I'm seeing a lot of comments about True Grit. The reason I didn't mention it when talking about female-led Westerns was because I was only talking about the ones I've seen.

That Ben Shapiro clip talking about how Hollywood's strong female characters are just women meatheads that can punch men through walls. All I can think about is how that just describes 90 percent of Gina Carano's previous characters.

And the opposite direction of the woman meathead is that every female action hero also is willing to have sex with a man or woman because "she's willing to do anything" I'd like to see them try that with a male action hero who is willing have a gay sex scene where he's having anal sex with another man.

The Daily Wire needs a horror film about a big city in the urban north replacing all of their bathroom signs indicating that they're all gender neutral now. The main characters desperately search for respite from their inability to pee because they refuse to degrade themselves in the woke toilet mob. The twist ending comes when they manage to meet a kindly old lady who offers them the use of her bathroom. Just when they think they can finally relieve themselves, they discover that the conspiracy has gone so far that even private citizens have allowed the madness of non-segregated bathrooms in their own homes. @Maxx Rice She's basically hired because it's easier to get a fighter to act than to get an actor to fight. You see the same thing used a lot in film musicals; getting dancers and singers to act rather than getting actors to sing and dance. However since those three have a much longer history of being overlapping skills than acting and fighting it usually gets better results: for instance dancer Moira Shearer's first straight acting gig was in Powell and Pressburger's The Red Shoes, and it's widely regarded as one of the best performances put to screen in one of the greatest films ever made.

@@tristankennedy9673 I'm not giving all the credit to the director. But if you look at John Cena in The Marine or The Rock in the role of the Scorpion King, the director weren't utilizing their presence and charm, and they aren't good at acting as actors are taught to act. They cannot turn on acting like a professional actor, but they can bring their charm and presence to the table which the director has to utilize. Just like in cinema verite or Italian neorealism, they are natural actors who have to be utilized correctly, they aren't professional actors who can just put on a proverbial mask at the drop of a hat.

I will always remember Vincent Gallo for the spat he had with Roger Ebert over The Brown Bunny. To give you an idea of their relative values as a person, after Gallo re-edited the movie, Ebert actually gave it a positive review. After Ebert died, Gallo claimed he hadn't done any actual edits and that Ebert was simply lying about one or both reviews or had been too lazy to actually pay attention. It's one thing to carry a grudge to the end. I don't think that's true to be honest? It becomes true when a person, regardless of what their politics are, makes their politics their whole thing, their personality basically. A good storyteller (any good entertainer or artist) usually wants to create a good story, not go "check mate lefties" or "we're gonna be so cancelled after this", something SMN explores in the conservative comedy video. But that's also true for some very publicly liberal/left-leaning comic book writers, they put their agenda first and create stories that feel like first draft and heavily suffer from Perfect Character Syndrome protagonists.

The classic Hollywood westerns did have an agenda, but it was a very confused one. The characters wanted to both "civilize" the West and be made tougher by its savagery. They wanted to protect society, but with vigilante justice that itself was borderline criminal. They wanted to be able to go out and be macho - and even kill - but then come home to a sweet homemaker in a corset and petticoats who would spoil them with hot food and gentle sympathy (plus, of course, a little booze and a few saloon girls on the side). They wanted an idealized (for them) world that simply could not be.

That's an approach that worked better in a context like TV channels; you produce a big-deal show people make the relatively small effort to tune into, they actually are likely to watch whatever you put on after it, provided no other interruptions, because there's no further action required. Although it is not a trans character, it is a character that trans viewers may have (I would argue almost undoubtedly) related with and helped them to realize something about themselves they never knew. I've known trans people for whom their discovery was tied to characters as strange as Leatherface and as problematic as the trans people Maury Povich would always parade onto his show.
Whether the film or its story were about an actual trans person, or was intended to be about a trans person in the wild west, or it just so happened that the story featured a female character who dressed and acted like a man for her protection and that sounds extremely egg-like just by sheer unintended circumstance, the fact is that this is one of those films that almost certainly has resonated with trans communities and it absolutely can be read that way, even if you don't want to read it that way.
Critical theory, particularly postmodern critical theory, suggests that if you can come up with an argument for your reading of a book/film/artwork that has evidence to back it up, your critical reading of that work is just as valid as any other critical reading of it.
So you can say I'm wrong all you want, but....the evidence is there...it's just as valid a theory as any other reading of the film. You don't have to like or agree with my reading of it, but unless you plan to prove it wrong with some kind of evidence, you can't say I'm wrong. :) :) :) :)

For those not in-the-know, Vincent Gallo was born into a family of obscene old wealth and showbiz connections, but somewhat on the outer edges of that family-I forget now exactly who he’s related to, and his Wikipedia page seems to have been scrubbed of any mention of his family’s elite standing, but I think it may be Anjelica Huston who’s his mom’s cousin, and his grandparents own a famous gallery, something like that, plus there are other old money connections-so as a young man he grew up coddled in NYC’s late-20th century “It” scene, basically a bunch of young unemployed Upper East Side-ers slumming it around Chelsea with the Soho crowd. He famously had some kind of vintage European sports car, and would drive around making sure everyone saw him, stopping to pester people for money or for modeling gigs. Then, as do most sheltered dilettantes, he decided to go into movies … and surprisingly, he struck gold once with _Buffalo ‘66._ (Although in truth Christina Ricci carries that movie.) Aaaand … that’s it: he peaked in his 30s. He was always little more than a lucky drugged-out kid, and those people often age poorly: what was cute when you were a kid is just embarrassing in your 60s … and that’s all he is now, is a deeply unpleasant drug addict. Everything he’s doing now can be explained by his upbringing: he never had to work, people always sucked up to him for his connections, and he always had money. So now he’s just an old unpleasant drug addict living in a bubble.

