Magnolia is the only PTA film I've had difficulties with. This amazing film and ur conversation helped me reflect on a lot.

This was my favorite arc so far. I didn't know PTA, had never seen any of his films (including there will be blood), but I was blown away. I love how this series makes me discover amazing films!
Spent the majority of my life thinking I just wasn't a movie person. Turns out I was just watching movies I didn't like. Cheers, and thank you!

I absolutely loved this movie. Hadn't watched any PTA before this one but gave it a go given its backdrop of high fashion. Really glad you guys introduced it to me! The characters are so believable and well portrayed and there's a lot to think about during the movie. I really, really enjoyed it so I guess I'll have to go and watch some more of his movies and experience some more masterful character pieces!

Honestly couldn't sit through magnolia or hard eight but loved the master and phantom Thread. I think once PTA had refined his craft a bit more I can get into his style

I actually found The Master way more difficult to follow and enjoy than Phantom Thread. I just found the characters and topics were way more accessible in the latter, probably because of the more cohesive story and smaller number of characters.
Looking into The Master, I found an interesting interpretation online about how the three main characters represent the three parts of the unconscious mind in Freudian psychology: the Id (Phoenix' character), Super-Ego (Amy Adams character, Master's wife), and Ego (Master)... i think a similar connection could be found with Jungian psychology in Phantom Thread, with the characters representing animus and anima possession

Loved all PTA movies I've seen so far, even on the first watch. Even though with There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread you question what you are watching during it, they both come together so beautifully at the end that they instantly felt like something truly special. This made me seem them as one-time experiences, not to be polluted by a second watch. Inspired to watch them again and The Master now.

Phantom Thread was my favourite of the four PTA films; interesting story, compelling characters and of course expertly crafted. I'm certainly getting to see a lot of films I likely wouldn't have seen otherwise thanks to Four Play. Haven't seen anything from the next arc either.

Really looking forward to this one! The emphasis on him describing himself as a confirmed bachelor has always puzzled me, considering the context of that phrase. Apparently I’m too dumb, so hope you guys can make sense of it.

Perhaps PTA named Alma after Alma Mahler: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alma_Mahler
She was a muse for Gustav Mahler, a great composer at the turn of the 20th century and Franz Werfel, a great writer. Gustav Mahler was infatuated and spoke with Sigmund Freud for advice as she was having an affair.
    All Austro-Hungarian, so german-speaking.

These films are pretty heavy, nonetheless Master got to me but this one didn't, it's mostly because I just couldn't make myself care about characters, era and circumstanes they are in, fact film's craftmanship and detail and beauty is expressed via fashion which is something I don't particularly enjoy, it just missed me. While it objectively might be a great film, subjectively I don't fu*k with it at all and In not sure I'm going to be able to force myself into rewatch in the future.
Nevermind it's always a great joy listen to you guys talk about it. Thanks for this series.
PS: I kinda like 13th warrior, but I have no idea why, because it's not good😂

This is the only PTA film that I just don't like even after this second viewing. The first 30 minutes are really intriguing and strangely tense and obviously the whole film looks incredible but I guess I need more plot. I will say I do appreciate DDL's character a lot more after this discussion.

Alma comes from Hebrew and it means, Nourishing soul or young woman. It’s also the direct translation which the Bible gets “virgin” which is actually never mentioned in the original OT Bible

I actually find that I have a very different opinion of these PTA movies to you and also most people in the comment section.
In short, I loved Hard Eight, thought there were interesting aspects to The Master and Phantom Thread but found them quite wanky overall and completely hated Magnolia. I also have watched and loved There Will Be Blood (I rate Hard Eight higher though).
Maybe my taste is underdeveloped and my view on film is too simplistic, but what I rate higher than cinematography, acting and dialogue is plot.
In that sense Hard Eight won me over, because from the get-go you have the intrigue of this sharp, charming guy who runs the whole movie extending a hand to someone in need. The movie draws you in with schemes on how to cheat the casino and keeps you hooked with all the great conversations involving Sydney and the other wild characters. And after the movie has you absolutely rooting for Sydney, it pulls the rug off under you, showing that he was just a gambling junkie in the past who made all these mistakes, bringing him back down to all the other characters' levels. The character growth is also done amazingly; the ever-shifting lens through which you view Sydney is able to paint a picture of what he used to be, contrasting to what he is showcased as in the movie. John and Clementine start off as lovable losers, then the movie has you believe they have grown as a result of having been lent a hand only for them to do a series of stupid shit and the movie ends with them being lent a hand yet again, letting you imagine how their life continues. Their growth isn't spelled out for you, it happens in your mind.
On the other hand, in Magnolia you have ten characters' different plot-lines crammed into 3 hours which doesn't allow for anything too interesting to be done with them and they end-up feeling very A to B, being carried by actors' individual performances (which I don't personally find all that interesting or entertaining) - thought it is true that some of the story lines end up having more to them. The character growth (where such occurred) felt very abrupt and unrealistic; "I'm a complete asshole" --> pivotal thing happens --> "I'm gonna be a good person now".
Phantom Thread... jeez how wrong I was about this before watching this episode. I guess as a symptom of being bored of the movie (and probably daft) I didn't pick up on the fact that it was she who poisoned him, and therefore didn't understand the whole dynamic between them. This plot-line on its own raises it up a level, even though I thought it was quite boring and hard to watch.
The Master is interesting in the extreme characters it depicts and the life and operations of a cult are always an interesting aspect. I found it interesting and though-provoking, but definitely not something I want to re-watch.
Looking forward to hating all 4 spit-roast movies :P
