- Install what I would consider to be an upgrade to the stock Tahoe or Yukon over head console with one from a Crew Cab.

Goes through all the trouble to have a sunglass holder. Sunglasses dont fit. Sounds about right. Funniest thing I've seen all week.

Im still a little bitter about it haha. Them sunglasses have fallen on me several times sense that video and every time they fall they not only scare the crap out of me but remind me of my failed attempt.
I did this mod to both my Sierra and my Yukon. I ended up completely disassembling the old and new consoles and swapped the wiring and lights because the Yukon had a slightly different setup with a delayed light. Also added the home link door from a different console. There are a few different interchangeable doors from other trucks like the Chevy Astro and Blazer.
Interesting. What year Yukon had the delayed lights? I have only really messed with the 2000-2002 so the newer 2003-2007's must have them im guessing. I went to a pick and pull lot and also tried some doors from the older GMT400's and they work as well.

This idea is what brought me here. Found the home link buttons in a junkyard 99 tahoe. Gonna try installing them in my 96.

I go to pick an pull lots all the time and some how never seen these overhead consoles. Once I did I knew I needed one haha. It was funny that the glasses didnt fit. I never did test to see if they fit and it was funny they didnt. Its an easy mod and one im going to do on my Yukon as well.
Excellent idea, great video man!!! You engineered the console to fit but of course with Murphy's Law..... the glasses didn't fit. I'm gonna do my wife's Suburban too. Thanks.
Thanks! I went to my local pick and pull to get another one for my Yukon and had no luck finding one in good shape for my Yukon a few days ago. Ill have to drive to the next town over and see if they have any. Its a great mod even if my dang glasses didnt fit haha.

Those sunglass holders are meant for Ray-Ban Aviator style sunglasses. Lol, still looks really nice in the truck though. I'm going to do that to mine. I have an 01 extended cab
Yeah I figured that out the hard way. Either way I agree it looks nice up there and I plan on putting one in my Yukon as well.
Looks exactly like a GMT400 consoles. To make the glasses fit I cut my console backing to give me that extra 1/2 inch.
Yeah I installed a console in my 97 Tahoe when I first bough it. For some reason I never knew the GMT800's had them as well. Thats not a bad idea about cutting out the backing not only to get a little more room but also the head liner will be better for the glasses to press up against than the plastic console.
@@PostalRedneck yep, fits my ESS glasses just fine and the headliner is a nice soft backing.

Glad to have helped. Yeah them glasses are kinda scratched and they have been glued back together. I think its time to retire them.
My 98 2d tahoe has the same overhead, and it has just the sunglasses holder and cd holder, but it has the garage door buttond like your stock unit
From what I understand the 1994-1999 overhead consoles will fit in the 2000-2006. Ill have to keep my eyes out for a 2 door to see what they look like. I know the S-10's had a long and short overhead console but the short ones were only in trucks that had sun roofs.

LOL I took the long road to get there as well. That pair of shades have been though some rough times. They have been glued back together countless times.
I found the roof center console made of wood. With all the wood trim for dash and doors. From the local junkyard.

Ive since quit but back in the day i used the sunglasses 😎 compartment as my blunt holder. You can fit a lot of sunglasses in there, but definitely not all types My aviators fit good.
Im surprised you can put one of these in a nbs. They are pretty standard in the obs

I have a 2004 and 1/2 Silverado 3500. I was thinking about doing this to the pickup crew cab, but was that weird outline? It makes me think I would have to take the headliner. The overhead console came from and put it make it fit the truck somehow I don't know. Thanks for sharing
It would be a fair amount of work changing out the whole headliner as they have the wiring for the interior and heat controls built into them. You would have to find a truck with the same options as well as same color interior. Not only that but the connection that goes down the A pillar requires you to remove a lot of the dash. I think I would just deal with the weird outline from the old overhead if you think this is a upgrade you are considering.
one question for the 2003 gmt800s with the jump seat could the lower dash Plastic be swapped with the one that had the indash cupholders and three 12v outlets from 1999/2002?
Im not 100% positive but from what I understand all the lowers and be swapped out so I dont see why not.
Thankfully mine has that already I’m just wondering how I can take advantage to 3D print or search for any ideas
Yeah Im sure there are some things you can put up there. I have see a few people with the DIC or switches where the heater controls go.

I'll put the inside camera of a 3 cams dashcam system into the door opener switch. It'll have a good view of all the inside area.
That would be a good spot to mount the camera. I have a camera in my off road truck in about that location as well.
my 96 ext cab doesnt have an overhead console....did the obs all come w the subframe option to add it? or ?
Im not 100% sure but I think every GMT800 came with them other than the regular cab trucks. I think you would be wise to see if you cant pull your head liner down a little to see if its there. Otherwise if you do cut and its not there you will have to come up with a way to make it work of live with a hole in your head liner.

What’s the name and size of the screw for the roof center console? Mine don’t have one and is just hanging.
Not sure its just a Philips head screw. I would just try to install a few different sizes you have laying around the house. Shoot even a dry wall screw might work.

They have which I got lucky n found at pick n pull to was the home link but for the longer console u just pop the old one it’s got right now with the big single button and then they make one that has the home link with the 3 built in buttons tht u can slap right in the same spot can mostly find them in gmt400 chevys 95-98 gmt800 don’t really come with those much very rare to see
I recall seeing one before. I think it was in an S-10 though. If you could get one with home link and fit it in that would be a nice option to have.
@@PostalRedneck I got mind out of a suburban I believe a 97-98 somewhere around tht year but the obs style forsure has them it’s just very very rare to come across cuz most just have the one you have but got mine working n works great just needs 12v n Gnd would run it to ign tho just in case someone breaks the window n try’s to open ur garage if your truck sits outside lot of mfs do that shit

Form what I have researched the single cab is the only one without the cutouts for it unfortunately.
You can put your bass adjustment knob in there so it’s hidden
That would be a good spot for it. I had a passenger once turn mine all the way up and almost blow my subwoofer in a car I owned once. Having it hidden would have prevented that.

From what I have herd any GMT800 except for a regular cab pickup or if you have a sun roof you should have the bracket under your headliner for this console.
I guess you shoulda did a test fit to see if your glasses fit before you did all that custom interior fabrication 😂😂
I guess I learned a lesson haha. I just thought sun glass holders would hold sunglasses. It was funny though.
cut the top of the plastic out but not enough to mess up the structural integrity of the console door, then your glasses should clear the console and touch the headliner.
Years ago I think I did just that in my 1997 Tahoe. When I put on in my Yukon I plan on doing that so I can fit bigger glasses in them.

I installed it into my 2001 Tahoe but from what I understand any 2000-2006 have the previsions other than the regular cabs.

The bigger console came factory in my 99 2door Tahoe.
I have a 97 4 door tahoe and I had to install the larger one in that as well years ago.

I just watched this whole tutorial and realized I also have a sunroof 😔
You can get the rear section of the overhead console , it has room for glasses , and having both front and rear sections is better than the one piece anyway , as having a sunroof and both sections of console is better , and since only rear pasengers can see the DVD screen , you can remove it and mod the rear section for extra storage
