Everyone hated Scrappy, but HB pushed him back then thinking he is small and cute, he sells the show. Now that those kids who grew up hating him are running HB and writing movies... oh boy, Scrappy gets the revenge of the nerds.
@@SwiftNimblefoot "Everyone" must have certainly been a group of people, but *I* never hated Scrappy, & I've met people who also never hated him. There are only 2 cases where I can think of him as annoying on any level; both episodes have an example of him thinking that food is for him when it isn't. He was probably the most annoying early on from 1979 - 1982, but in & after 1983 or so, he was slowly maturing. Really, Scrappy from 1983 - 1989 isn't as high-energy as he was earlier, he even was going into his courage skit in one episode, but then he had second thoughts and ran off. I forgot which episode that's in, but I remember it being a 1984 episode. He had the pint sized warrior attitude at times, but he wasn't as high strung and gung-ho.
Actually, there were ghosts and monsters in the original Scooby-Doo. After the success of the show in the 1960s, Hannah Barbara did dozens of specials, movies, crossovers, continuations, and made plenty of clones of the show. Because it’s Hannah Barbara, they essentially threw shit at the wall, and saw what stuck, and ghosts and monsters did for a while.
The four TV movies in the late 90's/early 2000's showed real ghosts and monsters can work. It just needs the right people. Especially when we saw what Zombie Island gave us.
Ricky Williams That’s true, but I’m talking about the Hannah Barbara ghosts. There was the movie where Shaggy was the next Werewolf for Dracula’s race, because the original Werewolf was on vacation (I know it sounds stupid, but it exists), there was Ghoul School where Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy were camp councilors for a bunch of monsters, and the 13 ghosts of Scooby Doo, where this monster guy had two annoying ghost henchmen. Plus, there’s all of the crossovers that Scooby and Shaggy were in, and I’m pretty sure that they met both Casper the Friendly Ghost and Harry Scary. Apparently, all Hannah Barbara cartoons exist in the same universe. Also, Marvel’s and DC’s universes exist in that same universe too.....and WWE too now
I don't think any of those monster movies with the cast are considered canon. Seems unlikely that a series all about showing how there's nothing supernatural going on would suddenly change to have supernatural stuff happen. Seems to take away from the point of the original show
@@cptseagrave1191 Well, _these_ two live actor movies? I REALLY don't want to consider them canonical, overall. I can however consider the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo series canonical, it's good enough. There's also a Halloween episode from 1983 (give or take a year) that had real monsters but it's a bit too juvenile for me to watch right now.
Smalls Nonya good try at a correction, but the guy who played shaggy in this movie is indeed Matthew Lilliard (who, once more, now voices shaggy in shows).
@@smoothst9303 OMG! How awesome would that be! Old Man Smithers using the souls of all the teens visiting the island to turn himself into Luna Ghost, but this time as a *real* ghost and having *actual* powers instead of relying on gadgets and effects. He would be a much more serious threat to the Mystery Gang than Scrappy at least! Heck, if you remember the poster, his silhouette is on there, front and center, looming over the Mystery Inc Gang and the Gang looking at him with scared faces. Would have tied in better to the promotional material that advertised him as the main villain. Talk about false advertising.
The main problem is that they wanted this to be a PG-13 movie, with Shaggy being a stoner. This is why you have that smoke shot after the "two years later", and the love interest being Mary Jane. They made it PG though to apply to a younger audience, making it too childish for adults yet too scary for kids.
They wanted a hard R, not PG-13. They were going to go all the way, and make it a strong satire, until other similar films bombed hard, so they toned it down. Not sure where the hell you got PG-13 from.
Fun fact: This film was R-rated originally before cutting down scenes to get it a PG. How nice? For more than 15 years, kids have been watching an R rated film and no one knew.
This is why it didn't make any sense; it seemed marketed as an actual PG film and was a big disappointment to me. Even before I watched it I didn't suppose I'd be seeing Scooby doing cartoon hijinks like going behind a thin tree and not showing up on the other side until he wanted to; however, then I watched it in theater... Being 10 years old, _so_ much seemed out of place. Fred's egotistical, Daphne's "done" with being a damsel in distress (OK but why the attitude about it?) and Velma feels ignored because of Fred's egomania. I had no idea why people laughed at the body swap scene with the one liner "Hey! I can look at myself naked!"
