Well, that fits perfectly... Shad talked mainly about knights, you commented on the samurai, and I've been planning to focus on Vikings. That video is really coming under fire from all angles... Anyway, nicely done! I especially appreciate the correction on the 11th century Japanese armor, since I know next to nothing about that myself.
Hey Skallagim, thank you very much for watching my video :) I still can't get used to the idea of you commenting or watching my content, I still fall of my chair ahah Looking forward to your video mate
Oh man, I seriously can't wait Skall! We really have inadvertently tag teamed this ^_^ It's like the whole community has come together to promote the truth. I'm getting tingling feelings. . .
Shad, you said that the cavalry was the tipping point on the defeat of the viking, and I completly agree on a war situation. But Matt was talking about a duel (or at least it seemed like it), in that case wouldn't the horse be a disadvantage? Fiore de Liberi talks about how the man on foot is more mobile than the man on the horse
"Nudist vikings"? This guy has heard of frostbite, right?? Edit: Many people are also apparently unaware of the advent of quilted armors (gambesons, aketons, etc.) common to the era.
if you've watched the series Vikings, it's utter bullshit how they focus completely on raiding and how actual farming is only seen once in the series, which ironically is done on a plot of raided land.
Eric Harris If you don't mind manga, I recommend reading Vinland Saga. Starts off edgy and viking/war focused, but the last few years of chapters have been jokingly referred to as "Farming Saga" and "Merchant Saga." Certainly true to its name! There are some major historical asspulls, but the author does a spectacular job of capturing Scandinavian life under Knut/Canute's reign. Of particular note is the scale of life and the drop dead amazing artwork in the later chapters. There's also a key focus on how Christianity filled a void that many Scandinavians pined for (peace/non-violent direction in life) but didn't get with the predominant culture at the time.
I cringed in the viking section, saying that they were primarily raiders and generally saying they were brainless brutes. While I do agree that the vikings would likely lose in such a fight, it's not for the reasons that Mat had.
+mandraxhair they did so in the 9th and 10th century. After 1066 no major raid happened anymore. As gar as I know, Vikings were mere pirates of the norse culture.
Let's apply the principle of charity here, MatPat was talking about single combat so fundamentally this is an analysis of equipment and manner of fighting. Territorial acquisition is irrelevant in that analysis. The vikings were armed and armoured for what they did, raiding. Knights and samurai were armed and armoured for war. That fundamental difference puts them in a separate class from vikings.
Not a single person with an intellectually honest thought in their head would ever believe that random remark to begin with. Crude materials and garbage in combat? So how exactly did they raid a huge portion of Europe if that was the case? Were the Europeans just not interested in defending their rich lands with their supposedly infinitely superior materials and technology? Does Matpat think they made swords out of snow and axes out of straw? And the remark about nudity and "barely any armor"....Does he think Scandinavians just loved to roll naked in the snow during winter for "maximum machismo"? Again, does he think the vikings raided a great chunk of Europe wearing nothing but a sock and their undies? Had MatPat proclaimed that he made the video about VIDEO GAME VIKINGS and would apply real life logic to them, or in other words, wondered if fantasy vikings were realistic, he would have had a decent enough argument. But to have the audacity to call his video a historical analysis and then hide behind the "IT'S JUST A THEORY" nonsense is arrogant and misguided.

