In my opinion, the whole "let us not use warships" is a far bigger problem for the suspension of disbelief, but I can see your point. It seems in fact, that you have the majority view on the Topic of Protomechs.
@@AGS363 Whereas I and others share your POV that the existence of other things (such as not using warhships) is far dumber than having totem mechs. It's already a walking weapons platform where it would make more sense to simply use tracked weaponry or VTOL craft. So, I say, bring on the horns!
