    The Link is Dead theory doesn't even hold up in the game. Here's the proof:
    In Japan, Eyes are very important to the character's soul. In the game we see The Deku, Dora, and Goron die in the game (the ones we get the masks from). When you make the statue copies of Deku Link, Goron Link, or Zora Link, the statues are pupil-less eyes. The Only statue that has it's eyes still is Young Link. They would not have done that if Link was Dead.

    The 'good guys vs bad guys' is the result of having lost _a lot_ in translation. See, in the original, japanese writing Majora, or rather Mujula's 'other game' is tag. It's actually called Oni Gokko in Japan, which translates to 'pretending to be an Oni'. The Fierce Deity Mask, when its name is translated from Japanese is the Oni God Mask. After 'Mujula' gives Link the 'Kishin no Kamen', he says 'Good…You’re the oni. The oni just runs away. Even so, that’s fine.' However, in the actual Oni Gokko, the Oni is the one who's 'it'. I'm not sure if this is connected to Mujula's backwards idea of Oni Gokko, but Skull Kid's japanese name translates to 'Little Oni'. My thought is that Mujula's idea of what 'the Little Oni' was doing with the mask's power was running away from his problem, so to Mujula when he names Link the Oni in their 'game', he expects that Link will just do what 'the Little Oni' did.

      Isn't Skull Kid named "sutarukiddo" (stalkid) in japanese though? Is little oni a nickname that gets brought up in the grandmother's stories or by the Giants or something? Because Stal definitely doesn't relate to oni, it's just a made up term for skeleton creatures in Zelda
      I'm fascinated by this connection though, the line ties the game together better than the english translation

    Just found this video, just heard your thoughts on the 3DS Twinmold fight and how the Red Lanmola has too much health. Want to point out that the problem is actually something entirely different. Its 'weakpoint counter' is bugged. If it burrows into the sand after you punch it a few times but before you've exposed its weakpoint, its weakpoint counter resets. That means you have to hit it enough to expose its weakpoint (around 10 times) in one flight cycle, and it's in trying to do that that the range of Giant Link's attacks can be infuriating.
    There are a couple interesting things about that fight though. First there are two giant stone spheres; one in each of two corners of the arena. If you hit the Red Lanmola with one while it's flying around it puts it straight into its vulnerable state. Second; and this could be called an easter egg, but when you grab the Red Lanmola's tail, if you rotate the circle pad while Link is swinging it around, he swings it around faster and the slam that does the damage does more damage. If you do that everytime the Red Lanmola is in its vulnerable state, it dies after three times.
    I know this isn't about the focus of your video, but as something that seems quite bothersome to you from a gameplay perspective, it's something that might impact your view of the fight if you keep them in mind.

    Going along with your theory that Majora was an ancient tribe member, and that a soul is needed to create a mask....What if the reason that Majora is so childish was because the mask was created using the soul of a child? Same with the other bosses, what if those kids really are the bosses, but just their true forms. It would add another layer of tragedy to the game knowing that.

      @Getreidekeks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@akward4210 of course I insist on the English pronunciation. I dont know why it seems so hard for you to see but you'll never get a good old Italian pronunciation from an American for example. Not to mention the fact that you dont just switch languages, an Italian and a german person will have different ways to pronounce a letter for example, so if you want the german to learn it you have to explain it to them with the german equivalent.
      What good does it do for you to write "o" over and over when it's pronounced completely differently by Americans?
      Come on that's such a basic thing

    • @akward4210
      @akward4210 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Getreidekeks It's literally as easy as saying "o", as in "oh", rather than "aw". "o" exists in the English alphabet, English is also heavily Latin-based despite it being a Germanic language, so Americans are more than capable of pronouncing Italian words without changing the phonetics entirely. I'm not asking to adopt an Italian accent to say the word perfectly, I'm saying that there should be a better awareness as to where the words we speak come from and how they are pronounced, and that Americans need to stop thinking that their way of doing things is good enough; it's lazy. Nobody is insisting that we pronounce "jalapeño" like "jaw-la-pe-no", and not "ha-la-pe-nyo", just because the letter "ñ" doesn't exist in the English alphabet. And, yes, people are capable of switching languages all the time, just ask anyone who's immigrated anywhere.

