Nobody asked but in today's video I am sharing some popular IKEA products that you shouldn't buy. Im also giving some alternatives to these items since Ikea has such a massive selection of things. Mixing higher end pieces is definitely the key to elevating some of my suggestions. You can find lots of decorating ideas if you search for specific ikea pieces on the internet so don't feel like you have to buy everything from Ikea.

It's a disease of the human mind. Wanting to feel superior or different to everyone else. I'm sure we all have it to some degree. I agree, everyone should do what works for you. Personally, I will get what serves the function I need or desire, and also whatever makes my home feel like home to me.

Same girl. I bought 4x1 kallax version and I put it horizontal as my tv stand. I do plan to add some cool legs, just to add little somethin' somethin' to basic kallax 😂

I am glad that you did not just hate on IKEA furniture, but gave alternatives to purchase from IKEA instead. Your home should be a reflection of your own personal style, but nothing wrong with getting a little help to upgrade your style choices.

YUP. so tired of these Studio McGee's stuff. I prefer Opalhouse. Some of Studio McGee came from my home country that is not an "original" design or material per se from cane, rattan, etc. as they're stuff I've grown up with and costs pennies if you buy it there and they charge so much here.

And that is the exact reason why i love shopping for vintage antique furniture. Its unique, one of a kind, and cheap 🙌🏻 you can come up on a $200 dresser when they have them at stores for like $800 plus tax 🤷🏻♀️🥴
San P you are allowed to have your own opinion but personally I think that Studio McGee’s style is so more than just cane and rattan and while yes those materials might be sold for way less where you are from they are pretty comparable to other places. I also think that Studio McGee really does have a style since her whole thing is mixing styles to be what you like. Her items are versatile and can be used in a plethora of spaces. These are just my personal opinions and this might not change your opinion but those are my thoughts.
@@sarasmith3124 thanks for sharing your thoughts and defending Studio McGee, despite being unnecessary. My point is most of current Studio McGee's style and materials is not an original. It is "borrowed" from existing cultures and places elsewhere with a huge markup. Not saying those aren't "stylish" but those are not original as they claim to be. And, it is tiring to see a lot of hype on their stuff featured by every TH-camrs who probably never decorate anyone's home or business professionally and trying to influence us toward that brand. Curious why there are other styles from Target, such as Opalhouse, who is stylish, may use the same materials, affordable, and more original and not given the attention that it deserves?
Kallax is amazing. It's the only shelf that perfectly fits board games and doesn't warp from the weight. I have 300+ board games in my library. The other recommend shelves would never work for the same purpose as a Kallax.
They’re great for record collections as well. We have a few white ones and when the vinyl is filling each cube, it just falls into the background.

Kallax are perfect for us vinyl record collectors. It fits your albums perfectly.
It's also good for readers with lots of books, especially graphic novels. Billy is better, but Kallax is a good alternative.

The pendant is one of the most affordable and beautifully designed pendant by ikea and Ilse Crawford. I'm not surprised if everyone has it in their home. It's Ilse's contribution to the world to make beautiful design affordable.
I get why people have a problem with it because everyone uses it, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s nice! Basic things doesn’t mean that they are bad but you also might wanna change it up a little and try something different. Even though it looks good doesn’t mean everything else is bad. I hope you understand what im saying.
This is true, I have some other ilse crawford pieces from this line (ratan-style lounge chair) and the circular nesting plates and they are beautiful. They will be worth a lot down the road, like other signature IKEA pieces.
I agree, it is beautiful and I am so happy I have it! I was shocked to see my origami ceiling shade right at the end but not spoken about as part of this video! I got that over a decade ago from Habitat. I bought 3 and they are still statement pieces uptil today people comment on them.