@@Demonex118 Danes conquered all Anglo-Saxon kingdoms other than Wessex, what the fuck do you think they fought then ? A bunch of fucks without equipment ? Or when Rolo sieged fucking Paris. They fought enough armies, or do you not apply those things to vikings but to legit armies ?
@@RedFloyd469 im swedish and I like to roll in The snow naked. What? Its great when you hit the sauna! 😁😂 Also tho People Who say vikings weapons and armor where shit has shit for brains... The vikings raided almost all of Europe, parts of northern africa and did expeditions to Western asia. What they think we did this by swinging our cocks in The enemys faces until they gave us thier shit? 😂
I want Call the vikings weapons for shit. But it wasn’t better than Englands wepons in fact They brought Home Their wepons because They were made off stronger metals. Also are you from sweden. Unlucky
Jeffrey Gao they were though, you try eating 2 meals a day mostly bread so poor nutrition and wearing heavy metal armor most people can't even run & leap with their normal bodies today.
25 kg armor distributed over the whole body is not cumbersome and besides, knights were trained for years to fight in armor so moving in their armor would be child's play. Also, Early Medieval knights wore mail armor with gambeson, neither is heavy whatsoever.
Knights were nobility, so they had far better nutrition than your average peasant. Skeletons found show that knights tended to be a few inches above the average height at the time. There are also castle ledgers and trade records and first-hand accounts listing fish, cheeses, and game being served for nobles. That’s not exactly nutritionally deficient. Knights were also highly trained-they had to be. In the Middle Ages, conflict was nearly constant. There was the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror’s invasions of Wales, skirmishes between the Angevin Empire and France, Angevin campaigns into Ireland, the Plantagenets’ repeated campaigns into Scotland, rebellions against rulers (King John of England comes to mind), The Crusades, The Hundred Years’ War (which involved a TON of kingdoms and mercenaries), and Mongol incursions into Europe. Also, there were rapid developments in armor and weapons, so it’s illogical to measure knights in only a few types of armor against samurai, who had relatively unchanged armor over the duration of their time. Knights became more heavily armored during the Hundred Years’ War (specifically after the Battles of Crécy and Poitiers), when French knights were decimated by English and Welsh longbowmen. If samurai had encountered Welsh longbows (draw weights 100-190 lbs, avg. at 160), you can bet they would invest in heavy armor too.
Metatron were to the point and polite the whole way through, but when it came to the claim that "Skyrim go it wrong", the gloves came off! Or rather, the greaves came off, as Matpat would have said...
I would buy a game like that. Like a survival RPG set in the Viking Age or medieval Europe or Feudal Japan, or the Aztec Empire or the Zulus, or Ancient Egypt maybe. Damn, I want a game for every historical period and every culture.
The Game Theorist is aiming his video at people who are clueless. There's no "historical analysis" in his video, but it builds on generalised stereotypes and misconceptions, very little more. His type of youtuber's videos very rarely hold up to scrutiny.
Agreed. Sadly, said clueless people will now go around spreading the misinformation to others. The worst thing is that the channel has just brushed off the given critiscm as being nothing but nostalgic in nature. "I'm sorry if your favorite didn't win or if you have some obscure text that shows something contrary to what we found, but seriously, we did PLENTY of research into this subject and stand by our results and our sources"
actually funny enough many people seem to be calling him out on his bs this time not only in the form of videos like this but also just in the comment section of his own video.
SlenpaiwasHere that's because a.good chunk of other times he's right, other times he's just messing around, and then there's times.like this, where on paid promotions he makes an evidently wrong video, so wrong in fact that i believe he did it on purpose because there's no.way GG wouldn't have known some of this basic stuff like the kanji.
Metatron, a question - have you ever considered getting together with Shadiversity and Skallagrim for an *actual* discussion of the 11th century warrior classes? I've seen each of your debunking videos, and I think that the Historical TH-cam community could do a much better, more accurate, and even more entertaining analysis of a *purely theoretical* matchup between the three warriors. There would have to be agreed-upon rules to even have the discussion - Shadiversity made a great video about a 'samurai vs. knight' matchup itself being a bad comparison, because there's only limited common ground between the two warrior traditions. Still, I think it would promote better historical discussion, and more effectively disseminate historical fact. It'd also be *really, really neat*! It's just an idea though - I'm sure collaborations are difficult. Good job on the awesome debunk video, though!
It might help to also temper some of the over romanticized Japanese culture. I like Japan, but there is too much love for it in general. It's not like it's the superior culture or anything.
@Michael Terrell II Well I'm not European, and most white people suffer from yellow fever...making your remarks not very foundational. I think anime played a huge role in that, and I'm somewhat guilty of yellow fever myself, except I know the difference between rational appreciation, and irrational appreciation. Why would you accuse me of any kind of superiority?
yha and wow my cloth like riveted mail is like moving a old ungreased steam engine around with all that extra full plate. And Vikings I got a joke. What you call a poor Viking? A Nudest! And those Vikings. Man they are so dumb they cant even make combat effective garbage.
Alex Martinezalba Samurai had worst everything. Katana is a fragile and weak weapon that breaks easily so it can't even be used for parrying. Their armor is weak and clunky in comparison to european armor because they didn't use hardened steel nor did they understand how to balance it properly. Their bows are pitifully weak when compared to even older viking bows let alone something like the english longbow. The only reason people think that samurai are badass is because of anime and hollywood. Historically their equipment was just terrible.
"I gotta dock ya a bit for the horned helmets. [...] I guess Skyrim got it wrong too, so you're in good company." "Yeah, but Skyrim is not a province of Scandinavia, mate. They didn't get it wrong, it's another world." Ha ha, I'm glad somebody else noticed that blooper! MatPat isn't the first to have a go at Skyrim for supposedly "getting Vikings wrong." Even though the fictional race called Nords in the Elder Scrolls games aren't supposed to be Vikings in the first place.
julesmaester that is extremely disrespectful to his viewers who wants proper analysis. And this is just my korean name. It's about meaningful as James or Michael. It is pronounced Jiho though
+박지호 James is a derivative from Jacob, which could mean (depending on who you ask) "supplanter" or "may god protect". Michael also comes from the hebrew (lke most christians names) and means "who is like god?" in a rethorical sense. (And thanks Behind the Names for this, a truly passionating site). I'm sure your name also have a meaning, they often do. ^^
Dynahazzar My name does have a meaning but I forgot XD And I do know that those names have meaning. I just meant that it wasn't a fancy account name in korean :)
I love MatPat's work and admire the usual quality of his research but this video...omg..! Wtf went wrong here!? It is LAUGHABLY bad, and worse - it's CONFUSINGLY laughably bad. How on Earth did he botch it all up so horribly? He even got *common knowledge* wrong, and how in Hell did he forget about shields?! I don't understand how a video could be so wrong even with poor research, little research, or no research at all.
Eric Coffey I guess Mat Pats strength is scientific analysis and not historic research that's why it's probably so shocking to some people watching his good videos (including myself) that the For Honor video was so bad.
Eric Coffey he went wrong because I am willing to wager his research stemmed from sources he somehow perceived to be credible but had fallen prey to modern poor misconceptions.
I suspect he did this video on the quick as a commission work, sponsored by the developers and publishers, so didn't have too much time for proper research. Not defending, just thinking of a likely explanation...
Michael Berthelsen it's one.of his worst videos.with errors.everyone could notice, the topic was more fit for gaijin goombah (but no.fucking way ubisoft would.make him so.a promp.video right?) who in fact would have known for sure how wrong matpat is here, especially on the kanji, even.the.editing is.worse tham the average for him, it's like.on.of his old videos from 3 years ago in terms of editing.
Even if he was doing a quick video without much research, all he would have to do was watch a handful of youtube videos to learn a little bit. He did basically no real research at all.
GeorgeMonet The thing is, if they (Ubisoft) gave him an impossible deadline, he wouldn't have the time to research anything properly, so he just went with what he thought he knew, adding stuff. Commission work can be a real pain, trust me. Especially with a shitty deadline. It would also explain the crappy editing. He just needed to throw something together ASAP... =( Still sad, as you said it would be easy to debunk this in a matter of hours...
If I can be honest for a second, I "Disliked" this video. I also disliked Mat's video, but I disliked them both for very different reasons. I disliked this one because it was totally, spot on, 100% right... But obfuscated that fact by focusing not on the things that were wrong which supported the argument or the things that were incorrect in Mat's argument, but by spending a huge amount of time talking about semantics, like the pronunciation of words, the pictures used, things that were obviously exaggerations for humours effect and the occasional, mostly irrelevant slip ups like calling the image at the end "mail". This guy had a very strong, very rational, very believable, totally convincing argument that I agree with totally, but the video spent so long nit picking small, pointless things that it felt more like a haughty jab at Mat's video in total rather than the many, many glaring things wrong with it. On the other hand, I disliked Mat's video because he was wrong. Completely, demonstrably wrong. This video was strong enough to stand on it's own argument and didn't need the video creating trying to strike a cool pose in the intro, picking on the specific pronunciation of words and such. Adding things like that detract from a strong argument by making it look petty.
Then that makes you a hater if you disliked both videos these videos have a common perception from the for honor lore and what these videos did in particular is answer the right questions most common people would ask. If you want to know history read a text book don't go and spread hate because you didn't get what you think you were going to get especially from a gaming theory channel
Jay's Gaming Productions actually, I do believe noneayour beeswax has some decent points here. Although they didn't make many points on the and of how MattPatt's video is "completely wrong" (though we could say that they are utilizing this videos points along with the info provided in other historical TH-camr's responses as their argument), they do have a point about nit picking. A lot of these points against pronunciation and misuse of the language do seem somewhat out of place when the objective is to point out factual falsities in MattPatt's video, and while it is true that they are incorrect, mentioning the smallest of these that doesn't really effect the point which is trying to be made doesn't really do much to strengthen an argument, and may even hinder one's point due to potentially creating a perceived bias or seemingly creating padding. If they perceived the amount of nit picking in this video to bother them enough and reduce their enjoyment, then it is absolutely fine for them to hit the dislike button to show their disapproval of the issues which, in their eyes, may undermine this video as a whole. They have presented their reasons for disliking this video, and it seems said reasons are logical and based in either fact or opinion and has stated said points as such, so if we are to define hater as one who will dislike anything for seemingly no reason, then I do not believe the term "hater" is justified in this situation.
Could it be said that MatPat's Video is yet another example of the "Asian/Japanese mysticism" mindset at play here? Now granted, I am not a fan of MatPat to any extent so pardon my Biases, but it really seems like Matpat has sought out to, consciously or otherwise, confirm this mindset that anything East Asian (especially Japanese) in origin is automatically superior to anything from Europe or North America. The same mindset that spawns the idea that Katanas can cut clean through a plate armor like a goddamn lightsaber. Perhaps it's unintentional on Matpat's part, but there's a part of me that wants to say that Matpat is appealing to the Katana Cultists and believers in Asian Mysticism, and the fact that Matpat doesn't really go into detail about the various armor types and just states that the Samurai Armor was "among the best in the world" seems to appeal to this mindset. Thanks Metatron and seemingly the entire historical youtube community for calling Matpat out on his bollocks. P.S. Also, just for fun we should all create our own stupid myths about other cultures besides Japan, Europe, Scandinavia etc. I've been doing some research on the Turkic and Mongolian Peoples of Central Asia, prime material right there.