    Late to the party and I can't find my ocarina. XD
    What a wonderful Video with great thoughts.
    Your opinion of Majora being one of the ancients is not outlandish at all. I have my own little crazy theory of who the ancients were and what happened to them.
    But that's not the point.
    I saw a comment here about what if the ancients used the soul of a child to create Majora... and this made my head run some laps.
    I don't think They used a child but maybe something similar. What if these six ancients (Majora, the Salesman and the moonchildren) were a family?
    Majora allways had strangly female voice tones in the bossfight... especially in the final form Majoras Wrath with the whips.
    There is strong theme of love and family in the game in eveyone of the first three areas.
    A kidnapped princess,
    A goron child crying,
    A Zora mother losing her eggs (and I still believe Mikau was the father to the eggs)
    Even in Ikana we have the cursed father and his daughter.
    Clocktown is filled with tragedy in families... Anju and Kafei, Romani and her sister, the seemingly orphaned bombers trying to help and on top of all even the most random character tingle is tied to that theme.
    So what if the ancients created Majoras Mask with soul of a mother?
    Maybe the kids died before and although she tried to help, the grieve in her soul became more and more a part of the mask, until the ancients deemed the mask too powerful and dangerous... and sealed the mask.
    And what if the search of the happy mask salesman for the mask is the search of a husband for his wifes last remains... to find and save what is left of her.
    While Majora deperatly tries to reconnect with the children, knowing their afterlife is on the moon.
    Jealous of all the living and happines she messes with them.
    Majora doesn't care how she reconnects with her children. Either reaching them physicly or dieing and joining them in death by bringing their realm... the moon down.
    That would explain why the Kids help you to gain the fierce deity.
    They know Majoras hate would kill them all.
    Still... you kill their mother... you're the bad guy.
    I like the idea that we killed the mask, inkarnation and the wrath, but saved the soul who can now reconnect with the children. Leaving the mask powerless.
    The salesman seems bittersweet that the powers are gone. Sad because he lost the last remain of his wifes soul, happy because she found peace finally.
    Maybe he vanished at the end because he can rest now as well after he fullfilled his desire of saving his wife.
    A theme Link will repeat like an endless cycle and also will only be able to find peace after he prepared his relative as good as he could.
    Final thought on that one...
    The happy mask salesman is exactly that... a salesman with a happy mask, because he saw what grieve and hate did to his wife. He wanted to make her happy again... and free souls of their pain.
    This gives another layer to the fact why he knows the Song of healing.
    Well... maybe a bit outlandish but hopefully still an enjoyable read.^^

    Great video, very interesting points. However, this is the first time that I've disagreed with one of your theories, probably ever. I don't really think that the Icana are necessarily "grey" assuming they built the stone tower. The stone tower is pretty clearly designed to look disturbing and ugly and I think that's reflective of their culture and what they worshiped. I was kind of on-board with the anti worship of the 3 goddesses theory and I don't like that they removed the triforce from the 3ds version. It made a hell of a lot of sense to me, that the ancient tribe worshiped the opposite, especially since Termina is literally upside down from Hyrule. When you first enter the clocktower your camera flips upside down, the forest temple effect if you will.
    So I think when they were trying to summon some kind of god or anti god on top of the stone tower or something like that. It's interesting, consider the people of Hyrule look to the sky for hope and to worship their goddesses but in Termina people fear what's in the sky, the moon. Of course Majora is responsible for this but that brings it back to the ancient tribe. I think the Ancient tribe ruined everything for Termina by over extending their worship of Majora or whatever the hell they were doing in that tower and in the game you're making up for this by destroying the evil they created/summoned/found, permanently. I really like the concept that the 3 gods aren't the only all powerful forces in the zelda universe and there is kind of a "devil" figure in the zelda world, I don't think Majora is necessarily the devil but I think he/she/it could be one of them, this is a parallel/opposite universe to Hyrule so maybe there are 3 of them like the 3 goddesses and Majora is only one of them and we also don't destroy Majora, only the mask. Also the mask isn't restricted to Termina, it's power is probably stronger in Termina but it can still travel to Hyrule, when you get jumped by the skull kid in the beginning of the game, you're probably in Hyrule.
    I found your theory that Majora isn't completely evil to be fascinating and I kind of agree with it, compare it to the daedric princes in Oblivion, they aren't all completely "evil," same logic could be applied here. Majora has a very childish personality, which is probably why the skull kid was such an appealing host for him. I agree with pretty much everything you said about the happy mask salesman. It's really clear he has powers of some kind, when you enter Termina for the first time, right through the upside down hallway, the door shuts behind you and he literally just appears behind you when you get to the top of the stairs... No boxes to hide behind, nothing, just appears, creepy too. It would absolutely make sense that he'd be an ancient that was traveling between dimensions, freely, to try to find the mask but somehow it got to Hyrule and I have no idea how it got there. I am actually really glad the skull kid stole the mask off of him because I do not trust the happy mask salesman at all with that mask, his intentions are probably malicious and his morals, and sanity for that matter, are completely thrown out the window in his mind. When you return to him without the mask he literally picks you up and shakes you like crazy, doing that to a young kid in real life could literally break their neck and kill them and what's to stop him from throwing you against a wall there too, don't trust the guy one bit.
    So I think that's what it comes down to for me, that Hyrule is the dimension where the 3 goddesses have more power and Termina is the place where the "other" have more power, whatever that may be, and they are literally upside down to each other and they intersect in weird ways. I really, really want a new Zelda game that is set in Termina so they can expand upon this place further and add more extremely vague, speculative content for everyone to read into, it's great stuff and it's a horrible shame that they haven't done anything with that location since year 2000. I'm exited for that wind waker rumination but I'll probably have much less to say about that.

