Great tip, Matt! You're giving out great secret tips lately. An inline spinner always gets my attention. I do the same to repurpose those and even buy new ones to alter. Last year I bought some Blue Fox Super Vibrax inline spinners (#3 to #5) to use as upfront weights/spinners for worm harnesses to walleye fish out in Lake Erie. When the water is dirty, it's like ringing a dinner bell for the fish. For some reason, I've learned that the longer French spinner blade works better early in the season. Great content, as always!
I live in Florida and have seen a few different versions of this modification - we were trying to keep it on the down low. Sally’s have always been popular but we don’t like the one you show in this video- we prefer what we call “ The North Alabama Sally”. It doesn’t have the beads but a single weight so it comes through vegetation a lot better. People don’t realize how popular Sally’s were in mid to north Alabama. They make a EXCELLENT inline spinner bait you can buy around the Cullman area called a “Weeping Willow “. I remember one tournament back in the 90’s on Pickwick where Jamie Horton and myself watched a older gentleman wear us out throwing a Sally. I’ve never left mine home since that day.
This is why I'm a fan of your channel. Reinventing old ideas to meet current needs. Long story short; in-lines, spoons, and poppers have been successful for many years. Make them a little better with modern plastics and hardware, and what's Rick Flair say..."WHOOO"!
Thanks for sharing Matt.Dont forget a small swivel on that to prevent line twist .I use a split ring attached to barrel swivel right to the lure .I also go with that on my topwater whopper ploppers which also cause a lot of line twist.Good luck down there.
First! I love my Mepps spinners more than any other lure. That looks like a better version of the Comet Combo. You have outdone yourself! I have 5 Black Furys and an Agila this needs to be done on ASAP!
This is absolutely stunning. We fish a lot of grass and cover in our dams here in South Africa and this onnovation will work brilliantly. One of the very best videos i have seen!!
I have done this and used the Mister Twister worm hooks that have the barbed spike that holds the bait on. I’ve used them on big #5s with tubes, swim baits, and grubs for northern, largemouth, and smallies in thick cover. Just incredible.
Thank you for the tips. Spinner fishin is my favorite way to fish. I use to throw Bronze Slammers but I've switched to 5/16 Arctic Spinners. I know everyone says they have the best lure but this isn't even my lure. I caught 315 smallies in 1 day on!!! It's the best spinner on the market! Kevin Van Damme's family copied it exactly and are also selling it at their tackle store in Kalamazoo Mi.
Hey Matt great modification, looks like a winner for sure around any cover. With the added flash it should work great with an exposed hook in open water with any type of plastic bait. Thank again
That’s a super cool innovation! I was raised a trout fisherman in the crystal clear streams and lakes of the far northern Sierra Nevada Mts. The first bass I ever caught was in 1976 on a #2 Mepps Comet that comes with the little trout looking swimbait on the treble! I started bass fishing with it in the silver and did great but due to that treble, I had to keep it just outside the weed line where the bass would ambush it. This creation of yours would kill it in the tules. Now I’ve got to pull out all my trout spinners and get to work. 😃👍🏼👍🏼
I love spinners so much that I bought a wire bender. I bought the Dubro bucktail version for pike and musky bucktails but there are many reasonably priced benders out there. You can even get a pair of round-nose pliers to start the loop and finish twisting it around a nail. Jann's Netcraft has some cheaper benders but I think they're limited to wire under 0.040".
I was doing some field testing for Mepp's in the early 1970s. I cut the treble from a #4 Comet, replaced it with a straight shank hook, then texas-rigged a 3 inch grub making the spinner snag-less. The fledgling Maryland Bass Federation printed and article I wrote about it which I sent to Mepp's. The very next year Mepp's sold a lure using my concept, however, their lure featured the brand new worm hook that had a barbed wire extending from the hook eye. The grub head was threaded on the wire enabling it to be texas-rigged. Like you, I still use Mepp's and Snagless Sally lures. I remove the hooks, replace them with a keel weighted swim bait hook and a paddle tail swim bait. What do they say about "great minds"?
Yes that's a great idea and I'm sure will work well at the big O. When you are on stage with the check and trophy make sure you share that winning bait. The tackle tinkerer strikes again with a winner!!!
This is a great modification and I have done a similar thing with these in line spinners! I bet on the #5 spinner with this setup would be great for Pike!! Thank Matt for sharing this with us! :)
Great idea you have there Matt. I'm going to have to make a couple of them up for the upper bay on the flats in Maryland this year. Can't wait to see what happens.
Exactly what I did, just about a month ago. Haven't been able to throw it, yet, but I'm confident that it'll do well. Side Note: The Bronze Slammer really isn't anything new by Mepps. They have been essentially been selling these for years, as just an inline spinner. I couldn't find any Slammers, locally, but immediately recognized it at a Dick's Sporting Goods store, as just a general inline spinner. At best, they changed some of the coloring on the blade. So, really, It's just a remarketing.
Years ago In Fisherman magazine had a technique like this using Erie Dearies, replacing the hook and then using a live minnow threaded on the hook. It worked in cover.and believe it or not more open water. This is better with the Fusion hook and plastics. May rig up some of my old Erie Dearies with this hook and plastics. Thanks for the tip.
Here’s a tip for you. That bait would be a killer for Redfish. The chartreuse Snagless Sally is a bait I used 30 years ago and smashed them on it. Goes through Oyster bars well. Great tip and thanks for a memory from old times. Keep up the great work bud!!
I make my own inline spinners. Been doing it since the early 00s. a yamamoto double tail hula grub as a trailer is dynamite. You can Fish em through thick pads too. Man you are spilling all the juice here. These baits are slept on. Not many people I know who fish them
I make so many baits and keep all the components off all my old lures to reuse, after watching your video on the Queen's tackle weedless spinnerbait I made my own, I also made an awesome inline buzzbait can't wait to give it a go!
