Well, I also have a Krautster II, and the bridge humbucker is 16k. So I had some of your concerns too, initially. However, I really liked the split humbucker sound and I was concerned that the split would be unusable if I switched to a lower output pickup. I wrote to Haussel, who make the pickups, and asked them for their thoughts. They said, “The Splitsound will be different for sure, as the 1959 has about 8,5k compared to about 16k of your actual pickup. So you have to decide what´s more important, humbucker sound, or split sound. Another option could be the 1959 custom plus with about 11k, which is better sounding when splitted, than the normal 1959.” They were extremely helpful. In the end, I opted to keep the guitar exactly as it was and I’m happy about that. I can just use the split for a brighter sound but I love the extra dark tonality for higher gain (and I don’t use anywhere near as much gain as you!) Just my 2p. Whatever people choose, they are utterly fantastic guitars and in all my decades of playing, I haven’t found better!
Definitely an improvement for sure. You can hear the "character" or foundation of the original humbucker's tone when you played it clean in the examples. Gain only increases its shortcomings. As you know, I am on the same quest for my Rock N Roll Relics. Same pickup configuration. I'll keep you posted on what I try. I am looking at Lollar at the moment. We shall see.
Interesting !! I think as you say the neck pickup is the real winner here and it matches the output of the HB better. On high OD I cant tell much difference between any of them , but on the clean side the Cream T HB loses the wooly bottom end and sounds much crisper . Definitely worth the swap especially for the clean side..Keep well !!
Thank you for the great comparison video. After careful listening through studio monitors, I can hear a marginal difference in the humbucker and even less in the P90. The Cream T is clearly fantastic. However the stock pickups do deliver the rock machine tone that the guitar was designed to deliver. Another solution is to simply cut the low mid honk with EQ if it doesn't suit you. I use the GT1000CORE and the Krautster has its own programmed input setting as well as its own EQ block.
Until circa 11 minutes into the video my inner dialogue was saying ‘Paul is going to flip this guitar within 12 months’ as the difference was subtle, and you have a great ear for exactly what tones you’re looking for. The Cream T’s are definitely clearer and alleviate the ‘wooly’ honky mids. Cheers & thanks, and happy playing!
Oooo, been waiting to see how these sound! . . . . With studio monitor headphones, the clarity of the two new pickups is notable. As you say, there's not a 'lot' of difference between them, but the general articulation is definitely better. Do like that P90 though!
Im a newer viewer of this channel and one thing that keeps baffling me is how effortless your playing seems, your left hand looks so relaxed its crazy! The new Pickups sound amazing
I've got a Krautster II with a 59 Haussel in the bridge. I changed it for a BFG Banger from Cream-T. This one was just too bright for the guitar that is quite bright. Put the 59 back in it and it's just the best choice for the guitar.
Lovely guitar and nice tones; I like both of them together, gives it a nice balanced feel. I'm always impressed with your playing too, makes me want to pick up mine and practice a lot.
Sounds fantastic!!! Both the guitar and the new pickups. Very interesting swap. Turns 2D into 3D! Wish I could afford the guitar and do what you did to it.
I’ve been messing around with Cream T Cream of the Crop and Duchess P90 sets in my Relish today. I actually like the Cream T neck humbucker and bridge P90 combination best. I tried messing with the bridge humbucker in the neck position with the bridge P90 in the bridge position too and got some surprisingly great results!
I got to this late. I love a high output pick up so I liked it but it also sounds great like this and as you said fits your sound you like. There’s a guy with the same exact guitar, he had it on utube and he said his bridge pup was the loudest pick up he’s ever had. Enjoy it Paul!!!
I have to be honest I can’t not tell the difference at all ..but am an amateur who isn’t in the room but the big question is will you keep it ?great playing Paul I wish I could bend perfectly in tune like you 👌👌👍
Totally agree with all your findings. Reminds me of when I tried a custom shop strat with '65 pickups - great for high gain, but for clean I found myself twiddling with amp trying to dial it in.