    • @Tamacat388
      @Tamacat388 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Paladin Waffles Some have speculated that Midna and Twili are connected to the mask and may be where the gods from Termina come from. There are similarities with the design of Twili artifacts and Midna's stone hat has the same eye design as Majoras Mask. There may be some more concrete connections made in the new Zelda to connect these two given it'll be an open world and they can throw in all kinds of easter eggs giving us more to speculate on.

    Some very interesting theories here, that can very well tie into my own theories. I had always figured that the moon children were created by Majora(due to Skull Kid influencing Majora's psyche)/the moon. That they could be their own individual people is something I never gave any thought to. Its a valid theory but not one I lean towards. You can read mine here:
    zeldauniverse.net/forums/index.php/Thread/176800-Termina-s-Faith-The-Fuel-For-The-Fierce-Deity-s-Mask/
    I do have to think Majora is somewhat evil though, if only for its "I will consume everything" line. Its forms in the final boss fight do lend credence to your theory but I attribute those mainly towards the time it spent using Skull Kid as its mask. From what I have read, the whole you're the bad guy thing in the original Japanese translated to Oni, having to do with a children's game. Due to that I am not sure that any theory using the English translation of that part are wholly valid. I do think that as written in English it improves the scene, with Majora seemingly viewing Link as the bad guy due to him running away(resetting time).
    Great rumination all in all. As a devout MM fan, I have read many interpretations and theories and you still managed to bring forth fairly valid arguments for theories I have never seen elsewhere or ever even passingly considered. You always manage to do so, which is why I think you doubt yourself too much when you believe you can't add to the discussion on games like Shadow of the Colossus.

    Dude, your theory is the same theory that some people have about the real Tower of Babel. Are you familiar with it at all? Your theory sounds exactly like it.
    Legend goes that Babylon had constructed the Tower of Babel so high so that they might reach into heaven to conquer heaven, kill God and become gods themselves. What is the height of hubris if not to believe oneself worth enough to sit God’s throne.
    The theory is that assuming ancient civilizations had futuristic technology that the Tower of Babel wasn’t about height, that the “tower” portion of the name is a misnomer. Rather Babylon had constructed a way to pass into different dimensions via something like a stargate. Wether it was a mechanical for of technology or spirit form, as in conjuring energy via magiks so strong that one would rip a veil between our dimension and other neither here nor there but I just found that interesting that your theory was very similar.

    Just wish I could have played as adult link. Lol idk why but as a kid after playing OOT and not being able to be adult link bothered me so much I avoided the game for so long. This game has so much that’s cool about it though and the overall vibe is what makes it great.

