The pickups on a jaguar aren't that different from a strat, aside from the little "teeth" on the side that do absolutely nothing, the majority of the sound change comes from the 1M potentiometers instead of 250k on a strat, which allows a lot more high-frequency to pass through. And if you keep the same volume out of the amp, adding high-range is about the same as removing mid and low-end, which makes the "castrated strat" comment quite apt. Also, if you really want to get a good phat sound out of a stock jaguar, put it in rhythm circuit (horn switch in "up" position), roll down the treble (nearest to bridge) to about 1/3rd and put a bit of overdrive on it.
@@gvtshorts2024 The slant adds treble to the bridge pickup of a strat, since the poles for the thinner strings are closer to the bridge (or further away from the neck, where the strings vibrate the largest amplitude), they sound brighter. The beauty of the "Zed" coil design is that it provides a similar warmth as a P-90, cancels hum like a humbucker, but still maintains the articulation of a single coil that to a degree is otherwise lost. I agree with Rob that a humbucker in the bridge position with the Z-coil in the neck would be a stellar combination. I would also be interested in how an overwound set of these with a tap would perform. I feel that next to a set of custom voices P-90 these are by far some of the best sounding non-active single coils on the market. I have played the American and off shore Comanche back to back and there is a noticeable difference in the way that the coils react to volume and tonal adjustments. So if someone were to be in the market of modding their guitar with a set of these IMO they would do better to spend the money for the American G&L pickups. As always an impeccable performance Rob.

I was listening, rather than watching this (doing stuff on another tab). I spotted the G&L every time. They have a distinctive richness which is complex and really interesting.
I have a 1991 G&L ASAT Commemorative edition. and it's refreshing to hear someone who impartially loves their sound above the Fenders. After all they would have been Fenders if Leo had remained with Fender. Many guitarists judge a guitar by what's written on the headstock they don't really listen to the tone. He picked the Les Paul with P-90s which has confirmed a belief that I have had for decades which is that Les Pauls have a distinctive tone irrespective of what pickups they may have. I have an Historic 1956 Les Paul as well
Great fun video as always. Simply stunned by the quality and wit of the editing. It really is a signature part of these shows and elevates them something really special. Like the BBC mantra. Educate, Inform and Entertain. Wicked.
I think the neck pickup sound on the commanche is really the neck and bridge pickups together, the extra switch adds the bridge pickup to any of the other positions
I would love to see a blindfold shootout with small 1x12 tube amp. Blackface Fender, Vox AC15, PRS Sonzera, Boogie, ect. Lots of players are looking for good small combo amps around 15 to 30ish watts. Everyone is doing modeling videos. But us tube guys are looking for that full sounding tube amp that can be pushed to get that warm tube breakup. Huge fan of the show. I'm over here in Lafayette, Louisiana, and I share tons of your videos with my musician friends. You guys are too funny. Love it! Keep up the great work. Your the only show that has great humor , at the same time, giving great insight on new gear. By the way Lee, your playing has gotten so much better over the years. Nice job. Nice vibrato.
The first guitar i loved was a highway one tele satin red rosewood fret board...Muddy Waters style ..20 years ago.....should have kept it ..was the equivalent of my present American pro 2 strat in quality
A bit off-topic, perhaps, but can someone explain the logic behind the G&L split pickups? The concept, I absolutely love, but... why aren't they the other way around? Like, have the poles under the wound strings closer to the bridge for a tighter response, great for riffs, and have the poles under the unwound strings closer to the neck, for a warmer sound. That makes so much more sense in my mind.
I won't claim to know the actual reason but here's how I think about. The guitar features bass and treble tone knobs that can take away unwanted bass or treble. So why not start from the clearest highs and fullest bass and then subtract? As someone that loves clarity, nothing drives me crazy more than pickups that are purposely darker at 10 on the Volume and tone knobs and only get darker from there. It's much easier to take away frequencies after the fact then trying to add frequencies that aren't there to begin with. This way people don't have to buy aftermarket pickups just because the guitar was made for people that don't like treble. It allows everyone to tweak to taste.
