Thanks for uploading this. It's my favourite Olympic moment. From memory, it was a Saturday morning in Australia and I was home alone while my dad was at work, and my mum and sisters were doing the weekly shopping. Everyone expected Gross to win..... I had never even heard of Jon Sieben. Unbelievable swim. I was jumping around the house celebrating but I had no one to celebrate with. 😂 I couldn't wait to tell someone. His coach Laurie Lawrence was a character. Cheers

I was exactly the same age, 17 and my parents had just left the house to go shopping or something because there was no chance he could win. As it turned out Sieben came from the clouds to win from absolutely nowhere. I remember running outside jumping over the birdbath because my parents were still in the driveway. I told them that Australia had won gold. They stopped, came inside and we all rejoiced. The Sieben name has been burned into my psychology ever since and still to this day. A win for the ages and I’m nearly 53 now. I still have no idea how he did it?

Currently watching the Aussie swim team clean up at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Just had to watch this again - the GREATEST swim final finish in Olympic history! Go Australia and thank you forever John Sieben 🇦🇺! This race will NEVER be forgotten!
It was quite a shocking result. Gross didn’t swim poorly, Sieben swam the race of his life and beat him. Sieben had some nice results later but never reached these heights again.
the most interesting thing about this race is jon sieben. You have to remember is was only small 5 8 or 5 9 and grosse was like 6 6 or something. But most interesting is jon siebens style is really the same as modern day leclos. It looks slightly different but it pretty much the same you can see it. Hes swimming two beautiful kicks per arm stroke and realy working the back end of the pull and core like the modern days phelps. So siebens technique was way ahead of his time because most people back then used more arm than body dolphin and core like sieben did. So congrats to his coach.
Laurie Lawrence was his coach. In terms of being able to motivate people and make them believe in themselves he's one of the great Australian coaches in all sports.

A lot of parallels with Le Clos's upset of Phelps in the same event in London 2012. Similar style, and outcome. But Gross much more generous in his congratulations, it must be said.
I remember this race...but never paid attention to Sieben until the final 15 meters. It's great to be able to watch the whole race and analyze it. He was dead last at the 100 with lanes 7 and 8 and coming off the wall looked dead. Somewhere around the 120 mark he seemed to switch gears and never let up. I don't know how he can swim so fast breathing every stroke; especially out of turns. I was hoping to be in that race but was forced to retire in '82.
"How 'about that, Jim?" Is American code for, "WTF just happened?!" At least at the intro the commentator had the good sense to say, "Never count out an Australian swimmer." How 'bout that, Jim ... Indeed.

Я помню Президента Рузвельта и его жени и дети присутствовали и он готовился стать еще президентом второй раз и первий раз он очень будучи президентом рассмеялся , моя мама помнила его молодим по фильму что она смотрела в детстве в Париже Франция.

Amazing last 50! no one had ever broken 30 secs in the last 50……..he did it in 29.1
Yeh, I thought it was the wrong video. No way could he win from that far back. But he did and even broke the world record.
