    Creating a Cracked Skin Effect
    In this episode we finish adding a cracked skin effect to a photo, making it look more three-dimensional and adding blur. Be sure to check out Part 1 where you will learn how to wrap the texture around a subject's face.
    How to Give the Cracks Dimension
    To apply the cracks in the first part of this tutorial we used the Multiply blend mode, making the darks interact with the photo and the lights invisible. Now we want to add highlights on the edges of the cracks to give them more dimension. We do this by duplicating the original crack layer, inverting and desaturating it, and changing the blend mode to Screen. Now we have have white cracks on a transparent background. Next we use Blend If to make this layer invisible where the underlying layer is darker, removing it from the cracks. This section of the tutorial is pretty complex but will make a huge difference in the final effect. Next step is to move this layer so it matches the lighting on the original photo.
    Create a Peeling Effect on the Cracks
    Next step is to make the skin look like it is peeling up in some places just as paint would. To do this we use a soft edged brush, painting white on a Soft Light layer. Painting around the cracks and the using the lasso tool to remove the highlights from unwanted areas makes the skin look as thought it is peeling up. After creating the highlights we do the same thing with the shadows, painting black on a soft light layer. In this tutorial we cover a small part of the image because of time restrictions.
    Add a Blur to Blend into the Image
    The original image was photographed using a shallow depth of field meaning that some of the face is in focus and some of the face is out of focus. To complete our cracked skin effect we have to duplicate this gradual blur. To match the blur we use the Blur Tool on a new layer. Be sure to check the option "Sample All Layers" and set your strength to about 50%. This will allow you to add the blur on a new blank layer, not effecting the layers underneath.

    If you want to blur only the effect the not the subject than put the two groups in a separate group and convert it to smart object. then apply the gausian blur from the filter menu and paint black on the filter mask with a soft brush. BTW great tips here thanks Aaron

    For that last step in blurring, couldn't you just hide the background image then Command+Option+Shift+E to a new layer then use Gaussian Blur, then use a black mask and paint white to blur the parts you wanted blurred? That's how I might have done it and I kinda expected you to do that also but using the blur tool was pretty smart and used less steps... Good job again... great tutorial...

    you know what i hate in photoshop, is around 3:20, when you duplicate a layer and then all the clipping masks that were of the duplicated layer are no longer clipped.
    is there a work around for this? i mean I suppose you can just duplicate all the clipping masks as well, but it seems like photoshop shouldn't un-clip clipped masks, it's sooooooo annoying

  • @123jozef
    @123jozef 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Learn how to make selections.... perfectly, learn the importance of layers... and use layer masks. Travel as the Crow flies. Use as many layers needed, learn to group them and name them... and then take on the attitude of "what the mind can conceive, Photoshop can achieve". That means; If you can envision it, you should be able to duplicate your vision. This is how miraculous Photoshop can be. There are fantastic tutorials on the old "Worth1000" site.... and many more. People always ask "How long will it take me to be good?" ... well, since Photoshop has no limitations, you can spend a lifetime getting better every day. Right? Right.

  • @123jozef
    @123jozef 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ha ha... you said it down there. This tutorial is NOT for beginners. These are advanced Photoshop techniques.. this stuff is waaaay beyond beginners level. I dont know how you would keep up even if you paused and rewound the video, you won't understand the concepts until you have some serious time under your belt. Also, a very important fact beginners "There are a million ways to skin a cat" in other words, watch the video, pick up on WHAT he is doing and not so much HOW he is doing it. I have been doing this for years. Then end product is the same or better, and I go about it completely different. There are some people on here that are so good that they can actually do what he does in reverse. Pick up on the concepts of dimensions, depth and color and shading. Worry about the 'how" later. One good point he continues to make "make it look real" and "dont make it look flat"

      Dude there's no such a thing as ''made for beginners, or for Advanced users''. The only thing needed to do such a thing like this tutorial, is knowing the program's tools, and discovering how to use them, how do you do this? Through memorization, and after you memorize, you do things your own way. Simple as that

  • @Nelepl
    @Nelepl 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really awesome video as always but there is something that really bothers me when watching them. Your unnecessary subconscious moving things around like layer palette or picture inside photoshop window is annoying as fuck when you trying to watch it. I don't mean when you are trying to brush so you need to move the picture around to get to the other area but when you are doing nothing but talking and still moving things around for no particular reason. It's something similar like PC user being addicted to refresh button. I'd say if you want to make your videos be more pleasing to watch please stop doing this.
