Congratulations on your amazing hike! Four days after you did this hike I completed my first rim2rim at 66 years old :). It was my first hike of over 20 miles in my life and like you I'm very proud of myself for going through with it! I hiked down the South Kaibab and up the North Kaibab. I'm not gonna lie, the last 5 miles was tough and I too was hallucinating a little. Luckily my wife was there to drive us to our hotel in Kanab Utah an hour and a half away :).
Your channel is so underrated! Can’t believe the treks you do solo and at night w weather conditions. So impressive I need to find friends that would push me like your videos do. Thanks for the effort and sharing
I can't imagine being at the Grand Canyon and hiking in the dark and not bieng able to see the amazing beauty around you. What an accomplishment though! Way to go!
I got to see a lot of it on the way to the south side! The only way to complete the rim to rim to rim is to hike at least partially in the dark. Next year I’m thinking south rim to north, that way I can all the beauty on south Kaibab! Thank you!
Well done another enjoyable video. I often watch hiking videos on trails that we are considering doing ourselves to get a sense of what’s involved and I feel like your video did that for us and love the comments about what you’re experiencing, difficult areas and things to consider. Not sure we’re gonna be as ambitious as you were, but we are going to do it soon. Thanks again and look forward to the next video.
This hike actually made me emotional. Memories flooding back as a Boy Scout backpacking all over the Southern California mountains and Yosemite as well. Which I watched just before this one. Keep hiking and vlogging Erica. Love it!
at 13:25 when you try to capture the solar eclipse, you can actually see the shape of the sun obstructed by the moon captured in the lens flare. The bright spot of blue shape that looks like a crescent moon just right of the main sun flare. So you kind of did! Great vid :)
What you did - the Rim to Rim to Rim, AND the way you did it, is absolutely incredible. What an inspiration for the rest of us. This hike is still on my bucket list
Thank you so much! Ive gotten a lot of mixed comments on this hike. I have a great time even though the tough times. Im looking forward to doing South Kaibab to North Kaibab in October!
Ok, YOU ROCK! I like how you explain your preparations, your emotions, and true expectations throughout your hikes. So refreshing to hear/see original content w/o the hype and drama other content creators post. Keep up the great work!
I randomly stumbled across this video while looking for information on hiking in the GC for the first time. I simply had to watch the entire video and feel so inspired now to go hiking in GC but also just inspired to see a female solo hiker achieve something that is beyond amazing and scary. Couldn't help but had to clap for you as you reached the end of the trail !!
I've only listened/watched this for about 10 minutes and this is the first time I've seen any of your videos. You're very good at this...the information in live footage and the narration are really good. Hope you're still doing it and having fun...stay safe.
@@trailandtravel Finally finished watching it...life interrupted me. You're insane for hiking that at night...but that is one heck of an accomplishment. Great job...and great bravery. Definitely subscribed and ready to watch more.
There is some really nice scenery on the SK. Hopefully you'll schedule it so that you see it in the daylight sometime. The detour to Ribbon Falls isn't very long and Ribbon Falls is quite pretty, and a nice spot to sit and rest. Congratulations on a great hike and on your accomplishment.
Yes I plan on doing south Kaibab to north next year! I did the detour to ribbon falls on my north rim to south rim hike last year, it was so beautiful. The only reason I didn’t do it this year was pure mileage. 50 miles already seemed like a lot to do, I didn’t want to add a detour. But I’ll definitely be visiting ribbon falls again next year when I do south to north!

This is amazing. And on my birthday! I am hoping to spend my 40th birthday in 1.5 years at the Canyon. Not sure if I can do rim to rim, but hoping to see as much of it as I can. Certainly not rim to rim to rim. You're incredible!
@ClaySTL I totally understand that, I think the majority of people who visit the Grand Canyon have that mentality. But there is something so special about hiking across it!
