    About the music, the hyrule field theme in this game is by far my favorite version of it! It really pumps you up and makes you excited to go adventuring. I used to just go on loops around Hyrule because it was so fun to run around on Epona, mowing down enemies and just to listen to the music with it, it just felt so epic! And the Zelda Reorchestrated version is amazing!

    Few things I want to say:
    First - Midna IS the Twilight Princess, so it IS named after her in a manner of speaking. I believe Zelda says as much. Zelda herself has more of a cameo role. ;-)
    Second: I (mostly) play games for the story, game play has always been secondary for me which might sound a bit backwards but hey, that is how I roll. I feel like most of the people that "complain" about the slow start are the people that puts gameplay/game mechanics first and don't really care about intros or establishing characters.
    I am NOT saying that game mechanics and game play is not important, it very much is and even if the story is good while the game play is atrocious it would be no fun at all. But that is second to the story for me, if you get me. Another point (I think) of the slow start of Twilight Princess is that you get te meet and get a sense of Link and how he fits in to the village and establishes the people of Ordon and how happy and peaceful their existence is. Their worst problem is when a goat breaks out from the farm and have to be chased down.
    Also, the game mechanics of the game is the best bar none in the 3D Zelda franchise, up to and including Breath of the Wild.
    Third - I always felt Ocarina Link aka Hero of Time got with Malon. I wanna ship them anyway. Dunno about proof though... Apparently he also died unsatisfied since he never got recognized as a hero because he and child Zelda foils Ganondorf at the very beginning. So he teaches Twilight Link his sword skills to sort of make up for that. Yes, that is him, or his shade. Officialy confirmed by Nintendo i believe.
    Fourth -Did I mention this is stil my favorite Zelda game so far, BotW just gets second place for me. :-D

    1:17:50 - I've always gone back and forth between whether it's the Triforce of Wisdom, the "Light Force" (from that one game) or both (though I've been leaning toward the LF since I've really understood it, or both on my end). Your concept of the Triforce breaking the rules is actually super-legit and *really* fascinating. Similarly, bringing up the Skull Kid and elements about it is... fascinating!

  • @Frieza2000XTC
    @Frieza2000XTC 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This is the only explanation of how Ganondorf got the Triforce in TP I've ever heard that sits well with me. Bravo. A friend pointed out that poisoning the Deku Tree might be seen as worthy of execution, but even so they would still have had to actually arrest him. Even with just his natural power he could easily have broken free and returned home, so maybe that's how the war gets started.

  • @Tacticslion
    @Tacticslion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    1:57:42 - something that struck me when you were asking about why the Triforce of Power might have abandoned Ganondorf is something that you said, earlier: Zant.
    You posited that Zant lacked pretty much... everything. He lacked intellect, cunning, skill; but you said something that stood out to me at the time, back at 1:50:21 - "he is probably the furthest extent of power in the absence of anything else I've ever seen in all of fiction." That struck me, at the time, because it made me think, "So, he's kind of a better Ganondorf than Ganondorf, really - he's more in tune with the pure essence of the Triforce than even G-Cash, who explicitly had to slink around and use cunning (wisdom) and daring (courage)." (not actual quote, but the best I could do to make my scattered thoughts hopefully-coherent to others.)
    And that makes me wonder. What if that's true?
    What if the Triforce of power abandoned Ganondorf because it found a wielder *even more in tune* with its fundamental nature - even more out of balance than Ganondorf himself? Zant is, for all intents and purposes, the wielder of the Triforce during the events of the game. Heck, Ganondorf even told the man that he would make whatever Zant wanted what Ganondorf wanted, that the Triforce (and Ganondorf) would be "housed" inside of Zant; and I posit that it created a connection, of sorts, between the Triforce and Ganondorf. And what would an angry, petulant, spoiled child who was defeated feel when he saw someone else succeeding where he had failed? Furious? Jealous? Spiteful? I'd say so. And if the Triforce was still responding to the will of Zant (who continued to persist on some level, much like Ganon or Ganondorf does in most timelines), that seems to be kind of perfect for explaining what happened. "Na-ah-ah: I lost, so you can't win without me! It's not fair! You promised!" A whiny, spoiled, power-centric reaction entirely focused on his own selfish will instead of anything reasonable.
    (Love your characterization of Zant, by the way. Also, I can never remember if it's Zant or Xant, but I think it's the former, so I'm running with it. Blarg, dyslexia.)

