25 years old here. I was always interested in computers as a teen however I gave up everything to pursue a business and economics degree in college. Now I’m self studying maths and programming I am getting into hacking this year never let anyone tell you what you can not do. As long as you have fun do what you want to do so that you have no regrets you only live once.
That “Practice first, then theory” was totally spot on. After years of CS theory in uni I felt this weird feeling of not really knowing whats going on. Then had to learn by myself everything again by just practicing, and now “Practice first” has become my motto too. Practice is the only way to test our assumptions about reality. As you said, the failure rate is incredibly hard, and therefore mental straining. Something I still need to get used to. However, this also means that when things do work out, you get this deep sense of relief. For that split second you managed to have a somewhat decent model of a small portion of the world that contains you. That, in my opinion, is the essence of Hacking. Its such a warm feeling. Thank you Alisa, from the UK. I’ve been following you for several years now, used to be on Twitter, but deleted it. I’m a Web developer but I love assembly.. can’t explain why, I just LOVE it… I love bits.. I don’t find challenge in high level coding. I work full time, so trying to learn on weekends and evenings. You are inspiration to me. I started playing with networking scanning … nmap and the like… but it is not scratching my itch… I want to sit in my room on my own and read assembly but I have to do other languages, Java, python, php etc because it earns me a living. I want to quit my job and just do assembly .
Thank you for laying out the mental, emotional, and physical parts of the spaghettified rollercoaster of learning. While I am studying and doing cybersecurity, I think of all of the error correcting that has taught me the most. Being around others that are doing the same things helped me tremendously as well.

I've been learning hacking for about 2 years, I started at 16 (I'm 18 now), being constant, perseverant and focusing day by day I managed to get my first job as a Pentester at 17, over time I became interested in vulnerabilities in low level systems and I met you, no doubt for this field requires a lot of willpower, effort, dedication and discipline, thanks for sharing!
"You don't have to team up" This! It's been pushed down my throat throughout my career that I needed to "work in a team" that "teamwork makes the dream work". Uggh. And that you need as for help from a "goto person". Especially if you're a woman. I've always thought this was bullshit. It cultivates a sense of dependency, that you can't solve things on your own, perform critical thinking etc.. I left my last job and struck out on my own. Personality-wise I'm a lone wolf - don't work well in a group/"pack". Alisa, you are so right. You don't need anyone's "help" to be in this line of work and be successful. You'll have to interact at one point with people, other teams or not, depending on the level "hacking". If you have a gang of cybercriminals on your back, don't hesitate to ask for help.
It's true, even people who are into this from 2000-era, they too feel like they lack some knowledge in some parts, no one can be into everything, you gotta find what attracts you and dive deep into it.

As a 40 year old career changer, transitioning into cybersecurity and development (background: technical military career for 8 yrs, then SAP consultant with over time taken over project management duties too. So "hands-on SAP/IT project management") I can confirm that "you are never too old to learn something new and completely change your field of work!
Burnout is the worst nightmare because you usually don't notice it and when you do it might be already too late. Also, people who perform any types of physical activities have better mental performance and endurance then the people that don't. Take care of your body and your body will take care of you.
that is literally the secret key my friend, i see so many ppl who only work on the computer and neglect their body. stay active and focus on your breathing is the best advice i can give.

Hacking seems it's a set of mind. Computer wise, you have to start learning or at least comprehending a programming language, learn some network computing, and if you want to be more than a hacker, you'll have to actually learn programming to understand an OS. Basically you need softerware and hardware knowledge. Then if you want you can build your own computer. People make a big fuss about hacking, it's a cool term for younglings the moment they hear it, more to it when they see movies or stories about it. How to start in as a hacker, the same way you start in as a doctor, you go to school...😂 How do you start as a mechanic? You buy or procure the books related to mechanics, and you still have to know some maths, and to comprehend what you read. Is there physics in computing? There is.
