I built a shade house mostly by myself in my late 60s. It's not perfect either but it worked and did what it should. We can really do just about anything if we just have a go.
Where I live in Southern Ontario Canada, it has been a blistering hot July!! My tomatoes basically grew rotten as they got bigger. I got some cherry tomatoes but not like last year. I have not had one single regular tomato that was not rotten.

@@janehavens3086 Me too. I had one tomato on my only one Cherokee tomato bush and the birds ate it. My cherries tomatoes are doing fine, too. My squash of different varieties was a horror story. My cucumbers grew in the shape of Christmas balls but still delicious. Crazy times.

People can word their comments so thoughtlessly it just makes you wonder if they go through life like that. I guess no nearly no form of communication with the general public is all pleasant. As you continue to grow in popularity as you no doubt will, you may have to cut back on how much time you spend on the comments because you're going to drive yourselves crazy at some point trying to respond to all of them. My favorite scene this week was Joau picking up Sawyer like a little bundle. What a lovely relationship that has blossomed out to be. Exactly! So many of us go through things that are extremely hard. I just did. I reminded myself I don’t live in Gaza. I don’t live in Ukraine. I tried to keep my perspective but it was still freaking hard. Now it’s better and I’m deeply grateful! Grateful always and praying for those that have it so much harder.

Hey guys, possibly a stupid thing to say, but here goes… would there be enough room for an island bench that you could use cupboards underneath for pantry items and the other side sit at to eat your meals? That way you don’t cover the gorgeous rocks too much other than hanging pots and pans and maybe even a couple of strings of onions! 😜 Love your channel btw and all the amazing work you are doing at your farm. Please try to not let the criticisms get to you. As someone who was a teacher for 31 years I had wonderful parents of the students I taught. 99% always were so appreciative and positive about how I was dedicated to making a wonderful and fruitful experience for their children. BUT, there would always be that one who would come along to stab the heart. I know when you are a sensitive person it can cause needless pain. Your snake incident reminds me of a story of myself - as a little girl living in Nigeria on a dam site, my sister said for me to pick up the ‘pretty feather’ aka a puff adder!! I was saved by a local man who lifted me up out of the way. Eek. Your new kitchen looks like it’s going to be amazing. ❤❤❤
here are some ideas for the kitchen. Do 3 tier cabinets with glass doors and no cabinet backing so that you wiill see the tiles at the back but have lots of storage. get a oven and stove top and dont put a eye level oven in make it a tall corner pantry with its side showing to the side of the fridge, between the fridge and that corner pantry side put up selves for jars and things. i really like the pot hanging idea, you get lights with pot hanging frames, with maybe extra down lights and a table in the room for extra workspace, maybe you can do an island with seating around and have cupboards instead of just a table

This! I was also going to suggest the oven stovetop combo to save on space. And an island in the middle with storage on one side and built in table on the other. Then you would not need to put shelving on the beautiful stone wall. Love the pot rack idea! ❤️

Fun video today, Love to see the projects coming together with some end in sight esp with the ideas being made and discussed. The boys are learning so fast and exploring their environment and excited to do so. I do learn so much about the culture of other countries and the way the people behave and think. Last week we went to a Brazilian Steakhouse for dinner. My wife told them it was my birthday without my knowledge. After the meal they cam to the table with a personal sized desert cake with ice cream. Then they sang happy birthday to me in Portuguese. When they finished I said "Obrigado" much to their surprise and to my wife as well. Later she asked how did you know that and I told her it was the magic of youtube via the Newbys as I heard this so often spoken by you and Crusoe. I was hoping you would appreciate that story! Your story about your mum took me back to 1976 and my 1st Christmas with my new husband. I was 22 and anticipating opening something sweet & sentimental as I had gifted my hubby a beautiful engraved watch to mark this special occasion. (I'm sure you can see where this story is going) You guessed right...a vacuum cleaner! I tried so hard to hide my disappointment but I he saw through that and promised never to buy for me as a gift anything with a cord. 😆 For the next 43 yrs until his passing, he kept that promise. An idea maybe to take the 2 shelves the whole way between the upper oven and stove ‘chimney’. Above the sink and dish washer. Use these shelves for plates, bowls And cups etc - easy to stack straight from the dish washer. And really pretty to look at if you get thrifted local pottery :) use the below cupboards for unsightly items :)

