I love how, despite not being capable of physically fighting the alien, the doctor went out in one of the most badass ways possible for a horror movie protagonist.
The episode is an adaptation of the short story The Autopsy by Michael Shea. It's so well made that, having read the short story 20 years ago, I immediately recognized the episode as it being an adaptation of it, and the short story is so good, that not having read it in 20 years, I still remembered it vividly.
Am I the only one who wants Roanoke to do the rest of the series? Where evil lives, the gravedigger, the demon storage chamber... I hope you got enough support to finish the series
This episode was so chilling yet it was one of the only ones that wasn’t a completely miserable ending. He died, but he took the monster with him.

That was one of my favorite episodes. It really freaked me out and got me thinking, "Could I shove a scalpel into my own eyes and ears? Would I bitch out just to end up like Eddie?" The doctor really took one for the team, that's for sure.

Super appreciate that you specifically touched on how people’s brains can misinterpret human behavior outside their experience or expectations as “dangerous.” As an autistic person, I’m really used to neurotypical people thinking I’m angry or being purposefully manipulative based solely on how they interpret eye contact, facial expressions, and the tone of voice. It’s exhausting to see so much popular media tell everyone that “if you feel like someone has bad intentions, you’re right!” because this message is meant for abled (non-disabled) society. It doesn’t take into account, for example, that plenty of neurotypical behavior is off-putting or can seem dangerous to autistic people. It’s rare to have anyone in media state plainly, “sometimes it’s possible that a person isn’t dangerous, you’re basing your impression on your own brain’s expectations.”
Also, the “fawn” response is seen in men, too. My own experience as an autistic guy is that I have to b on the side of the dominant group (abled neurotypicals) or else there will be DISASTROUS consequences (losing your job, being kicked out of a friend group, ostracized by family, publicly reprimanded, etc.)
To me, the “fawn” response is common for minority groups who have to appeal to dominant groups (mainly cishet white NT men) to survive.
@@transplantman2287 dude, I would agree with you but I totally think this "fawn" response has nothing to do with race, white people only dominate the world for a blink of an eye evolutionarily, it's not even 500 years, for simething to be wired on our brains that deep it have to be ingrained for much more than that, and females, for being generally smaller and more vulnerable, were more rewarded by this reaction than males, as for how sexuallity, neurodivergency or non cis experiences affect that I have no idea, I'm autistic too but I never had a situation like that so I can't tell

Even in groups of "non-disabled" or "neurotypical" people or whatever, sometimes people misinterpret other people. That suspicion may have helped to keep our ancestors alive and can be very useful today, but no system is perfect.
My own experience as a person with autism hasn't forced me to side with.. "cishet" (had to look that one up) able-bodied caucasian neurotypical men? That's a new sentence. I've suffered quite a bit from misunderstandings with people, but I didn't deal with it the same way as you. I don't like this divide-and-conquer tribalistic stuff that people have been pushing. Unlike a lot of neo-progressives/marxists, if I woke up tomorrow and swapped races with my girlfriend, I'd still be the same person inside.
I'm sorry if your family didn't like that your brain is wired a little differently than theirs, but they should realize that life is a mixed bag, and so are people. Not every person should fit neatly in a box. I found out that the information processing filter in my brain takes in more information than is standard, taking a hit for general efficiency but with some good utility to be discovered and unlocked. So, does that mean I should join the Aspie Club? I don't get why having that one thing in common with a bunch of strangers is supposed to make me feel more at home. Feel free to be an "aspie" or whatever suits you, but be careful that your labels don't get you stuck in a box. Or an _Ideological Echo Chamber._ You outta look into that term.
On the note of personal trauma, I can relate to the frustration of learning things painfully that could have been learned much more easily under different circumstances. I figure that if I can learn from the suffering, if wasn't all for nothing. Perservere; there's good to come if you strive to better yourself and the world around you, even in small steps.
I'm also autistic and I have somehow achieved "just weird enough to be charming" status with new people. I don't know how I do it.
I'm also really good at the quick friendship system (idk if it has a proper name) where I am very good at sending "I'm friendly" signals.
It's WILD how many people I have met who will later tell my family that I was charming, interesting or friendly when I'm not trying to be.
On the other hand, a lot of people have also meet me over longer periods, like in a classroom setting, have labeled me as weird, strange or dangerous (luckily, I'm mostly seen as harmless).
Maybe it's something similar, but the other way around when you first meet someone and think "weird" and then later it's "cool"? Especially with people like us?
Please don't use the term cis, its origins is quite dark and came from Volksmar Siguch, look Him up. The people who made the term popular werent lgbt but NAMBLA members mistaken for lgbt, this ofcourse then seeped more easily into lgbt.

