    Consumer grade liquid chrome sucks, always. It'll never dry out and harden completely, it'll always be prone to fingerprints and scratching, you can never ever clean it, because contacting it, even if it's "dry" (as dry as it'll get anyway), will make it go matte, and clearing over it will also make it go matte. And, even if you manage to never ever touch it, it'll still just go matte over time. It utterly sucks for these sorts of applications.
    My suggestion, instead of going with that liquid chrome, use a chrome foil. With a heat gun, it's incredibly easy to apply as it'll just shape exactly to the plastics.
    Also, if you want that white LED, just use the PCB from the gold bridge. :)

    The problem is the "Skin" of the paint is drying/hardening but the underlying layers are not. That is why it doesn't transfer but still shows finger marks and such. You heatgun method dried it because it cooked the lower layers but it probably boiled them and made them pop through the top layer. Maybe a controlled drying process. Spray Booths often have a "Bake" cycle to slowly ramp the heat up and down to rapidly dry paint jobs. Maybe some type of Toaster Oven set to a really low temperature? It is all about temperature control and time.
    That said, I am not familiar with that specific product. Just basing off my second hand automotive knowledge. I'm a car builder but not a painter.

Having said that very few clear coats work well with it. Almost all either cut the shine to nothing or cause a reaction and create haze or bubbling. I've had pretty good results with using pledge.

    You should try chrome paint made by Mr.paint (not the gunze one). It is not the absolute best chrome finish of them all, but due to it being lacquer it is hard as nails and it dryes in a few seconds. Also good practice is to spray chrome on a layer of gloss varnish on top of black since you can polish the varnish without damaging the underlaying black to achieve perfectly smooth base for the chrome.

  • @MrLothsmodelmaking
    @MrLothsmodelmaking 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Molotov is a nice chrome finish but it is a very delicate product. If you read about fast drying times those people probably used mr leveling thinner or the tamiya lacquer thinner, both cellulose based thinners. If you leave it in it's bare finish it will always be touch sensitive and it will turn dull. Clearcoating it is no use because it then turns into a fine pigmented silver finish, a trait which can be used to create a candy finish with clear colours like tamiya has.
    All that being said about molotov, since you are in the US and a modeller, maybe give bare-metal foil a try ? Readily available in the U.S. and it gives a true metal finish and it's very much like wrapping it without adding any real thickness to it since the foils are very thin.

    The thing is that there’s a difference between drying and curing. Paint can dry to the touch in a short amount of time but take days or weeks to fully outgas and cure. Where it will be dry to the touch for light handling but will still be soft enough to where it will smudge and leave fingerprints if you handle it hard enough. When I used to paint show cars and even jets in the Air Force we’d always finish painting on a Friday to it would have at least 48 hours over the weekend to outgas and cure before anything or anyone would touch it at all even though the pain was dry to the touch within a couple of hours of spraying.

    Actually Adam Savage from Tested uses chrome paints alot on his props. And he uses aluminum tape on large flat surfaces as you can buff it quite well. You might consider contacting him on that topic.

    How about using some bare metal foil on a bridge? Easy to apply and it can (with some work) be removed again, and the finish is great

    iFixit Kit spreaders are nice and all, but if you plan on doing a lot of case modding/electronics repair, go to Amazon and buy a 100-pack of black nylon spudgers and a set of "chrome" plated or nylon pry tools. Those plastic parts in the iFixit kits will wear out pretty quick,

    A possible way to chrome it on the cheap, aluminum ducting/foil tape. Then once it's on, polish it.

    asus rog nvlink is chrome and black, im sure it will fit your theme. btw in the pictures it kinda looks full black but its actually not. just turn off the rgb and you get a very beautiful and clean mirror finish without any logo "the beauty of RGB is that you can turn it off"

    I think the people saying two weeks to dry are talking about full cure cycle. Most acrylic are 7 day cure and urethane's usually take 14 days to cure. But both usually are dry to the touch in s fee hours or less and with light duty should be fine.

    pre-sanding promotes paint adhesion, while it does make it smoother, after you sand you need to wipe it down with grease and wax remover while wearing gloves so you dont add oils to it afterward, when ready to paint use a tack cloth to wipe it to remove any air born debris that may have landed on it, and then adjust your flow rate on your air brush so it isnt so high, then you want to start spraying a really light coat around all the edges and curves, give it a few mins to set then for a full coat start spraying off of the piece on one side and in one smooth fluid motion move it over the item and stop spraying after the spray goes off the piece on the other side for the next pass you want 50% over hang on the spray that is already down and repeat your next pass from the opposite direction... ie: left to right, right to left, smooth movement and transitions like a machine.... slower is heavier, faster is lighter. you always want the first few coats to be really light so you want to move fast. any good paint job has at least 3 really light coats and 3 medium coats sometimes 5 or 6 if you are adding a candy over a metallic. heavy coats usually result in runs or an uneven finish so try to avoid them unless you can bake the item afterward and plan on cutting and polishing the piece after clear coat and the piece has up to two weeks to cure properly

    It's not that difficult to mod the LED to purple, you could buy a purple LED and solder whichever of the colours is receiving power + gnd. Else you could tweak with resistors soldered between the supply and red+ blue led pins on the existing RGB led.