Leo basically just took the concept of a precision bass pickup and put it on a guitar splitting the coil to silent the hum while still having the clarity of a sc, i think the logic there was to have a wider bass and tighter treble (idealized for use on bass) also the upper part of the pickup is situated right where the natural harmonic occurs so i think that had to do with it, hope that helps
My guess is the 1 cm or less in between the halves doesn't make a noticable enough difference one way or the other. Probably need a greater change in distance to notice a positioning change.
Actually Rob got the ASAT right (surprise!) as well: he called high-powered single coils OR P90s. I am in awe how good Rob is at those blindfold challenges. Keep them coming, I highly enjoy these videos :D
Squire guitars are a lottery. I have played atrocious strats' and recently a £120 Tele' which sounded and played better than any Tele' costing up to £1000.
I’ve watched a number of Anderton videos. Chappers has an excellent ear, especially when he is listening to an instrument that is not heavily overdriven. This explains why he is such a good player.
Great showing for G&L. Makes me miss my G&L Legacy that I sold about 10 years ago. Oh well. Would have liked to have seen a Reverend thrown into the mix. Good show, gents!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can tell a lot from the guitar just from hearing the middle position. In a two-pickup configuration it's a humbucker sound combining one coil from each pickup, and in a strat it's the middle single coil pickup itself. That will give you a lot of information about the guitar itself, aside from just the sound of the bridge and neck pickups.
I know. Bugera Amps vs the Amps they're meant to sound like. Everyone is shitty toward the Bugera brand so it'd be interesting to see how the Bugera's V series sounds compared to Fender Amps, or how Bugera's G and T series compare to Marshalls, Vox, Mesa, etc. Although I do think that to make it fair they need to run through the same cab. A nice Emminence Swamp Thang type speaker for the Vs and the Fenders and a good ol Green Back for the more gainey fellas. This might require two seperate videos. Captain can do the V vs Fender Chappers can do the gainey ones.
I know Bugera amps arent gonna sound quite as great as a Mesa Boogey but then again you never know. If you have a similar circuit and similar tubes you should get a similar sound.
@@NeverWolf fluff actually did the comparison between the Trirec and a regular Triple Rec...and the Bugera won. Just remember not to buy a non-infinium one. Also, get yourself some quality tubes.

Well thanks to the blurring of Capt's hand when writing on the board, I now have Tea on my keyboard... Thanks 😅😂
I dont get it. Some cultural thing?
@@morti_garcia "A commonly repeated legend claims that the two-fingered salute or V sign derives from a gesture made by longbowmen fighting in the English and Welsh [27] archers at the Battle of Agincourt (1415) during the Hundred Years' War, but no historical primary sources support this contention." (The Hundred Years War: Battle of Agincourt". britishbattles.com.) Wikipedia
What made it funnier is that Rob waved an extended middle finger (totally without malice) at the pedal board multiple times, and they didn't get blurred.
enjoy your guys content! me and my kiddo love watching you guys! and thanks to all the hardworking crew members who make it possible all you guys rock!
Blindfold El Capitan and have him guess which presenter is playing. Have them try to throw him off. Is that Rabea playing blues? Or Pete imitating Chapman's extremely talented rendition of "widdly-diddly squeel"?
DO IT
Lee isn't allowed to smell them, though.
Blindfold Chappers and have him do it too :P
69th like on your comment lol
Rob has such a discerning ear, six years ago he heard i need a G&L Tribute in my life!
That ASAT is a chuffin bargain
The first setting on the Comanche was neck and bridge, Lee had the mini switch up.
Damn, that G & L S500 sounds amazing
11:12 the Cap throws that Clapton lick from Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking in. Ver' nice🙂.
Man, I really dig the sound of that Comanche!
Me too! I had no idea they exist. I wouldn't know what to play on it, it isn't my style, but I love the sound.
I was listening, rather than watching this (doing stuff on another tab). I spotted the G&L every time. They have a distinctive richness which is complex and really interesting.
My favorite sounds were at the end when Rob was playing metal on the G&L
Crazy, how Spot on the Chappers was. Hats off to him.
Blindfold Challenge : Can you identify the green guitar?!
THIS... 7:41
Billy Corgan thinks he can
revistinha1 yes it sounds greeeennnn
Yes, it's that green coloured one!
@@thebreakfastmenu He probably could, honestly.
