    When you mentioned the Morrowind merchant with the most gold, I can't believe you neglected to mention that the merchant with the most money was, in fact, a mudcrab.

    I remember loading my save only to hear "Good day, citizen", turning around and see a guard swimming in mid air. By the time I started FRAPS, he reverted to walking. Damnit!

    Biggest reason I disliked scaling level in Oblivion was how "immersion breaking" (and I use this term loosely here) was to see these random bandits start charging at you with daedric armors in the middle of the roads.

    • @jay15951
      @jay15951 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      honestly the daedric armor specificaly makes perfect sense their were oblivion gates all over the place so finding daedric stuff wouldn't have been that hard. now the glass and elven armor that doesn't make sense.

    • @1skrmsp1
      @1skrmsp1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Jay Y.
      I dont know if it makes "perfect" sense. Regular Joe bandits obtaining Daedric Armor that can basically only be obtained from killing Daedra (lore-wise I mean), and then still banditting after wearing basically few thousand gold worth of gear on them. If you judge that from they pay you few hundred gold for high end jobs in the world, thats like wearing a gold worth starting a farm or something. Sure, you CAN explain that away, but its still stretching.

      It was still better than Morrowinds scaling that made you a 1 shot kill god at level 20 and turned it into a borefest ,at least oblivions scaling kept the challenge alive.

      That could be considered a good thing though. It gives a sense of progression. If you get stronger than everyone else why not be able to dominate everyone else?

    Morrowind is like going back to your childhood home. It's just not the same as it was back then no amount of mods (that I've seen) an fix the fact that it's the memory of it that outdoes the reality of playing it. Skyrim is like a Holiday. It's fantastic to be there, the food is great, the drink is great, but you overindulge and you see that it's mainly flavour. It's like a KFC. It tastes great, but won't fill out up.
    Oblivion is home.

    Just wanted to say I'm absolutely happy I found a channel like yours. It's really hard to find good In depth reviews on games. As someone said down below in the comments it's hard to find a review that is not five minutes. I love finding podcasty (is that a word) videos/channels that are actually a good length. I have a 45-50 minute drive to work early in the morning and love listening to these kinds of videos on the way. Thank you.

    If there's one negative that I'd lay down on Oblivion it's the Hero of Cyrodiil. I know, weird, but for me, and this is just my perosnal opinion, I never really felt like I was all that important in Oblivion. I'll grant that the game does a good job of acknowledging your accomplishments, like with the whole Hero of Kvatch thing. But unlike being the Neravarine or even the Dragonborn, I never felt like the Champion of Cyrodiil was this be-all, end-all puzzle piece to complete the universe like those two others were. To me s/he just felt like a person who happened to be in the right place at the right time. Who knows, maybe that was the point.
    Anyway, I'd say the distinction of "Hero" in Oblivion goes to Martin Septim rather than the main character. If anything I was just the guy who ran errands for him and delivered his mail -_-

    • @badarbiter
      @badarbiter 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Personally, that's one of the reasons why Oblivion is my favorite of the Elder Scrolls. You weren't a person of destiny who came to save the world. You aren't a reincarnation of someone important. You were a regular person who through hard work gained his/her skills and helped save the Empire. You become powerful because you WANTED to become powerful, not because destiny SAID you have to be powerful to fill some sort of role. It's also a lot easier to roleplay as, say, a guard, or baker, or fisher, or what have you when you aren't really forced into a role of savior.

    • @Xelpherpolis
      @Xelpherpolis 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      badarbiter Nah, Uriel Septim specifically says that he had visions and dreams about you at the beginning of the game. Make no mistake, the Hero of Kvatch was just as much a hero of destiny as the Neravarine and Dragonborn were. It's just that his/her destiny was to run errands for Martin Septim.

    • @thomasfitzpatrick1821
      @thomasfitzpatrick1821 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      badarbiter I find games that place you at the centre of the universe very boring most of the time, it's overdone; and I despise game narratives that tell me how awesome and important my character is, I find it frankly insulting to my intelligence.
      But while Oblivion's main quest line doesn't follow the cliche of making you the Destined Hero, it instead casts you in the role of a guy that the Destined Hero hired to do all the work, and complete all of the quests, with no assistance from the Hero or his personal army of elite warrior monks, and with no real promise of reward or recognition. You take on the pressures of the Destined Hero with none of the benefits. As far as the main quest goes, the Hero of Kvatch appears an exceptional person only by the virtue that everyone else is lazy, incompetent and likely drunk.