@ClaySTL the early start definitely help. Otherwise you are hiking the biggest climbs in the heat of the day, which is brutal! If you can I’d recommend getting a 3L water bladder that you can fill up instead of the frozen water bottles, it will take up a lot less space and you can refill at the water taps (as long as they are on, another thing to check on before you go). I understand your worry with hiking in the dark, but if you have a good headlamp you’ll be fine. And most likely you won’t be alone!
Nice. Early in the video you mentioned your mileage and time. Most people will probably try to call "BS" but I know better. I've seen you do 4.2 miles uphill in 95 degree weather in an about 90 minutes. I'm fortunate to have survived it. LOL
Lol I consider myself a decent hiker. I also tracked on strava and posted my stats later on in the video. Heat is usually my nemesis when I hike, I do much better when it’s cool.
When I saw a video of someone doing r2r2r the first time I was 🤯🤯🤯. I did it with a bailout option after NK but knew walking up NK I’d switch around and keep going. It is a fantastic hike in cool weather. I’ve done 8 trips this last year to GC, r2r, r2r2r and r2river2r are just great challenges in an amazing place.
Thank you! I wore a pair of highly cushioned running shoes, which I typically don't hike in. I felt like they were necessary for this type of milage. Trust me my feet were in rough shape after this! lol
@@trailandtravel yes! This is what I try to relay to others. Right foot, left foot, breathe. You know you're living when that's all you're mind processes.
I left NK on the 14th and was climbing out the 15th. We definitely would have passed each other and probably had a chat. I can’t imagine there were many other solo hike climbing out of NK on the 15th, I didn’t see anyone else hiking north through the night! Thank you for stopping and chatting with me, my interactions with other hikers really helped me through those last few miles!
Yes, we chatted. I asked you about your hike and you said you were on the last of your solo R3. I was so impressed how well you looked. The last 2 miles of the north rim is hard, as you know. Great video.
I see at 39:30 ish your setup at Mathers campground. Do you have video or some details that you can share regarding your camping gear I see that one of your duffel bags had a tag on it. I assume you were able to get your camping gear shuttled to Mather's campground or to the south rim lodge? I must have watched your video about a dozen times already as I am working on the logistics for 4 for this adventure. I'm planning late September early October. My wife and friend want to do the rim to rim to rim But they also want to take it all in visit the waterfall I'm hoping I could do the adventure within three to four days. I've shared your video with a quite a few of my friends awesome content. Thank you.
th-cam.com/video/XjPslSypEAc/w-d-xo.html Here is the link to my video where I talk about the logistics of doing rim to rim to rim. Yes I got my duffle bag shuttled across from north rim to south and back the next day. This adventure definitely takes a lot of planning! I have also done ribbon falls on a previous trip (th-cam.com/video/5olmTzZMgbs/w-d-xo.html). It's beautiful I highly recommend, it will only add a mile(ish) to your hike. As far as gear I packed as if I was going to camp on the south rim, I brought many of the items that I typically take backpacking. Tent, Sleeping Bag, pad, inflatable pillow, cook set + Fuel, extra food, electrolytes, power bank + cords, extra clothes + socks. I think that was pretty much it. If you're planning on backpacking it I could try to pack light. The more weight you carry the more difficult the elevation gain and loss will be.I also have videos where I pack for backpacking trips, that may be helpful to give you an ideal of my gear set up. (th-cam.com/video/u_pta4yTCoI/w-d-xo.html). I hope this was helpful! Good Luck on your trip!
Wow! You are amazing. So brave to hike by herself and super strong to be able to endure all of those miles! God bless. What an incredible journey. I am so happy to be on the journey with you. I am hoping to be able to visit GC this year.
Awe, thanks you so much. It was an amazing journey! Thank you for following along with me. I hope you get to visit the Grand Canyon it’s truly incredible!
Cottonwood camp ground? I've R2R, and R2R2R I've have never experienced the numbers of people you had. It seems almost every clip had people in it...congrats you rocked it (1/100k ever?).
back then I hiked in a pair of Altra lone peak 6s, now I hike in the Altra Olympus 5s. In this video I hiked in my running shoes, new balance with lots of cushion. I felt like they would be more comfortable and supportive for my feet for this kind of milage and I so grateful I did. I would have been in a lot of pain if I tried to do this in my lone peak 6s, they just don't have the support for the mileage I did. Thanks for watching!
