Your comments about not being able to watch the news because it's rough... Yep, that's pretty much why I don't watch. It's just too much. Bit of a personal anecdote related to that: I was going through some stuff and found a paper my parents were given when I was a kid (in the '80s). I was a "gifted" kid and it was a list of "do's and don'ts" for gifted kids. One of the "don'ts" was a warning about not letting the kid get too much exposure to news because then they'd be curious, look up more news, and could end up with existential depression as a result, basically seeing the world as a lot of negative stuff happening without a way to do anything to stop it. Well, they didn't really listen. My dad would watch CNN and then later Fox News constantly. I can't remember the cartoons I watched as a kid but I remember Crossfire. And while I have other reasons for my severe depression and anxiety, that was one of them. It was just always negative. Cover some awful story constantly until the next one comes along. Pretty much zero positive news. And if you look for it, there's plenty of positive news out there, just not covered by the standard news outlets (whether national or local, but especially not national/worldwide). So if you just follow the news through the standard means, you get this awful sense of the world, and if you think on it too much, it's a crushing feeling. So I pretty much just stopped watching news. Doesn't help that everything became so opinionated, so now when a big story comes up and I'm curious, I'll look into it through a variety of sources, figuring out the truth of it in the middle between people spinning one way or the other. About the only news I follow regularly that isn't entertainment is local development news, and that's been interesting as I often see the positives of various things going on in my city, but then I'll visit the subreddit for the city and people will talk about something and all they've had is the negative views on it so they'll be hating on something that's actually a good thing. It's bizarre. But that's what happens when people just follow the news regularly and get conditioned into only seeing the bad. I strongly urge people to look up non-standard sources of news. Heck, even search for some "positive news" sites. They're out there, and will remind you that there's a lot of good in the world, even if you don't normally see it. And if the amount of bad you're seeing makes you feel helpless, just focus on what good you *can* do. Help out a person here or there, even just talking to them, being a friend for someone who might not have any, just things like that. Might not seem like much in the grand scheme of things, but it adds up.
