    These look really useful when you need to plug into a soundboard (like at events to connect to a PA system), usually you'd need something with XLR built in like the canon c100/200/300 or Sony fs5/7 etc.
    One thing I did notice watching your video the Sony has the option to plug in the larger jack mount into the XLR plugs, WHICH is super useful because at events with mixers often the XLR outputs they use get used up and there's only jack outputs left for me to use with a camera. You can get adapters but in a rush to be able to ask a sound guy for a feed and plug in either input is very useful.

    For 600USD you can get a 32bit audio recorder that's also a desktop interface has duel audio recording and run a line to the camera and one click sync in post.
    On the other hand, you get a 24bit (or is it 16) recorder unit that costs 100-200 less is limited to sony and no preroll.
    MixPre 3-II wins here.
    But personally id get both.

    If you need a strong version of this, then XLR-K1M is the strongest of the lot. That is more or less a version of the detachable handle of the NX70 professional camcorder which was the professional version of the HDR-CX700 handycam. It was originally made for the VG30. It is solid but the K2M was launched which is very plastic but much lighter for mirrorless cameras. Now the K3M with some extra features and an extension cable which effectively resurrects the flexibility of the K1M with the compactness of the K2M. With regards to the K3M, I wonder why Sony didn't also include a headphone jack for all of those mirrorless cameras that support these accessories but stupidly don't have a headphone jack. If you care enough about audio to be using a professional XLR input, then you will most definitely want to be monitoring that audio with headphones.

    Recording to MixPre is worth the effort. Recording to a dedicated external recorder especially to ones as good as the SoundDevices MixPre always allows for better sound.

    Totally impressed. To be honest I've been looking for the solution to set up audio recording for interviews & documentaries which would be really compact (travelling), no post production, high quality and will also allow to record 3-4 people at once! I've been watching videos for 3 days straight and it became really confusing: wireless lav set ups, wired lavs, mixers and so on. I almost gave up and sought out to get just 4 of Taskam dr-10l (which is expensive) - but that's not only 4 batteris but also a syncing in post would be just a pain in the... since a project is travel-based. But now I've found your video and man I'm excited. Seems this is the best set-up for Sony a6600. Now I can just get a shotgun audio-technica and 3 lav mics. No synching, no batteries, no external mixers and stuff! Only gonna get zoom h1 for a backup sound and that's it. Awesome, thank you!

    I was planning on getting the Sony a6600. I see the Fuji XT4 and a lot of people saying Fuji is a better all around camera. I'm new to all of this and leaning. I need a good camera for my TH-cam channel and for taking nice photos and creating short videos as well. So still leaning about these powerful cameras and devices and accessories. Peace and love

    While the KM3 is great, especially when tightly integrated in the handle of the FX3, the MixPre II is worlds apart regarding capabilities. I know you know this but from this comparison peps could have the impression that the MixPre II uses some form of Limiter to protect audio from clipping. Which of course it has for 24bit audio. But the big thing is 32bit float, which is a lifesaver if you record anything critical and unique. And there are tons of other things that make the MixPre II an outstanding audio recorder.

    How does the ECM-B1m compare to the XLR-K3M?

    • @andrewjones-productions
      @andrewjones-productions 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be honest, you should be comparing microphones not the interface. Comparing this module with a microphone is not really worth your effort. With the K3M you have the ability to connect any XLR microphone from the cheap (but reasonably good SONY ECM-XM1) one included with this set and many other Sony professional camcorders to very high end microphones of all shapes and sizes. The ECM-B1M gives you a compact and convenient microphone and that is the key point. Microphones should always, always, ALWAYS be close to the source of the audio to sound the best. So if you are going to be a distance from your camera, then a shotgun mic mounted on the camera is not going to sound that wonderful and so you should be looking at some kind of wireless system or a long XLR cable to extend the distance and bring the mic in closer.

    Amazing that it has a quarter inch jack in compared to Panasonic competitor, but it really lacks a high-z (instrumental) input to plug in a guitar. With it it is almost a good audio interface for streams though it doesn't have a PC playback when connected with a capture card to a PC, but now companies add a webcam functionality via usb that may solve this. Other problem is monitoring on, say, sony a6400 as it has no headphone jack.

    I guess I'll get the Sony FX3 (since it's $200 cheaper than getting an A7S III + K3M). I want to do 2-camera videos. I've been waiting for Sony to make an APS-C camera with 10-bit color. But I'm tired of waiting. I don't want to make my workflow more complicated, so I guess that means I'm getting another Ninja V and two AtomX Sync thingies. That's $4,795 on my B&H card - before I even eBay a full-frame lens! And I blame you.

    Can't find an answer anywhere to this: if I'm using an A7iii, am I right to think that the K2M offers essentially the same features as the K3M? I understand the K3M comes with a slightly upgraded shotgun mic, but if I can pick up a K2M and a rode shotgun for the same price as the K3M, is that a better option for earlier Alpha models not compatible with digital audio recording?

    You are by far and away my favorite channel on TH-cam. Now, in that context, read this.
    Congratulations. You have officially gotten too big for your britches. This device should be so low on the list of most of the people that watch your channel, that it shouldn't even get a second thought until they reach 100k+ subscribers. Even then and oftentimes, an quality external recorder is a much better long-term investment for almost any content creator, especially given that this device's obsolescence is controlled totally by its manufacturer.
    If they need anything, get a DR-40X and put a nice payment forward on a Sigma prime. Yes please.
    I'm sure it's a very meritorious device, but do most people need it? No. Not at all.

    What I'd like to know is if there is a difference between the analog and the digital output of this device. The A6600 only accepts the analog signal - what a mistake from Sony.
    As I understand correctly, external recorders can record in a 24bit codec, which gives you a lot of headroom in post processing, instead of 16bit in camera.
    However, it's a very nice device. Would love to see xlr inputs in dslm cameras, though.

    Excellent review/test! You get my like & subscribe. So many camera channels seem to get lost in the amount of megapixels, slow motion, bitrates and color depths.... They've come to the point where they don't even talk about audio anymore, let alone test it. And if they do 'test' it, they seem to always find a way to make it as useless as possible... And then there's this clip which not only tests it in a meaningful way, but compares it to one of the best audio recorders on the planet too for reference. Did you do any noise reduction on these clips by the way? Oh and there's one little thing... if you want us to hear for ourselves how clean the unit sounds, don't forget to stop talking for a second too eh ;) Cheers!

      @@TheEverydayDad I am going to have to upgrade my setup. That audio sounds so so clean. Thanks for the video and info. Hope the Panasonic one is just as good as the Sony one.

    Can it record stereo audio inside a concert room. I have a canon dm 100 which work as either shotgun, stereo 90 or 120 . What is the equivalent?

    I use the A6600 and even with the wire extender, because the screen flips up and not to the side, the screen is still blocked.
    :(

      If you use it with an A6600 does it still talk to the K3M just analog or do you have to connect it to the camera's mic input through 3.5mm?

      Too be honest I don't know. I decided to buy the Sarmonic Blink 500 B2 system and it works great. Super light and really good sound quality.

    Which camera under $1,000 do you recommend for 4k videos? I create car reviews for my channel and I need to upgrade. I currently use my iPhone 📲 to shoot all my videos.

      Maybe the A6400, you can get it and the kit lens for under $1000.

    Hello! What device do you recommend me to be able to place this wonder without removing the monitor? (I would like to see myself while I record myself) Sony a6600

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need another way to mount the monitor as this goes in the hotshoe. I'd assume some kind of cage could do both.