They should have just done it; if they tried to focus on satisfying one audience maybe they could have pulled it off, but they don't have the talent required to entertain kids AND please adult fans.
Fun fact: Matthew Lilliard was just a vessel for shaggy’s power. He caused so much chaos that they actually had to write the movie around it. The demons, island, and even Rowan Atkinson were summoned before James Gunn even started writing the script.
I've always thought this was a perfect last episode of the original NC. It starts to be a lot more contemplative like the second wave of reviews. Not only does it say it's an unfunny, bland movie, it addresses WHY it's such a poor reflection of the franchise and how it didn't work in the past, doesn't work now, and never will work in the future. This review was arguably the most complete and utter annihilation of a movie Nostalgia Critic had put out yet, while also focusing on the character's own needs to contemplate the state of his role in life, thus ushering in his new approach to analyzing film. I've always loved the Nostalgia Critic, but this is when he became the voice of reason he is today! And it's all in this review for, of all films, the SCOOBY DOO MOVIE! Hats off to Doug, and I'm so glad the review has continued to go on!
Right exactly- it ushered in all the self-reflective reviews. A.I., The Lorax, Christmas with the Kranks- just to name a few- those were all amazing. I'm so glad they are continuing! It's a great way to end the original run of the NC though.
First Scooby i watched was with Scrappy. When I stumbeld on an old series, I always wondered where he is, it felt kinda empty.. Never knew people disliked Scrappy.
There are a few minor scenes that did get a chuckle out of me such as when Scooby finds the bag he thinks is the hamburgers he ordered and he looks up to the sky and says “Rank Rou” and when Shaggy goes on his monologue on haunted castles and Scooby acts out each of Shaggy’s pointers. The latter is probably the closet to the film being tone with the original cartoons. And it’s a neat reference to the very first episode of the original series “What a Night for a Knight”.
The beginning... I swear, it's so good. I love this part to this day. You don't know how much I, and a bunch of other people, appreciate you. Basically: "I'm the Nostalgia Critic and I have mental breakdowns so you don't have to", as someone in the comment section said.

When I first clicked this, I thought it was going to be a zombie island review. You know one of the 'good' Scooby Doo movies. But this is fine too. Also great opening rant.
Classic Scooby fan who saw the movie in theater (and wasn't impressed by it even then) here: yes, Matthew did do a good job. I don't mind if they put actual monsters in any Scooby Doo movies (it worked for the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo series, IMO) but something about this movie just didn't sit right with me.
Austin Lucas The sequel, even with the supernatural elements, feels more like a real Scooby Doo movie, and despite the AWFUL CGI, I had a good time watching it... The first one I'm unsure if I dislike it or not... And yes I think the actors were well casted.
@TheRichROom Yeah, that's something which makes me feel as if when Scooby Doo got popular again in the 90s they just started writing bad fan fiction for Scooby Doo and called it a day. This doesn't only apply to this movie; the _Blair Witch Project crossover_ (yes, it exists...) is off the charts.
Daphne’s entire story arc in this movie is literally just Daphne: I’m not a damsel in distress Other Characters: Yes you are *Rinse And Repeat 100 Times*
THIS. Looking back as an adult, Daphne's characterisation in the 2002 film coming off the back of the Zombie Island to Cyber Chase era just feels so off, and the female empowerment arc feels VERY forced. Even in Where Are You, Daphne may have been danger-prone but she wasn't useless.
There was a deleted scene in the film where she claims she had been studying martial arts and you see her train break shit but for some reason the director cut the scene out . Kind of strange when it make it more believable and you dont have to take her word for it 😅
You know, if the nostalgia critic ended here like it was originally supposed to, I wouldn’t mind it at all. The review still holds up really well, I remember watching this when I was 11 and I think I might have cried at the ending when I first saw this. Doug walker has had a tremendous impact on my life, and I owe everything to him. He got me interested in film, and started me on my pathway to try and become a director. While I know he’s absolutely despised now, I can’t bring myself to hate him. I cannot call someone “the worst reviewer on TH-cam ever” just because he made one really bad review. For a man that brought me so much joy, I can’t simply turn and hate him. I don’t know maybe it’s because he gives me “nostalgia” but I felt I’ve almost always been there since the beginning. I think I first started watching him in 2008 or 2009. Call me a “fanboy” but I can’t bring myself to hate him like it’s popular to do now. Yes he’s probably a terrible person in real life, I can’t speak much on that. Yes, his reviews now are probably really bad. But, when I re watch this seven years later, I’m reminded on what makes me love film so much. Films, even bad ones like the scooby doo movie, can evoke such strong emotions (even hatred). That opening rant still has me laughing my ass of seven years after the fact.
