  • This was deep man. I know it’s the end of his show but the lyrics were definitely well thought out. Bo never disappoints!

    I’ve convinced myself that the line “If I wake up in a house that's full of smoke I’ll panic, so call me up and tell me a joke” is a reference to a quote from author David Foster Wallace (whose body of work I know Bo is familiar with) about depression. Full quote copied below, but the TLDR version is that depression is like being trapped in a burning building - eventually the flames get so hot you’ll throw yourself out the window to escape them - not because you aren’t afraid of falling, but the fear of burning alive is greater. In the end, the flames were too much to bear and Wallace hung himself from his rafters in 2008 at age 46. On a semi-related note, in the outro to another song on Inside, Bo sings “It’s 2020 and I’m 30. I’ll do another ten. 2030 I’ll be 40 and kill myself then.”
    “The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill themselves doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill themselves the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt the flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.” -DFW

      Wow. This is the deepest dive I have ever seen. I mean. I got the Rushkoff reference, but this one us excellent, and forboding to a real degree of concern, bc even he has said that he has anxiety, not depression, the two generally go hand in hand, and when you add derealization into this mix, and how deep he goes, and then he being naked, his work, and him, exposed to the world...yes dark, but this was wrapping up the special, which covered a weird, dark year...thank you for posting this. I feel, like you, that this is integral to understanding Robert Burnham.

    • @LithiumProductions

      This passage is from the novel, Infinite Jest (1996) by David Foster Wallace, American author, essayist and professor of English and creative writing. Infinite Jest was listed by TIME magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels published between 1923 and 2005.
      David struggled with depression, addiction and suicidal thoughts for many years and ultimately took his own life at the age of 46.
      What I really like about this passage is that it does a really good job of explaining the pain and misunderstanding around feeling suicidal in a very visual and easy to grasp way.
      While we don’t usually think of suicide when contemplating our own mortality, it’s not something we can ever rule out. We do not know what trauma or flames of agony lie ahead of us, that will change how we feel about suicide.
      As we think on our own mortality we should not forget that as much as we may see suicide as something we would never do, that those who took their own lives often felt the same way as we do now, at an earlier point. We can use this awareness to be kinder to one another, to be supportive where we can and to look after ourselves in the here and now and build psychological resilience for what ever hard times lie ahead.

    • @xtldc
      @xtldc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@LithiumProductions I never knew it was from Infinite Jest - given that it’s pretty long and has a reputation for being a challenging read, I haven’t found the motivation to dive into it.
      I agree with everything you said. A TH-camr who goes by JrEg has an excellent video essay about suicidal thoughts called “I want(ed) to die”. I really like the analogy he makes between suicide and a button in a video game - like why would the game designers put the button there as an option if you weren’t supposed to use it at some point.

      It's tempting to say ending a show or an album with a medley is tacky or lazy, but like many things it can be done poorly and it can be done really well. I think Bo did a great job mixing the right songs together in a way that not only flowed beautifully from a musical perspective, but also fit well with the overall themes of the special and felt coherent.
      It wasn't just like, "oh yeah, I remember that song. I remember this song too. Neat."

  • @magicbryant8

    • @magicbryant8
      @magicbryant8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      And by far the line that really gets me the most is “Am I right back where I started 14 years ago..?”
      Bo wanted nothing more than to find the fame and fortune as a teenager. He speaks about the glitz and glamor in multiple songs as you know. Art is Dead is completely about how awful he feels to be famous and making money for doing “nothing”.
      So, now he has it all, and he’s right back in his room, doing videos, and has no desire to go back into the world, which is the genesis of his new album. Something he also points out in his monologue in All Eyes on Me.
      Captivating storytelling, man. The guy is a pure genius, unlike anyone else I’ve seen in the entertainment medium.

    Honestly, Bo deserves a shit ton of respect for what he does. He very obviously struggles with an insane amount of anxiety and depression, and the lockdown did not help that at all. ANY person that can go through things like that and still manage to perform and bring light to real issues, and still find the strength to endure through the pain and stress of it all is someone to be revered.

    Wanted to jump in for the first time to say I'm incredibly impressed by your perspective and grateful for your willingness to share tough thoughts.
    I subscribed because of another Bo video you did, I forget which, but you paused after like a minute to make a point of liking his video, and I don't know why but that was like the sweetest thing I've seen on the internet.
    Your attention to detail, ability to see the meaning past the comedy that turns some off at face value, and your presence of mind to understand and demonstrate that small gestures matter...
    Again, I don't know, but this is like some bizarro, genuinely kind pocket of the internet that I want to thank you for.
    Be good, be well, man.