Interesting. The Islamic World really is due for some RPG material. While yes, it has lightly been touched upon, I have yet to see it fully explored to any extent which immerses the player in the culture and ideas of the Arabian Peninsula and beyond. Usually what I see is the trappings of the Middle East (long robe like clothes, Desert homes made of Sandstone or adobe or clay, large ornately decorated temples and whatnot) but usually the core functions of the society are unrelated or related to the pre-Islamic culture in some way. So it would be interesting to see an RPG, even with Magic, be done through the lens of the Islamic World. Plus, I would want to see how magic is interpreted and functions
@@Eshray If you were to make a game about islamic culture and turn it into an rpg, a great deal of conservatives would say you were obviously just being a sjw and justifying what they call "the invasion of Europe", whatever paranoid nonsense that might mean. A great deal of progressives on the other hand, would call it "cultural appropriation" and would equally be pissed. It's a lose/lose situation. Now mind you, I find the idea itself very interesting, and don't actually think a developer needs to give two flying fucks about politics, if he respects the art.
I don't know, the Metatron seems reasonably culturally literate. I'm pretty sure he knows what an Easter Egg is. Rather, I think the point is, 'why are you putting words that say one thing, next to English words that say something else?'
No, Skyrim is based around *Nord* culture. Nords in Skyrim are not Earth Norse. There's certain similarities on the one hand - the Nord value system, as well as Nordic art, seems very similar to the real-world Norse. On the other hand, there's elements of Nordic culture that other cultures did - for instance, the whole mummification thing is Egyptian, of all things. I'm also pretty sure that - at least among Norse - the penalty for any and every crime was not 'death'; you had a few things that Skyrim just doesn't convey well, like the concept of weregild, or the concept of Outlawry (there were grades of Outlawry, actually - some grades of Outlawry let you have a chance to move away before the law no longer protected you, as Erik the Red found out.) Outsiders already existed outside of Norse law, so things were different. Additionally, the Nords of Skyrim exist in a political and cultural environment that's more like the late middle ages - you have advanced metallurgical techniques that allow for plate armor and long weapons. The Cyrodiilic Empire has diminished to the point where Skyrim is technically one of the holdout provinces that hasn't broken away. Additionally, the Imperial language is shifting from something like Latin to something more like Italian. The Norse ceased being a problem for Europe by roughly the 13th Century, which falls well before the High Middle Ages; we're not sure of the details, but it's thought that converting to Christianity had something to do with it. In short, while the Nords of Mundus look vaguely like Earth Norse, the fact is they exist in an entirely different political and cultural environment (as well as the fact that - as Skallagrim notes - the "Icy Wasteland" trope doesn't really apply to the lands the Norse inhabited, except for certain fringe regions.) They're really not that similar at all. There's also the fact that one's real and the other isn't, but we shouldn't get into that.
MatPat is kinda like the modern media. If he talks about something you know about, you know he's full of s!@#. But as soon as he talks about something you're not too familiar with people somehow believe him.
*cough* CNN and MSNBC *cough cough* Huff Po: "We estimate a 98% chance of Hillary winning the election" *COUGH COUGH* "Russia coined the term "Crooked Hillary" *COUGH* Sorry I must be getting down with whatever sicknesses Hillary has... EDIT: Nightwish and Shoe0ffHead subscriptions? Nice! :D
A Scam Involving Corndogs Not Libertarian. Libertarians nowadays have caused a skewing of the image of what a Libertarian is, but a Libertarian has essentially identical, if not completely, views of economy as a Conservative except their social standing is different; Libertarians believe in more freedom to do what you want, such as do drugs and homosexuality. Basically, to be a Libertarian is to be a Conservative with more self ownership. I would say Libertarian is borderline Anarchy (also very misunderstood ideology). Libertarians, like Conservatives, believe in small government, but they also believe in a smaller military as a result of the smaller government, and they believe in more personal freedom. There is Left Libertarianism, and that's probably what I would call Mat, but Libertarianism as a whole is neither left nor right wing, just like Anarchy can be left (Anarcho Communism, AnCom) or right (Anarcho Capitalism, AnCap).
+A Scam Involving Corndogs Well, Capitalism is a Conservative idea. It's a Libertarian idea. It's an Anarcho Capitalist idea. You could call him a Conservative SJW by that reasoning. There are, according to Wikipedia, 14 different main streams of Capitalism; although it includes Nazism despite "Nazi" meaning "National Socialist Party of Germany", so clearly Wikipedia is contradicting itself and is not, contradictory to what some people think, omniscient. And if Matt said Capitalism is flawless then I have more respect for him. I looked it up, and it does depend on where you live if Conservatives believe in small or big government. Conservatives in the United States do advocate for small government, but somewhere else, say Syria (not sure), Conservatives might advocate big government. I'm slowly learning that very many of Matt's videos are poorly researched in one way or another... I'm currently watching his Stark Trek Fascism video, and, not that this makes him not an SJW but just supposedly not an advocate for the riots, he does say something along the lines of "Because the only perspective we get is from the Federation then how can we know if the Federation is good or not?". Just wanted to bring this up to say maybe he's not too far gone and isn't being hypocritical and isn't saying that these riots really are anti fascism. Matt also quoted Hitler with a negative connotation saying, "Society's needs come before the individual's needs" which is similar to something Hillary said: "We must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society", so assuming Matt knew she said this (probably not), then maybe he's not for Hillary, but also just not for Trump. He says, "they [fascists] despise Capitalism, which was designed to give the common man democratic power through their spending", which I wouldn't nearly equate to him calling it perfect. Now I'm not for Planned Parenthood, but that's like me saying because Hitler was a fan of Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood, and he was), then Planned Parenthood must be bad. Matt isn't saying that Capitalism is good, he's not saying it's bad, he's simply stating that fascists oppose it, even though fascists are for Nationalism, which is good to be patriotic; even though they implement it in such a way that it is not true patriotism. If you were to look at pictures of North Korea right now, you'd see flags everywhere, but not out of patriotism, but out of force. Also Fascists are generally against Communism if you look it up, so if Matt had mentioned that would that mean that he was for Communism? You're, I assume, basing your claim that Matt is Libertarian Right over your other claim that he is for Capitalism, and that claim alone is presented in this discussion so that's why I assume it's the only reason. I won't say he's *not* Libertarian Right, but I definitely don't believe he is, because basing that belief off of what you said, which is that he is a Capitalist and therefore Libertarian Right, isn't a very sturdy claim. Also, again, Capitalism isn't just Libertarian. Libertarian Right I'd assume is also against Social Justice, so I'd guess he's not. To sum it all up, Matt did not support Capitalism. Capitalism is not solely a Libertarian philosophy. He does have SJW tendencies. Matt is probably not Libertarian Right. Conservatives in the U.S.A are for smaller government.
+VieneLea Please don't turn this into a political debate. This subject has nothing to do with it. The media got it right. Hillary won the majority of votes. What they didn't expected (And not even Trump himself) was the stupidity of a lot of Americans. The media (understandably) did a nice coverage of how stupid one of the candidate was and presented huge amount of arguments for why you shouldn't volte for him. What they didn't expected (and most of us also didn't) is that we're leaving in the age of post truth which people can peak and chose the information they judge correct and don't care about facts anymore and just care about what they believe. In other words, for some people, is more important to make "the main stream media" look wrong then do the most coherent thing.
Turns out I was wrong. He just thanked haters. He did seem somewhat emotional though. The video is about Undertale it's specifically the WD gaster one. It's a minute long segment right at the beginning.
One thing that people don't think about is also this: Medieval Europe was in a constant arms race. Warriors of different nations and cultures constantly clashed against one another and strived to one-up one another and it's how their weapons and armor improved. Even Crusades contributed to that factor. Meanwhile, Japanese were constantly stuck on their isolated island, fighting amongst themselves, always using the same tools and weapons, with no way to improve and one-up each other, except through tactics. Hence all the more reason (other than poor quality metal) that Samurai would lose.
That's an excellent point. You might say the Japanese, instead of developing any new equipment, just focused on making it prettier. Just from that alone, modern people in the age of media just believe it's better. Because it looks cooler.
The Japanese travelled and waged war all over Asia during that time before the isolation period began. Stop pulling shit out of your ass when you clearly know nothing.
I tried to look it up and I couldnt find any references to classical japan traveling anywhere and waging war. All I found was infighting from 700-1600. And if I try to search for wars in Asia all i get is modern wars. Do you have any specific examples.
Maybe he's referring to that one time Toyotomi Hideyoshi tried conquering China, but was beaten by Koreans. Well, although it's not "all over Asia," the Japanese did become isolated afterwards. To be fair, the Koreans had a badass on their side, otherwise they would have lost. Terribly.
Turmoil this makes zero sence. They would keep trying to improve weapon technology to get the upper hand, not stagnate and stay at best on par with their enemies. Even based on common sense this just reeks of bs
MatPat not doing any research into what he's talking about? gee, what a fucking surprise (not rlly) he should stick to his idiotic FNAF vids looking for the nonexistant lore.
Except there is lore ( but you probably were just insulting FNaF just for the sake of it, because everyone just loves to hate that series much to my annoyance ) anyway I think you should go back to Mat's video and read his comment he did do research but... Just read the comment alright.
Aldito Hernandez Curiously they made videos for each factions... I really HOPE that MatPat doesn't see it from the bad site of things. That he watches these videos and get info.
I enjoy these video to be honest. Even Matt Easton of Schola Gladiatoria hinted at making a video about it. And I think thats good, because these falsehoods spread by the Game Theorists video need to be thoroughly debunked.
I saw this video about five months ago (after seeing Game theory‘s hunger games video, then his for honor video and then Shadiversity‘s video, in which he referes to you) and it got me interested in history. Now I‘m addicted to all kinds of historic content and I just wanted to thank you for that!
"Samurai is the best at everything," "Viking's weapons are garbage," "Poor vikings fight nude." Wha- I can't... I just... what the hell? Metatron, despite you showing so much respect to that guy, I can't help but hate him. Sorry. The way he speaks is really insulting, and the fact that he gets so many things wrong just adds into it.
You think he would of question things when he heard of vikings, guys that go about and do raiding. You think having good weapons would help in the raiding or they could of looted a better sword, same for armor. Or gone, hmm that village was rather tough, they had some petty good arms and armor they used against us. maybe we should start using that or copy their designs. For his version of vikings sounds more like lord of the rings orcs than thinking breathing humans beings with a brain.
Agree with depressed arab here (nice username), but he is indeed good in science and math theories. This video just happens to be absolute garbage for some reason, but then again, all youtubers make garbage content every now and then.
People say MatPat is a smart bloke, but he gets so many facts wrong and screws up so many real world theories...smart or a good marketer to look smart?
He really is smart, the problem is he knows very, very little of history, specially warfare history, he tried to do a video about a subject he knows little about, and knowing how he's popping what, 2 or 3 videos a week, he probably didn't research a lot and had to resort to common sense, which is the bane of all historical knowledge. In the end he go it wrong, but as many people have already mentioned, MatPat has this one big flaw that he refuses to fully admit he was wrong on something, so he's just ignoring the For Honor video and all of it's replies. So don't expect to see any mention of that video from him, or an apology (honestly, there's nothing to apologize, he was wrong, but he did no one any harm).