Was it really in 2016 when he decided to come back and do NC again because he realized nobody cared about his experimental shows? I thought it was a longer time ago.
@@seymourpant Basically Doug was tired of doing Nostalgia Critic videos and wanted to do original stuff. Specially because around the time was when companies were starting go hard on copyright infringment, meaning using copyright material was getting riskier and riskier. So he want to do stuff that only had original material. He tried Demo Reel but that only had like 6 episodes and it was recieved pretty poorly.
I remember seeing this in the theater for the first time. I thought it was a fine movie, up until the fart joke. No lie, my mom SHIELDED my eyes and started RANTING to her husband (quietly, of course) about "HOW DARE THEY resort to this kind of humor in Scooby Doo!" I honestly relate to a good portion of it. But hey, better to live than to complain.
I love how the creators hate Scrappy-Doo so much, they made him a villain at the end of the movie.
That is on Hannah Barbera not Scrappy!!
Everyone hated Scrappy, but HB pushed him back then thinking he is small and cute, he sells the show. Now that those kids who grew up hating him are running HB and writing movies... oh boy, Scrappy gets the revenge of the nerds.
@@SwiftNimblefoot at first he was popular, but that popularity quickly turned into the opposite.
That's BS. Scrappy is *not* supposed to be a villain.

Mr. Original it's reference to The Princess Bride
This reference is Inconceivable!
Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
With Vincent Price yet to boot

@@smoothst9303 OMG! How awesome would that be! Ryan Blanche Understatement
+Tristan Hartup well this movie is before guardians of the Galaxy soooooo
+Endie gaming & Sparta Remixer so what?
+Arvid Sjödin so they made this movie before guardians of the Galaxy so this maybe inspired it?
The main problem is that they wanted this to be a PG-13 movie, with Shaggy being a stoner. This is why you have that smoke shot after the "two years later", and the love interest being Mary Jane. They made it PG though to apply to a younger audience, making it too childish for adults yet too scary for kids.
They wanted a hard R, not PG-13. They were going to go all the way, and make it a strong satire, until other similar films bombed hard, so they toned it down. Not sure where the hell you got PG-13 from.
First 3 minutes I was thinking "Doug, do you need a hug?"
Even I was disgusted that Shaggy said that they should leave Fred and Velma for dead, knowing well that the original Shaggy would never do that.
You’re right the actor of Fred is named Freddie
You don't say?! Whodathunk?!
No shit Sherlock
I just realized that.😆
Quick easy casting
And is married to the actress who did Daphne.
Fun fact: This film was R-rated originally before cutting down scenes to get it a PG. How nice? For more than 15 years, kids have been watching an R rated film and no one knew.
F. N. Lorter Interesting.
How the fuck do you make a fucking kids film rated R and expect audiences to be like "YEAH THIS IS PERFECT!"
Question: WHY was it going to be rated R?
Fun fact: Matthew Lilliard was just a vessel for shaggy’s power. He caused so much chaos that they actually had to write the movie around it. The demons, island, and even Rowan Atkinson were summoned before James Gunn even started writing the script.
Okay the part where scooby punches Fred actually made me laugh out loud
Amen.
Doesn't have to be the last, just one of the first self-reflective ones. The Fury Road episode was similar
Right exactly- it ushered in all the self-reflective reviews. A.I., The Lorax, Christmas with the Kranks- just to name a few- those were all amazing. I'm so glad they are continuing! It's a great way to end the original run of the NC though.
The best one to me is Nostalgia Critic's Review Of The Room! One of the best Reviews of anything of all-time..

Austin Lucas
Well, it was supposed to be a parody movie, with a former R and PG-13 rating and...other things. This movie had a strange history.
Well he is the current voice actor for shaggy
Daphne’s entire story arc in this movie is literally just
Daphne: I’m not a damsel in distress
Other Characters: Yes you are
*Rinse And Repeat 100 Times*