    • @badarbiter
      @badarbiter 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thomas Fitzpatrick I see it more like Eddie Riggs from Brutal Legend. You are the one whose skilled in combat, magic, and can fight large groups of people. But you aren't the hero. Martin is. He's the one who faces the final boss, he's the one the bad guys are trying to destroy, he's the one who can permanently close the gates, and he's the reason you are sent by the Emperor on your quest. Your role in the game is to protect the hero and help him save the world. In essence you're Han Solo to Martin's Luke Skywalker, or the Aragorn to his Frodo. Martin was a priest, he has no combat experience he couldn't do what the Hero of Kvatch could do. So instead he relies upon you to help him save the world. Your character isn't the destined hero but still a hero none the less.
      You are actually rewarded, by the way. You get the Imperial Dragon Armor, which is usually only worn by Emperors and are hailed as the Champion of Cyrodiil. You can become a member of the Blades, who DID help you along the way, including the sewer missions, the Great Gate mission, the end of the main quest mission, and the Blades are doing their job, and not letting Martin die.
      Of course your character likely did it mostly because it was the only way to stop a demonic invasion of the world rather than because of any of that, but it's up to the player to decide their characters motives.

    • @thomasfitzpatrick1821
      @thomasfitzpatrick1821 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Okay, I was wrong on one point, the Blades do indeed help sometimes.
      While you get no assistance in battling the reanimated skeletons of great warriors, the Blades do send their least competent bodyguard to help you fight small vermin in a sewer. And when the Great Gate opens they send a whopping six dudes, one of said dudes being Martin, the guy whose safety is so vital to the fate of the world that the Blades could only afford to send five soldiers and Martin to help in the battle, while the others had to remain at the fort to guard Martin.
      While Eddie Riggs has a similar sort of role to H.O. Kvatch, the major difference is that Riggs was important to the story, whether he took all of his deserved credit or slipped away unnoticed in a very metal display of humility is irrelevant, what's important is that he was vital to the outcome of the plot, the good guys wouldn't have won without his help. H.O. Kvatch's presence in the main quest is unnecessary.
      I feel a little redundant when I'm sent alone towards almost certain death under orders from an army of elite samurai who could get this stuff done much more efficiently. Riggs had knowledge and abilities that made him invaluable, and he was always left to handle the jobs involving certain death because everyone knew he was the only guy who could possibly survive. Most importantly, the other Ironhead lieutenant actually helped out. The Hero of Kvatch is just picking up the slack for a bunch of lazy chuckle-heads.

    Something quite interesting has just occurred to me - you talk here about the need for each game's protagonist to be removed from the picture, the Nerevarine goes to Akavir and the hero of Cyrodiil becomes the next Sheogorath. Do you think it's likely then that Skyrim's dragonborn is similarly removed by becoming bound to Apocrypha as Hermaeus Mora's mortal champion?

    • @BoxStudioExecutive
      @BoxStudioExecutive 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But if the Dragonborn does the thieves guild quest, he's promised to Nocturnal. And there's a host of other entities that can lay claim to the Dragonborn's soul.

    • @peterma3560
      @peterma3560 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But the last Dragonborn never left. A small detail people seem to miss is that there is no exit for the Black Book you used to go to Miraak BEFORE you defeat him. The shrine with the exit only appeared after Miraak died. It is very possible that the exit never appeared in lore, meaning the Last Dragonborn is alive, but trapped in Apocrypha with no way to return to Nirn. Therefore Nocturnal can't claim his/hers soul, since he is still alive.

    • @jmk3178
      @jmk3178 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoxStudioExecutive Yeah yeah, 2 years, all right... The thing about side quests is that they are *side* quests. They don't need to happen, and they don't need to have been done by the main character. In theory, anyone could've done them, if anyone did them at all. But the Dragonborn expansion questline is something that *needs* to be done, and needs to be done by the Dragonborn. It's much more definitive, and therefore much more likely to be canonical if such a thing ever needs to be referenced down the line.

