I love the Bulwark and its wonderful cast of characters. Oh yes, and by the way, I am a lifelong natural born Leftie who came out of an Evangelical Republican clan. Sarah is always so much fun to listen to. She speaks fact, experience and paradox, all wrapped up in honesty, I'm a big fan, even after I called her a coward over her comments on the Biden debate. My husband is pro-Trump. He thinks I’m crazy for supporting Harris. When I ask him anything about current events, he knows nothing. The funny thing is that when we met 45 years ago, I knew very little about current events or politics and he had been a political science major for a couple years.

Is he a Republican or a Trumpy?
Probably thinks Trump is a really good business man, eh? You might talk to him about the fact that he ran a casino into the ground -- and casinos pretty much print money. Also, had he taken his daddy's $400 million and just invested it in an index fund, he would be a real billionaire many times over and far wealthier than he is now. So he basically pissed away his inheritance. Then ask him why he thinks Trump is a good business man.

I have seen multiple reports about hundreds of Republican women calling election offices in red states, asking if their husbands are 'able to see how I voted'. I believe that this group is greatly underrepresented in the polls. Women are hearing about the suffering and deaths happening in red states, and they are pssed too.

They try to engage but we tell them that we won’t let politics destroy our relationships. Politicians will come and go. They will not come visit you in the hospital. They will not take care of your kids when you are sick or bring groceries when you are struggling. Hold on to your relationships at all cost. Don’t let politics rob you of your loved ones.

He was literally about 3 or 4 cubes away from where I sat. I remember him as quiet and focused. I interacted with his manager in some of my day-to-day project work. It was fun until the online services went bye bye. Anyway, I smile when I see Reid's name because of how small the world really is, and how fast time passes.

Sarah, you don’t need machine learning, and it may never become reliable enough. In qualitative psychology research, people are trained to be reliable coders, who can also flag unusual answers. I worked as a coder on a study of assertiveness vs aggressiveness, and one of the ways we trained was to catch tone of voice. It’s called inter-observer reliability.

Sarah Longwell and Tim Miller of The Bulwark are my two favorite conservative commentators/strategists. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool liberal (indeed, I scorn Reagan's time in office for ruining the work FDR did for us), so I disagree with most of their perspectives regarding welfare and national security and whatnot.
Buuuuut, they are modern conservatives, so they're socially liberal, as it is the tenor of our time. I used to think a gay republican was an oxymoron, but it's just that the old school republicans are too tied to their evangelicalism to get with the times. I found out that one can be a conservative while also treating others like human beings, and that's what drew me to them.
When this election's over, I can't wait for people like Sarah and Tim to resurrect true policy conservatism while dropping the xenophobia. I love arguing about policy with people, but it's hard to do so if they're truly a bigot.

Gemini 1.5 Pro via a Gemini Advanced subscription has a 1 or 2 million token context window. A lot of what she wants to do could be done with an off-the shelf (MM)LLM product. Just need to be able to upload really big documents.
But some sort of GenAI-powered, special-purpose app for analyzing qualitative data at scale seems like a good idea -- summaries and quotes, sentiment analysis, and you could have some basic stuff built in like a corpus concordancer.
Also, Sarah is quite a nerd. 😊

"I believe people like me" That's what makes polarization and cmpletely different narratives, even reality. If someone can insert whatever lie or attitude into that group, it will become that group's reality. A group that ignores evidence (and rules, empathy, ethics, consistency, etc) will have much more flexibility and power. The resulting tribal beliefs will be impervious to correction from outside the echo chamber.

The piece about using AI as a front facing persuasive tool kind of scared me a little. I agree with Sarah and her usage of it a bit more than what Aria had pitched. AI is a tool and what someone deems as good, another can deem it as bad. Good and bad are often subjective based on a lot of factors. Who will decide is good and to what extent? AI, in my opinion (just an opinion, not stating it as fact), is great for learning, advancing and imagining. Using AI as a front facing persuasive tool feels like a line too close to brainwashing potentially and like Sarah said it might breed more distrust and negatives than benefits. Again, this is just an opinion. I am not claiming I am super knowledgable, these are just my apprehensions.

Sarah you need to post this interview on The Bulwark, your audience is so much bigger.
Reason: This is the absolute BEST discussion on political focus groups ever.
I suggest cutting all Reid & Co’s waffle - just keep Sarah’s remarks as a Ted Talk. Perfection.