I just love being transported to your Portugal homestead and watching your lives as they unfold each week! Seeing the boys growing and developing their skills...Sawyer already counting in Portuguese! Crusoe relaxed in the wheelbarrow with Joao in the garden! Tara and John planning the new Stonehouse kitchen! Tara's cute facial expressions at the end! And John's competence and work ethic! I'm here for it all! Meanwhile in Maine USA our gardens are doing very well with moderate abundance....lots of high bush blueberries, peaches, tomatoes, cukes, garlic drying, onions almost ready, pole beans in the freezer; temps in the 70s and 80s F, so many flowers and birds. The best way I've found to get sticky stuff residue from tape on glass is Eucalyptus oil. Put on a rag, wipe it, and then wipe off oil with soap. Hope it helps 😊

You did nothing wrong. It’s conscientious of you all to respectfully address the negativity but it sounds like just awful trolls that made those negative comments. So in short, say your peace and then forget about it. Not worth your time and energy. There is such a lack of basic common sense and reasonableness in this online world. It’s so clear if anyone has watched a few of your videos that you all are sincere folks. It’s more evidence to the fact that the negative commenters never spent much time on your channel and therefore their comment is worth very little..really nothing. Those you criticize without taking time to understand someone’s intention are ones who have deep frustration within themselves and don’t know any way to vent it in healthy way so they lash out at anyone or everyone. We all can be caring of what’s happening in our world but no one has to punish themselves for events out of their control. Let me say as one who came from a family who were war refugees, I appreciated the help and care we received, and I would never want people to suffer or feel guilty about themselves because of what my family had to endure. Why would I wish that on anyone? I’d rather people show gratitude for their lives by enjoying and appreciating their life with as much joy as possible because the only certainty in life is uncertainty. Take your ashes from the fireplace and scatter in your garden. Check your soil for minerals and the lack there of. You can get kits at a garden center and follow the directions. That way you can see what might need to be added or not. Till in all the weeds and even fallen leaves. It will give you a good base for your vegetable garden. I take big sheets of black plastic and lay on the ground and put some rocks on it hold down. It gets hot in Texas and after the garden is done for the year, I lay down big sheets of plastic to bake the soil. It helps to get rid of pests eggs, and unwanted weed seeds and leave on all winter. At the beginning of spring remove plastic retill the ground. I will leave strips of the said plastic, with small holes for water poked in, down on rows of mounded dirt for strawberry plants the following year. It helps to keep moisture in the dirt, then put hay around the strawberries. You can even do this for tomatoes and vine plants. I haven't tried it with onions tho. Good luck hope this helps.
Tara, the best way to get rid of adhesive residues on glass is to use a glass ceramic knife. It doesn't scratch the glass and removes all adhesive residue. 👍🏼
Its interesting to hear John say the same thing Heath of "Red Poppy Ranch" said some years back when their YT channel was still young. He said that you can read very beautiful comments and then there will be ONE that throws you off completely. He said that the funny thing is that throughout the night probably even a week after that is the only comment that will be playing in your mind. There are people who are "talented" in hurting others. They are so good at it that they may say something supposedly in a normal way using normal words but its meant to hurt through and pierce the soul. It is a spirit inside them and you will find them everywhere. So take heart John & Tara, you guys are awesome! 99.99% of us love you like you are our own. Personally I have had a share of these people.

Pantry idea: maybe build a freestanding shelf-unit (e.g. baker’s rack) to put against the stone wall. Not permanent, so the beautiful stone wall is preserved!! Functional for pantry storage 👍🏻
Oh Tara! Happy Birthday! We too in Germany we had too much rain, and it has affected my vegetable harvest too. My tomatoes won't ripen, the cucumbers are on their way out... and everything in between isn't much of anything either. This is just what gardening is, a new surprise every year. And like you said, the lessons for your little ones are unmeasurable. Once you truly understand how much work it takes to grow your own food, you really become so much appreciative of it, and the people that grown it for you. ❤

