Modified Mepps Spinner - Secret Bass Bait for Kent Lake

    Today I release one of the most deadliest modified secret bass baits I've been using since the 1990s, long before Mepps ever decided to partner up with Mister Twister to release their single hooked spinner with a grub. This is still better, you can do this with Blue Fox or a Panther Martin as well, use any scented soft plastic bait imaginable, even a swimbait if you wanted to! Not many fishermen use a Mepps spinner like this for bass nor have the bass seen a lure like this at Kent Lake, it's not overused unlike the chatterbait.

    I really have to try those new Eagle Claw Trokar hooks, I lost a lot of fish and missed a lot of strikes I didn't show 15+. For some reason just get a lot of hits and misses, maybe I'll move up to a 4/0

      @@iancameron1662 I know I should, lol, I honestly think using knipex round pliers is easier without all the parts, but once you get on the hagens out, you can start cranking them out the spinners pretty fast, in perfect form too.

      I’ve used the Eagle Claw Trokar hooks before for texas rigs 3-4 years ago. They are super sharp but they do rust pretty easily and also bend easier than most of my Gamakatsu hooks.

    • @EternalAngler
      @EternalAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Arcasting1of course nothing is better than Gamakatsu, lol problem is I dont think Gamakatsu makes a hook that has that reverse plastic barb thingy on the main shank that will hold soft plastics in place. If you find a similar hook like that, send it to me pronto brotha, I had so many hits in misses, even lost a few fish when I had them on... you see when I land pike, hook pops right out. Lure catches a lot of fish, but still lot of hits and misses, still gotta fine tune it, I may need to try a 4/0 hook. It may have poor hook setting capability because it's jointed with the split ring, even without the split ring when I attach hook directly I remember I still had the same problem. You know me, I have a horrible hook set too. The bass are very lethargic at kent this time of year, for whatever reason, I remember wader fishing with northern mike and they were slamming the chatterbaits and fighting pretty good, may be just how the kent bass hit the mepps spinner compared to the chatterbait/jerkbait. Thanks for chiming in Ar, always appreciate your input!

    At first, I thought you were gonna fish from a hot air balloon, then a plane, a sailboat, then a rowboat. I was thinking not only do I not have a boat but I don’t have any of those things, I can only bank fish so I have a lot of catching up to do!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
    I’m not a huge fan or treble hooks , good video for modifying the mepps!! I’ve seen a couple versions without treble hooks. Thanks for the video.

    My two favorite bass baits are the "whopper plopper" and the "Mepps Spinner". As another youtuber mentioned, if they don't strike on the Mepps, they aren't going to strike anything. That is my experience too. Thanks for sharing.

    Found a spot in river in my town and finally found a great honey hole full of 4-8" smallmouths caught like 6in 3hrs after a heavy storm; like peak clear sits after torrential downpour water was high and fast and full of goodies for the hungry fish who were active from the temperature changes. Was an amazing day and my first time succeeding with a spin er and it was a black fury; but I'm definitely trying this!

      @@EternalAngler hi there! Thanks for the like and comment! I got a Mepps AC hybrid single hook with false egg on the hook, yellow and brass with black painted eyes (3 eyes) for the pattern and the fake egg is yellow and I trimmed a white grub slipped that on and caught my PB Smallmouth in about 3-5 casts! Still had more action on the black fury, but I got some snapback spinners and some are yellow and black and I am gonna make my own single hook custom lures; one I did with black and yellow spinner and beads with a mepps rubber Minnow trailing it; really excited for that one; and also made a double spinner with multiple eggs on it and a white grub with single hook. Super excited for my next trip and thanks for your awesome video 🙌😆💯

      26:34 Yeah I mentioned that here, it's called the Comet Combo. Their hook keeper is crappy on the Comet Combo, the hook keeper I use by Eagle Claw is better and will keep the worm on longer once it gets worn out after catching numerous bass. And you're very limited on very few color blades with the Comet Combo, you can take any Mepps spinner that is single, double bladed, even a weighted one like this one here 11:08 and attach any soft plastic bait to it with this modification hack. I also emphasized how you can do this to Panther Martin or Blue Fox that has their unique patented bell/grinder. And as I told the story 5:24, I did this way back in the 1990s well before the Comet Combo was out.

    Biggest thing I dislike about Mepps is you can't get any casting distance with them. Please don't recommend lighter line either I've already done that too with 7 foot rods and they travel nowhere especially in the wind. They catch bass, but I want to be able to cover water and you can't with these things. Oh and they feel like logs when you pull them in too.

    • @EternalAngler

      Strip one bead off the main shaft of the the wire with pliers and add a split shot, Ive done this with larger musky bucktails, they also have weights like small egg sinkers or rubber core that slide right on too the wire that aren't split shots. On my old channel I made a video of me modifying a spanky bucktail and doing this. But yes, you're right, they are a little too light for my taste at times and aren't made for big water like Lake St. Clair, but rather shallow rivers, inland lakes and ponds like kent.

      Braid like power pro and their version super slick makes everything cast further if you aren't using it already, buy a 7 foot rod and use like 15 lb power pro you should get out pretty far, versus a standard 6 foot bass rod and 10 lb mono, the casting distance should be night and day with 15 lb power pro and a 7 foot stiff bass rod. I mean I know esox are attracted to inline spinners, so I do 20 lb power pro to 40 lb fluoro at kent. I ditched mono and fluorocarbon a long time ago as my main like due to memory and line twists, braid in general works better with inline spinners due to the line twist problem! My one friend used to use stren easy cast back in the day for mono, not sure if they make that anymore though... Hope this helps!

    Why are you trying to dismantle and make a hack for a lure that has been tried and true for 40 years from Mepps? Then you damage it? By the way: Mepps already makes in line spinner with a ewg hook?

    • @EternalAngler
      @EternalAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because you're adding in more aciton, scent, texture, and color to a hard bait that is rather just boring, a soft plastic bait can add more attraction just like a soft plastic trailer can add more attraciton to a chatterbait. Yes, chatterbait works great as is, so does a skirted jig... This is why fishermen add soft plastic trailers to them, you add more Your bringing out more characteristics of the bass when they're hunting or even when they're not hunting and have lock jaw. As I told the one story of my child hood, I had a friend that always crushed me bass fishing, but when I made this mepps hybrid bait up, I couldn't keep the bass off my bait, and he wasn't catching anything. To this day, that experience has stuck with me up until my 40s, I'm 39 now. Do your own experiments and you might come to a similar conclusion, you can make a bait that's already deadly, a lot deadlier! Be sure to watch my video where I made a recent chatterbait tube.... th-cam.com/video/sBSPSFxiJzE/w-d-xo.html
