  • Follow us as we hike the Grand Canyon from Rim to Rim. On this trip we started on the north rim and hiked to the south rim, making a little detour to Ribbon Falls! The hike ended up being just over 26 miles and took us 11 hours (lapse time). We had a blast!

    Thanks for the video. It's not only full of good info, but reaffirms my intent to do this hike before I turn 70 in 2023. I have hiked down the north rim and the south. Guess just need to connect the 2 dots :) thanks again

    How did you train?

    • @trailandtravel
      @trailandtravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did full body weight training 45-60minutes 3-4x a week and 2 hikes, one shorter and one long one. I would say that it did this weekly for 2-3 months before the hike

    BEAUTIFUL! In May of 1972, I hiked down to the Colorado River on the South rim and back up the next day. I spent the night down by the river. When I got back up to the top, I was pooped. An awesome experience in my youth. I was 19 at the time.

    Hi there, new to your channel. I solo hiked the R2R this past May, wasn’t it amazing! I went from south bright angel up the north rim. My husband and I moved to St George about a year and a half ago, we love it here so much!! I look forward to watching your videos and who knows maybe we will run into each other on trail. Stay safe and happy trails

    Well done and kudos to you and your dad for completing this challenging hike! You do an excellent job of stressing training in your video and comments. Many people fail to adequately train and get in trouble. I just completed my second hike there a couple of weeks ago. It was supposed to be the same route that you hiked. Unfortunately, heavy snowfall on the North Rim and damage on the North Kaibab Trail has kept this route closed. We adapted our plans accordingly by hiking down the South Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch and then up Bright Angel. It was my second time for hiking down to the river and back. The lemonade was great! The trip up was difficult and complicated by several hikers in distress. The temperature was 96 degrees F and we found a hiker collapsed along the trail just past the River Rest House. It took my buddy and I four hours to get her safely in the hands of a ranger at Indian Gardens. I took all of her pack weight and gave her my trekking poles. She was taken into the ranger station and rested before hiking out the next day. She shipped my trekking poles back to me after she returned to her home. It should be noted that 2 other hikers were also taken in at the ranger station down there on the same day. The National Park Service conducts many rescues every year and fatalities are not uncommon. Attempting to day hike like this is strongly discouraged by NPS. The keys to success are training, proper nutrition, and hydration with electrolytes as you mentioned. I've got my reservations on the North Rim for next May for my rim to rim. I'll be celebrating my 70th birthday. I live in the Pacific Northwest and hike frequently and train diligently. So cool that your dad did the hike with you! High five to both of you!

      thank you! I think a lot of people bit off more they can chew with this hike. Especially those not comfortable with the climate of the south west. Good luck with your R2R hike next year!

      We stayed the night at the north rim camp ground oct 14th. The 15th is the last day the north rim is open. We planned it this way on purpose! My husband drove to the south rim while we hiked and shuttled us back that evening.

    Good morning from the Great State of Texas. I am starting to do day hikes and eventually do a rim to rim of the Grand Canyon. Although I better get started as I am now 60 years old. I enjoyed this video a lot. What kind of food/cooking utensils did you take on this hike? What trail did you use? What kind of animals/snakes did you see? Thank you for your video. Have fun and be safe .

      That's awesome! Rim to Rim is definitely a big hike. Id get as much training is as you can before you do it! We just did this hike in one day. It took us 11 hours. For that reason we didn't bring any cooking or camping gear. But I brought plenty of salty and sugary snack and some jerky for protein. Much of the food I brought I didn't use but I would rather pack too much than not enough. We saw deer small rodents and birds. I didn't see any snakes along the way just lizards. We started at North Kaibab Trail head on the north side and ended at the bright angel trail head on the south side. Im glad you enjoyed watching. Happy Trails!

      So then what kind of food did you take for this trip. Since I am new to day hikes I m still learning. Did you take sandwiches?

    • @trailandtravel
      @trailandtravel  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I took jerky, chips, crackers, cliff bars, candy and probably a few other things. when I hike I don't eat a whole lot but its better to have more food than you think you need, especially on a hike like this.

    Excellent job, and what a fantastic Daddy-Daughter adventure! I started running that route with my daughter, on her 16th birthday and my 52nd. We do it as an XC run, so no poles, and no walking. We kept doing it on our birthdays, 5yrs in a row. I started doing it solo after that, and sometimes twice a year. She joined me again, mid-Aug '22, on our birthdays, for her 6th, and my 9th. I returned the weekend before you guys were there, and ran my 10th. I ran it again a few weeks ago, to celebrate my 60th, and will run it again in mid-Oct. Love it there!!
    GPS watches don't work that great in the Canyon. Actual mileage, trailhead-to-trailhead, is 24, and about 5,500' of vert. Distances from the NR Trailhead: Supai Rest & Tunnel 2.25. Manzanita Rest 5.25 Cottonwood CG 7.25 Phantom 14.5 From Phantom, it's 9.5mi to the top of the Bright Angel Trail on the South Rim. It's about 2mi from Phantom to River Delta Rest, and about 7.5mi to the top from there. Of course it's 4.5mi to the top from Havasupai Garden (formerly Indian Garden).