What got me loving this episode was the scene where his inner self told him run! When I was in high school I passed a kid who stabbed another guy and he passed me down the hall! We locked eyes and I had a similar moment where the hairs in the back of my neck stood up and I moved back instinctively!
This was the only episode that was actually scary, IMO. The idea of a species of parasites that is specialized to hijack other bodies is something we have here on Earth, so this alien's biology isn't too far fetched, as far as aliens in sci fi go. The idea of being essentially locked into your own body but without any control is pure nightmare fuel for me. Reminds me too much of locked in syndrome.
It would probably take a while to successfully adapt to humans though. It would be really weird if a random species that has never had contact with Earth fauna to be able to instantly hack into the biology of one species.
@@normalhuman9878 In the episode, it is explained that the alien possessor species has been in contact with humans for quite some time. So it isn't a random, out of nowhere adaptation. It is a tradition. Or worse, a biological dependency.

They either had no idea that microscopic life is a thing or more likely they believed that their physiology would be different and alien that earth microbes wouldn't be able to infect them.

I've also heard that the War of the Worlds Aliens wiped out all microbes on their homeworld so long ago, they legit forgot to worry about them. And of course they were an allegory for coloniolism, and Malaria killed a lot of colonizers.

Fun fact, it was coined by a Far Side comic and it just became the name for it, similar to how stegosaur spikes were jokingly called thagomizers (after the late Thag Simons) and scientists realized there wasn't actually a name for them, so they went with it (Far Side apparently had a lot of scientist fans)

Glad to see more people talking about Cabinet of Curiosities, especially this episode, would love to see Roanoke talk about the alien from the final episode. There is one suggestion I have for a lesser-known biology and body horror-based series and franchise that would be cool to see covered and talked about Parasite Eve.
I don't know if you read books but I MUST recommend the Three Body Problem! It adresses how easy aliens could wipe us out if they really wanted to and goes over a premise called the Dark Forest.
Three Body Problem had it's goods and bads but I did like the nihilistic realism of a far more advanced than modern day humanity getting the floor absolutely mopped with its collective head by far more advanced aliens.
Always assume the parasite can jump hosts, burning the body is the safest bet. Which in my mind as a mythology headcanon means the parts of the world that burned their dead and had taboos on handling them began the practice from said aliens influences
I love Cabinet of Curiosities! The doppelganger episode was weird af but the rest were proper horror.
I'm pretty sure the alien's ship was the exploding ball and he mentioned that when discovered their first response is to destroy their ship, which he did, since he noted that he would be too big to fit in it anymore after all the feeding it did.
My dad was phenomenal at estimating peoples characters and intentions. He literally would shake their hand, look at them and tell you if they were "ok" or not. It was seriously scary how spot on he was. Unfortunately none of us inherited that ability ^^ Love this channel and it's content ^^ please never stop !^^

I'm similar, I know if I like someone upon meeting them within 10 minutes. I can also tell the quality of their persons as well and potentially the emotion they're feeling. Whenever you feel something, sometimes you give off a frequency and some people can read that and some people can't. You can also sort of feel if someone is going through a hardship, I once asked an elderly woman if she needed a hug because I could literally feel her grief. Turns out, two days ago her husband had moved on without her. She was shocked that I had known something was up because she had held her composure just fine until that moment, then she cried.
The principle of Checkov's Gun tells me that parasite is likely to be still alive and able to act, with proper stimulation, until such time as they actually show/talk about someone burning the body.
I like the idea finally of an alien parasite type scenario that's actually intelligent and not just a 'grab everything on animalistic level' thing.
but checkov's gun is a narrative principle, not a law or something that likelly happen, the story ended with the camera looking at a river, I'ld say this parasite was definetelly defeated one way or another and humans will now know about their existence, making us able to fight against them
"The Strain" will be awesome!! I really liked the series, despite the lack-luster ending. The suicide bomber vampire was a level of trauma that I never thought about before! Be sure to question the guy who just used a piece of rebar in his bare hands throughout the entire show and somehow never got himself "wormed"...
The ending sucked donkey balls but besides that it was good. Why did they have to replace the child actor though.