    • @littlezork
      @littlezork 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad that someone else sees it this way, tbh. It's like alot of people tend to overlook what Ganondorf and Zant both said: they have a connection.
      It probably went deeper than Ganondorf had expected or whatever. Or maybe he didn't expect Zant to so readily betray him right back. Lol

    It's probably Malon. The farm, the sort of flirting they do in OOT, and the fact that she's the only person he'd actually met in the outside world (other than a few NPCs) other than Zelda and Impa in the child timeline. He'd never met Ruto, and why would he? In that timeline, he was just some kid.

    I've seen a theory as to why Zant appears. Ganondorf gave part of his power to Zant and that's how he rose to power. It's possible that Zant, after his death, was watching Ganondorf from the afterlife, cheering him on and awaiting his resurrection, only to see Ganondorf completely disregard his people, including him.
    Then, Ganon can no longer call upon the Triforce, so then calls out to Zant to give him back the power given to him so that he can survive. Seeing his god completely disregard him, get beaten by a farm boy with a sword, and then call out to him for help probably shattered whatever faith he had in Ganondorf and at that moment, he does possibly the only good thing he ever did and denies Ganondorf his request.
    In essence, Ganondorf's biggest mistake in Twilight Princess was sharing his power with Zant.

    A couple of thoughts:
    The obvious reason to keep Zelda contained in Hyrule Castle is to keep the Triforce of Wisdom handy for when the Triforce of Courage shows up - much like Ganondorf in Ocarina letting the Triforce of Courage run around in order to flush the Triforce of Wisdom out (and letting Link collect the Spiritual Stones for him earlier).
    When the Master Sword didn't hurt Midna, I took that as more of a "Twili aren't evil" than anything else - the "Blade of Evil's Bane", the sword that will not abide the touch of evil, the sword that can hurt even a Triforce wielder (as Ganon can attest), so Midna, heir of the Interlopers, expects to be condemned by the blade as an ancient enemy of the Goddesses' Chosen People, only to, "wait, it's not striking me down..."

    29 Minutes in the question about the Bokoblin capturing the kids comes up, my thoughts have always been like this:
    I'm pretty sure the bokoblins were there looking for the triforce. In the cutscene you can see them looking at someone's hand.
    Link is left literally because they don't see him.
    You have the pov shot of the lead bokoblin looking around and seeing all the kids are gone because Link is too near him to be in sight on his steed. (And Bokoblins aren't especially clever to begin with)
    And we see later that Link is put in jail when he shows he has the triforce, so they were looking to capture whoever had it.
    Now why the Bokoblins hold onto the kids after seeing they don't have it, idk. Maybe they weren't going to considering the kids manage to escape?

    On Ganondorf's death- I think he gave too much power to Zant. Too much of the triforce of power went to this pathetic weakling who shouldnt have it. This made a... toxic connection between Zant and Ganondorf that caused the triforce not just to abandon him, but connect Zant to his death. Its almost a harry potter final horcrux situation.

    I always assumed that Ganondorf lost the Power shard because he was physically overpowered by Link, and thus was proven unworthy and not the being who had the level of power to earn the triforce. As for Zant... I figured it was sort of the Triforce using something as a shape to explain to Ganondorf why he lost. He’d tainted the power by giving it to Zant, which isn’t what power does, and so when he was deemed unworthy it used Zant as a shape and taunted him by showing him his fate a heartbeat before he died.

