    Aren't the Hitokiri basically former executioners? It would kinda make sense why they wear little to no armor, you wouldn't expect the death row inmate to fight back.
    Also I do like the Hitokiri gameplay mainly because it's focused on getting easy executions and in Breach/Dominion Hitokiri is a powerhouser

    • @Shiftinggers
      @Shiftinggers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Basaltar DiosDelBadco executions have a tactical use, especially in Breach. As a Defender a successful execution means a guaranteed -1 Attacker respawn ticket(no revive) and longer Respawn times. Maces don't need strength to be effective, they need speed. Blades make better use of leverage. And then if you can use the momentum and throw another attack while landing on a better position in one fluid motion, well, that can be useful.

    My first impression on seeing this hero was that it felt so out of place. In my mind, Samurai are all about elegance and precision, and this new hero had very LITTLE of those qualities when it came to their weapon. That axe reminds me more of an executioner's axe than a battlefield weapon. However, I learned later that this character has a lot in common with the Lawbringer class for the Knight faction, particularly that both hunt down condemned criminals and bring them to justice.

    • @richhartnell6233
      @richhartnell6233 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I vary much like your description of the samurai as precise and elegant. Out of curiousity how would you describe the knights and Vikings?

  • @stormrhode2330
    @stormrhode2330 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    1. I don't have any problems with blood or rust or dirt blemishing the weapons. I figure the pretext for some starting weapons is that it's a piece of used junk found on the battlefield or a tool often used for something else now being utilized for battle. With this in mind, it makes sense to have them looking worn/dirty.
    2. She's holding the axe properly. Gripping the shaft with a hand nearing the head (wow, the double-entendre) has a couple of practical applications. One, it provides greater weight distribution and less energy expenditure and two, it makes it easier to move the axe quickly if you need to defend or re-position the blade. When striking, you simply choke your grip, giving you that range and a bit of extra leverage and control for your attack. If her hands were farther from the head, I'd say that would be an issue.
    I think the class is pretty cool. I haven't used it (I almost never play the game anymore), but I haven't seen much I don't like about it. I like the aesthetic and the personality behind the character and I think it's an interesting element brought into the game. I agree some of the battle animations are a little goofy and could be more realistic, but I haven't really been bugged by it when playing (at least not yet!).

    I don't know any Japanese, but "Hito Kiri" is referenced in my English translation of Lone Wolf and Cub, where it's supposed to mean "to cut a man with a sword" (Lone Wolf and Cub Omnibus, Vol 2, "Decapitator Asaemon", publisher Dark Horse Manga). The strange thing is that Asaemon has to have the term explained to him, even though cutting people's heads off with a sword is his occupation. As LW&C is supposed to be very accurate as far as the description of Japanese society under the Shogun goes (the story is completely fictional ), maybe the term wasn't in common usage?

    IIRC, the reason they used the double-headed axe as stated in one of the Warrior's Den that went into the character, they chose to use two axe heads to make it more distinct from the Raider's dane axe.

    QUESTION
    I'm a bit confused about samuraï equipment, Metatron.
    Correct me if i'm wrong, but appart from the kanabo, medieval japanese seems to have used mostly piercing (yari, yumi) and slshing (naginata, nodachi) weapons. And now you say they didn't use axes. So, since we're talking of weapons which are poorly to moderately effective against armor, how prominent and effective were armors in the armies?
    I assume it was somehow good, as they (almost) didn't use shields and still has to deal with arrows.

