yeah didn't care at all for the Ford guy... a walking commercial with a lack of decorum toward Sandy, who is a class act.
Cool truck, but to me it's like showing up with a great steam engine design; at this point its a "step in the right direction"...but the world has already leapt much further than this!

@@johntrout764 Rivian's trucks are starting at $70k. Even downsized and built at scale, I don't think Ford could bring the price point of an all-electric Maverick below $45k. The batteries as still just too expensive. That's just too much for the target demographic.
This is a solution that can nearly halve fuel emissions compared to the alternatives (at least in city driving: all the competing small pickups are ~20 mpg city). That's worth doing, even if this isn't the final form.

@ Philip Biron. Only if they have batteries to put in them. Per Ford they are production constrained to ~50k MachE due to battery availability. They are counting on SK Innovations to build their factory outside Atlanta GA. The total capacity being built is only for a few 100k vehicles and that factory is also suppling cells for VW’s ID4 production in Tennessee. The made an announcement of a new investment with SK but that 60 GWh is not scheduled to begin production until “mid-decade”
With the MachE, F150 Lightening, Lincoln & Ford mid-size crossovers (CDC746/747) all in production by 2023 there won’t be enough batteries to go around.
If they can easily sell everything they make they will focus on higher margin vehicles. A well equipped F150 Lightning (~$60k) will have much larger margins than a $30-35k BEV Maverick.
Don’t get me wrong I want one. I just understand the time table of global battery ramp so won’t expect to see a BEV Maverick before 2025.

And the money saved on gas in a few years makes up the difference! Not having a plug these days is just a major drawback. If nothing else, for future resale! Everything is going to have a plug in 5 years.. resale counts.. this is not future proofed at all. 40mpg is pure shit in 5 years.. but i get it.. the price point is huge.. and it’s decently designed for uses.. but really wish it was plug in capable

Thinking about how to make the bed more useful is great! I've drilled holes in beds to install tie downs that should have been provided and cobbled racks together. Ford has thought about how to make this stuff easy.
Two position tailgate - wonderful! "Back then" tailgates used to be supported by chains rather than wire cables. When hauling stuff we'd unhook and twist the chain in order to make it shorter and hold the tailgate in a 'half down' position. Ford reinvented what we did. Great utility and seems to solve the problem of holding sheet goods in an undersized bed (sedan with no trunk lid).

I think this is more likely than a BEV version. I could see them sticking with BEV or ICE only for the F150. Then have the Maverick get the choice of ICE, HEV & PHEV.
They also need to add more torque to the PHEV version. The current hybrid Maverick can’t be upgraded to the 4000 lbs. And 2000 lbs towing just isn’t enough.

    • @jonvanderwoude4682
      @jonvanderwoude4682 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Problem with a plugin hybrid version:
It'll probably get ~2 miles to the kwh with that profile, and a kwh costs ~13¢, call it 6.5¢/mile.
      It gets 40mpg, and at $2.60 a gallon that's 6.5¢ per mile.
If it costs the same to run on electricity as the motor, why bother? Chevy saw this with the volt that a number of people just never plugged it in.
I suspect they could do a PHEV real quick, (of they haven't done it already) but by but doing it this way they save battery manufacturing capacity for other vehicles, they keep the price down, and they have a shiny new PHEV drive train to sell you in a few years.
All that said, I'll probably wait for the PHEV version myself.

Price is the most important factor for most people. coming in at an actual 20K will make this a hit. If it is actually 20k AND you can get one for that. Dealers don't like to stock the cheap ones and then plan on upselling you to the one that is only 5K more.