hey metatron! I know you said you were gonna more videos about Asian countries like China, but would you also do a video of the byzantine empire? like how they were different and similar to the western roman empire, in terms of clothing, military equipment and their battle tactics
Or make a video about the Western Roman Empire and explain how different they were to the Western Roman Empire in terms of clothing, military equipment and their battle tactics? Later in the Roman empire, west or east, the armies were more geared towards defence. And later still, after the arabs became dominant, the armies were more geared towards just keeping an army in the field and harassing arab armies on their way home after plundering or breaking against the walls of Constantinople. Early imperial armies put the heavy infantry center stage. Late roman armies tended to be more cavalry based. Partly because a weaker and less populous empire needed to be able to choose if to fight or not. And partly to collect troops together quickly. The front lines were often made up of militias bound to the land. This is true of both the limitanei and large parts of the Byzantine armies. While cavalry or horsecarried infantry made up the more professional troops. Also, early imperial armies had a core of italian heavy infantry. Later roman armies were mostly auxiliaries, be they German or Arab. And later still, after the triumph of the arabs, they became more roman again, or greek, or anatolian. Anyway, localized.I can recommend the amazing uber great podcasts "History of Rome" and "The History of Byzantium". They go into these issues in depth in some episodes.
"I will do a historical fact check on your historical videos. For free." Good guy Metatron. You care so much about historic accuracy, you will help others make money just for meticulous love of history. I fucking love this guy.
Smug Aqua-sama he's not doing it to be a good guy... that's called passive aggression. He's taking a shot at his pride and protecting himself from trying to dismantle another persons TH-cam.
MatPat's channel is much more focused on science, numbers, statistics, not history. When it comes to that he shines, but with history I'd say do your own research.
If you consider history, yes this was pretty atrocious. But his research for science and statistics is typically spot-on and accurate (coming from someone studying medical terminology right now, he gets all of his facts on anatomy and the human body right from what I can tell). He's still worth the sub, just not for history.
if he can't research history properly he shouldn't make a video about history addressed to so many people, and even worse is that he won't admit to his mistake
It's very annoying seeing people spouting absolute nonsense about historical facts to an impressionble audience who will believe and perpetuate the myths and nonsense they hear from these people. Honestly this guy's video made me really angry as he is talking ABSOLUTE NONSENSE with every word that comes from his mouth. I think he was trying to be wrong on purpose as surely nobody could be this ignorant and ill-informed... I commend you for keeping calm and not breaking things XD Anyway thank goodness there people like you, shad, lindy who will make responses to prove theaw people wrong and educate people on real history, martial arts and weapons/armour :)
Ravogard Dragovar i'm prettu sure it was on purpose, some of these are basic topics that members needed to know to get their job, there's no way they didn't do it on purpose, even the editing is sloppy compared to their usual. maybe it's a protest on ubisoft because.they didn't actually want to make the video.but.they forced matpat to? i have no idea.
So, after watching MatPat's video, it occurs to me, that *guessing* is not really a good substitute for actual research. Especially when you are not very good at logic or processing information, and come up with ridiculous ideas like people from the north not wearing much. Because, and I know this because I live in the north, not wearing much can make you dead even without the help of a hostile warrior.
How many videos responding to that Game Theory video will be posted in the next few days? I know of four so far. Let's keep a tally, shall we? For he has incurred the wrath of TH-cam sword nerds!!
DrTheKay as bad as the video was for his standatds.and in general, i still don't understand all the hate, he made errors in the past but overall matpat video have a higher success ratio than not, this on the other hand is so wrong and bad that he mist have done it in purpose, there's no way in hell game theory members would get kanjis wrong.
While I wouldn't call it "hate", his video has incurred a higher level of irritation. The reason for this, I think, is that he calls it "a historical analysis", al the while he is mostly wrong on his history. That his video was sponsored by Ubisoft and in many ways felt like a rush-job probobly didnt help the matter. But hiistory is important to people, and when someone makes as many errors as MatPat did, it is expected to raise some ire.
2 of the main 3 most people wanted are out, we're waiting on Skallagrim to cover Vikings. I haven't had a chance to watch it but I think Antony Cummins did a video specifically on Kyudo to reply but that may just be ironic timing
he's spreading misinformation, as a guy who calls himself a nerd and a man of science. That would be cool if he admitted his mistakes and acted accordingly, but that's not the case, so what he does is unforgivable.
Honestly matpat should have just done a video on "which of the three for honor factions, as presented in the game, has the most advantages and would probably win the entire war?" Then any real world facts don't matter at all, as it's all the internal game world stuff, with only a few minor things like catapults and various other siege devices that show up in the game needing out-of-game reference.
Some of us did, but he didn't reply directly while I was watching. He did, however, mention that something related to the episode was going on in the background.
@Fritz12N i know that there was plate armor before the 12th century, the roman lorica segmentata and the japanese armor Tankō. I meant in the middle ages.
@Fritz12N also even if I didnt realize there was plate armor before the 12th century i would still be partially right since knights didnt have plate armor back then
Come on Metatron. You're arguing with a guy who literally said an FPS is racist cuz it had the majority of characters being "white males" and Earthbound and Undertale is connected. Do you really think anything that he said is even credible? Most of his "analysis" is based on what he sees, their typical stereotypes then throw in complicated numbers to make his viewers think he's smart. It's almost like ppl who come to TED talks and feel good about themselves when they say a complicate word.
The problem is that, the vast majority of people lack any minor sort of common sense and will believe that what MatPat says in his videos to be factual, despite existence of evidence that proves otherwise. MatPat wouldn't have even half the amount of subs he does if more people had common sense.
All he would have to do is put "fighting with a bearded axe" in the TH-cam search field to see some videos showing it was more than rudimentary trash. Although I will be honest and say I don't know how far some of these techniques date back, I am sure the Viking who had to rely on it in battle did more than just swing it wildly.
I guess Mat is focusing too much on the "pleasing the large crowd/ paid promoting the game" when it clearly shows that For Honor has many of the things right but fundamentally wrong if it's actually based on real world.
I think the problem with MatPat is that there is a ton of false information. Its easily to find articles and books saying that Japan and China were light years ahead of Europe. This is of course false but its easily to be mistaken when this isn't your main field of research. He's much better with science and statistics which is a whole different type of research.
It's also super easy to find people like Shadiversity, metatron, Lindybeige or Skalagrim too. I don't even remember how I found out, but it wasn't through research, I don't think. I think I just looked around for cool medieval stuff and found Skallagrim, then suggestion boxes sent me around.
This might be excusable if MatPat hadn't called it 'historical analysis', or called his show the 'smartest show in gaming', or explained that he started Game Theory as a way to show off his researching prowess.
China was indeed decades ahead Europe for a bit in many things, not all though, at least until the 15th century if mind serves well, but Japan? Japanese warfare was great to kill Japanese people, but outside of there, against countries that had spent millenia killing each other and adapting to kill each other more efficently? Yeah, no, sorry.
You and Shad are being too nice to this crook. He doesn't give one fuuuk about being historically accurate. He is catering, no I'm being too nice, he is kissing mall-ninja's ass so much he is at risk of having their stomach acid burning his pretty-boy lips. He did this twice! He DOES NOT CARE! Fool me once, you won't fool me twice!
Well, it was sponsored so he probably had another theory ready to go. And plus, who wouldn't accept a fat check from Ubisoft? In Matt's case he was homeless for a bit and now that he has a house and a kick ass wife he probably wants to stay on the safe side and go along with it. Ya know what I'm saying?
Actually, if you hold up the response/takedown vids of Skallagrim, Metatron and Shardiversity... it's stacking up against the Samurai pretty badly. They wore the heaviest and most cumbersome armor of the three in the 11th century, they didn't have shields so were actually less well protected, their bows appear to be relatively weak (short ranged) and their katana's were slightly heavier.
Starry Skies I liked Skallagrim's the best, but this one was good too. I'm just not as familiar with Metaron yet so there is probably some bias there. But I'm definitely dropping Metatron a sub, good stuff
I think Shadiversity had a more in-depth critique. Some of the inaccuracies of pronunciation in this video are irrelevant to the actual point of Matpat's video, whereas both skall and Shad remained mostly on the topic of realism. Now, I'm not saying that this video doesn't cover historic fact either, but I believe shad and skall were more focused in their approach, using several sources and debunking the arguments step by step. Metatron seemed to focus on what was said in the video specifically, addressing claims chronologically and as swiftly as possible. Which is certainly a valid style, only less in-depth.
One thing I do love about everyone who tore the video apart did it in a way you're supposed to. Not like TH-camrs who just do ad hominem. Skallagrim and Metatron don't attack Mat. They just go into facts. And I love them for it.
Read: that's why they're a bunch of fucking pussies afraid the youtube adpocalypse will snatch them up too even though they have all right to go off on the slimy, fuckfaced weasel in the vid.
Big oof when you realize Mat mostly used historical illustrations for Samurai and pop culture for Vikings and Knights. Can you express your bias more? (well.. he did, by glamorizing the samurai and downgrading the others, but it was rhetorical.)
MatPat is obviously putting Samurai on a pedestal because of "history" channels that spread misinformation, Hollywood movies and Anime and thinks Samurai would win EVEN THOUGH there advantages and disadvantages to the Knights, Samurai and Vikings (and Ubisoft obviously left out a key faction in For Honor, the Chinese. Heck, even the Muslims like the Ottomans and other such Islamic warriors could've worked, cause even THEY lack recognition)
This is really, really impressive. From a historical perspective, you establish yourself as an expert immediately, without a need for credentials - simply by displaying your knowledge.
That might be boring for a lot of people, and MatPat (I love those videos, too!) tends toward a more "common man" approach, but if you're going to debunk a video from a historical perspective, this is the way to do it.
Swedish person here, we were tought in school that a lot of vikings actually chose not to wear armor, or sometimes even clothes for that matter, not because they couldnt afford it, but because it was common for vikings to be quite strong believers of fate, and that which battle they would die on had already been decided, regardless of what anyone did to protect them. If say, the viking was fated to die the battle after the next, what would be the point in wearing armor if you believe you cannot die in a battle you werent fated to die in? And if you were fated to die there, why wear armor to slow you down? In other words, some vikings didnt use armor because of their beliefs, not their financial status. (However, it was also common for those vikings to wear armor anyways for cultural or religous reasons rather than for protection)
@@XiaoMof A false comparison. The term "weeb" specifically means "a person who obsesses over japanese culture". A nazi not only obsesses over German culture, but aggressively tries to destroy other cultures, and with it, other people. Had metatron been a weeb, he would have most likely not given factual information and based his ideas on bias and stereotypes. Which he clearly doesn't. In fact, Matpat's glorification of the samurai in his video is closer to anything a weeb would do.
@Seth Hultkrantz Hi daddy can I have some food? You didn't come back ever since you went to go get cigarettes, oh well. Well be careful because there is a black hole in the cigarettes you smoked. Also please stop playing Mario 64 I'm sick of Mom she keeps stabbing my fingers and plays russian roulette with me. Love Kiaan Hultkrantz P.S. You got a forehead on you like a coffee table.