A hint for removing glue/tape/labels/etc from glass/metal/plastic surfaces. There is a product which I have used for years and always keep a small container on hand. It is a product called "Goo Gone". It works much better than any other cleaning method that I have found. I’m in Wiltshire. My allotment has been so disappointing this year.it started with seedlings so slow to start as my greenhouse isn’t heated. No squash, one small pumpkin out of 6 plants, worms in potatoes, no strawberries, beans are slow, badgers had my carrots for supper…the list goes on. Bindweed is doing great though !! My brassicas seem ok despite caterpillars. Every year is a challenge but I won’t let it get me down. I still love my allotment and seeing my grandchildren eat tomatoes off the vine gives me joy. Build a small work bench with shelves underneath , put some casters on it. It can store along the stone wall, but can move to the middle of the room, for more counter space. Best of luck on your small kitchen.

I asked for a bicycle one year for Mother’s Day from my ex, and there was a big box in the living room, I thought why didn’t he have it put together. Much to my surprise it was a new pots and pans. I know we’re supposed to be appreciative of whatever we get, but that was more of a gift for him.hehehehe
I’m probably late to the table, but have you considered looking for an old dresser ( possibly with glass in some of the doors) that you could paint up to match your kitchen. I’m imagining it sitting inside the front door with a 60cm gap between it and the door, to accommodate a boot and coat rack. Regarding adhesive on surfaces: applying citrus oil will dissolve it and then just wipe off and wash with soap and water or diluted cleaning vinegar. And, you asked about global seasonal anomolies regarding vegetables: in Australia, we are, for the most part, receiving unusually high rainfall and a cooler winter. As the seas warm, the atmosphere warms, that increases evaporation, which means more rainfall and cloud and less sunshine. As a result, we have a glut of some foods that prefer those conditions and shortages of others that don't. So, indeed, it seems to be happening everywhere. This may also affect pollinating insects, so now you have a beehive, more plants will be pollinated and bear fruit! That may help out your neighbours as well. ❤

For your garden, maybe a bigger green house for the more delicate vegetables and/or raised beds. Sprinkle your coffee grounds around your tomatoes once a week. My grandmother did that and she had the best tomatoes!

I built a shade house mostly by myself in my late 60s. It's not perfect either but it worked and did what it should. We can really do just about anything if we just have a go.

Where I live in Southern Ontario Canada, it has been a blistering hot July!! My tomatoes basically grew rotten as they got bigger. I got some cherry tomatoes but not like last year. I have not had one single regular tomato that was not rotten.

People can word their comments so thoughtlessly it just makes you wonder if they go through life like that. I guess no nearly no form of communication with the general public is all pleasant. As you continue to grow in popularity as you no doubt will, you may have to cut back on how much time you spend on the comments because you're going to drive yourselves crazy at some point trying to respond to all of them. My favorite scene this week was Joau picking up Sawyer like a little bundle. What a lovely relationship that has blossomed out to be. Dear Tara. You have every right to voice your frustrations and keep it real. Doesn't in anyway mean you don't understand how they compare to what others may be dealing with. Please try to not let the criticisms get to you. As someone who was a teacher for 31 years I had wonderful parents of the students I taught. 99% always were so appreciative and positive about how I was dedicated to making a wonderful and fruitful experience for their children. BUT, there would always be that one who would come along to stab the heart. I know when you are a sensitive person it can cause needless pain.

Your snake incident reminds me of a story of myself - as a little girl living in Nigeria on a dam site, my sister said for me to pick up the ‘pretty feather’ aka a puff adder!! I was saved by a local man who lifted me up out of the way. Eek. Your new kitchen looks like it’s going to be amazing. ❤❤❤
here are some ideas for the kitchen. Do 3 tier cabinets with glass doors and no cabinet backing so that you wiill see the tiles at the back but have lots of storage. get a oven and stove top and dont put a eye level oven in make it a tall corner pantry with its side showing to the side of the fridge, between the fridge and that corner pantry side put up selves for jars and things. i really like the pot hanging idea, you get lights with pot hanging frames, with maybe extra down lights and a table in the room for extra workspace, maybe you can do an island with seating around and have cupboards instead of just a table

Fun video today, Love to see the projects coming together with some end in sight esp with the ideas being made and discussed. The boys are learning so fast and exploring their environment and excited to do so. I do learn so much about the culture of other countries and the way the people behave and think. Last week we went to a Brazilian Steakhouse for dinner. My wife told them it was my birthday without my knowledge. After the meal they cam to the table with a personal sized desert cake with ice cream. Then they sang happy birthday to me in Portuguese. When they finished I said "Obrigado" much to their surprise and to my wife as well. Later she asked how did you know that and I told her it was the magic of youtube via the Newbys as I heard this so often spoken by you and Crusoe.

