23:12-24:13 That is one of the most beautiful speeches the Nostalgia Critic ever says that insults a bad movie. And he's right; stories like The Cat in the Hat had well thought morals, beautiful drawings and funny stories had helped shape our childhoods and given us great entertainment and I agree with him when he said when Dr. Seuss got it right, he got it right. And to be honest, The Grinch is the only live action adaptation that I like because it stayed true to the book, despite it having some adult jokes, but the thing I loved most is that Jim Carrey was funny and outstanding in this, whereas The Cat in the Hat doesn't stay true to the original story and has too much adult humor.
Audrey Gisel the wife of Dr. Seuss himself said that she hated this movie so much. That there would be no more live action adaptations of the properties of Dr. Seuss. Thank the lord.
Marina Syndulla Yeah he did. Because Jim Carrey is such a force of personality, and his voice for the Grinch was great too, even if it came across as a semi-Sean Connery type voice, he still made it his own. Although, the designs for the Who's, didn't look right at all, they looked kinda weird. But the dog and the little girl were cute. And, the message was STILL the same as in the original book and the classic animated movie. And, let's NOT forget that they ACTUALLY gave us a reason as to WHY The Grinch hated Christmas! They knew they didn't have to, but did anyways, and did it in a way that made sense. Plus, he's Jim Carrey, he could make almost anything work, dude/ma'am.
The thing about Seuss was that he understood that the extremes most children's material push are actually aren't practical and that moderation is usually the best option.
Poor Sues, he may be a children’s writer, but he is still one of the best writers of all times. May he Rest In Peace… And we can all agree with Critic.

I may be an outlier here... but I actually like this movie more as an adult. I know it is by no means a good Dr. Seuss movie, but the almost meanspiritedness of it gets me chuckling. This feels like an adult swim version of the story and it actually a quite a fun ride now as an adult in a way it wasn't as a kid.
@@matityaloran9157that’s how I feel about it. If you look at it not thinking about Dr Seuss it’s unironically hilarious, but if you look at it as an actual Seuss film it’s freaking awful
Actually, what's cringe isn't the joke itself. If nobody laughed, it would have just ended and everyone would have forgotten it. It's that it gets dragged out in a total of six - yes, six - finger snaps.
You want to know something about trying to make Dr. Seuss adult? His original stories sometimes had very adult topics and were done so subtly that I don't think even adults would catch onto. Yertle the Turtle was about Hitler. The Sneetches was about racism. The Butter Battle Book was about the Cold War.

My teacher showed my 3rd grade class this movie, everyone kinda liked it. I, on the other hand, was absolutely scarred. I had to keep telling myself that it isn't real for the rest of the school day. Then a year or two later my family went to Universal Studios we went to the cat in the hat ride and I was scared that I'd have to go through the same experience again. Thank the lord it wasn't that!
I've watched this review multiple times, and I love Doug's reasoning every single time. It's incredibly deep and nuanced, and can pretty much apply to any bad movie now and in the future.
Jim Carrey was better as the Grinch. While the film itself wasn't completely faithful to the book, it featured a backstory on the Grinch that many people were wondering: "Why does he hate Christmas?" While the book states that no one knows the reason (the narrator in the film says this too, and then the film literally shows the reason he hates Christmas), I thought the backstory was good. I've never actually watched The Cat in the Hat, and I probably never will, but I am a fan of Mike Myers. Well, mostly just his characters of Austin Powers, Shrek, and Wayne Campbell, which are his most popular characters and what he's best known for. Everyone (including Myers himself) have tried to erase Cat in the Hat from their memories. The Love Guru was terrible too, but probably not as bad as this one.
I also liked that we got to see just WHY The Grinch was as much of an asshole as he was. The Grinch, as much of a mean-spirited, grouch as he was, seemed to hate Christmas not so much as he thought it stupid, but because the Whos' were not only saccharine as Hell, but also hypocrites and jerks. (For the most part.) I mean, first Augustus makes fun of his appearance, bullied him for liking Martha and then made everyone laugh at him for shaving his facial hair. (Even. The. Teacher.) Already, that makes him mad. But the thing that angers him the MOST is how selfish, materialistic and greedy every Who had become, and he called them out for their avarice and hypocrisy. Mind you, they weren't entirely so mean-spirited. Cindy and her family, Martha, they didn't like how The Grinch was treated. (The teacher only made a guilty chuckle at The Grinch's expense, so while it was still bad, she can't be judged so harshly.) The Whos' who raised him cared enough to make him a sweater. And Cindy's father, Lou, realized he was wrong and told Augustus off, not to mention the rest of her family realized just how selfish and two-faced they became. I thought the Jim Carrey live-action Grinch handled the explanation rather well, for the most part.
23:11 is the best part of the review. It's like a lesson for people who want to make movies based off beloved childhood classics. Don't take certain source materials for granted. Understand what makes them popular and why people would always go back to them.
It’s really heart-warming when Doug Walker confronts towards to Peter Soulless and Evilina told him he likes the book way better than that awful movie and Walker agrees with her.