Will it end up being the case that Carano will be an action star for the deeply Conservative Alt-Right audience and they'll doublethink their way through Big Muscle Lady not fitting their tradwife idea, or will the DW start to give much more traditional, meek roles to Carano and she has to bite that bullet and become a demure on-screen tradwife in a few years who will have little to no starpower of her own as she's just the side piece to a male actor in some shitty C-Movie.

In addition to the fact of abortion being around during the time of slavery, Candace misunderstood (likely on purpose) the premise of the statement. Schumer isn't implying that *abortions* are the thing the slaveholders wanted, but rather forced birth.
The act of impregnating enslaved women was often one of profit rather than lust. Those babies were automatically property of their white fathers (after changes were made to the law following the freeing of Elizabeth Key), who then got more free labor. Black women, explicitly during slavery and supposedly unintentionally now, were controlled and oppressed through their ability to give birth. With the new abortion bans, we go back to a time when AFAB people in general could be controlled through their uteri (uteruses?).

I'm not convinced that the Daily Wire network needs to e profitable to be a success. There are a lot of wealthy people who will invest in a conservative pro-business venture if it can be passed off as populist. Almost the entire British print media opperats at a loss at this point but the people who own it are willing to sink the money needed to keep it ticking over selling the papers at well below cost to produce for the veneer of respectiability this gives them and ultimately control over the political narrative. I don't think the Daily Wire will ever go public for precisely this reason.
It's propaganda in it's pure form, it's billionaires buying influence that ultimately facilitates them continuing to make their money in other ways. Fossil fuels, union busting, military industrial complex, whatever. If this sounds overly conspiratorial it's not meant to be it's simply a sound financial decision for the people concerned, they invest in something that gives them the results that allow them to keep making more money than they invest in the media company.

Mel Gibson was an alcoholic who was accused of domestic abuse, and made many derogatory statements about gays, J++s, and black people. Since he got cleaned up he's been uncancelled. See: Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Carano is just a lousy actress with a toxic personality, that's why she can't get a job in Hollywood anymore.
Your theory doesn't hold up, especially in light of high profile cases like these:
      - Laura Dern was cancelled for a decade after playing a lesbian.
      - Sinead O'Connor got cancelled for speaking out against the corruption and child abuse in the catholic church. Maybe people should've listened to her instead.
      - Janet Jackson got cancelled for a wardrobe mishap caused by Justin Timberlake. (he's been doing fine though...)
      - Dixie Chicks got cancelled for speaking out against the Iraq war.
      - Winona Ryder was cancelled for ages because of...shoplifting!
Btw, it's important to distinguish being cancelled and experiencing consequences for bad behaviour, because we all know how people who can't get work for being verbally, physically, or s++ually abusive LOVE to claim they're being 'cancelled' by the 'woke mob' for being conservative, religious, or for offending 'those people' in some way. Gtfoh.

You might check out Netflix's miniseries Godless. I dunno if it'd count as a "female lead" and is also something of an ensemble piece, but the role of women in the West is fairly central to the plot since the basis of the conflict is a mining town in which nearly all the men died in a mine collapse, and it contains some interesting bits on sexuality, queerness and gender presentation; e.g. how the bi/pan women who were previously in comphet are hooking up/hiring sex workers, and some of the others are motivated to make a bad financial decision to sell the town *because* they are lonely and want more men to move in again.
I felt the series sort of failed to live up to its interesting premise by the end and sort of just allowed itself to slide into standard Western stuff, but I'd be interested to hear your opinion on it.

They obviously didn't put any effort or money into the costuming. Where is her corset? This is the 1870s, right? Bras didn't exist yet, and as a woman similarly endowed to Carano, I can guarantee that you really do need some kind of support. Also, women didn't wear elasticated prairie dresses. The closest thing to what she is wearing is a chemise- which is underwear.
I know it's a small nitpick on the grand scheme of how Terri me this movie is, but it's worth noting that they put as much effort into costuming (which is incredibly important when it comes to setting a story and giving it authenticity) as Carano did into her accent. But costuming is often seen as a feminine interest, and I don't think the director has much respect for things seen as feminine.

Cinestate films were actually fairly good and in some cases great crime genre films. Brawl in Cell Block 99 is honestly one of the most interesting crime films in the last decade and could be comparable to the closest to the Americanization of South Korean New Wave like Oldboy or Lady Vengeance. It sucks that S Craig Zahler was part of Cinestate's brand because he actually is a very interesting and powerful filmmaker who if given a chance by a studio like A24 or Blumhouse could be on par with Jordan Peele as an interesting voice in genre filmmaking.