Fantastic guitar indeed! Ultra musical sustain. For the pickups, yes, it's subtle. The first question that came to me was “could these Haussel pickups be made with a little less hot output, more vintage style.” » In other words, doesn't the little honky side (somewhere in the mid of the HB) come simply from the fact that they are a little too hot for a classic blues-rock sound? But they are really thought of as HIGH GAIN! As for the difference between the two sets of pickups, more cream in the mids on the side of the full Cream T humbucker, (but it also depends on the attack of the pick) but a little less definition in my opinion. A little darker (or warm as some would say) than the original. However, I find that in split coil, the original is much more interesting. Total definition and very lively, quick in attacks, which gives it fantastic articulation. The cream has a metallic sound in split, like a harsh voice that I don't like at all! The P-90s A little bit more bottom on some passages with the Cream T, but nothing to call you mother. But again a little more cream. I could live with both. Both pickups mix, I much prefer the original set. The criticism I would make of the Cream T is a certain lack of definition, of clarity in general, but in exchange there is more cream in the mids. We can not have everything. This is why I would order such a guitar, asking if a more vintage side would be possible with these pickups, without losing definition, but gaining a little cream and air.
The comparison is great, what an amazing guitar! The P90 is perfect, I will be hard to find a better fitting PU. My Suggestions for the HB PU are: Kloppmann PAF 59 and Bare Knuckle Stormy Monday.
Honestly I can only hear the subtlest of changes, the original PUPs had a bit more character and sustain, and with a notch down on the volume would give less output similar to the PAF, there isn't enough sound difference to cost value imo, but it's your money your guitar of course.
Thanks for the video. PUPS are always something I've been interested in. Perhaps do a follow on which takes us on the journey of where to start... what kind of specs to look out for which might influence your decision.... and talk through price differential on some of the cool stuff out there. Great video... thank you!
The original humbucker was a bit too wooly in the full position for my taste but by no means a bad tone. The Cream T humbucker was definitely more balanced but do I believe that X-ray scan schtick? Hhhmmm… you may want to check out the Mojotone 59s.
Hi Paul. I prefer the clarity and frequency response of the replacement humbucker. I have a request. Please do a comparison / review of a Fishman Fluence Classic humbucker with another PAF style pickup. The Fluence pickups have coil tapping and a classic and modern mode. Also, I have a question. What is the song you’re playing around position 10:00 of this video? I really like this chord sequence!
There's a big difference in the p90. Not so much in the bridge however the Cream T does a little more defined. To my ears anyway. BTW, I'll buy the original bridge pu from you. Thanks Paul!
Really interesting! I bought a Nik Huber a few weeks ago and I agree with you that it’s a fantastic guitar, really ‘playable’. I could definitely hear the difference with the new pickups, not sure it’s enough of a difference for me to mess around with mine, but thanks for the comparison!
Great sounds from both pickup-sets but if i had to chose i'd go for the Cream-T:s. I have a Ruokangas Unicorn Supersonic that had the same Haussels in it and while the bridge pickup is great for hardrock i replaced it with an unpotted Heaven 57 from Lundgren pickups and i love it. But now when i heard the incredible sounding Duke P90 in your guitar i started thinking about maybe replacing my P90 too.😅
As an Owner of a Krautster III before it was a thing and a Dolphin I know what you mean and whats bothering you. But tbh the Cream T are still very hot but a little Bit different in the Mids but not a lot tbh and clearer and more balanced. The new p90 is a star and way better
Very subtle indeed but much better articulation with the new pick ups. High end string bending also seemed a much smoother, rounded sound. Originals seemed really harsh in comparison. Also have to bare in mind that guitar seems to have a fairly thin body. That being said the sustain goes on longer than my Mrs..
I don't find anything to disagree with what you've said. The original bridge pickup didn't have the expected brightness for a bridge, but it has no problem when heavily distorted. So yes, the added brightness/clarity of the Cream T is a win. When you play the Cream T bridge in split mode, I'm hearing something unlikely (or maybe even impossible?). It sounds like a Strat quack! I'm talking about the segments starting around 8:50 and 9:45.
I would have probably just kept it stock for some different flavour in the collection. I mean what's the point of having many guitars that sound the same or very similar 🤔😁
@@TheStudioRats I mean in the same ballpark, I guess you like what you like but the beauty of having a lot of guitars is variety like having something with PAFs and something with EMGs :D