    • @lucanic4328
      @lucanic4328 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well they used axes as well since there are few accounts of such weapons:
      gunbai-militaryhistory.blogspot.com/2017/09/masakari-samurais-war-axe.html?m=1
      Other percussive weapons used by the Samurai:
      gunbai-militaryhistory.blogspot.com/2018/04/kanabou-samurais-mace.html?m=1
      gunbai-militaryhistory.blogspot.com/2018/05/tsuruhashi-samurais-warpick.html?m=1
      Also, some yari had some spearhead intended to be used as percussive weapons:
      pin.it/ifafw47ihyuwo2
      pin.it/ouqqgsdmsbjnpv
      By the way, it is a wrong misconception that spears are not as good as maces against armor; they are much better! Your best option against an armored men is not to attack directly his armor, because it won't hurt him as much especially when rigid protection is involved (like Japanese armor). Swinging a heavy axe or a mace is not ideal for long periods and on top of that you aren't going to deal too much damage to incapacitate a men.
      Your best option is to go for the weakspot, a bleeding wound is way more effective than a mild concussion, and you just need one hit. Spears are nimble, they can be used to aim for the gaps, entangle your enemy's weapon if they are fitted with parrying hooks (as many Japanese spears were) and the shaft could be used to wrestle and knock down your enemy.
      More over, another good solution is to wrestle him to the ground with a dagger.
      But warfare is not about a single duel between armored men; it's about formations and tactics. In this regard, a pike block, a squad of archers or of firearms and cavalry equipped with spear is going to deal extremely well against armored foes.
      Within this context, maces or normal axes aren't well suited as much as polearms.
      Btw to answer your original question, it's complicated but on average the Samurai were always heavily armored at least from the 13th century onward and from the 14th century full body coverage was very common.
      By the 16th century, even the Ashigaru had a good amount of body coverage as well.
      Also, shields saw some usage in Japan:
      gunbai-militaryhistory.blogspot.com/2017/12/tate-tedate-japanese-shields.html?m=1

    The axe grip I actually think it's acurate, if you grab it close to the head it's easier and faster to manipulate, plus, it's easier to block with that grip.
    If you look closely she only uses the axe this way guarding and with the lights/fast attacks, when she does a heavy/slow attack she grips it differently to use more the weight and the range.
    So yeah, I think it's a proper grip if you only have an axe to cover/attack, what do you think?

    • @FalconWindblader
      @FalconWindblader 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the pirouetting part that's problematic. You've a damn long & heavy weapon & would've done massive damage if you just hold the end & swing it hard, yet you chose to grip it near the blade & spin around. you're sacrificing both reach, cutting power & balance just to look flashy, which is stupid.

    Considering that axe is very top-/ heavy and has a lot of momentum, spinning or continuous swinging seems plausible. Just look at Zweihänder.

    • @dreysantillan
      @dreysantillan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but a battle axe in real life is never that heavy as much as the axe in that game, zweihänder is not heavy enough to use a spinning attack, spinning leaves you vulnerable, as you spin, you face your back to the enemy, giving the enemy enough time to go for a strike, or a stab, or anything to incapacitate you

    • @youtubevoice1050
      @youtubevoice1050 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but even dane axes aren't exactly light either. So, continuous swings make sense to better control the momentum. Spinning attacks are, of course, much more situational and risky, but shouldn't be completely dismissed. Especially in a game were diversity of moves is desirable. However, I do agree with Metatron that the fighting style doesn't look great.

    I think the axe is supposed to be really freakin heavy. So the grip makes sense for easier movement of the weapon. And the spins are probably for momentum in the strike.

    I'm sure Ubisoft took inspiration from Japanese paintings before, and I know the axes in those look grossly oversized, even bigger than Hito's axe. While they only have one head traditionally, it's not out of the question to think someone used a double headed axe in Feudal Japan, just like it's not out of the question that Samurai could have dual wielded Katana.

    But... don't MOST of the characters in For Honor not stand a chance against the Knight characters?
    Also, I consider the Hitokiri a cheap character. I play on console, so the fact that she can heavy spam with alternating parry windows is just frustrating to deal with compared to literally anyone else except Shugoki. Even then, Shugoki telegraphs pretty well. Hitokiri's first charge up that is blockable isn't well telegraphed.

    Also, in terms of axes in ancient/medieval Japanese military history, the only one that I know about is the Ono (thanks to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice), and that axe the Hitokiri/Sakura is using looks FAR too big to be an Ono.

    Maybe she holds the handle close to the axe because of the oversized axe head being overweight (of course an axe head that large, especially so thick, would still be too heavy, and would have to be much smaller than depicted, but the fighting style, the way she holds the weapon, might still imply it has something of an overweight axe head (just not as impossibly so, as depicted in the model).

    I think the biggest thing that bugs me about For Honor in general is how wonky some of the weapons look, and how they’re almost all overly huge. A prime example is the Highlander and his Scottish Longsword. The thing isn’t just big, it’s like a Zweihander got some extra layers of steel added. The naming of some of the weapons bugs me too. Like Claymore. I don’t see a basket on that sword Ubi.