    Just wanted to say, i love your analyses! I came across your channel one day looking for an analysis or in-depth review (i like that kind of stuff) of Morrowind that wasn't just a 5 minute video of someone saying "Yeah dogg it's pretty good" and i was delighted to see you have even more videos! When I first played Oblivion, i loved the hell out of the game and played it seemingly endlessly. However, I went back to try and replay it a year or two ago, and didn't like it at all. That being said, watching this video really urged me to give the game another chance, so I went back and started to play it again. I can now say that I once again enjoy Oblivion, thanks to you, lol. I saw on another one of your videos (might have been older, but oh well) that you read through all your comments, so I thought I'd leave you this nice note. Keep up the awesome work! :-)

    one of the main reasons i love skyrim more than Oblivion is because the map of cyrodiil is literally just a generic height map with neatly placed boulders everywhere with no kind of interesting variation at all. where as in Skyrim the rocks and the land formations are incredibly interesting and every area looks totally unique. it makes it so so so sooo much more fun to explore Skyrim... i never feel like there is even a reason to explore cyrodiil. especially since you can fast travel everywhere right from the start. Skyrim is my favourite of the 3 even though i grew up playing Oblivion

    the pie chart tried to simulate a conversation. If you actually tried to understand how it works, you'd realize that the four parts were just parts of a generic conversation and you would have to prioritize the parts the ai positively responded to the most. I'm not defending it, it definitely could have been implemented better, but making generic conversation into a mini-game isn't easy. At least it wasn't as bad as fables that shit was plain stupid.

    In morrowind, if you killed someone plot critical, you would receive the message "the prophecy has been severed and load another game or continue in the doomed world you have created." So you are made aware of it, and have the choice to either keep playing or load.

      Also, you couldn't unlock everything in the world with lockpicking. For example the "Cavern of the Incarnate" Can only be accessed 4 hours a day. There were other places like this as well.

    • @JustGrowingUp84

      The developers included a back door to finish the main quest - without actually playing most of the main quest. Of course, you can also mess *that* up, but even then, you can still finish the main quest!

    • @HolyknightVader999
      @HolyknightVader999 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheFilthyCasual
      And they had to include that back door because people can be stupid and not save often (or have their saves corrupted) and they might wind up killing a plot-critical character by accident and be unable to finish the game without starting over.

    • @JustGrowingUp84

I work in the media, and your opinions and critiques of games and of every EP of Star trek (I've gone through TNG and am at S7 of DS9 and love listening to your rundown after an ep) are excellent. I especially like when you improve upon a plot or narrative idea and come up with a reasonable or interesting angle with far more thought than the writers seemed to have put in at times!
    Appreciate you man, keep doing what you do and I hope you have the means to do that.

    I just wish the physics engine didn't effect the regular objects in the world, like cups, food, ect.
    They finally gave us the option to buy houses then made it impossible to decorate them. Decorating my house in Morrowind and displaying all the unique loot was one of my favorite things to do. It made your adventure's and journeys feel more relevant.
    A simple solution would be to make it so any object set down by the player will have it's collision mesh disabled.
    That was my one gripe with Oblivion, it's still my favorite game in the series. I'll never forget leaving the sewers and seeing the world for the first time, breathtaking.

    I tried to play Morrowind after Skyrim and Oblivion because people constantly talked down on those two games and always went on about how much better Morrowind was. So I decided to give it a shot, after all it could very well actually BE better, and I couldn't get into it. I liked the atmosphere, I liked the setting. It was very unique and I genuinely wanted to know more about the culture of Morrowind. But, and this is just a personal thing, I couldn't get far into it because of the mechanics. Specifically for me was the Magicka and Stamina system. The magicka system basically makes playing as a mage downright impossible as it doesn't naturally recharge. Then, and this surprised me, was the fact that spells FIZZLE. Now that might be alright in a game where magic regenerates, but it DOESN'T in the older games. Good luck trying to be a mage, or just trying to heal yourself. The fact that you lose stamina by running and the fact that EVERY. LAST. ACTION requires stamina no matter what it is made me aggravated. I would want to run from city a to point b and to city b, but in doing so I get attacked on the way by monsters and I'm tired because I just wanted to get there slightly faster so I do very little damage per hit while taking hits and I only could heal myself three times before running out of magicka. That's even assuming my spell didn't just fizzle out and I lose all my magicka trying to cast one spell because for some reason it just messes up. Being realistic is fine, but not if it's to the detriment of the gameplay.
    As much as some people deride the newer Elder Scrolls as being 'dumbed' down I prefer the fast travel system, map markers, and most importantly, recharging magicka and no loss of stamina from simply running than the older games often times unforgiving nature. Count me as one of those who wants a good remake of Morrowind with an update to the mechanics of the game. I'd buy it, and the other, older games in a heart beat if they got their mechanics and gameplay made similar to the newer games.