  • @ler74
    @ler74 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My personal theory for what happened to ganondorf was that both thematically and practically, link proved himself in that protracted fight that he personally is more worthy of the triforce of power than ganondorf, or at least that if he can defeat him on every front like this, ganondorf was not worthy. He proved he is the the better beast fighter, the better archer, the better horse rider, the better swordsman, the better sorcerer (sort of, magic was planned until late stages of the game and this is clearly visible in pre-release builds, so instead it's, of course, through magic tennis) , again and again. Even with the advent of the triforce of power link proved himself superior. I believe Link swayed the triforce of power's decision to chose ganondorf, so it left him in the hour it could have saved him. Remember the triforce of power is not what makes ganondorf special it's that he's the reincarnation of demise.

    The one good theory about ganon's death I've heard is that Zant still had that fraction of power and that when Ganon called upon it Zant realized he was following a false prophet who could not succeed and did not care about him so denied him the remaning power required to save himself from death

    I was half paying attention when you said your theory twist and my eyes just sort of jolted. I had to rewind to get the whole "oh shiiiiit" factor of that moment. And yes I would love a game like that though given what happens in TP, Ganondorf couldn't have much of a character arc. He shouldn't turn good or anything, I just feel like after helping Link he might become a slightly better, more well rounded person.

    This is great. I never thought about Hyrule as a ruined kingdom in decline and mostly just chalked the lack of people up to technical limitations (which still probably play a large role). Twilight Princess was one of the first video games I ever played, so I had no reference to how Hyrule could otherwise function. It's really neat to think that most of the dungeons are abandoned deposits of magitech, like if the Eberron setting of DnD was fast forwarded a hundred years with a rekindling of the Last War. You've brought to my attention a steampunk flavor of the game that I did not notice before which illuminates a bit more of why I love the dungeon design and atmosphere of the game so much. I know it's been seven years, but thank you for making this video! :D

  • @petery6432
    @petery6432 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    29:30 I think the main reason the Bokoblins and the Bulblins capture the kids is to cause chaos and despair. When you come back to Ordon as a Wolf, you can see how devastated the townspeople are. Similarly, King Bulblin coming through and capturing Colin leaves everyone remaining in Kakariko scared to death. Zant presumably had King Bulblin working for him, causing chaos and despair. You actually see Zant make actions to inflict despair on Midna, Zelda, and Link. He curses Midna into a hideous imp and forces her to watch him curse the other Twili and take over the light world, he locks Zelda into a tower under guard and forces her to sit by and watch fear and uncertainty settle on her kingdom, and he curses Link into a wolf, presumably with the intent of Link being trapped in a form that everyone despises for the rest of his life, no longer able to save the world as the reincarnated Hero.

    Just a quick thought to the point if the hero of time was sent back before or after the Deku tree died.
    I am pretty sure the deku was already dead when link entered the timeline again.
    My reason for thinking so is the skull kid. Even in Majoras Mask he remembers link as the boy who played a Song with him.
    An Event that happened after he left the woods for the first time.
    The big question is of course if Link really had a Chance to save the deku tree or if the curse and ghoma would have killed him regardless because of the already done damage.

    2:09:25 so wait, would youbinclude the King going flat out powermad and Ganondorf temporarily becoming an ally? Then resorts to Regicide even after the King agreed to step down and let Zelda rule? I dunno, depending on how badly the king treated his own people that might not have been so unpopular a decision. Hell, executing him might have sparked a THIRD civil war, as those the King most abused saw him as a Martyr who did what any of them would have done in his place.
    Could even have Demise's curse briefly jumpnto the king (only AFTER he's already started making evil decisions of his own will, anything else would cheapen it,) and jump back to Ganondorf when the king loses.

    my theory about ganondorfs death is that Zant was just a metaphysical representation of no power, he wasn't real as he was already dead but more of a reflection of his disconnect from power. The same way he saw Zant in the beginning is the same way he is now seeing himself in the face of the Gods. As he was originally chosen by some twist of fate which also boosted his ego. His death didn't just represent him dying but also losing the triforce after now being deemed unworthy killed his ego, one that was originally born from having the triforce of power in the first place. Just my theory.