Really loved the first two seasons but yeah the ending is lacklustre for sure. Books did it better imo but I think they diverged from them in the 3rd-4th season

The name for the fear that a duck is watching you is *anatidaephobia*. This is a fictional phobia that was created by Gary Larson, the author of the comic strip “The Far Side”. He defined it as “the fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you” and illustrated it with a cartoon of a man in his office being watched by a duck from another building
I think it would be hilarious to have an alien land on Earth, then as everyone gathers round to hear it’s message from a more advanced civilization, it jumps out and starts screaming that “it actually worked!” I just think it’s funny that nobody considers that the aliens might only be a few years ahead of us.

statistically, the universe or just the galaxy is big, that for a case like this to happen, you would not only need FTL travel to be possible, but also not far ahead regards to our own development, AND it would have to be immediately damn fast on the galactic scale. Otherwise the chance to meet someone near your stellar vicinity is plain null.
Beside given our explosive rate of progress, people even just one hundred years ahead would already have a totally insurpassable technological gap. so we would be screwed in a few days, if not instantly with a relativistic kill missile.

I remember reading The Autopsy years ago. One of the more down to earth HFY stories.
definetelly the best ep of the series, the alien could've been a sympathetic antagonist that is just envious of functional bodies and just need to to what it does to survive, but this one is sadistic and goes an extra mile to makes humans suffer, and at the end it was it's ego that blinded it. This is actually why pure evil villains work, you make them disgusting and cruel but at the end their fall feels more cathartic, not to mention the gigachad doctor, I just love when humans face deities, aliens or powerful beings and just points the middle finger while managing to use human ingenuity and willpower to put these intellectually advanced mfs down

This sounds like the anime "Parasyte". Parasitic aliens come to Earth and take over human bodies by replacing the head and brain, and then begin hunting humans for food. The parasites can create weapon-like appendages from the host body, including teeth-filled jaws, piercing tentacles, and even blades. The show is pure body horror.
Interestingly though, there was a minor subplot where two of the aliens try an experiment. One was in a man, the other in a woman, and they copulate to see what will happen. The woman's body becomes pregnant and gives birth to a normal, human child. The parasite eventually develops an attachment to the child, and asks the protagonist of the anime to take the kid before she gets taken out by police. Makes me wonder if some among the parasites in this instance might develop their own attachment to a host body, especially since they can communicate with the human.
well, if the other aliens are like the one shown in the autopsy, I bet they wouldn't fell empathy to any human, the guy was super sadistic and literally seek to make humans suffer just for amusement
Yeah that series' message is odd, the manga goes into it more, the Parasytes are only seen as malicious beings, and when it starts the protagonist is fully on-board with systematically hunting them down with the help of a malformed Parasyte that tried to fuse with his hand but failed, and it began to speak and reason instead. He becomes a super-powered human with a clear cut mission to destroy them. Spoiler:
As that goal gets put into practice, he meets the overtly malicious examples of Parasytes, they have varying 'goals' but one in particular takes pleasure in murder and mutilation especially. It becomes uncomfortably apparent that the handfuls of murderous Parasytes that he meets are the exceptions, not the rule; as when Parasytes fuse with people, they can then interpret emotions and perspectives that were unknown to them beforehand. The dangerous and overtly murderous ones turned out to have given in to baser instincts, taking on the 'human' side of their melding, getting completely absorbed into the 'rush' and becoming fixated on those instincts that were native to the humans, not the Parasytes originally. It ends, last I checked, with a somewhat melancholy realization that he can NOT kill them all, even with the aid of a Parasyte that is now his hand, he just isn't as violent or adept as them. And on top of that, Parasytes while they are inherently malicious in concept of taking over people's bodies, they also essentially BECOME them and can share definitive human qualities like you mentioned, seeing the purely human offspring as more valuable than their own life because of the traits they now combine with. Independently, maybe even collectively, they could actually become more human than Parasyte in the end.
I love listening to your run downs on mirror neurons or anything with the brain. I'm studying neuropsychology, hoping to finish my PhD in a few years, and I have a big focus on mirror neurons and our psychological/neurogical reactions regarding them.

Recently, we looked at some research regarding sociopaths and psychopaths and the possibility of some kind of damage or abnormality in their mirror neurons as a possible key to their behavior.

Hey Roanoke! Take a look at the game Terra Invicta, it's all about combating the alien invasion on the grand scale. Maybe you'll get some hope of successfully defeating/deterring the aliens, since hopefully they have to follow physics as we do. TI aliens don't have "EXTERMINATE!" as their goal though, cause if they aimed for that there would be no game.
A perfect short story with a main cast of just three great actors that still had action, suspense, insane body horror and the defiance of the human spirit.