But oh well, whatever you want to do, so glad you finally finished it at least.

    I had the feeling for years that Oblivion was a black sheep for the modern Elder Scrolls series, even having the opinion that it was the worst out of III-IV-V, but this past fall I went back to revisit it and honestly I had to put it at the top of my personal list as well. In hindsight I get the impression that both Morrowind and Skyrim push a player to max stats to either hit (Morrowind's Agility) or whatever was the player's preferred play style (Skyrim) where Oblivion allowed you to go "I want to make X style of character, this is how I'm going to do it!" approach, and if you really wanted to stick to the plan, you could do it.
    In Morrowind, I eventually became crazy murder man who had all the world's treasure in that house in Balmora, who's original owner laid dead on the floor because wanted to sell me "Exquisite Robes" 1 more Gold than I was willing to part with. I eventually built a sky scraper with just books atop that house and spent most of my nights in Caldera on Creeper's floor because hustlin' was only for the strong. I think there was some great Prophecy to full fill but I got lost some where and I was tired of taking orders from Shirtless George Washington. In Skyrim, I became a Thief, incidentally, but a Thief who had insane super powers, such as hot breath, and push breath.
    Anyways, great video as always, Arch!

    I think the best part of the Elder scrolls IV: Oblivion is the dark elf after you become the grand champion. I remember when I beat the Gray Prince and how his dark elf friend turns around and hates you because he makes you realize how death impacts others in the game and I felt that one little guy really brought the reality of death in oblivion actually had weight.

    The first time I completed morrowind was without uniting the ashlanders or the great houses. I used 100 lockpick to break into Vivec's palace and I read some scrolls in there to find out where Sunder and Keening were and had to use them without Wraithguard to protect me. It took a lot of health potions to destroy the heart of Lorkhan. Amazing level of freedom.

    i always understood that lorkan, we see his heart in morrowind, was the anker and start for the material plane but to make it permanent and to seperate it from the other deadric spheres i always undersood it that the divine sacrificed themselfs to make up the world they dont interact beceause dont exist as sentient beings anymore they are woven in the very fabric of the world they give the world fabric so to speak the make the world, tamriel, the unique world it is, so lorkans domain was transformed by the divine to what it is now but what the divine where probably deadra like beings but of the oposite polarity thats what drove them to do what they did

    Your speculation on the Daedra also made me think... It would seem that all of the deities are specific aspects of existence that instinctually function to keep the universe going. Lorkhan is dead, and his corpse serves as the physical bones of the world. The Aedra are the 9 (previously 8) forces that attempt to hold things together. The positive force. The Daedra are the 16 (previously 15) forces that attempt to tear things apart. The negative force. Tiber Septim became an Aedroth, and Trinimac became a Daedroth. Septim was able to stabilize Tamriel into an empire and maintain it that way because 8 becoming 9 is a bigger relative increase than 15 becoming 16. However everything always moves towards entropy, destruction is easier than creation, and that's because there still are more of the Daedra than there are of the Aedra. The inability of the Daedra to completely overpower the influence of the Aedra by sheer strength of numbers is their hostility towards each other (Although there is no evidence to suggest that the Aedra are or aren't working together). One must also take into account the fact that of the original 24 deities, 9 including Lorkhan were able to go against the wishes of the 15 when creating the world, so they might in fact have been more powerful.