Your story about your mum took me back to 1976 and my 1st Christmas with my new husband. I was 22 and anticipating opening something sweet & sentimental as I had gifted my hubby a beautiful engraved watch to mark this special occasion. (I'm sure you can see where this story is going) You guessed right...a vacuum cleaner! I tried so hard to hide my disappointment but I he saw through that and promised never to buy for me as a gift anything with a cord. 😆 For the next 43 yrs until his passing, he kept that promise. An idea maybe to take the 2 shelves the whole way between the upper oven and stove ‘chimney’. Above the sink and dish washer. Use these shelves for plates, bowls And cups etc - easy to stack straight from the dish washer. And really pretty to look at if you get thrifted local pottery :) use the below cupboards for unsightly items :)

I just love being transported to your Portugal homestead and watching your lives as they unfold each week! Seeing the boys growing and developing their skills...Sawyer already counting in Portuguese! Crusoe relaxed in the wheelbarrow with Joao in the garden! Tara and John planning the new Stonehouse kitchen! Tara's cute facial expressions at the end! And John's competence and work ethic! I'm here for it all! Meanwhile in Maine USA our gardens are doing very well with moderate abundance....lots of high bush blueberries, peaches, tomatoes, cukes, garlic drying, onions almost ready, pole beans in the freezer; temps in the 70s and 80s F, so many flowers and birds. It's heavenly! Rock on!

The best way I've found to get sticky stuff residue from tape on glass is Eucalyptus oil. Put on a rag, wipe it, and then wipe off oil with soap.

You did nothing wrong. It’s conscientious of you all to respectfully address the negativity but it sounds like just awful trolls that made those negative comments. So in short, say your peace and then forget about it. Not worth your time and energy. There is such a lack of basic common sense and reasonableness in this online world. It’s so clear if anyone has watched a few of your videos that you all are sincere folks. It’s more evidence to the fact that the negative commenters never spent much time on your channel and therefore their comment is worth very little..really nothing. Those you criticize without taking time to understand someone’s intention are ones who have deep frustration within themselves and don’t know any way to vent it in healthy way so they lash out at anyone or everyone. We all can be caring of what’s happening in our world but no one has to punish themselves for events out of their control. Let me say as one who came from a family who were war refugees, I appreciated the help and care we received, and I would never want people to suffer or feel guilty about themselves because of what my family had to endure. Why would I wish that on anyone? I’d rather people show gratitude for their lives by enjoying and appreciating their life with as much joy as possible because the only certainty in life is uncertainty. The irony is that commentor judged you all unfairly about the negativity of world events yet all they succeeded in doing was adding to the negativity of the world. What a sad person. Take your ashes from the fireplace and scatter in your garden. Check your soil for minerals and the lack there of. You can get kits at a garden center and follow the directions. That way you can see what might need to be added or not. Till in all the weeds and even fallen leaves. It will give you a good base for your vegetable garden. I take big sheets of black plastic and lay on the ground and put some rocks on it hold down. It gets hot in Texas and after the garden is done for the year, I lay down big sheets of plastic to bake the soil. It helps to get rid of pests eggs, and unwanted weed seeds and leave on all winter. At the beginning of spring remove plastic retill the ground. I will leave strips of the said plastic, with small holes for water poked in, down on rows of mounded dirt for strawberry plants the following year. It helps to keep moisture in the dirt, then put hay around the strawberries. You can even do this for tomatoes and vine plants. I haven't tried it with onions tho. Good luck hope this helps.
Tara, the best way to get rid of adhesive residues on glass is to use a glass ceramic knife. It doesn't scratch the glass and removes all adhesive residue. 👍🏼
Its interesting to hear John say the same thing Heath of "Red Poppy Ranch" said some years back when their YT channel was still young. He said that you can read very beautiful comments and then there will be ONE that throws you off completely. He said that the funny thing is that throughout the night probably even a week after that is the only comment that will be playing in your mind. There are people who are "talented" in hurting others. They are so good at it that they may say something supposedly in a normal way using normal words but its meant to hurt through and pierce the soul. It is a spirit inside them and you will find them everywhere. So take heart John & Tara, you guys are awesome! 99.99% of us love you like you are our own. Personally I have had a share of these people.

