    So freaking underrated. Literally recorded my video yesterday with the EV-RE20, cloud lifter, and the top handle. I added the small rig accessory to the top handle to "sure" it up. It is so nice to record directly in camera when I don't feel like syncing in post.

    • @noth606
      @noth606 หลายเดือนก่อน

      old comment, but since you have the Smallrig handle thingie, have you gotten good use out of it? I just ordered an Fx30 and the smallrig handle accessory 4830 "back bit" for it too since I've heard people managing to break the top handle when it's on it's own due to it being just plastic. Having XLR's hanging off the top in particular without low profile angled connectors is a potential snag hazard, had that with other cameras with top handle XLR.

    Just picked up an FX30 (coming from the older Blackmagic Cinema line) and went with the bundle with the top handle - definitely a much-needed accessory in my world. I'm a musician and I do demos on my channel of audio effects units with synths, drum machines, and samplers, and the idea of recording 4 channels of audio EMBEDDED in my video is going to make editing SO MUCH faster/better than syncing up my H4n files. Was super pumped to learn that the handle did 4ch audio. Excited to start using this thing! Appreciate your content btw!

      Hey man. Quick question for you. Do you find the quality of the audio via the top handle is similar to running it through an interface? Basically I have been using an interface for my 2 mic video podcast setup. But if this thing works it would save me a huge ball ache of having to connect the mics through an interface into the laptop. Especially on location.

    • @Duskmos
      @Duskmos 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@HeywoodandStuff It's absolutely good enough for TH-cam! I mean probably not as good as the highest end stuff, but it just depends on your standards. I wouldn't use it to record my album, but I've been happy with it for my videos. If you check out any of the videos on my channel, I'm using it to record the line audio from my music gear and my Beta 58a at the same time, with a free channel to spare.

    Sir I love your videos. Especially the one about the Slog color correction and white balancing on the fx3. You describe very easy steps to check and setup everything. I have seen many other videos before and it seems like other TH-camrs make the process way too complicated by using external hardware and monitors to setup the exposure on the camera. I like your approach more. Thanks a lot for sharing.

    Awesome videos Josh!
    I think that the XLR-K3M, although not as sexy as the "top handle," is more versatile than the handle--especially for those of us who have Fs7's, a7siii, etc... Also, I'm not a fan of mounting an external monitor on top of the handle, growing the rig upwards and tending towards making the camera front heavy. With a SmallRig half cage, and the XLR-K3m (and a few odds and ends) you can mount an external monitor more in line with the FX30's touchscreen directly below--counterbalancing the rig and lowering the external closer to the flip out. Yes, you lose the cool handle, but in my world; most of the action is better covered from my chest up to eye level... Happy to share my FX30 setup.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah, pros and cons of both. It really depends on how you plan to use the camera. I do prefer the top handle for run and gun stuff like I showed in the video, but I agree the XLR-K3M is more versatile overall. Glad we have options!

    I have to say, I still prefer recording into my Zoom H6 and using a shotgun mic to capture reference audio. separating your audio sources helps avoid the pain if something does go wrong. Plus syncing in Premier is super easy nowadays and editing raw 48 /24 audio in Audition is way better than messing around in Premier trying to use the essential sound panel.

    Hey man,
    I'm curious if it's possible to use a shoe ribbon adapter, much like you'd see for a remote flash in photography to attach to the handle.
    Basically I have a FX3 in a static position mounted above my desk facing down. I prefer keeping it in the small rig cage I have for it. What I'd want to do is use a ribbon shoe apdater from the audio port on the top middle of the camera to the audio handle then mount the audio handle on my overhead. Do you think this is possible? I can't really find information about others doing this.
    Thanks in advance

  • @peteroates37

    On the fence on the fence!!!! So, can you talk about the pre-amps on the unit? I'm struggling with either grabbing the xlr top handle with the FX30 or using the cash to pick up the Rodecaster Duo on release in July. I know the Duo offers the ability to tweak the sound quality and add effects to the mic (NT1 Gen 5), BUTTTTT, I do like the idea of not having to match audio in post. Is that the main question people ask themselves haha? My use case will be in office talking head, streaming/zoom calls and the odd single podcast. Thanks in advance and you've got a new sub! Great content. Peter, Vancouver.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pre-amps are average. Not amazing but not awful. The convenience is great though and you won't have any sync issues when streaming because the audio and video get send together to your computer.

      @@Josh_Sattin thanks a mil for the reply. Can there be synch issue when streaming? I was looking at the streamer x and Ecamm live set up. Looks like it streamer x provides one audio/video source into ecamm. Thanks again, ordered body only in the end. Am I going to regret this? Haha. Cheers.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peteroates37 I haven't used the Streamer X so I don't know how it handles that. If you are sending audio and video separately into your computer they will not sync up. You will have to go into Ecamm and set a manual delay. You can always buy the XLR handle separately later if you change your mind. I have done streaming a lot of different ways and personally always prefer to send the audio into the camera to avoid syncing issues.

    Hey. Do this handle use battery power? I mean if I will use it with my fx30 the battery will run out quicker? Maybe it depends on the mic which I will use? If yes, what if I will be using "rode video mic micro" with an adapter? It will still use my fx30 battery power? Thanks in advance

      It depends on what I'm doing. For simple quick setups or run and gun I would use the top handle. If I need a lot of audio inputs and am doing something more elaborate than I would consider external audio. For most things I do, the top handle is great.

    I find it bizarre that anyone would choose to not get the top handle. The audio input option is priceless.
    My biggest gripe after excessively working with the FX3 is the lack of a REC button. It has the interface to send 24bit audio, there must’ve been room for a programmable button or two. Would save a lot of awkward fiddling to hit the other REC buttons

      I do not do audio stuff, normally, but I did have a project from a client,
      where I had to use a Tascam recorder.
      DaVinci can match the audio pretty easily and all... but,
      not having the need for an external recorder, could be cool.
      BUT, I do not know how often I will have clients like those...

    Hello
    Thank you for your kind explanation and guidance.
    It's a comment from a year ago contents, but there's something I can't solve, so I'm inquiring.
    For my fx3 camera, I set the ni shoe 2ch setting on camera and input1.input2 on XLR. Then when I check the file I recorded on premier pro, the sound is confirmed on audio channel 1 to stereo, is there any way to make it appear on audio channel 1 and channel 2 mono respectively?
    The context can be strange because it's a question through a translator. I'm sorry about this.

    • @Josh_Sattin

      I unfortunately do not use Premiere Pro so I can't offer you any guidance with this.