    I'd argue that Tribunal and Bloodmoon are expansions, not because of the amount or quality of the content, but rather the new mechanics.
    The WeaponSheathed variable that was missing from the main game but was introduced with Bloodmoon, or the script to disallow Levitation in Tribunal opened up new mechanics which allowed modders to create mods that just weren't compatible with the main game.

    You should make a video about Elder Scrolls lore, @Lorerunner :)
    I'm big on ES lore myself, and is something that I always want to see more exposed with real quality (like all of your vids I've seen... top notch quality.)
    It's something that is very scarce on youtube (for anyone reading this comment: no, Shoddycast doesn't count... it's the equivalent of reading a sensationalist tabloid newspaper and thinking what you're reading is the reality :P)
    There's a ton of cool stuff to explain and explore in the deeper lore, even only taking into account in-game material only (if you're so inclined to do.)
    I've not seen all of your videos yet, so it may be so that you already did this... in that case, sorry... I'll probably find out eventually!
    BTW, off topic here, sorry for the sideline, but I wanted to say: your video "Rumination Analysis on Mass Effect 3" was one of the best explained and reasoned exposures I've ever seen on the subject. Top notch quality stuff there. Thank you!

    The levelling system... To this day, almost a decade after I've played Oblivion, I still don't know if I like it or not. I've pretty much mastered it's mechanics, so I can do what I want with it, but I guess the main problem I have is: if you want to level up and keep up with enemies, you have to start planning what skills to level and gaming starts becoming meta-gaming. And while I like planning I hate playing like EVERYTHING has to be planned. Like every skill that levels has to be the one planned to minmax everything.
    So I just use a levelling mod that pretty much gives attributes based on what skill levels you have and updates automatic. So, if I want STR, I raise the attributes that STR governs. It is a lot more enjoyable that way.

    About that "Tamriel is a Plane of Oblivion thing" and that the divines seperatet it, you could take that a step further. What if the Divines seperatet Tamriel to create a "Free" plane, so the Deadra have a Place that they can actually "influence" or "manipulate"? What if Tamriel only exists to keep the Deadra from beeing bored? And a other tought, what if that keeps them from beeing so bored that they say, "to hell with all reality we confront each other directly"? What if Tamriel is basicly a "placeholder" War in a could war szenario for the Deadra?
    And your "a weak emperor is a bad thing" reminds me of the often misquotete part of "The Prince" from Makjavelli: "A good leader has to be bouth feared and loved, but if you can only achive one or the ohter it is better to be feared than to be loved."
    Oh and about retroactive time magic i love to share Terry Pratchett : "Yes it was always there, but was it always there yesterday?"

    I actually knew people who couldn't find Balmora until I showed them only for them to never find Caius Cosades (might have the name wrong, it's been like 10yrs). There was a couple who literally couldn't beat any missions so they'd play it just to play it, only focusing on leveling up and finding a house they like and kill the owner and move in, after that one of them would always play it and only went out to find gear to store in their home. I always thought that we pretty cool cause I nornally play to beat a game whereas a few people in this one weren't even interested in beating it, they only cared about playing it

    The Aedra are simply Daedra who took part in the creation of Nirn. They lost a lot of their power in the process and their free will. Their destiny and existence is now permanently tied to Nirn.
    They didn't claim Nirn willingly. They were tricked by Lorkhan into doing it.

    I love that Skyrim setting much much more (cold & sharp winter lands. mysteries behind the snow, werewolves, vampires, dragons, snow elves... - perfect!) BUT STILL for some reason my favorite Elder Scrolls game is Oblivion. It is hard to pick exactly why is that but it simply is, perhaps because Skyrim was really too convenient. Also just like you said, I am compelled to play Oblivion again and again, try different things - whereas with Skyrim after 4 different characters I simply do not have desire to really come back.
    I do not think that Aedra are Daedra, it simply feels too contradictive overall.
    Also one bad thing about Oblivion that seems you forgot to mention - Lockpicking - it was horrible.