I was sure you had you objections and you correct at the 1st 50 seconds of your video! Now I'm gonna sit back , relax and hear your thoughts with some beer! Love your videos keep up the good work!!
The only valid point of debate between who would be better is between the Samurai and the European. Keep in mind that "Knights" in the 10th Century were indistinguishable from "Vikings". How did they fare? At the beginning of the 10th Century, a viking raider we know as Rollo was able to gain control of the coastal area of Normandy from the Frankish King. They became the horse-riding Normans and they defeated subsequent viking raiders from Scandinavia. In the 10th Century, the "vikings" established their own kingdom centred at Jorvik (which we know as York): the Danelaw. Later that same century, King Alfred led his men to victory and eventually the English "knights" of the period, the Earls and other armed men, re-conquered England... until the Dane named Cnut conquered England and became King in 1016 -- just after the 10th Century. So, we can conclude that "Knights" and "Vikings" were pretty much equivalent, using the same tactics and the same equipment. The only outlier is the Samurai, who had no contact with northern Europeans.
Broken Wave The Norman Conquest is in the 11th century, and roughly 500 castles were built in Britain immediately after the Conquest in a roughly 30-year span sooo...
Good vid, the one thing no one ever seems to bring up is the use of a shield. Most weapons of the various time period would be known and trained against. Armor that would be used by a knight or samurai would largely be similar throughout the time periods on average. Skill similarly equal. Generally near life long training for both. But the use of a shield would be a key advantage for the knight imo. Not because it is overpowerful. But rather because the samurai more or less did not use them. This means less general experience with and fighting against persons using them. If you don't have experience fighting against an effective weapon or defense system that puts you at a distinct advantage. Of course the samurai would not be ignorant of shields, I'm not saying that. I'm saying they would not have the practical experience through the time periods they existed to counter a shield as well as literally any other existing combat "system" available at the time. This imo gives the knight the slight edge, not a significant one. But a definite slight advantage.
Metatron has said this before, and I will repeat it, Medieval Japanese DID use shields(mainly the rank and file), and samurai would be familiar with them.
Samurai bows were not as powerful as European bows, so they would not penetrate much at all. Vikings did wear a lot of armor and they had some of the best metals in the world at the time. Nah vikings just ran around naked and smacked ppl with their giant di**s.
What kills me is he showed a clip of the FMJ dude from the long sword Vs. Katana video cutting the cabbage with a (really crappy) longsword replica which means he (most likely, if he went so far as to put the clip into his own video) thinks that the “katana vs. longsword” video is factually accurate and not the utter BS that it really is!
exactly I don't get why this guy was so douchey about it? Also, I'm sure certain American can read katakana even if it's only a few. I'm English (you know because not everyone who watches him is American...) and I understand Katakana. it's like he doesn't get what an easter egg is (I'm not calling him a douche just that that comment was douchey)
I like the game theorist, but when you go around saying your videos are extensively researched & they clearly aren't then you have to get called out on it, he is just wrong about all three groups, he just glorified samurais out of personal preference
Great video and i liked that you stayed classy and didn't talk trash all over GT staying on point of the subject on hand... got here on the automatic playlist but I'll be subscribing to you... have a good day dude
4:20 No that isn't a gauntlet either. Gauntlets are a type of armor that protects the hand not the forearm. those are called vambraces, they protect the forearm.
He calls the gauntlet "greaves" infact if you see he does have an arrow pointed to the gauntlet when he says greaves, I have just made a mistake with the screenshot as I took it one second earlier so while still pointing at the vanbrace, and didn't notice in the miniature in the editing software.
Hey Metatron! I just wanted to say that I love your channel & subbed. Maybe slightly off topic(?), but rather than the Knights vs Samurai vs watermelons vs etc, what I'm interested in is how a feudal Japanese army of the Sengoku Period would do against a European army of the same era, say an army lead by Oda Nobunaga/Tokugawa army vs a strong European army ( Spanish? ) of the time. Considering the sheer numbers the Japanese managed to bring to the table, as well as their arquebusiers in conjunction with archers and so forth, I think they'd be a force to be reckoned with. But would they be a challenge for a Spanish army with their tercio and all? Just seems more interesting to place a samurai-esque army in it's prime instead of comparing katana's to longswords all the time. Anyway, what do you think?
TH-cam React Cagayan battles. Google it. Japanese pirates with ex samurai in their ranks attacked 1 spanish ship. Some of them got bombed, some of them boarded the spanish but with no great success because they lost in close combat. Then there were some fighting on land, where spanish guys wiped the floor with them both in gun and close combat.
Japanese horses were more like ponies. a regular foot soldier can outrun a mounted archer. If anything, the Japanese even up to the 16th century never really had cavalry per say but mounted soldiers (like hobelars). Granted the Japanese bow (Yumi) was designed to be shot off of horseback.
Indeed they were like the mongols if i recall correctly in terms of how large their horses were. Which their small size from what i remember reading did favor them in the mountainous areas of japan. Allowing them to get cross paths and things normal size horses wouldn't but from what i seem of the game for honor. Most of it seems to take place or has large wide open fields. So that seems like it wouldn't come into use very much or at all. Rending any edge a smaller horse might have rather moot.
David Ribeiro and boy was it the first or second mongol invasion of japan where the japanese got lucky as fuck. Due to a storm destroying a lot of the ships the mongols and their allies were using.
Storms hit them on both invasion attempts, but I would say the first invasion was were the Japanese were really lucky (altough it might just have been a reconnaisance in force rather than a ful out invasion as the Mongols were known to do that). In the second invasion the samurai had learned from their errors in 1274 and actually held off the Mongol landing for over two months, so I think the invasion would have failed even without the kamikaze.
David Ribeiro and it was around that time they made a sort of stone wall. Well calling it a stone wall might be to fair. Given it was something closer to a pile of rocks gathered together and stack on top of each other. Of course might of taken longer to reach that victory or at least mop up the remains, which mother earth did for the most part..
Hey Skallagim, thank you very much for watching my video :) I still can't get used to the idea of you commenting or watching my content, I still fall of my chair ahah
Looking forward to your video mate
Oh man, I seriously can't wait Skall! We really have inadvertently tag teamed this ^_^ It's like the whole community has come together to promote the truth. I'm getting tingling feelings. . .
when do you think it will be out? your version will be the most interesting to me.
Hi Skall
Holy cow! I just realised! We've got a team made of a modern viking, a modern samurai and a modern knight on TH-cam!
Absolutely Cracking video mate! Oh man I love hearing about the samurai stuff. So good.
Shad, you said that the cavalry was the tipping point on the defeat of the viking, and I completly agree on a war situation. But Matt was talking about a duel (or at least it seemed like it), in that case wouldn't the horse be a disadvantage? Fiore de Liberi talks about how the man on foot is more mobile than the man on the horse
well you did requested him in your latest video to talk about the samurai's equipment in the 11th century and he did a fantastic job
ow and your video about MatPat's historical inaccuracy was great to
Well, with a horse you could just run down someone, if he doesnt have some long weapon
O hello Shad!
"Nudist vikings"? This guy has heard of frostbite, right??
Edit: Many people are also apparently unaware of the advent of quilted armors (gambesons, aketons, etc.) common to the era.
He didn't mean literal nudists
You don't have to be , literally nude, to catch frostbite.
Nonsense odin protect them.

