She was so happy at the end of this performance, she knew she killed it. This is what you call psychedelic blues, and Janis eventually moved into the realm of soul music more than psychedelic. She had more so than every soul singer who ever existed, all in one small package.
Loved her little skip as she left the stage. She walked on the stage unknown and walked off a star … and she knew it! Huge Janis fan here for more than 50 years.
This was 1967. This was most people’s first time hearing Janis Joplin. This great blues song was written by a black woman, Big Mama Thornton. Janis was one of a kind. She was the real deal, leaving a huge legacy in her short time on this earth. Gone in 1970 at the age of 27, but she left so much great music with us, and influenced so many artists who came later. Janis was mostly all about blues and rock, but I guess her improvisational approach does have a lot in common with jazz. One jazz song she covered magnificently was Summertime.
First off... Love you and your reactions !! as a side note. Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company (relative "Unknowns" from San Francisco) played the first day of Monterey, to rave reviews. The cinematographer, D.A. Pennebacker, was late to arrive and the first day was not recorded on film, so the promoters (this year the promoters were John and Michelle Phillips. "half" of the very popular group, "The Mama's and the Papa's". (That's why "Mama" Cass Elliot was featured in the recording) invited Janis back on the last day to perform "Ball & Chain" again, to be filmed. Her backing group feared Janis would be signed leaving them to fend for themselves. The promoters also informed a bunch of "record labels", that this sensational women was going to perform again on the last day, so about 8 record companies offered her a contract, and she signed with Clive Davis from Colombia Records, contingent that her band be signed with her. The rest, as they say... "Is history" !!
She died before I was born, but Janis is my favorite female vocalist. Nobody can sing like her. She's so unique and the passion and pain is unmatched. ❤ They don't make music like this anymore and I can relate on listening to older music. 60s-90s and early 2000s ❤❤❤❤❤
There were times in my life when I was so low down, and I would put on the studio version of this song, which in itself is amazing enough, and no matter how painful this song is, it always cleansed my soul. 💚🙏
I was fortunate to see her live in concert 1969 & it was incredible. This concert was pre woodstock, the greatest 1 up to date, check out who all preformed . That women in the audience they keep flashing on is Mama Cass Elliot of Mama's & Papas , a huge star at the time.
Bro like your stach! :) She was a very young girl with a very old soul. She sang her pain and ya can hear it. Janis burned hot but sadly didn't burn long. RIP JJ Her inspiration was Bessie Smith, she also spent time in black churches in TX because she loved the gospel music. That got her named as a N lover among her classmates who bullied her without mercy.
That is not jazz , that was blues... jazz came out of the blue not the opposite and started in New Orleans. Please young people ... broaden your understanding on music so your kids don't get it confused. This song here was labled as blues. Janis was also crowned the Queen of the blues . she sung the blues with such soul. sure she sung a mixture. it would take too much of my time for me to go into it.
To learn about real jazz you have to listen to real jazz performers: (e.g.) John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, count Basie, so many many more, and the real jazz singers: Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holliday,...soo many...
Janis Joplin was NOT jazz, and no one said she was. She was blues. You need to get your genres and artists figured out before you go throwing shade at The Queen of the Blues, as she was fondly called.

The awestruck woman in the audience is another legend, Mama Cass, from The Mamas and the Papas. You should check out some of their stuff also.

This song is nuts! I love it. Janis was perfect. Great reaction.
It was amazing to see Cass and Jimi so stoned and so stunned.

Jazz vibes, really?
This is why us baby boomers hate today's music!