I'm a huge fan of inline spinners especially for trout fishing up here. this is a awesome awesome idea that I can not wait to try out on bass. thanks again for another awesome video and best of luck in Florida. I'll be watching ya on bass live.
Consider using a keel weighted swim bait hook without the inline spinner weighted body. This should conceivable eliminate line twist. May still need some spacer to keep the blade free from the nose of the bait. Great content as always. Thank you Matt.
As a teenager in the 80's i had a lure made by mister twister , very much this idea.the weighted part unscrewed and you hooked on the soft plastic under a skirt.was a killer in the tannic waters we fished. Greetings from South Africa
So the key hack on both of those baits is replacing the treble with the swimbait hook? Powerbait also makes a little higher end swimbait that comes in dift forage...bluegill perch etc with eyes. The name escapes me but they are pretty firm. Maybe overkill fishing thru slop and the grass pig is cheaper. Just a thought. I have a bunch. I'm excited about this one. My premium payment got declined but I'll fix it tonight. Thx Matt!
Great idea Matt! Mepps also makes something similar right out of the package - called either the Mepps Weedless Combo Killer or Mepps Comet Combo. However, they are not offered in heavier sizes (1/3 oz max).
I made some of these from scratch after seeing the Sally in store. Mepp's makes a ready to go version too although smaller (and not weedless). Killer baits 👍🏻
That is genius! I have a ton of old rooster tails and Mepp's spinners that are just lying around. That gives me a big idea! If it works, I'll let you know!
I've built many of those, even double bladed. Last built was a Rapala Elite CD with a metallic lip....before that a Yo-Zuri Bean with a ball weight at bottom...the weight is to keep the Bean from blowing out....and a swing jig/chatter with direct blade to swing jighead (no split ring in between).
TW has the Bronze Slammer in 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2 weights but doesn’t list blade size. So, you mentioned a 3 and a 5 sized blade. Which weights are those? Can’t wait to try this on a Gambler EZ swimmer-my fav bait for running along weed lanes. With this set-up, looks like I can drop it right into and through the weeds and get even closer to the biguns. Great stuff as always, Matt! (And good on ya to give mention to RI skinny dipper, another fav of mine for these kinds of applications.)
I like it. I made up a spinner almost exactly like that on the St. John’s a few years ago. Had a machete blade by luhr Jensen. Gambler makes a spinner bait with smaller blade versions. Long story short. Outgoing small feeder creek. Tossed in the mouth there and got hooked decent with a giant. Ole head shake got me again. I did realize though why they put a treble hook on the original. Smaller version like yours will prob work great for numbers I would think.
Like it, I know most spinners use a Indiana type blade,I make my own spinners and use the Colorado blade if I want to keep lure running high,I'm going to use your modification and make some different sizes to match the size of the swimbaits
Great video, Matt. I build baits like that myself for years for myself using French blades and pair them with a swimbait. They are awesome baits indeed. Not only bass love 'em. Pike are all over them too. Haven't tried a big version for Musky yet, but I'm sure that would be a bringer too.
Terminator used to make an inline spinner rig that you could attach different hooks to. I have been using it for years with paddle tail swimbaits. It is a killer.
Don't forget in-line buzz baits up top. You may have to make your own now days. A light keel weighted hook may help resist twist? Your thoughts? Is it worth, does the blade introduce enough torque to spin the bait or no advantage? All the best
I have made inlines and experimented with similar setups. As mentioned, Mepps does make a similar lure with a grub and more recently with a EWG style hook. I do get frustrated with the way some bass bite all 3 hooks and some slash at the bait, somehow missing the hooks all together.
Great tip Matt. I will be curious how you do fishing it in Florida. I will check out my old mepps spinnerbaits from my Canada trip and try them out as you suggested. I grew up throwing mepps spinnerbaits over 45 years ago in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois 😉
Great vid as always ! I thought I was the only one that made those lol. I started about 3 years ago when I was trying to find away to make some weedless lures that would catch fish and these definitely catch fish! Hope you have a great time down I. Florida. Let us know how these work for you down there!
Love the value and new look creation for pressured water. For me it seems anything not perfectly symmetrical results in nasty line twists. Are you fishing them on a bait caster?
Ive always cut the hooks off, put a snap ring and an ewg with or without screw lock and did the same thing for the last 10+ yrs..i must have 1000s of. Mepps agular inline spinners etc. They catch every type of fish. Matt this is definitely a deadly technique you let the cat out the bag with this one
Awesome as always! I ran right to all my old spinners and made one but the split ring was too big for the hook to move freely, what size split ring did you use?
We started doing that with the old purple card meps as you could change out the hooks on those. Then they stopped making them that way. I think because every once in a while a northern would get the body to ride up and unlatch the hook. I personally prefer a ewg hook over a spring lock type. Seems like I have fewer problems with the bait snagging on vegetation.
Excellent tip. I have considered this in the past, but I have not yet made any. I still have a couple of Snagless Sallies and some of the old Terminator Redfish inline weedless spinners. How do you feel this inline weedless spinner compares to something like the Owner Flashy Swimmer? Does having the spinner in front vs. being a weedless underspin make a significant difference in fishability or catch rate?
@Matt Stefan Fishing Thank you for the fast reply. I will keep your experience in mind this year when the hydrilla recovers from winter. There are a few places where I can try these in the pads as well. Thanks again and I truly enjoy your channel!
This is the greatest modification I have ever ever seen in fishing! Matt you are the best!
haha! thanks for the support!
Agree, this is a really solid bait mod, combination, reuse. Kudos!