    Just about everything with Bo Has a double/triple/quadruple meaning. You pointed out the broke and broken but he's also broke in. He's been inside long enough with his thoughts to start feeling institutionalized, he talks about promising to stay inside. He's been using the same words to have multiple meanings like that since he was a teenager too. Anyway, appreciate the reactions.

  • @meggsy82
    @meggsy82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I believe the captioning is wrong and he does actually say "broken" not "broke". I do wish this included the rest of the clip. He leaves the room and is met with a spotlight and applause. He tries to get back into room but he can't get the door open. The cheers turn to laughter that feels less FOR him and more AT him. It pulls back and he's watching the footage. Then right at the end....he cracks a little smile. It actually ends a pretty overall dark piece of work on a positive note.

    I feel like there are artists that allude to what they’re going through in their songs or whatever their medium is. But so few make themselves as truly vulnerable as Bo does in his work. Especially in this special. He’s just on another level. And in todays society I get it- with social media you hear everyone’s opinions. There’s no hiding. So any artist that chooses to be vulnerable has to be prepared for the onslaught of ridicule that will come after. So so many, while they may speak on a personal moment or even personal flaws, they still keep a level of distance between themselves and their audience, simply so they can cope later. Bo lays it all out, knowing what’s coming and that it will take a toll on him mental health. And I feel like that’s why he ended it that way. Saying will we be there to tell him a joke when he’s resulted to nothing. And then he’s living that nightmare- naked in front of the crowd that laughs in your face and points out all your flaws. Taunting him.
    His genius never ceases to amaze me.

    I've been binging all your Bo reactions these last few days. Your openness about your own mental health is so refreshing and it really helps you decipher the meanings behind the songs and empathize with what he's going through. It's also very clear how passionate you are about music and songwriting, given by your reactions and your ability to break down his lyrics. Thanks for being so genuine and serving up this incredible content for us. You're the coolest. :')
    I wanted to add: I've also had anxiety for a long time. Diagnosed in the 3rd grade but I'm certain I've suffered even before then. I'll never grow tired of hearing influencers open up about their mental health, especially anxiety. I keep a list of celebrities on my notes app on my phone of all the fictional characters, celebrities, and influencers who struggle with anxiety, and as the list grows bigger, the more capable I feel. So thanks again. You and your content are helping more people than you know.

    I don’t know if anyones mentioned this but, (sorry if I get the music terms wrong) the rhythm he plays at the beginning are the same as his song called “What’s Funny?” which is the first song of his first hour-long special “Words Words Words”. I believe the notes are lower and played a little slower, but they are definitely very similar. This could be him implying that this could be the last song of his last special. Sad to think about, but very possible.

    Yo, first time watching. This is one of the very few reaction videos that I feel hits spot on. And I don't mean that as in it lines up with my own opinion but you really like.. let the song simmer and then gave an actual insightful commentary it's not pausing every minute or so and trying to desperately find anything to make the video longer. I'm a sub now man, this is good stuff.

    “Now Come out with your hands up we got you surrounded “ makes me think of the Kanye rant ends with a panic attack drop the mic and walk off stage. Yet it’s the end of the special and he’s obligated to walk back on stage put his hands up and bow to the audience.

    Inside absolutely wrecked me! I was totally unprepared for watching a complete existential crisis. It’s so incredibly well done.
    I think his smile at the very end of Inside might be a callback to Make Happy, where he says all anyone wants is to watch back the movie of their life as a satisfied audience member.

    As others have said, I think you'll get so much more out of "Inside" if you react to the whole special in pieces but in order from start to finish. These aren't individual songs, really, they're scenes/movements from an entire piece. I guarantee you'll understand so much more of the little details if you watch everything and watch it in order.

  • @TheDaringPastry1313

      Been trying to get this one done for MONTHS. I think you and I are either the only two that know or like this wonderful gem from his earlier days, bc it has been the one that has been consistently overlooked, week in, week out. BUT Cliff does this the fairest way: most likes gets played. I just wish more folks here would give this post a like some week so we can all enjoy Cliff's reaction to this fun little ditty; I am sure (just kinda hope) you agree. Thanks for throwing it upon the board!

    Thanks for not pausing ìt and we all know some songs, you just got to let them play on through for the full depth of the meaning.
    Ps. A pet peeve of my is when reaction channels pause before the verse or bar reaches its climax. Then they try to put together the puzzle without all the pieces and then they end up missing the bigger picture.