To be fair the Aliens could be more advanced than us in specific things.
Like for example space travel, but are lacking in the military tech. Especially if they’re are very peaceful or “peaceful” race.
But on that same note, they could probably make superior weapons a lot easier with their tech if push comes to shove.
I mean, if they have the capacity to do Space Travel with the energy and precision required to move in Space without getting lost or smashed, they can literally be early gunpowder level of firearms and we would still be screwed since they can shoot us lead cannonballs from Space (wich would accelerate tremendously causing massive damage) and we have nothing to shoot them down.
Orbit is pretty hugh, id they can go suborbital, than they could easily just drop the asteroid belt on us, no need for weapons

After all we have human history to look back to as reference. Especially even more so because we’re less developed.
There was a short story I read a while back where aliens had mastered anti-gravity due to some element abundant on their planet but otherwise hadn't gotten past Age of Sail levels of tech...and tried a land invasion of earth with black powder weapons. Didn't go well.

Really though what reason would an advanced spacefaring civilization have to care about us. Resources? Can get everything easier from asteroids and moons. Slaves? You can build an intersteller craft you can build a robot. Food? Biochemical barriers exist.

Lol. Do you guys ever watch the history of fighter jets and all air plane technology? SR71 Blackbird for example. RND started in the 50s and the plane came into service in 1971. Mach 3 Speed and can fly up to 80,000 to 100,000 feet. The F-117 Nighthawk. Similar story. RND started in the 1960s. It wasn't till the 1980s is when the US government admit that they have these for a while now. 1999 one of these got shot down. Soon after F-117 Nighthawk is no longer consider "stealth" and was consider "low radar signature". These were taken out of service in 2008 and many are move to Area 51. Each year the military will destroy 3. I recall we still have 50 something left. They still fly these things to train F15, F16, F22 and F35 at night time.
Also the military has been working on 6th gen fighter jets for the past..what? 10 years. F35 are consider 5th gen and these programs usually started in the 1990s. Remember Uncle Sam is that one person who...."misplace some of the money".

We aren't even close to go to another galaxy, the only thing we can send out are satellites. But not humans, since the only place we have been is the fucking moon, we don't have the tech to even go to Mars
And even we could send people to Mars, we don't have the tech to make Mars habitable, for anything other than bacteria.
And to your point about the nighthawk, to go space travel you need to be able to go through the atmosphere and go to at least to Jupiter, since Mars is basically just a jump when you consider how far away Jupiter or another galaxy is.
And we don't even have cryo tech that allows humans to go into cryo and the wake up again
@@weybye91 Course why they'd even want to bother to invade. You want any resources, there's plenty of places with them in the system with lower gravity wells, and less chance of natives bugging you. Labor can be done with machines. Environmental conditions on Earth are exceptionally unlikely to be comfortable, especially since you can just build an artificial habitat in space.

Everyone should have the right to take the driver's liscense test/take the lessons. But no one should get the liscense without strictly meeting the guidelines.
It's disgusting how many friends I had in highschool who failed the driver's exam, only to cry so the instructer gave them the liscense anyway.

I was diagnosed with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Despite myself having never been aggressive to another person outside of self defense, a lot of people tell me I have an "oppressive presence" that puts them on edge. I'm not really a physically imposing person, I'm 5'9" and 170lbs, but something about the way I move puts people on edge. I'm not too sure what exactly it is since most others can't pinpoint it either, but I've heard that my eyes move too quickly and linger too long and my arms don't swing as much as a normal person's. That being said, most people get over it after they've known me for awhile but I still have people interrogate me like I'm a criminal sometimes.
for the part about the nervous system, they have shown that the feeling we get in our stomach that we say to trust is the electromagnetic field of the earth essentially going, this is bad.

Also, humans have to hope that Alien invaders don’t have some alternate means of vision.
Like, imagine they are completely blind by our terms, and they chuck explosives at us, those things won’t blink, heck imagine their senses are so differently set up from us that the explosive doesn’t beep either.
Like they use some kinda weird heat based vision.
And the grenade just gets warmer up until detonation. And that’s how THEY see their explosives. To us it’s just a rock with no apparent purpose, until one of us touches it and goes “weird it’s warm” and then it explodes.
Man, imagine being a species of alien parasites, and most of you are fairly chill, taking what you need, even providing minor benefits, doing a sort of, 50 50 with your host.