I hated this movie, not because of the crude humor or cringeworthy stuff (although it sure didn't help) but because I would put myself in the place of the children in this movie. Imagine being a boy already on thin ice when it comes to following the rules and trying to stay on track, and suddenly a creepy, demonic cat played by Mike Myers waltzes into your life and completely destroys your home, ruining any sort of trust left with your family... I'd fucking cry if I was in that place!
I’d already cry. The movie is already terrifying based on appearance. Like the sets with one standard color and simple building designs may work in a book, but they’re freaking terrifying in real life. Not to mentioning that most people in the world wear odd clothing that I don’t get. It’s one color and it’s scary. That isn’t even getting to the people which also.

@@Einar730 oh. Thx
Her performance in this movie was literally one of the only few good points of the movie itself
The 2018 movie showed that he was forgotten in the orphanage
The Goatman -
I saw it opening weekend. It was a very good movie. Benedict Cumberbatch was a great choice for the Grinch
OSanoBR -
Speak English, dude. You’re bumming me out.
I agree.
(For the most part.)
I mean, first Augustus makes fun of his appearance, bullied him for liking Martha and then made everyone laugh at him for shaving his facial hair. (Even.
That's what I'm doing if I ever become a professional scriptwriter (I want to work at Warner Bros.)

Edited: wow thanks for the likes (:
do you think that it would of ironic if mike myers was played by micheal myers
or the other way around sorry i got them mixed up they have the same names
Jinx. Was.Here. Michael Myers would've made a better Cat in the Hat.
Dan Nigro yea that could of made the cat in the hat less creepy in this movie
Mike Myers really needs to do a Halloween spoof!
Satan's Daughter: "I'm afraid"
NC: "We all are"
Me: We. All. Are.
Just saying,her name is ”evilina”.
Thank you, I tried to remember but I fucking couldn't.
We
All
Are
I know I'm afraid.
Hold me. :(
One of my homework assignments due tonight is to ad a chart to my project, and I am just distracted thinking, "Well the chart says."
10:57: “Pedo smile” and “happy-I-shit-my-pants” 😆
Critic: Amazing, everything you just said was wrong.
Luke Skywalker: I couldn't have said it better myself.
"I'm a super fun differous feline, who's here to make sure that you're feeling fine" It's not so hard!
They needed that extra 30 seconds of screen time
It even has the same number of syllables, well played
When I was younger I thought of “to make sure that you’re in line”
IKR!
Isobel Miller really not hard Mike Myers
When nostalgia critic almost gives up on the movie, after the cat gets hit in the balls, I felt that
Each time I watch one of these reviews now, I think of how interesting it would be to see Doug make an editorial on Green Eggs and Ham. The title could be 'Where Green Eggs and Ham Went Right' or something along those lines.
"But the chart says-"
My headphones: *"Battery low."*
Ha! perfect joke, bravo!
Purrrrfect timeing
Cat: I got nothing. I'm not so good with the rhyming.
*Meanwhile in Heaven*
Dr. Seuss: *slap* Ow! Damn it!
Fitzgerald: What's wrong old sport?
Dr. Seuss: *rubs face* I don't know. I-I think I felt a slap to the face.
You mean.... as in F Scott Fitzgerald
As in f scot Fitzgerald
I'd assume so...

@@supermariofan03 im so glad to have reawakened you for my stupidity
My teacher stopped playing the movie in class.
Lmao I made this comment when I was 11
I guess she cared about your guys education
Really? That's hilarious! what part was the final straw that made your teacher stop playing it?
@@joshuajones3557 It was the dirty hoe part. It was so funny!
@@7evenproductions271 shouldn't a teacher see the movie first before they're going to show it in the class?
@@Jmgjgdjd5 no. This was in 4th grade. someone brought it on dvd.
This is one of the best if not THE BEST Nostalgia Critic review so far. He doesn't just review the movie, he exposes the problems with every bad adaptation of a kids book and gives us a deep meaning of what they trurly are meant to be
"Honey, it was ruined when she bought it"
“All is lost”
Mmm hm, *snap, yea
"All is lost"
When the studio bought the rights to the movie
honey, that reference is problematic
Evilena is one of the best NC characters ever.
She's adorable!
Debatable in my opinion her dad is the best NC character
@@Will-Cube He's the coolest, she's the cutest. Best team :)
What about Bill? Bill is the coolest!
Jonathan Freeman who could forget about *bill* ?
I hated this movie, not because of the crude humor or cringeworthy stuff (although it sure didn't help) but because I would put myself in the place of the children in this movie. Imagine being a boy already on thin ice when it comes to following the rules and trying to stay on track, and suddenly a creepy, demonic cat played by Mike Myers waltzes into your life and completely destroys your home, ruining any sort of trust left with your family... I'd fucking cry if I was in that place!
...
I woud kill him
If I become a director, I would make a Dr Seuss movie that was respectful to the source material.
Cheers mate