My kallax are crucial in my home! I have one in my sewing room that holds my boxes of different fabrics and trims, all labelled, and one in our living area. The bottom row have doors on to store the pet food (otherwise my rabbits will help themselves) and the next row up are mustard linen boxes, also housing pet items and essentials for the house (batteries, lighters, hand sanitizer etc). I really want to paint it and change up the pulls, but it’s staying!
Oh for sure, I don't think he's saying they're useless, and as utility shelf they are pretty much the best thing there is with the best size at the best prize. I use them for record storage myself. I think his point is just that, as a decorative shelf in, say, a living room... you can do so much better than a utility shelf that everyone and their mother has
Kallax is wonderful as a room divider/double-sided bookshelf in an office. I'm an academic with books for days: the pretty glass shelves in the living room, yes! But my office is floor to ceiling books, and Kallax are massively helpful.
Right! You just need to use it in the right way. You can customize these and upgrade them. I think it's mostly about making use of it in smart and design-happy ways :)
This is exactly what I do with mine haha I use it as a room divider, and stuff it with my books and other things I want to display. The fact that it's open on both sides makes it perfect as a divider, and pretty useless (in my opinion) against a wall.

The sinnerlig pendant was designed by Ilse Crawford. It's simple, and everyone has it. But it's because it's already iconic and an Ikea classic. I agree with you that there are other IKEA pendant that are nice or nicer than Sinnerlig, but I still think it's a valid piece of design
Kallax is just practical whilst still being ok in the styling. Your alternative is certainly more stylish but it's no where near as practical and customizable
I think the smaller versions of Kallax are alright, you can also hang them up or put them on legs so they aren't as bulky. I'd go with Billy though if it comes to a simple bookcase though
@@justynawisniewska1213 I have the kallax against my Malm bed in my beedroom cause i needed storage and didnt really could get anything else that fitted my style and u can also build the kallax in many way i bought the bigger one and took away the mid part so i can but a smaller tv or place lap top so i can lay and bed and watch something.
It´s also twice as expensive..

Strandmon is insanely comfortable comparing to all others chairs I tried at IKEA, so it's still a winning piece for me!
and the new colors are very pretty IMHO! Yes, it's pretty big and basic, but it doesn't have to be your main piece.

YESSS! And the trend now on vintage and all these vessels. OMG! The expenditures of hundreds of dollars! I just repainted my Walmart $20 paper mache vase and it looks like these expensive "vessels" and i had bought a planter pot years ago for $30 that's now trending as "vessels" for hundreds.

I have the ikea lamp shade in my dinning room and I love it! I could careless how many people have it and who has it. I shop for things that speak to me and things I find cozy. I don’t stick to any Desing rules if I like it and if it’s in my price point I will buy it. I like watching videos and looking at Pinterest because it gives me inspiration but I do me when it comes to my home 😁

Just re decorated my room with lots of IKEA pieces, one of which is a smaller Kallax unit instead of a TV unit! It looks great in my opinion and as there are things you can do customise it by adding drawers, doors etc it is a really versatile piece of furniture! I just have two boxes on the top two and trinkets on the bottom!
I had Malam bed before and found it to be really comfortable, I liked the headboard TBF!

Malm is actually really nice. Its low to the ground and very comfortable. The bed is so minimal without the storage. Also, the dresser and extras that come along with it are really cool as well. Overall I was very impressed with it.
I got that Bed because the minimal bed I wanted that was identical to the malm was 1200 😱😱😱

The build quality isn't the greatest but yeah I absolutely agree. You definitely get more than you'd expect for the price. It'll hold up for a while.
The space matters, too. Small spaces need smaller profile furniture.

That sofa is really nice, but I actually like our Ektorp sofa. It’s super affordable and sooo comfy and great if you like cottage vibes, and you can wash it and change the slipcover if you get bored with thw look, too! I mean, if you have kids and pets that’s just awesome. I would recommend it, actually, even though I have seen those wrinkly one too.
The Malm bed does low-key remind me of when I used to make beds for my Barbies out of shoeboxes...
The same can be said about the Tom Ford book and all the Target releases. If you want your space to look unique, buy things that aren’t from big box retailers.