  • @jay15951

    Lorerunner i found this very interesting. but i think that the aedra being daedra is a bit odd. it's far more likely that they are opposites, two sides of the same coin sure but not the same very similar in their powers perhaps. but looking at the similarities in the creation myth(es) of all the cultures it is clear that the aedra and daedra are similar but different. hence why a daedric artifact can be weilded by anyone but an aedric artifact will not work if you offend the divines the gautlests of the crusader for example. and how you can't wear the armor if you have infamy. then theirs the whole issue about sovenguard and atherious. i just think that it's a bit of a leep in logic to assume they are the same

  • @Darkstorm000
    @Darkstorm000 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can shed a little light on your explanation about the Aedra and the Daedra. They are the same species, called the Et Ada, direct creations of the mixing of the clashing power of Anu and Padomay. The Daedra are the Et Ada who chose not to take place in the creation of Mundus, the plane of existence that contains Nirn. Their name translates to "Not Our Ancestors", while conversely, the Aedra = "Our Ancestors". the Aedra are the ones who took part in the creation of Mundus. Mundus was created within the Void, not Oblivion in itself. Mehrunes Dagon essentially tried to lay claim to Mundus, and indeed Molag Bal tried to before hand, but only to prove the apparent "weakness" of the Aedra, not due to any legitimate claim. The Elder Scrolls are a fragment of the power of original creation. In essence, they are metaphysical manifestations of the limitless powers of Anu and Padomay. This is how and why the power of the scrolls can supercede the powers of even the Aedra and the Daedra. But the powers of the Scrolls are never set in stone. Akatosh is the embodiment of linear time, the Elder Scrolls however exist outside of the limits of linear time, as they were created BEFORE Akatosh came into being.

    Although it is a cliché complaint that the level scaling is broken. In order to overcome it (without mods) requires the player to be very savvy to what they must focus on levelling and the manner in which they go about it.
    Nobody wants to have to stop the game and do a ton of maths homework to optimise their build.

    The Aedra and Daedra were once one and the same. The now Aedra were like "Hey, let's make this magical place!" And used almost all of their power to create Nirn, leaving them drained. The Daedric Princes are the beings who refused to help out, thus the reason they're still so powerful; they never gave up their power to aid in creation.

  • @jimbob3332
    @jimbob3332 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have to disagree that the Daedric Princes are in any form an anchor to reality. The spirits that became the Daedric Princes refused to participate in Lorkhan's plan of creating Mundus where as the Aedra and many others agreed and became trapped or otherwise confined to it. The reason the Daedra are able to so directly manifest and interfere with the mortal plane is because they weren't weakened in creating Mundus because they had no involvement with it.
    As for being entirely focused on their spheres, like Sheogorath with insanity or Hircine with Hunting, that's sort of a 'god' thing. They are what they are, it's their whole identity. As for the idea that the reappearance of Jygalag affecting the world by making it more orderly, I don't think works either considering the Grey March was stopped in much the same way it had been for ages before. I'm pretty sure the curse of changing Jygalag to Sheogorath happened long before men and mer emerged on Nirn.

    (cracks nuckles) Arch, this was a great video, but I have to say, there is plenty of History of the TES Universe that is set in stone. For example how Padomy and Anu created the universe after Alduin devoured the previous Kalpa. Which by the way, was Tamriel as an ocean planet ruled by the Dreggs. The Aedra (and yes you said it correctly) are the children of Anu and Padomy. The Daedra are children of Padomy, hence their chaotic nature. This of course brings into question the very nature and origin of Jyggalayg since Anu is Stasis, or Order. The Daedra don't fight each other because it is a pointless option. The Princes are literally invincible, they cannot be destroyed by anything. Tamriel as a setting works in weird ways as you said. The Divines DO exist, because the people of Nirn believe that they do. TES is a world where belief = reality. That is why Talos is, without question, a Divine, and why the Thalmor seek to purge the believers. If they can destroy everyone who believes, he will no longer be Divine. Akatosh appears, with Martin's help, in full view of the world. We can see the proof of his existence. Mehrunes Dagon himself was also not a Daedra at one point, he was the Leper King Lekloga, who tried to hide parts of various Kalpa's from Alduin's purges. Alduin found out and devoured him, cursing him to the form of Dagon forever until he destroys all the parts he hid from Alduin. There is much more of course, but the (very geeky) point has been made lol. I could talk TES for years like you said, theres just so much to talk about. Loved hearing your thoughts, as always.
