    I've got 3 SG's now and I've replaced the pickups in all 3. I went with a set of Seth Lover's in the SG Tribute (with 50's wiring in place of the PCB), a set of Pearly Gates in the SG Standard (also with 50's wiring and push/pulls for coil splitting), and Saturday Night Specials in an SG Modern. All 3 sound great in their own right, but my favorite is the Standard with the Pearly Gates. Great sound and tonal versatility.

      I’ve been so curious about out the Saturday night specials. How do they sound compared to the PG’s?

    I was die hard DiMarzio only player for years. Strictly SD Pearly Gates for a long time now. Just put a set on my Epiphone Traditonal II LP, with Bournes pots, 50s wired. So, so sweet.

    • @blazeofglory1982

      I never replace the pickups without upgrading the electronics as well.

    • @BigCarmine
      @BigCarmine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jasonlevey5164 Absolutely! I tend to always use Bornes pots, 50s wired, with either Orange Drop or vintage style capacitors. Plus I ALWAYS replace the pickup toggle with a Switchcraft switch.

      I have Gibson 57 classics in my Epi standard, and I am considering installing Pearly Gates. I'm not sure what to exp in terms of change. I'm assuming the PG's are a bit brighter.

    • @blazeofglory1982
      @blazeofglory1982  ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps a bit brighter, but you’ll get more clarity, especially in the neck pickup. If you end up switching them out be sure to upgrade the electronics too. It makes all the difference.

    Thank you for the nice review. This PUs can be wire for splitting. I have my neck PU with a push-pull knob for that. And oh God, rolling back the volume control of your splitted neck PU is another level of versatility, as if you were playing another guitar.

    I had a Washburn N2 and it was fantastic! I regret letting it go.
    I’m not a fan of locking nut/Floyd style guitars but the N2 stayed in tune with very little fuss. It sounded good and played like a dream. Rock solid guitar.

      @@blazeofglory1982 thank you thank you, just looking for the PU for mine Washburn - HB30)) It is amazing how Chuck Berryish it sounds even unplugged. 2003 I guess. Comparing to SD Antiquities, looks like Pearly Gates are more versatile yet mellow.

  • @CT-mw7yu

    I am looking for pups for a LP, and have a gazillion questions. Outside of looks, did the zebras change the sound? You went stock, any reasons you stayed away from the CS variety? The CS are 100 more i dont know if its justified.

    • @blazeofglory1982
      @blazeofglory1982  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find uncovered pickups give the guitar a more open and louder sound than covered pickups. I might go with covered pickups if I were looking for something with less output. I got the stock pearly gates after reading so many good reviews and also playing them in another guitar.
      I wouldn’t say it’s worth it to go CS. The stock pickups are mass produced where as the CS shop are specifically hand wound for you. If I wanted something like that I’d go Lollar or Bareknuckle pickups.

    Once you get into good humbuckers, and especially if you're upgrading a guitar that came with cheap crap, they're all going to sound great, but I've been very curious about these.
    I've got some Seth Lovers in an SG type guitar (D'Angelico Brighton Deluxe) and the articulation of these PGs reminds me of the SLs. I'd probably just choose the set with the best price.

    • @blazeofglory1982

      I’d say it’s set at a normal distance. Neither high nor low. The pickups are high output so they very touch sensitive.

    I have a Pearly gates in the neck of my les Paul and a dirty fingers in the bridge and it’s not a good match. The pearly gates is great for cleaner stuff but not in high gain situations would be great for blues/jazz and lower gain stuff like ac/dc but not if ur playing a 6505+ or a dual rec with gain way up.