I quite like the Alex nine draws. To me it looks sleek especially against my two billy bookshelves, and fits in a small blank space between the end wall and the bookshelves. Also nine draws are quite practical to categorise all of your stuff in each draw.
There are companies that have make up organisers just for the Alex drawers

The Strandmon chair is actually not looking clunky or big in the room. Its also insanely comfortable. I dont have it but when i go to someones home and i see one, then im the one sitting in it 😂

I prefer the Eket for the modularity, but either one is the way to go for storing a bunch of stuff. (Though I’m not certain records fit in the Eket.
I have the Ektorp sectional sofa in my beach house. It's 10yrs old and still looks like new. No "wrinkling" arms. Yes, it does look like a PB copy and that's what I wanted for 1/4 the price. Anything will continue looking new and fresh if you don't have fricken kids climbing all over it every day.
I’m sorry you can not tell the difference between the Pottery Barn sofa and the Ektorp... no way.. I worked in a furniture store.. every roll arm slip covered style sofa look the same..
My Ektorp sofa has to be at least 20 years old - and still looks good, it's still comfortable, it's sturdy, and the styling remains classic. As soon as a slipcover looks a little ragged (my cats sometimes use it as a scratch post) I put a new slipcover on it and it looks new again. And the fitted slipcovers are at an excellent price. It was a great buy back in the day. Not sure why, but Ektorp also occasionally changes name - it looks like now it's called Uppland, but I can't remember the original name.

I know plenty of friends (and acquaintances) who need to announce where they bought their overpriced furniture and what crazy amount they paid for it. I don't purchase furniture to impress a sales person. Ha! If that's your goal, just leave the price tags on your home furnishings.
I have ektorp arm chair and it is like the best arm chair ever.... I thrifted it, when it was already 8 years old and it stands in my living room since another 6 Years now. With 3 cats and 2 indoor-bunnies, that love to sleep on it 😅

I have a Kallax shelving unit. I love it for my crafting room, because the cubby holes make yarn storage easier and more attractive. As an avid crafter, I need supply organization that I also find pleasant looking.
I almost bought a Malm bed (with the drawers!) with the intent of creating a fabric cover for the headboard that I could change when I got tired of it. But then I found another set, from a different store, with which I fell in love. I'm still waiting on delivery but can't wait to decorate my bedroom in the way I've dreamed of for years!

Mother-in-law has two of the wingback chairs. I can say nothing feels better when you're tired than sitting in that chair while it swallows you up and resting your head on one of the wings. It should really be a guilty pleasure chair, you shouldn't have it but it feels so good.

A note about the MALM or any other IKEA bed with drawers under it, Do NOT get this if you've got cats. Our cats found a way to open the drawers, somehow close them (??) and then get lost inside. We ended up having to get a whole new bed frame, because everyone was so traumatized.
The Strandmon chair is so confortable I actually sleep on it instead of sleeping on the bed when my back is really hurting. Personally I feel that it is much more elegant too.

😂😂😂 the MALM, the best one!!! Literally bought that as my college apt bed frame and ALL my friends had it too. V happy to say we have upgraded to an upholstered headboard.
Sitting in my home office looking at all the books and vinyl LPs stored in my kallax system, and adding some Alex systems for my nail polish collection.
I have the Malm Queen storage bed with the under mattress/frame storage that is on hinges and you lift the mattress up at the base of the bed to store items underneath and it is awesome!!! The bed is modern and I get compliments all the time, and with a great mattress its ultra comfortable. I've never hit my head on the headboard or caught my toe or leg on the corners of the bed. I would recommend Malm beds without hesitation!!!

Me too. I think its nicer to find art made by local artists that talks to you. I have found its not expensive either. I do have framed early 20th century magazine ads .. it sucks the magazine was cut up but I do adore them. I dunno, my personal style is pre 1950s things that aren't big and famous.. mostly cos they are different and definitely cheaper😆
The Kallax unit is perfect, in a utilitarian sense, for those of us that have a craft room. I scrapbook 12x12 books and the Kallax is the PERFECT size to hold the papers, tools, etc. Open shelving, while looking awesome and chic, would NOT be practical in a craft room setting. So, IMO, there is a place for Kallax in my home🤷🏼♀️😊😉
The Alex drawers and desk set up is perfect for the crafter. I see these in scrapbook rooms everywhere and the seem to work well. I think depends on what you need the product for...the plain white works with other module craft items. Right now, my craft room is in my closet drawers so there's that.