Yeah, but that's totally wrong. Skyrim is *clearly* an accurate recreation of historical Norway. 1:1 scale, of course.
vikings soceity was most built of farming, hunting and trading, though they did raid that wasn´t what they lived on.
if you've watched the series Vikings, it's utter bullshit how they focus completely on raiding and how actual farming is only seen once in the series, which ironically is done on a plot of raided land.
This guy has some sense
Rufei Jesus>Odin
Huggster True
I cringed in the viking section, saying that they were primarily raiders and generally saying they were brainless brutes.
While I do agree that the vikings would likely lose in such a fight, it's not for the reasons that Mat had.
+mandraxhair they did so in the 9th and 10th century. After 1066 no major raid happened anymore.
As gar as I know, Vikings were mere pirates of the norse culture.
Dead Knight they were mostly raiders though but they where also known for being tall and strong
They became members of these countries , being made nobles so that they can protect them from other raids.
+Dead Knight Made them sound like they are orks. For orks tend to be dumb, like to loot and raid things and enjoy a good fight.
I was sooo cringed when The game theorist said their(vikings) weapon were garbage this video is such a relief
@@RedFloyd469 "Not a single person with an intellectually honest thought in their head would ever believe that random remark to begin with. Crude materials and garbage in combat? KNIGHTS WERE NOT SLOW!!!
Jeffrey Gao *when you fall for the bait*
KNIGHTS WERE NOT SLOW
Metatron were to the point and polite the whole way through, but when it came to the claim that "Skyrim go it wrong", the gloves came off! Or rather, the greaves came off, as Matpat would have said...