    Sort of late, but I got a counterargument to the Dead Link theory. TP Link is OoT Link's direct descendant. That means he should've married (most likely Malon) and had kids and died in battle

    That´s a really well thought out analyzis as always but I was hoping for your final theory to be more undermined with official statements / facts. The whole "Majora IS a child / member of the old clan"-thing doesn´t go well with what we see in the The Legend Of Zelda Majoras Mask: Original Side Story Manga. Majora is the soul of a human eating monster sealed within a piece cut out of his armor that was arranged to look and work like a mask. The devourer was forced to dance for three days before he died and in my opinion it´s just plausible that the evil soul wanted to punish the humans in a similarly cruel, time consuming manner and that the child themes that come with Majoras behaviour are remnants of the original skull kid. He wanted to be with his friends and let himself be consumed by self doubt so much that his mind ends up scattered, in the state of the children we see after entering the plane inside the moon.
    Great job anyways. I love your videos.

    I'm confused, you say only Links consciousness was sent back but what about adult Links body? I always assumed Zelda somehow de-ages Link seeing as the Hyrule Historia says the hero of time disappears in that timeline.

    • @Lorerunner
      @Lorerunner  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Vearsin I'm pretty sure a body without a consciousness in it would do what most bodies do in that situation. Though given that this is Zelda I imagine it would be less 'rotting corpse' and more 'reduced to nothing'.

    • @Vearsin
      @Vearsin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lorerunner Huh, that's kinda sad. Although I suppose its better than turning into a stalfos or being killed by Ganondorf like in the other timelines. Appreciate the response.

    I wasn't born in the early 90s. I was born in 2000. I know how much of a pain in the ass it is to get your hands on video games because I live in the country, and I literally cannot get internet. Plus, the stores nearby always run low on newer games.

    So in regards to how Link was so easily knocked out in the beginning of MM:
    When we first see Link in the game, he looks fairly downtrodden. There are two reasons for this:
    1. My thoughts on this were that Link and Epona have been in the Lost Woods for quite a while and therefore exhausted when we see them. Rather obvious I suppose, but also consider that...
    2. Link has just been thrown out of Kokiri Village. I don't know when Link comes back after the events of OoT, but I believe its after the death of the Deku Tree. Remember that right after you finish with the Deku Tree, Mido banishes Link from the village and if the other events of Oot don't happen in this timeline, I'd imagine that stuck.
    Keeping these ideas in mind, it kind of makes sense that Link would be so exhausted and depressed after everything he's gone through that he would have a near impossible time getting back up after getting knocked out, and keep in mind that he WAS knocked out; the developers easily could have had a sleeping Link serve as the catalyst to the events of the game, as they do in plenty of other Zelda titles.
    The Lost Woods are the perfect representation of Link's sense of loss. He's just lost his home, his friends, his future, and his way (and if you want to look too deep into it, looking for someone named Navi suggests a loss of direction as well). It would have been easy for him to just stay down (as many evidently do, based of the legends of the Woods), but because he is the literal embodiment of courage (Triforce or not), he gets back up. That doesn't sound like much, but getting back up after losing everything actually can be quite a feat.
    I also think that going into the game with that mindset sets up MM beautifully. Its with that aching sense of loss that he then helps everyone in Termina come to terms with theirs, but he never does find what he was looking for; guessing by his fate in TP, he never did find Navi.
    A fair amount of rambling, but there are the seeds of a good theory in there I promise.

      Also, any ideas on where the Fierce Deity mask came from? If the transformation masks are manifestations of souls from beings that have died unfulfilled, a mask that looks like Link and is called the Fierce Deity has fascinating implications.

      The only thing wrong with that is that it was confirmed that that was not the lost woods but somewhere else entierly unspecified.

    I have yet to find a version of MM I enjoy playing. The new and old versions are clunky for different reasons, which makes time management more of a chore than it should be. The new version also has weaker atmosphere and worse bosses, which is a shame.

    I disagree Majora's Mask is much darker than Twilight Princess and twilight princess fails at trying to hard to be dark. I don't really like TP at all. Midna and the dungeons are awesome. Everything else not so much. Chyde109 made a video about and it expressed it better than I ever could. I think TP is a decent game but not very good by Zelda standards.

      Oh yeah. TP tried so hard to be dark and dramatic. Felt really fake whereas Majora's Mask felt more organic due to it's premise. MM held the tone the entire time, whereas TP only held that dark tone when the province was covered in darkness or when midna was hurt. It's dark in that it favors dark spoooky stuff like twilight and shades.