I have an Historic 1956 Les Paul as well
Methinks the G&L's kicked bottom! Fantastic ears Rob, and G&L are fantastic guitars!
Loved the Z-Coil !!!
Love that Asat special
GREAT editing at 14:20. I watched that three times! Hilarious.
The first guitar i loved was a highway one tele satin red rosewood fret board...Muddy Waters style ..20 years ago.....should have kept it ..was the equivalent of my present American pro 2 strat in quality
"Do you have a tuning pedal?"
I love you guys.
Another win for the squier classic vibe
A bit off-topic, perhaps, but can someone explain the logic behind the G&L split pickups? The concept, I absolutely love, but... why aren't they the other way around? Like, have the poles under the wound strings closer to the bridge for a tighter response, great for riffs, and have the poles under the unwound strings closer to the neck, for a warmer sound. That makes so much more sense in my mind.
Yes. Same goes with the strat bridge pu
Good question Mr. Blacksteen! I'd be interested in knowing the answer to that myself.
My guess is the 1 cm or less in between the halves doesn't make a noticable enough difference one way or the other. Probably need a greater change in distance to notice a positioning change.
Even though I'm a Bass Player I love watching these Rob Blind Fold Tests! Rob Knows his STUFF!
Actually Rob got the ASAT right (surprise!) as well: he called high-powered single coils OR P90s. I am in awe how good Rob is at those blindfold challenges. Keep them coming, I highly enjoy these videos :D
I like it when Lee plays a lot. so bluesy and relaxing and not too busy!
the first squier sounds great to me ! does anyone share the same opinion ?
I thought it was pretty good too
Squire guitars are a lottery. I have played atrocious strats' and recently a £120 Tele' which sounded and played better than any Tele' costing up to £1000.
I liked it better than the gl, just sounded more strat like also loved the neck p90, wasn't the jag designed as a surf guitar
You guys are so blessed! Like in heaven, friends , pedals, amps and guitars in a god old Andertons!
The ASAT Special sounded amazing! Perhaps need a T style Chapman with those fat P90ish single coils?
i’ve watched this a few times, over the years..
it’s a great video.
and G&Ls really kick ass!!
thanks , once again guys
cheers from Portugal
So, if you get half of them wrong, are you getting a P45?
For the benefit of our foreign friends, a P45 is the official tax form you get when you are fired or leave a job in the UK.
So it all makes sense. He gets fired because he got the half wrong although he should know the script.
Actually one of the best comments I've seen in ages
ROFL
Peel P45 from top gear :D
Love the room sound of the Jaguar at 26:33
Blindfolded playing different Ibanez RGs to see if you can feel the difference between a standard, premium, prestige and J Custom.
This vid convinced me to buy that exact ASAT. Advertising works!
I’ve watched a number of Anderton videos. Chappers has an excellent ear, especially when he is listening to an instrument that is not heavily overdriven. This explains why he is such a good player.
Turned me on to G&L. I have the Comanche they played and it hasn't disappointed. I might get the ASAT too.
AKA "Capt Lee plays a G Chord followed by bluesy, jazzy runs."
Great showing for G&L. Makes me miss my G&L Legacy that I sold about 10 years ago. Oh well. Would have liked to have seen a Reverend thrown into the mix. Good show, gents!
“The old jaguar and jazzmaster fans are a devilish bunch” LMAO!
Captain's singing voice is actually good! ((:
We all waited for the tapped Gibson and of course he nailed it; what a guitar man!
Chappers said that the jaguar sounded like the bass had been shelved, well yeah, the bass strangle switch is on, lol
The G&L's are incredible on all the ones played in this video. Truely outshined all the others.
Can we do a blind folded challenge where chappers just gets to smell various guitars and has to guess the brand name?
He DID guess a Les Paul on another video by its smell! He said they have a unique smell.
Captain can do the V vs Fender
Chappers can do the gainey ones.
I preferred the G&L guitars, very rich sounding without sacrificing being too piercing or muddy, just right. Would love to try them but fat chance down here in Cornwall.
You should try living up here in Cumbria. We've only just been introduced to Bert Weedon's Play in a Day.
That rabbit face had me lol for a good few minutes. You're killing me Rory. Please continue to be awesome.
Rob has such great ears!
