I don't want to minimize your negative feelings, I just wanted to acknowledge that you have built a great community. This platform is so tricky with the potential legal issues. The things that Ren went through with Sick Boi show no one is exempt from fine print bullshit. You add value and shine a spotlight on artists you respect. There is no negative to the content you produce. Try to remember that.
Hang in there! You're such a thoughtful, considerate guy, it's a shame you would be treated harshly. I don't understand why some channels have so much trouble when others of much lower quality seem to have no issues at all and don't bother pausing or fading the videos at all. TH-cam needs to straighten out the issue. The recording labels should be thankful for the free publicity the artists are getting, not throwing up impediments.
Thank you. To steel man their case, I think there are many reactors who do the bare minimum, so they set their striking threshold rather low, but it's an overcorrection in my case, imo
One suggestion: if you receive a reaction request to a band or artist that you haven’t reacted to previously, is to see if their are other reactions to that song or performance on TH-cam ( and just watch the first 5-10 seconds to see if the reactor used any kind of masking). If there aren’t any other reactions then I would be cautious about doing that reaction. Also, have you considered starting a Patreon channel, like so many other TH-cam reactors do?
Definitely something I will be doing from now on... Thanks for the suggestion I'm considering a Patreon as well, I only worry that I've announced this site and don't want to create more confusion. Maybe it's still worth it, what do you think?
@@KansaSCaymanS that is good advice but there are lots of reactors who use a filter all the time so they don't hassle with it at all. That of course gets the video through but not as enjoyable to watch especially when it is as a matter of course.
I don't plan on masking my videos often. What I plan to do is see what other reactors are doing with the same song and judge based on a sampling. Hi Harriet, just read David's email ;)
@@Sohum I have no doubt you will put your brilliance to work and thread the stupid needle reactors are forced to navigate. PS: The El Macombo venue in Toronto is notorious for blocking on SRV's set there as you found out with Texas Flood. And most people want to see those performances.
I subscribed to the mailing list. And I will share your channel in the Renegade community and urge as many as possible to seek it out. I love all your Ren reactions. From the first time I found your channel you’re one of my favorites. Sadly I don’t have time to follow more than your reactions to Ren, I have a busy life. I hope everything will work out fine. Wishing you the very best, Sohum! 🥰
Certain labels and artists are strike happy. Best to just not do those. Avoid Sony, Amuse, Toys Factory, artists like Babymetal, Maximum the Hormone all of them will happily strike channels
Oh, No, Sohum. Sorry to hear that. Some of the other reactors use transparency or some kind of filters to cover over the video and pause often to avoid the copyright strike. Not sure if that will help. Best of puck to you.
Thank you Nancy. I think I'll use filters selectively... Pausing can be a bit complicated because it can take away from the quality of my reaction and your experience
I hear your worry but let me ask you this channel has been going for how long and how many strikes did you get before this one? Try not to worry too much. You'll be ok and if you can't do a request of mine I understand man.. I'm here to have fun and hopefully show the 60's 70's and more. Please stay safe
On and off since 2023, but this is my first strike. It feels like walking a minefield with limited means to detect the mines before they explode, to use a barbaric analogy haha. Thanks
That's anything but nice to hear, of course. Sony, Warner and Amuse are the 3 I can think of right away that are among those that can quickly become dangerous for the existence of a channel. A topic that will never stop and will probably always end to the disadvantage of the ‘small’ (in comparison) reaction channels. I understand why these companies do it, but how they deal with it is certainly debatable. Because you have a good point in that your videos contain your own work, even if it's based on other people's material. And the fact that this is also a kind of free promotion for the artists they have under contract has unfortunately not yet been realized by a some in their craving for more money. :( _____________________ 「 _"Our rock never dies ever. An existential threat for sure. I agree, their copyright process is faulty and overly punitive. I totally see the debate/grey area. But wherever the line is, they too often overstep it
@@Sohum Absolutely. I mean, there are companies & bands out there that use channels like yours to their advantage instead of shooting against them. The positive examples are there! Take Electric Callboy for example, who actively offer to get in touch with them if one of your videos about them is blocked. THEY will take care that it gets unblocked because they know that the reach of YT can be gigantic. It's just really sad.
I posted one video one time several years ago, and soon after, I received a copyright strike with a message from TH-cam letting me know that if I ever receive another copyright strike (NOT TWO more, but ANY other, EVER), my channel would be removed. I never posted another video on here since.
Jesus. Glad they loosened up a little. I read that TH-cam could actually be FAR more lenient with us creators and give is even more than 3 chances, but alas here we are
So sorry to hear this has happened to you! I really enjoy your channel and thoughtful reactions. I have subscribed to the mailing list, but hope you don't need to resort to that.
TH-cam is a monopoly and this story is pretty common.. Yeah I know another reactor went through this. The hardest thing is the shadow ban from what I hear... I'm not going anywhere.. I requested my last song for the month need to wait for SSI
Hey Sohum. I hate you are having to deal with this ridiculousness. I agree, you should not be struck, but it's so hard to fight big corps. Keep your head up. You have a great pool of supporters. I imagine most, if not all, will subscribe to the mailing list. Keep up the reactions if you can (especially The Warning 😆), The Warning Army is behind you I'm sure!!
Disputing a copyright claim is always risky. Once you do that, the copyright holder only has two choices: relinquish their claim (unlikely IMO) or issue a takedown request which always results in a strike per YT policy. It's essentially forcing the hand of the party with all of the power. I would highly suggest never disputing a claim going forward. The whole "fair use" thing is very complex because not all countries have a similar concept in their copyright laws. Even if you were in the right about fair use the only solution would be to litigate, which I can't imagine would ever be feasible for any small channel.
That's really good advice to be honest. I think forgoing disputes may be the path forward... I would say 75% of disputes get rejected, but the upside from the 25 is not worth the strike... It's just so hard to accurately risk assess because I know it's also possible to be struck even without disputing Yeah... no thanks to litigation, that's a battle for the supreme court here in the US, not me haha
While unsettling this is very common among reactors. Watch other reactions and maybe reach out to others but there are all these little tricks that they use that avoid getting copyrights. Does it compromise your work, yes. But you alone are not being targeted. This effects everyone and you have to find the right balance that works for you. Good Luck.
Thanks, I've reached out to a handful with no responses yet, but I'll continue the search for information... It's a tricky balance between pausing for commentary and actually HEARING the music. I do my best now to deliver my reactions as authentically as I can without being a pause machine... I still don't want to compromise on that, but I'll have to think of something going forward.
👋Sohum . I hate having a strike over your head and I agree with other commenters about the ridiculous situation from both TH-cam and the copyrighters attitude. I hea what you are saying. However, Japan does not have a codified "fair use" statute like America or most of the West. You have to be careful and make sure you aren't applying one jurisdiction's laws in a different jurisdiction.
@Sohum Band-Maid and Nemo are on smaller labels, and Band-Maid is now self managed and probably have not pledged their royalties against an advance, so the bands themselves probably have alot more control over these issues.
I have only known Band-Maid's label to strike reactions in one instance, when their Collab with The Warning was improperly filmed live in Japan before the song was officially released, which was a peculiar situation because the copyright had not even been registered yet.