you are such a breath of fresh air. i have been following other great interior design youtubers for a while, but none of them made me laugh out loud like you did. so enjoyable, i love it!
IKEA is made for students, children and those on a budget to have a bit of style with functionality. What IKEA does not offer is longevity of its products especially in a family atmosphere where usage is 24/7. For a student in high school or at college, or a busy single or couple, IKEA makes perfect sense because you are normally not in your home all that much, so there is less wear and tear. Arvin's point is about "level up" design which will be more an investment in pieces that are good to best quality and will remain timeless. He even showed examples of some better IKEA choices. All that said, your home is your domain if you are comfortable in it then it is designed for who you are at present!
I bought a Fjalbo TV unit but it's not for my TV. I spray painted the metal doors and added rice paper "screens".
I also added different knobs. I love it. It's really important to customize IKEA
Kallax is great! I have 3 in my closet, but I agree they look juvenlie. The best IKEA product series are the PAX wardrobe system. Absolutely love them!

NAUR the Fjallbo is one of my favorite sets, I love the industrial look of it and I would totally buy that tv console lol. I love that whole set and wish they had full size matching desk like the writing desk they have. There is a definitely a way to style it better. I don't really care if the things are hidden inside it tbh. I think it can work if you have a modern (not rustic) loft space with industrial vibes. Alas, I live in a log house and I don't want to do traditional LODGE decor so I'd like to incorporate a bit of industrial to it at some point.
I haven’t seen any pendants like that in anyone’s home.. I don’t like to see the same giant chain, Tom Ford books, vessels, geodes and more from channel to channel. There is a group of you that have look alike homes. Your personality saves you. You are fun to watch.
I have the Alex drawers, I love how deep they are for storage. I only have one from the ones he mentioned so I am assuming I am not doing as bad lol

You were a bit hard on the Kallax shelves. They do have a purpose especially if you have a large valuable record album collection. My vinyls are organized, convienent and look fabulous... i have made the Kallax work with my decor and it's my individual design statement.

We just bought the farlov and I have to say I love it! It is probably my favorite purchase from ikea. It is a really great couch. I can't wait to slipcover it in something from Bemz, but it's still pretty even without the custom slip cover.
I have a screened entertainment center like IKEA has because I don't want to leave the doors open in order to turn any of my electronics on since remotes and controls don't work through most wood doors. Plus I'm industrial style so it works lol.
It's also good for ventilation, some of those electronics do get quite hot.
Lol I looove almost all of this furniture and I don't need my home to appeal to design nerds on the Internet 😂 thanks for the input though
I love what you said, it has to look expensive. Thats exactly what I told my boyfriend when we were furniture shopping. Affordable but must look expensive. Just because its cheap it doesnt mean you should buy it. 😊

Agree in everything except on the last one. It looks ideal for gaming consoles, so they don't heat up but stay protected from dust still. With a nice sofa and round things that cut the industrial look it can work.
The IKEA MALM bed is super comfortable I have gone through 7 IKEA double beds over the last 2 years and most comfortable yet
I’m on a Malm bed. As a basic sofa base, it works. I got a firm queen mattress from Costco to go on top and added the drawers. It’s fine.

Alex drawers are popular with scrapbookers & crafters for their craft rooms. It’s cheaper than custom & give more money to fill them with more crafting supplies.
I feel like if you like it, if it speaks to you... get it. Its your home, your style, your taste. I mean "don't buy clunky chairs" when we out here buying oversized clunky chunks of stone for our home for a few books isn't exactly a strong message. But again, its all about taste, style and what makes someone happy. Love your videos!

Okay, but I really like the way books look on the Kallax; Then again I've always loved the Billy bookshelves, mostly because my mom had a wall of them, packed with books, when I was growing up, and that's my home library goal.
Glass front billys are a bit pricey but worth every penny! I've got 4 for my library in navy : )

In reference to the sheepskin rug, I bought a faux version on amazon for about the same price, and it's so cute! It's small enough to throw over the back of a chair or on a bed, etc.if you need the added texture