But even with no general historical knowledge and only common logic, His video on For Honor was a total rubbish.
This would be awesome
I'd love to see that.
It might help to also temper some of the over romanticized Japanese culture. I like Japan, but there is too much love for it in general. It's not like it's the superior culture or anything.
@Michael Terrell II I don't have European superiority. Read my post again without that filter.

Here from Skallagrim's debunking theory and this was a great too. So samurai had possibly the most bulky armor? Very well done. c:
Thank you for coming, you are very welcome here :)
Metatron No problem.
Remember he was specifically talking about 11th century armour though. It was improved later on to be less bulky.
the most bulky but however still not incredibly bulky
Alex Martinezalba Samurai had worst everything. Katana is a fragile and weak weapon that breaks easily so it can't even be used for parrying. Their armor is weak and clunky in comparison to european armor because they didn't use hardened steel nor did they understand how to balance it properly. Their bows are pitifully weak when compared to even older viking bows let alone something like the english longbow. The only reason people think that samurai are badass is because of anime and hollywood. Historically their equipment was just terrible.

"Yeah, but Skyrim is not a province of Scandinavia, mate. They didn't get it wrong, it's another world."
Ha ha, I'm glad somebody else noticed that blooper! MatPat isn't the first to have a go at Skyrim for supposedly "getting Vikings wrong." Even though the fictional race called Nords in the Elder Scrolls games aren't supposed to be Vikings in the first place.
The question is, why DIDN'T he contact any of you? He should know that there are channels like yours if he did research.
julesmaester that is extremely disrespectful to his viewers who wants proper analysis.
Jiho? Ayyyyy chicken. Wonder if you get the reference :D
Thunderstyle I do not, unfortunately. Please tell me
I love MatPat's work and admire the usual quality of his research but this video...omg..!
Eric Coffey IKR I feel the exact same way
Eric Coffey I guess Mat Pats strength is scientific analysis and not historic research that's why it's probably so shocking to some people watching his good videos (including myself) that the For Honor video was so bad.
Eric Coffey I am in the same boat as you
Eric Coffey he went wrong because I am willing to wager his research stemmed from sources he somehow perceived to be credible but had fallen prey to modern poor misconceptions.
I think he went bad awhile back. I stopped watching him after his poorly researched/argued debate between Overwatch and Team Fortress 2.
I suspect he did this video on the quick as a commission work, sponsored by the developers and publishers, so didn't have too much time for proper research. Not defending, just thinking of a likely explanation...
Gonna go watch it now, just to see it all. Got the notification, but not interested in stuff that reeks of sponsored content solely for sales...
Michael Berthelsen it's one.of his worst videos.with errors.everyone could notice, the topic was more fit for gaijin goombah (but no.fucking way ubisoft would.make him so.a promp.video right?) who in fact would have known for sure how wrong matpat is here, especially on the kanji, even.the.editing is.worse tham the average for him, it's like.on.of his old videos from 3 years ago in terms of editing.
p.s. sorry for typos am.on phone
Still sad, as you said it would be easy to debunk this in a matter of hours...
You just know that the 590 dislikes are just game theory fans who think mat pat is right no matter what
exactly. they're much worse on shad's video
Yes that Emoji as one of the people who disliked this video, yes. You are abseloutly right. :p
+DrIvanRadosivic As long as I get to be a Mongolian Invader I'm in
Interesting.
DrIvanRadosivic interesting
They say he kills him with his voice! Shouted him apart!
2:00 he wrote that as a literal easter egg, the game kind.
Tron's not a native speaker, it's reasonably likely he's never heard of the 'easter egg' thing.
I don't know, the Metatron seems reasonably culturally literate. I'm pretty sure he knows what an Easter Egg is.
Rather, I think the point is, 'why are you putting words that say one thing, next to English words that say something else?'

Skyrim is based around Norse fucking culture
I can’t wait for Skall, Shad, and Metatron to be playable in For Honor
MatPat is kinda like the modern media. If he talks about something you know about, you know he's full of s!@#. But as soon as he talks about something you're not too familiar with people somehow believe him.

Also skall :)
I love how everyone ganged up and tore this video a new one
Friendly Mage yeah...it's asshole is ruined
+Blu Soldier Bot
Amazingly, Matt's been able to ignore his video's ruined asshole.
His next video had a segment where he cried real tears from people getting on to him, about how wrong he was.
Is that so? Show me.
Turns out I was wrong. He just thanked haters. He did seem somewhat emotional though. The video is about Undertale it's specifically the WD gaster one. It's a minute long segment right at the beginning.
One thing that people don't think about is also this:
Medieval Europe was in a constant arms race.
Matt Allen Well, thats where he is good at
But its just a theory
Matt Allen he nevers do any research he just pull stuff out his ass all his videos are the same he just lie
Except there is lore ( but you probably were just insulting FNaF just for the sake of it, because everyone just loves to hate that series much to my annoyance ) anyway I think you should go back to Mat's video and read his comment he did do research but... Just read the comment alright.
You mean looking at the fnaf subreddit and making a video about it?
Benjamin Burchett look in reddit will be actual work the guy just pull stuff out his ass
The Trinity has been made... Shad, Snap and The Metatron... It's ok :D
Aldito Hernandez Curiously they made videos for each factions... I really HOPE that MatPat doesn't see it from the bad site of things. That he watches these videos and get info.
I know Shad but who is this Snap guy? Would like to watch his video.
Skallagrim is also going to make a video about it.
AldanFerrox No way... Really? Man, but it just needed 1 video each faction... Also, we're getting the point of bullying... Isn't it?
I enjoy these video to be honest. Even Matt Easton of Schola Gladiatoria hinted at making a video about it. And I think thats good, because these falsehoods spread by the Game Theorists video need to be thoroughly debunked.
I saw this video about five months ago (after seeing Game theory‘s hunger games video, then his for honor video and then Shadiversity‘s video, in which he referes to you) and it got me interested in history. Now I‘m addicted to all kinds of historic content and I just wanted to thank you for that!
Contact Metatron first so he won't be forced to destroy you again lol
"Samurai is the best at everything," "Viking's weapons are garbage," "Poor vikings fight nude."
Wha- I can't... I just... what the hell?
Have you watched any of his vids ?
he is really good when it comes to science and math
but he is shit at history i must say
I admit I've only watched his For Honor video, but if he talks like that in all of his videos, I don't think I will change my opinion on him.
Agree with depressed arab here (nice username), but he is indeed good in science and math theories. This video just happens to be absolute garbage for some reason, but then again, all youtubers make garbage content every now and then.
Rouha when did he say samurai are the best or Vikings fight nude?
People say MatPat is a smart bloke, but he gets so many facts wrong and screws up so many real world theories...smart or a good marketer to look smart?
Honestly he just has a lot of die hard fans in his fanbase who would jump off a bridge if he made a theory saying it was the right thing to do
Hey mate get a frickin masters degree in phycology and neurology and then researching and then writing an essay on it weekly
He's nothing but a good host. He himself does none of his channel's research. He is merely a spokesman. The rest of his crew is most likely to blame.
_Sitzkrieg bro actually watch his channel and GTlive then come back if u r a fan then why r u writing stuff like this
hey metatron! I know you said you were gonna more videos about Asian countries like China, but would you also do a video of the byzantine empire? like how they were different and similar to the western roman empire, in terms of clothing, military equipment and their battle tactics
Oh yeh! byzantine empire, that would be very interesting.
byzantium stronk!
And religion as well.
then great..... then they might add Arab, Turkic factions too.
They go into these issues in depth in some episodes.
knights were not slow.

Good guy Metatron.
You care so much about historic accuracy, you will help others make money just for meticulous love of history.

If a channel makes a video that's so poorly researched it makes me doubt any video the channel makes
Gloin79 true, if I were to use his kind of 'research' I would probably fail my study. xD
^I don't disagree, but when he gets his facts right and sticks with what he truly knows, he is very informative. Not everyone can be perfect.
This is what I worry about with videos like these:

Ravogard Dragovar i'm prettu sure it was on purpose, some of these are basic topics that members needed to know to get their job, there's no way they didn't do it on purpose, even the editing is sloppy compared to their usual.
maybe it's a protest on ubisoft because.they didn't actually want to make the video.but.they forced matpat to? i have no idea.

That video put me off Mat Pat, unsubscribed.
Noah Weisbrod wowooss
2 of the main 3 most people wanted are out, we're waiting on Skallagrim to cover Vikings. I haven't had a chance to watch it but I think Antony Cummins did a video specifically on Kyudo to reply but that may just be ironic timing
he's spreading misinformation, as a guy who calls himself a nerd and a man of science. That would be cool if he admitted his mistakes and acted accordingly, but that's not the case, so what he does is unforgivable.
Great to see historians, hobby or academic (doesn't matter), on TH-cam working together.

The Game theorist knowledge is simply limited to stereotype Video game knowledge.
Which is no knowledge.
Honestly matpat should have just done a video on "which of the three for honor factions, as presented in the game, has the most advantages and would probably win the entire war?" Then any real world facts don't matter at all, as it's all the internal game world stuff, with only a few minor things like catapults and various other siege devices that show up in the game needing out-of-game reference.
when in reality it was more like which side did he want to do more shoddy research on for this biased video

If anyone's interested, MatPat implied in his For Honour stream just now that he's planning to do some kind of followup addressing the criticisms.
That's promising. How did the conversation come up, did someone ask him?
Some of us did, but he didn't reply directly while I was watching. He did, however, mention that something related to the episode was going on in the background.
I met a guy at a HEMA festival in full plate and he was doing backflips.

