Last weekend we filmed for 10 hours. Good news is we filmed Waterfall Construction, waterfall faceplate attachment and the plumbing you are waiting (so patiently) for. The not so good news is we have a great deal of editing to do before we can release the videos. Trust and believe we are working hard to get these videos uploaded as fast as we can. You will most likely be fine. We use a transition cement when gluing pvc to abs. The glue used for pvc is to hot for abs and can make the abs pipe weak. The good news for you is most pond applications have very low pressure so the chances of a failure in one of your connections is low. Cross your fingers.

Hey Tom! Under normal operation you should have a nice pull with that pump. Here are the things I want you to look at. Make sure the Basket Plate (BP) is UNDER the faceplate screws when you place it on the top shelf. If the BP is on top of the screws you will loose flow under the BP instead of all the flow coming into the floating weir. Do you have a notch in your BP for the pump cord? The BP must sit flush on the shelf for optimal performance. Let me know if that helps.

Polyurethane. It is roofing and flashing sealant.

You, Sir, are truly a master at your trade!! I was wondering why you use construction adhesive around the faceplate of the skimmer instead of a clear silicone sealer?
+Anthony Franchetti Thank you for the kind complement. The flashing adhesive we use is stronger than silicone yet still flexible when it cures. Great question.
If you plan to have fish in the pond will the roof and flashing adhesive harm the fish?

We don't have a video planned for a floating pond skimmer in the middle of the pond. The Helix Pond Skimmer Video is a floating skimmer that we install OUTSIDE of the pond!
Absolutely!
The polyurethane can handle water immediately!!! We have added water on a bottom drain installation within 5 minutes of installation before!

I know this video is kinda old but what sould I do if my skimmer doesn't have a face plate with nuts & bolts like this one does?
Do you ever find that using the smaller rock in front of the skimmer traps more debris in front of the skimmer? Also little Billy Gene is awesome.
Awesome video Eric and I'm really impressed with the Helix skimmer. Our ponds are in a natural area so we get lots of leaves in them during the fall. We don't have a skimmer on our lower pond but want to install one as a retro fit. The Helix looks like our ticket.
Can you talk about how to determine the depth of the hole when you already have a predetermined water level based on existing pond design and water flow? We use a submersible Cal Pump 5200 (5200 gph) and have about 6 - 8 feet of head from the bottom of our lower pond to the top of the water fall in our upper pond. (The two ponds are connected by a gravity fed stream.) Based on the pump's flow curve, I estimate our flow at between 3250 and 2750 gph. Another important question: will a submersible pump (mag drive) vibrate against the bulkhead of the skimmer and be louder because of it?
Also, I'm really glad to see you using the PL S30 sealant. We just used it to repair our liner in the upper pond and after seeing so many videos where silicone was used, I was wondering if we had screwed up.
Wayne Turner Hey Wayne!!! I'm glad you are excited about Helix!!! The cal pump might need some specialty fittings to make it fit in the skimmer but I'm sure we can do it! Check out this video series where we install the Helix on an existing pond. It will answer your question in detail on water level. PL S30 has never let me down.

What are minimum the essentials for a fish pond? Like skimmer, water fall, things like that.
+TH-camaholic2 Aeration is the minimal requirement, period. However if you are looking to install a nice ornamental pond in your yard, I would suggest a skimmer, circulation pump and some type of biological filter.
Can aeration be achieved by plants alone?
Looks like they would make the skimmer face plate as a single piece instead of 3 different pieces. Does it come with extra bolts, nuts, and washers in case you drop one or two?
Hi Eric, your work is amazing and I wish I lived closer to you to hire you. Out here in western Colorado redoing my large pond/waterfall. The contractor doing the job is very talented and experienced. I have a concern about his method of installing the skimmer. His reg practice is to place the skimmer entirely inside the liner and build up with rocks to eliminate future leaks/repairs at the liner/faceplate. I have not found anyone else who does it this way and I want to know your thoughts (pros/cons). Thank you so much.
kelly doyle Hey Kelly. There are a couple skimmers that install inside the pond liner. Personally I am not fond of this type of installation. If in fact the skimmer is designed for inside the liner installation then you should be find. If the skimmer is NOT designed for inside the liner installation then modifications will need to be made so the skimmer doesn't float. It is not common practice to install skimmers inside the liner but there are some contractors that do….Easy Pro Pond Products offers an inside the liner skimmer. I have used them on small ponds in courtyards with limited space where an external skimmer installation would not be practical. Otherwise I am all about the external pond skimmer. A faceplate without stainless steel hardware is destined for a repair in a few years. If you go to external skimmer request stainless steel hardware. Hope that helps.
Hey Eric I installed a helix pond skimmer today. The inside basket is not pulling down at all. It just sits above water level. It's hooked up to a ShinMaywa Norus 3300 pond pump. The pond is about 1100 gallons. Is the pump not strong enough?

Seems like it might be beneficial to leave some liner in excess once you get the plate installed.. and fold the excess liner around the edge of the skimmer and seal on the inside of the skimmer.. Would this be plain overkill for DIY? You guys know what you're doing, but for a first timer, would you advise against this?

So I can't tell exactly where you are putting the adhesive. Is it to the inside of the bolt holes, outside of the bolt holes, on top of the bolt holes or it really doesn't matter as long as it is under the face plate?

Hi! I make mistake using ABS pipe with PVC glue instead of PVC pipe on my pond,i had most parts done, it will cost me too much money to cut it all of and replace new part. Any help, thanks.
When placing large rocks on the liner you will not know if you tore the liner until you fill with water, why not cushion the rocks with more extra liner.
I didn't do a very good job installing my skimmer and now I have roots growing in between the liner and the skimmer faceplate. I'm afraid it will spring a leak any day now. Is it easy to redo if the liner is already cut?

Can you run the lights and the pumps by a solar panel? Just trying save money when i start. I have seen the solar panels at home depot and lowes.
James Tidwell If you can get 110 to the lights and pumps from a solar panel then YES!!! I have a client that mounted the perfect amount of solar panels on a patio cover dedicated to the pond so they wouldn't have an increase in electrical expenses. Go for it!

Hello I have a 3 1/2 thousand gallon Cue pond in my backyard we recently just decided to move the skimmer which we kind a messed up and got a huge hole in it I was wondering if I can attach the seam to the faceplate and it's not the same seem that came on the line it's a shame that myself can I will it leak or tear
I had a koi get stuck in our skimmer (we think he was chasing food)! Do you have any recommendations for installing a barrier on the faceplate to keep fish out but let the water flow through? Thanks.
What is the difference between pvc and epdm liner?

Hi Eric - can I get a Helix pond skimmer here in the UK? I'm just learning before I do my waterfall pond, it seems the only type of skimmer available is a floating type?
At this time we do not have distribution into the UK. I believe a couple of our Authorized Helix Retailers have shipped the UK. Shipping fees are very costly.
can you use roofing rubber for the liner?
