    Great video as always. I have a question about balance. Doesn't this device throw the balance of the cam off? Even if you counterbalanced, I would assume the cam is balanced with the weight protruding at high rpm versus in the low rpm position? Obviously you've somehow addressed this, but I am curious.

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Minimal material is removed for the weight and overall balance is not impacted.

    • @danp29
      @danp29 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Balance probably doesn't matter much, within reason, for a camshaft. The lobes are already going to keep it unbalanced, add to that valves spring pressure through the lifter onto the cam is going to add probably more side load to it than the centrifugal force would.

  • @observingrogue7652
    @observingrogue7652 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is very impressive, and someone else asked a question about what I was also concerned about, and you answered it, the roller not being fully supported, across it's surface, is not an issue, but there is still something, that saddens me.
    You mentioned this technology, is not available for Sportster models, so this would include Buell models as well, mainly the XB family. I have yet to disassemble a Buell Blast engine, or seen a video of a full disassembly, but, I doubt this technology is available for a Blast.
    Is it because the camshafts are too small in diameter, for those engines, and no metal is strong enough for that moving part, and the camshaft itself, at that size? Or it's just not possible, because there is no room for a counterweight?
    I guess, now, I have to research if a starter motor upgrade, exists for Buell blasts, a starter motor, that is stronger, and more efficient, because I am increasing the displacement, from 492cc, to 600cc, and I never thought about how hard that would be, on the stock starter motor. I also hope, if an upgrade exists, it's American made, because I want to support my country.
    Well, you have a great invention. I will also look at your site, for anything I could use, for my Blast. I thank you and your company for innovating.

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RoyalSilver&Gold The problem is that those cams are just too short to accommodate the Easy Start mechanism. It's a 5 lb bag!

    • @observingrogue7652
      @observingrogue7652 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohh. I took a good look at the Sportser cam, you had in your left hand. I was thinking maybe the mechanism can be shortened, like a shorter seesaw, positioned into the cam gear, like a cave, and the counterweight made bigger, by wrapping around the cam shaft a little, like a crescent, but can see, there is simply not enough room.....but great news, I found a starter motor for Buell Blasts, stronger then stock, more efficient, and made in the U.S., CompuFire Gen III Starter Motor - 53883

    I have never hold any of these in my hand.
    Maybe that should answer my question:
    What in the mechanism keeps the trigger in it's sleeping position?
    Is it spring loaded, or is there a secret in geometry?
    If you solved that by a geometric trick, well, then i am really curius.
    I hope it is possible to understand what i am trying to say.

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a slight spring load that keeps the trigger above the base circle when the engine is not running.

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Excellent question!
      We were concerned about this during the development of the EZ Start cams, but it turned out not to be a problem.
      First of all, the roller is still supported because the open space is not the full width of the roller. It doesn't just fall into a hole, or have to skip over one.
      Keep in mind also that the EZ start trigger, and the open space it leaves when it's retracted, are on the heal of the cam. There is virtually no pressure on the roller at that point because the valve is fully closed.
      We introduced the EZ Start cams in 2009 and here is is 2014. In 5 years we have not had a single warranty issue with this. We sell a LOT of cams, so in addition to our testing that we talked about in the video, there are many thousands of cams out there that have run untold numbers of miles.
      Hope this puts your mind at ease!

      You said you have an S&S engine. Some S&S cylinder heads are machined to accept our electric or mechanical compression releases, but many are not. If you call our tech line at 608-627-8324 they can help you figure out if yours are. If your heads are not machined for S&S Compression releases, you should be able to make your engine start easier with a cam with more duration. Our tech guys can help you with that too!

    My 2013 FLHX is at 50k miles and I plan to install S&S 551cams, new tappets, bearings and tensioners next winter. Do I need the EZ start cams? Doesn't the H-D 103 already have ACR?

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't absolutely need the Easy Start cams, but they will save a lot of wear and tare on you starter. Yes, you have ACR which is adequate for a stock cam. The 551 cams are pretty short duration resulting in higher cylinder pressure, which is why they make such good torque. We still recommend the Easy Start cams. You will have to calibrate your EFI system with a cam install, and most Flash tuners allow you to shut off the ACR electronically if it causes any problems.