Ohhhhhhhhh... Snap! Sick burn.
DrTheKay did it exist back then?
I felt that Mathew had gone full Deathbattle on that "battle". Bias doesn't even cover how rigged that fight was.
Panelledsquid same with his overwatch vs tf2 video.
Death Battle is way better than Game Theory.
@@jeffreygao3956 Death Battle does actual research and doesn't pull stuff out of their ass.
@@drakashrakenburgproduction5369 Of course!

"Viking weapons = trash" WTF the great axe seems to be such a fucking amazing weapon to me.
All he would have to do is put "fighting with a bearded axe" in the TH-cam search field to see some videos showing it was more than rudimentary trash. Although I will be honest and say I don't know how far some of these techniques date back, I am sure the Viking who had to rely on it in battle did more than just swing it wildly.
recieve that to the ribs, even if ur wearing chainmail, u might very well break a few bones
nobody used swords in the medieval period anyways
They used spears!
Wood Glue Yeh but it's easy to dodge that SHiT and after 5 heavy slahes with that shitty axe and the user would be tired and exhausted
I remember seing viking riveted armour in a museum in Copenhaguen. I somehow missed the tissue paper section, though.
Lol
"Vikings come from Scandinavia" And shows a picture of the Nordic countries.
By Azura, by Azura, by Azura! It's the Adoring Fan!
Wait... Island, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark aren't Scandinavia?
VicoRotta no
VicoRotta Finland isn’t part of Scandinavia, the greater region including Finland is called Fennoscandia.
Three of which make up Scandinavia
I guess Mat is focusing too much on the "pleasing the large crowd/ paid promoting the game" when it clearly shows that For Honor has many of the things right but fundamentally wrong if it's actually based on real world.
Pearce Aiden shhhhh
I think the problem with MatPat is that there is a ton of false information. Its easily to find articles and books saying that Japan and China were light years ahead of Europe. This is of course false but its easily to be mistaken when this isn't your main field of research. He's much better with science and statistics which is a whole different type of research.
Gallowglass I agree.
TheBayzent Especially right after leaving their isolation period in which they fell behind the rest of the world since they cut off outside contact.
thankgod someone picked up on his comment about skyrim , excellent video man :)
That was SAVAGE. Well done!
Jeez, all he did was make a bad "theory" calm down!
His videos aren't theories they're hypothesis at best, talking out his arse at worst.
Actually, if you hold up the response/takedown vids of Skallagrim,
Metatron and Shardiversity... it's stacking up against the Samurai
pretty badly. They wore the heaviest and most cumbersome armor of the
three in the 11th century, they didn't have shields so were actually
less well protected, their bows appear to be relatively weak (short
ranged) and their katana's were slightly heavier.
I think the word you're looking for is tachi; Katanas weren't invented until 1392.
Knights were not slow.
CrionBL no they werent
Laaninovitsch Knights were not slow.
CrionBL no they actually were fast they could jump are you read any nook you moron?

MatPat just got schooled!
Kingsize Mat not worried
Of the three main debunking videos on matpat's video, I liked yours the best. Maybe because you called out the most and were so straight to the point?
I'm glad to hear that pal
Read: that's why they're a bunch of fucking pussies afraid the youtube adpocalypse will snatch them up too even though they have all right to go off on the slimy, fuckfaced weasel in the vid.
VunderGuy Um no. It's called arguing fallacy with fact, and being respectful, not being a complete jackass like you obviously would be.
@Vunderguy
Let's use Sargon's law, you're projecting yourself here. #rekt
Shad talking about Knights, Snap talking about Vikings and now Met talking about Samurai... The Holy Trinity rises! :D
the whole community is on this
Skallagrim too
That cartwheeling Knight was the raddest thing I saw all weekend. XD
When you make a video on three factions but three historical TH-camrs each corresponding to a faction independently hand your ass back to you.
The real For Honor boss rush.
Nice one.
Big oof when you realize Mat mostly used historical illustrations for Samurai and pop culture for Vikings and Knights. Can you express your bias more? (well.. he did, by glamorizing the samurai and downgrading the others, but it was rhetorical.)
I was sent here from Shadiversity, and I really like how you addressed the topic, you just earned one new subscriber.
Metatron: switch off your phones.
Me: but I'm watching using my-
Metatron: *DID I STUTTER?*
2.3k dislikes are gamers who have no idea or any sort of understanding of medieval history, or just some hardcore Game Theory fans.
Shad, Skallagrim and Metatron; awesome, awesome, awesome.

I was going to call him a weeb but he actually knows what he's talking about so nvm
Apollo and I call all people who love germany alot Nazis!
Well this proves he isn't a weeaboo: th-cam.com/video/UntxiF3qtbg/w-d-xo.html
@@XiaoMof A false comparison.
The term "weeb" specifically means "a person who obsesses over japanese culture".
A nazi not only obsesses over German culture, but aggressively tries to destroy other cultures, and with it, other people.
Had metatron been a weeb, he would have most likely not given factual information and based his ideas on bias and stereotypes. Which he clearly doesn't.
In fact, Matpat's glorification of the samurai in his video is closer to anything a weeb would do.

i came here cause I just saw the episode of The Game Theorists( who would win) and i wanted to hear your opinion.
You said 10th century, the video was set in the 11th century; a little different.
he forgot the knights superior war machines, fortresses, and over all numbers
DestructoCopter Not in the 11th century...
Broken Wave Or in a one-on-one fight, for that matter...
Broken Wave The Norman Conquest is in the 11th century, and roughly 500 castles were built in Britain immediately after the Conquest in a roughly 30-year span sooo...
Alright, this video was WAY better than your other debunking videos. So you're clearly getting better and better.
"Armor that would be used by a knight or samurai would largely be similar throughout the time periods on average."
No... they aren't. They weren't.
Metatron has said this before, and I will repeat it,
Medieval Japanese DID use shields(mainly the rank and file), and samurai would be familiar with them.
@@xaviervega468 yet their shields where quite small and less practical compared to the kite shield
Samurai bows were not as powerful as European bows, so they would not penetrate much at all.
Vikings did wear a lot of armor and they had some of the best metals in the world at the time.
Nah vikings just ran around naked and smacked ppl with their giant di**s.
do you see knights or samurai? lame answer.
Even I could tell that something was wrong with MatPat's video and this was right next to it on the sidebar... so you got a new subscriber.
"Yeah, but Skyrim's not a province of Scandinavia, m8. It's a totally different world."
_petty level: _*_expert_* God I'm loving this video
What kills me is he showed a clip of the FMJ dude from the long sword Vs. Katana video cutting the cabbage with a (really crappy) longsword replica which means he (most likely, if he went so far as to put the clip into his own video) thinks that the “katana vs. longsword” video is factually accurate and not the utter BS that it really is!
I will admit that Mat Pat's video presentation is very humorous.
Maybe it's an easter egg for anyone who can read Japanese? IDK.
That would be his style to be silly. A American would just look at that and brain fart.
exactly I don't get why this guy was so douchey about it? Also, I'm sure certain American can read katakana even if it's only a few. I'm English (you know because not everyone who watches him is American...) and I understand Katakana. it's like he doesn't get what an easter egg is (I'm not calling him a douche just that that comment was douchey)
IoKnight Thank you!
Only weebs can read Katakana. Not average americans.
I like the game theorist, but when you go around saying your videos are extensively researched & they clearly aren't then you have to get called out on it, he is just wrong about all three groups, he just glorified samurais out of personal preference
Exactly
Speaking of armor.... do you think you could link to the agile guy in the plate armor?
the english knight guy was shadiversity.
Turn off my phone? That means I can't watch the video :(
Damn, the amount of brilliance shared between this channel and Shadiversity is utterly stunning.
There were some battles and duels evolving Samurai and Portuguese troops.
You know what he (MatPat) should’ve done? Analysed the suits in the game to see where they’re from and use those as reference points.
Awesome video, always appreciate historical insight.
Smaller even than the steppe poneys of the Mongols, as you wold expect from Island fauna.
David Ribeiro
and boy was it the first or second mongol invasion of japan where the japanese got lucky as fuck.