Thanks Matt great info as always..
thanks!
This makes a great bank fishing video as well. Bank fishing is like playing a 1970's pinball machine with short flippers.
haha!
Another great tip Matt. This works great with weighted swimbait hooks too. You can really dial in your speed and depth.
yep i forgot to mention the weighted swimbait hooks

Awesome video!!! Thanks for the tips on modifying the in-line spinner. Have a few lakes around me that are weedy!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!

its fun making spinnerbaits and inline!
I would have thought that the swimbait would spin around on such a rig, Matt? And doesn’t Mepps / Mr Twister already have a longtime version of that?
You should use a walleye spinner rig and a EWG and basically create a weighted spinner rig for swimbaits and swimming worms. Maybe even brush-hogs.
Nice!
I live and fish in Wisconsin and fish quite a few weedy lakes, this is an awesome tip and may have to make one or two for this coming season.
Glad it was helpful!

Matt, You took me way back when you mentioned the Snagless Sally. Thanks.
awesome!

Thanks for this idea Matt. Great idea. I will try when the ice disappears.
come on spring!
I used a Snagless Sally on Okeechobee modified like that years ago, and you right stayed hung up too much to fish it. I will try the Mepps next time.

Very good information and tips on your video thanks and good luck with your first tournament and good fishing 🎣

been doing that since the 70s they work awesome. try putting on a twistertail on it

Great video, Matt. I build baits like that myself for years for myself using French blades and pair them with a swimbait. They are awesome baits indeed. Not only bass love 'em. Pike are all over them too. Haven't tried a big version for Musky yet, but I'm sure that would be a bringer too.
awesome!

I just maybe one of those I can't wait to try it out thank you for teaching me how to build one in those
works great!
Mepps use to make something very similar.think it was called a killer.👍👍👍👍👍
interesting!

Love the value and new look creation for pressured water. For me it seems anything not perfectly symmetrical results in nasty line twists. Are you fishing them on a bait caster?

Very interesting. I have enough parts to try this out down in IL. How does it behave differently from an underspin?
its very different than an underspin
Mind blown! 🤯 I’ll be trying this one once the tules get green again in my area
go for it!
Hey Matt, do you use a swivel? I fish big Rooster Tailsa for smallies often but get a lot of line twist unless I use a swivel. Thanks!
Yes I do!
Thanks Matt
thanks for watching!
What colors do you recommend for bronze slammer/grass pig combo? Gonna grab a few to try running through the thick stuff at Sam Rayburn this spring
i like the chartresue and white and blue/white
Love the mods Thanks Matt
You bet!
Thanks for the awesome advice I'm definitely going to have to try this out. By the way have you tried the Picasso all-terrain inline spinner?
Not yet!
Cool hack! Definitely gonna try that!
awesome!
Excellent tip. I have considered this in the past, but I have not yet made any. I still have a couple of Snagless Sallies and some of the old Terminator Redfish inline weedless spinners. How do you feel this inline weedless spinner compares to something like the Owner Flashy Swimmer? Does having the spinner in front vs. being a weedless underspin make a significant difference in fishability or catch rate?
completely different honestly
@Matt Stefan Fishing Thank you for the fast reply. I will keep your experience in mind this year when the hydrilla recovers from winter. There are a few places where I can try these in the pads as well. Thanks again and I truly enjoy your channel!
My son has great success with spinners, but all I seem to do is get snagged on rocks. So this tip might help me out. Thanks.
awesome!
I will definitely be trying this if I ever have an in-line spinner that doesn’t get snagged.
sounds good
I like this idea
How does the mod perform in WI? I would think bass and pike would crush that thing. Love Mepps spinners, been using them since I was a kid.
awesome!
@@MattStefanFishing looks like I'll be upgrading a couple of my old mepps buck tails this Spring. Thanks Matt. 😀
Beefed up mepps comet👍🏼
yep!