Pantry idea: maybe build a freestanding shelf-unit (e.g. baker’s rack) to put against the stone wall. Not permanent, so the beautiful stone wall is preserved!! Functional for pantry storage 👍🏻
Oh Tara! Happy Birthday! We too in Germany we had too much rain, and it has affected my vegetable harvest too. My tomatoes won't ripen, the cucumbers are on their way out... and everything in between isn't much of anything either. This is just what gardening is, a new surprise every year. And like you said, the lessons for your little ones are unmeasurable. Once you truly understand how much work it takes to grow your own food, you really become so much appreciative of it, and the people that grown it for you. ❤

A hint for removing glue/tape/labels/etc from glass/metal/plastic surfaces. There is a product which I have used for years and always keep a small container on hand. It is a product called "Goo Gone". It works much better than any other cleaning method that I have found. It is available in our Walmart stores and in the building supply Houses like Lowes and Home Depot. It really dissolves the adhesive and makes removal a breeze.
Glass cupboard sitting slightly indented on counter for coffee cups & plates as display, next to oven and then 2 Floating shelves right across to sink would look stunning.
Your boys are so adorable! I love how Cruseo puts his hands on his hips just like John. He's John's mini me. As much as i love watching your videos I can't lie, I have to get my weekly dose of cuteness. Prayers you get your permit for the new house but until then watching you build your temporary home is fascinating.

I’m in Wiltshire. My allotment has been so disappointing this year.it started with seedlings so slow to start as my greenhouse isn’t heated. No squash, one small pumpkin out of 6 plants, worms in potatoes, no strawberries, beans are slow, badgers had my carrots for supper…the list goes on. Bindweed is doing great though !! My brassicas seem ok despite caterpillars. Every year is a challenge but I won’t let it get me down. I still love my allotment and seeing my grandchildren eat tomatoes off the vine gives me joy. Everything crossed here for your planning permission xx Sue

Build a small work bench with shelves underneath , put some casters on it. It can store along the stone wall, but can move to the middle of the room, for more counter space. Best of luck on your small kitchen.

I asked for a bicycle one year for Mother’s Day from my ex, and there was a big box in the living room, I thought why didn’t he have it put together. Much to my surprise it was a new pots and pans. I know we’re supposed to be appreciative of whatever we get, but that was more of a gift for him.hehehehe
I’m probably late to the table, but have you considered looking for an old dresser ( possibly with glass in some of the doors) that you could paint up to match your kitchen. I’m imagining it sitting inside the front door with a 60cm gap between it and the door, to accommodate a boot and coat rack. When you move out, you can take the cabinet out and have no damage to fix on the granite wall.

About the shelves on the stone wall: I sugest hang them from the ceiling, with metalic thin structure or steel cables. Then you don't have to cut the stones 😊

Regarding adhesive on surfaces: applying citrus oil will dissolve it and then just wipe off and wash with soap and water or diluted cleaning vinegar.
And, you asked about global seasonal anomolies regarding vegetables: in Australia, we are, for the most part, receiving unusually high rainfall and a cooler winter. As the seas warm, the atmosphere warms, that increases evaporation, which means more rainfall and cloud and less sunshine. As a result, we have a glut of some foods that prefer those conditions and shortages of others that don't. So, indeed, it seems to be happening everywhere.
This may also affect pollinating insects, so now you have a beehive, more plants will be pollinated and bear fruit! That may help out your neighbours as well. ❤

For your garden, maybe a bigger green house for the more delicate vegetables and/or raised beds. Sprinkle your coffee grounds around your tomatoes once a week. My grandmother did that and she had the best tomatoes!