    Consider; Zant's twin sword flailing is a frantic and unskilled copy of Ganondorf from Wind Waker.

  • @thedawsonator1628
    @thedawsonator1628 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think a theory I always had for why Power left Ganondorf is this: He is no longer worthy of it.
    Think about it, in OoT, in other games Ganondorf has clearly been involved but here...he delegates power to a powerless fool with nothing, that fool fails utterly, the Ganondorf shows up to battle once everything else has failed to actually do anything that Zant has been doing against a Hyrule that is really damn weak and stagnant and Ganondorf fails to beat the hero there. Does that look like Power to you? It doesn't.
    So the gods saw this and decided Ganondorf was unworthy of holding Power in this timeline and he died. Whereas other timelines still show Ganondorf showing Power. The timeline he wins obviously, and the Adult Timeline he plays a more active role. But In Twilight Princess, Ganondorf squanders it, he was given Power and then squandered it by letting some fool with no worth have his power and laze around in the background and then fail utterly. Ganondorf did not show true power like beforeand so he lost favor with the gods and the Triforce of Power.
    Come to think of it, the wish is probably why Ganondorf died in Wind Waker, the gods agreed with it and that Power would not go to Ganondorf again to get out of where he was, it was time to move on and bury old Hyrule forever and make a new kingdom.

      So while not impossible, I dont think a third unknown party is a strong explanation.

    45:15 - so you're saying she's a Tsundere.
    (This is partially tongue-in-cheek, but I'm also partially serious: I do believe Midna is one of the better done variants of the Tsundere trope, predominantly because she doesn't *stay* Tsundere, and her particular reasons for being that way are extremely reasonable in-character. Effectively, she begins as a foe-forced-friend, moves to non-violent tsundere, and becomes a strong ally and loved one by the end.)

    OMG, I agree with you almost in the entirety. TW is equally tied with OoT as my favorite Zelda game. I will say, though, that I played this game when it first came out on the Wii, and I recall feeling very meh at the final battle. I felt it was very anticlimactic to the rest of the story; however, as I've gotten a bit older I have begun to think of it very differently. I wish I could do a replay, but unfortunately my Wii has gone the way of the Great Deku Tree (may he enjoy it well in the arms of the goddesses), so that isn't a possibility, and I refuse to buy a used console for one game when Nintendo has currently ported EVERY SINGLE 3D MARIO GAME to the bloody switch. Anyway, wanted to say hello and thanks for such a comprehensive review.

      I always assumed it was a while after he had his proper 'happy ending', basically in his elder years as he sought a way to ensure he could pass on his knowledge and skills. I always liked the idea that he took on the Stalfos curse willingly for future generations, one last sacrifice type of deal.

    My biggest gripe with this game is that... Link, at least as I saw him, would have gone to the twilight realm as Midna broke it, trapping himself-
    Because he cared about her just as much as she cared about him. And he had done for Hyrule what he needed to do.
    Ofc the other story option would be him using the triforce to go there/repair the way there. But he wouldnt stay in the light realm.

    I burst out laughing with your "can't wait to be king" section. Yeah, I love Zant too - not every villain has to be on top of things to be effective.
    That said, I don't think your war theory is needed to explain the things in TP. You've already mentioned that Hyrule is being ruled ineffectually by the time of the game, degradation is enough to explain the above aspects. But nice review. TP comes second for me in my Zelda list, and it's nice to see others appreciate it.

I've also been interested in the one they use(d?) for Dungeons and Doritos, but seem to be perpetually short on dosh when I've thought of getting into it. I've recently been given 13th Age, but have had no time or ability to play it, or even really pursue it.
