want to deport immigrants of color, plus a minority who oppose gun regulations, plus a minority who want to cut capital gains taxes, plus a minority who oppose environmental protection regulations, etc. This undermines majority rule and weakens politicians' incentive to support majority-preferred policies, prevents government policies from being stable, and empowers extremists because the rest of their coalition depend on their supporters' votes. But if all of the head-to-head majorities are counted, all of the coalitions are counted, and this would create a strong incentive for politicians to support majority-preferred policies. That incentive would quickly eliminate political polarization.

What you're saying should _not_ be ignored. Neither should another possibility: that many of these competing, divided forces, too often in such a dishonest and negative fight, _honestly_ believe their side is correct/right and the other is incorrect/wrong, and are actually _not_ trying to profit in a way that they _believe_ to be immoral. That's the biggest problem; getting people to *_agree on right and wrong._* --J

My focus is on how marketing/propaganda is used to create that condition in which those that are in the divide have been programmed to believe they are right and that the other-side is wrong. The notion that there are those who work to divide people in this way specifically so that they can be more easily controlled. It's a historic fact that racism has been used in such a way to divide and weaken unions.

The polarisation is mostly a mirage, people still love their neighbours and want the same things.
I love Colbert, but have become so bored with his takes for the last few years. In fact, I used to agree with him but his obsession has turned me away. His obvious mischaracterizations have made me seek out full clips and I've seen how dishonest he is. He's exactly the same as those he criticises.

Are you comparing a comedian and satirist making fun of the nightmare world around us to the people who are supposed to be informing you of the news? Do you see how the whole premise breaks if you're stuck relying on comedians to have a more accurate picture of the world than the news?
It'd be like commenting on video of a clown performance and asking why he wasn't doing more for hard hitting journalism, while giving a pass to the news for reporting opinions of the owners of their network exclusively.

Ok I'm going to sleep because it's about dawn in our province's capital, but last thing just occurred to me; so one of those times I NEVER signed an NDA was when they were doing reshoots and neither Mark Sinclair or Dwayne formerly the rock johnson wouldn't come out of their trailers if the other guy was out of his. That's literally the kind of b.s. I had to turn a blind eye to because Dwayne Johnson may be a (roided up) physical presence (way more than Vin Diesel's characters wish they could be), but I could still easily kick in that door and bitch slap him around; it's his name and lawyers that made that more or less impossible... Wunderbarr! Comment 22 my kid's favourite number. Ok so I'm done watching America cosplay for reals with the Handmade's Tail, and while getting my US citizenship was sooooooooo easy, you just have to be crazy Patriotic in only the way the Romans were, and technically could be a surprise candidate in November, running as an Independent, and trust me the numbers weren't difficult with who is currently running. However, what was difficult was justifying running for /"Leader of the Free World"/ (indeed) when I can just sneak win to be the next Minister of Prime of Kanada (crazy easier to rig (legally) than even the jerry rigging crap with voter lines Republicans do) and regardless of who sits behind the Revolute Desk come November, we'll either have a trade partner because a lot of our exports cum from other countries, or we'll build a wall... Also, we can actually do that, check out a map.

If you had included what I said after, yes, absolutely. Hollywood, news media, what you see around you shapes your opinion. You shouldn't let it happen, and should always question everything, but it's inevitable, and Hollywood has done this since the start, and been part of the problem and solution, depending on the situation.
