    I remember one of the other videos argued that regular cds won't work. They said it required writable dvds because those contain silicon. The regular cds and DVDs that aren't purple, are plastic mass replicated products which are pressed, not burned. Silicon was argued to be the "game changer"

    • @markwarburton8563
      @markwarburton8563 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The blue/purple colour is from azo or cyanine-type dyes. Neither of those dyes has silicon!

    • @timhartherz5652
      @timhartherz5652 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I worked at a company which build the machines to manufacture CD's/DVD's neither the ordinary nor write/rewritable ones contain silicone.
      They use a thin layer of metal which is been sputtered on as a reflective layer as well as a light-sensitive dye for the (re)writeable ones.
      We experimeted with all kinds of metals for the reflective layer though, copper gold platinum you name it we tried it, silicone was none of them though.
      But Aluminium was the best cost/reflectivness compromise.

    About cd .. .. If you have a CD player and do no longer need it, you can take out the ejection system. Thing is: if you put an LED (or two in reverse) on the motor and operate the eject mechanism (open, close, open, close), the leds will light up. And yes, there is another motor in the middle, but you will need to spin it a bit faster. The nice thing of the eject system is that it has gearing in it (See Rob's previous video about making your own, 1 to 128 ration).
    The CDrom can be used to create a capacitor, not very spectacular.
    The best use I know of for a CD is in the garden, hanging (dangling) from a rope, to scare birds away.

      @@scotttovey Yes :D I'm currently studying if it might be possible to make portable AM rectenna to power 1,5v FM / Mp3 player... Biggest issue seems to be sourcing genuine low voltage UHF/VHF/RF diodes for cheap. Those good old germanium ones are nearly 1€ a peace + shipping. The CD actually might work well and be better with "spider coil" configuration. But I'm also going to use some LC magic, so I will try some dark green or dark grey (Mn-Zn) toroids to get more power.

If it helps, I wasn't looking for a video on DIY solar cells, but google just found it relevant to me (no idea why, it's been 10+ years since I search for anything like Overunity / Free Energy etc). I have never seen any of the videos that promoted this fallacy so your video must be gaining some traction with the funcy (or funky) youtube algorithm. Congratulations: At the time of this comment, this may not have millions of views but 1/4 million views still isn't bad. Hope more people see this before wasting time and patience on garbage. It's amazing how many suckers are out there.
    You can use clear lens LED's in this configuration and read a small voltage but it would take literally millions of them to make any usable power.
    They incorporate non--reversing diodes in REAL solar panels to keep storage battery power from from backing up into the panels at night discharging them. If this happens, the solar panel will emit light in the infrared spectrum. LED's work basically the same way but with visible light.

    In the one I watched, the guy twisted many wire ends together but forgot to hide that he hadn't removed wire insulation.
    Bare footed in a lush marshy field he risked electrocution from the kilo-volts output from those connected100 cd's.

    Not condoning posting fake videos, but a little good does comes of it: People that don't know better, or should, do get some experience constructing something and testing it. There are worse things in the world. It will fail. But we do learn more from our failures than our successes.
    At around 12-years-old, a friend and I got hold of a couple of Big Wheel tire and axle sets. We built a crude unpowered go-cart chassis for them. We had measured the width of the axles from the outside of each tire, not the inside. The axles would not fit the finished chassis. Doh!
    Much was learned, though: Experience, new skills, and life lessons.

    I actually made one solar CD wrapped wire myself, just to try it. In the sun, it did produce about 3 volts, but not enough amps to speak of...it has to be in direct sunlight, or it won't work. It works, but not feasible due to it having little power output.

    I love the old video where you cut the top off an old car battery and hundreds of dry cell batteries fall out. I laugh when I think of some poor sap getting battery acid all over to discover there were no batteries inside. Then cleaning up the mess.

    Simple solar cell can be built using copper cladboard .

  • @bobbear

    During the 1980's the US Army conducted tests on various sheets of metal, like steel, aluminum, copper, etc., connected a bit like metal roofing. Some did conduct electricity, but not as reliably as the regular solar panels. All a CD can do is act as a reflector, not a conductor such as a hard drive metal disc, which I have tried and with disappointing results.

    I wonder if you can build one of those solar heating panels that people make with hoses in spiral shape, but use CDs at the base painted with black paint, so that it absorbs light but also the light that goes through the paint gets reflects by the CD back into the paint, allowing for higher effeciency.

    • @jerrypayne9617
      @jerrypayne9617 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those do work as a per-heater for your water heater. Or for a off grid cabin. but in the winter these don't work quite as well in less the box is well made.

    By wrapping wire around the CDs and sticking them in the air you will pick up radio frequency energy and if you run it through a diode you will see small amounts of voltage, a long way from a solar cell however.

    It is an interesting concept, shame it doesn’t work. I have seen so many videos and thought to myself it couldn’t possibly work. Electronics are an amazing thing and I think it’s great that people waste their time to learn something doesn’t work, that inspires the brain to find a method that does work.

    It can be used like any little mirror to reflect sunlight on a black pipe filled with water to warm it, for example. If you have enough of them arranged well and the sun shines bright at the right angle, you may be able to boil a pot of water with it ;)