What are the tube item I see most smart prepared hikers are wearing for before I make my dream trip there??Is it for oxygen or water. appreciate any answers on this item I see most are caring when they put it to their mouth I'm wondering if it's for oxygen or water. Appreciate any answers from you all my friends.
@ Smart. I will add this to my supply's when I get to do this dream hike after winter.Loved to see how one can enjoy solo like I do for loving life & the gift of as I do every week get to walk in the forest by were I call home .Thank You.👉✊🇺🇸
Great video! Inspiring and informative along with the fantastic scenery of the canyon. The tracks you saw could not have been from a dinosaur as all the rock layers that form the canyon walls are no younger than paleozoic in age, which pre-dates the age of dinosaurs.
They are 313 million year old tracks of some kind of reptile in the Manakacha Formation it has been determined. Noticed in 2016 by a geologist leading some students on a hike on this trail
By solo I mean I wasn’t with anyone, I was by myself! Yea there were other people on the trail but I wasn’t hiking with any of them. This year there were far less people on the trail than last year when I did this hike. It was very different.
@@trailandtravel What city are you in? I did a lot of climbing: Mt. Washington three times, Mt. Madison twice, Grand Canyon three times, and a few more.
Idk.. lol going up the north rim after 40+ miles on my legs was pretty dang challenging! I’m definitely going south Kaibab to north rim next year! I want an actual view of south Kaibab!
I don't understand why you would do rim to rim to rim, only to hike a big part of it in the dark. You missed out on the views on the second leg of the trip. I guess it was just an endurance feat, but I sure wouldn't have done it this way. What's the point of hiking the Grand Canyon if not to see it?!
This was the second time that I had hiked rim to rim. I did get to a lot of the beauty in the Grand Canyon and there was only an 8 mile section of this trail that I didn't get to see. I plan on doing rim to rim again this year from south to north so I get to see this section. I don't think most people could do this hike even if they tried. So Im really proud of this accomplishment despite your reaction. Have you ever done this hike before?
Great job. That being said, hiking the larger part in the dark somewhat defeats the purpose of hiking the Grand Canyon and the spectacular views it offers. I believe you have the capacity completing an R2R2R (starting from the south rim), within 20 hours, doing the larger part of the hike in daylight; hiking early June). I composed a playlist of POV videos covering all the major trails in the grand canyon: th-cam.com/play/PL9C-kwDdihd75ejgoe-3PrnuO7fIOp0Mv.html Cheers.
Thank you. I actually hiked the larger part during the day. There was only a 8 mile stretch on south Kaibab that I didn’t get to experience in the light. This was my second time hiking rim to rim. I’ve been surprised with all the people who have had something to say about me doing part of the hike in the dark. lol i think that it the only way to cover this much mileage is one go is to hike in the dark. I am planning on doing R2R south Kaibab to north rim this fall - mid October. So I can experience that part of the trail I missed. I was really proud of this hike and what I was able to accomplish in such a short period of time! Thanks for watching!
@@trailandtravel Sure. You can look into the link I provided above, for complete POV videos showing how I managed the time hiking the Grand Canyon. Admittedly , it does require some trail running to complete most of the distance in daylight. Cheers.

It’s Cottonwood Campground. And Manzanita comes before you hit Cottonwood when descending from North Rim.
Oops thanks for clearing that up!
This is amazing. And on my birthday! I am hoping to spend my 40th birthday in 1.5 years at the Canyon. Not sure if I can do rim to rim, but hoping to see as much of it as I can. Certainly not rim to rim to rim. You're incredible!
Thank you so much. I hope you have an amazing time visiting the Grand Canyon, it’s quite an experience!
In that situation absolutely! Any water is better than none!
That’s amazing! It’s fun to hear from people who have also accomplished this hike! I’m looking to do south to north next year!
So awesome! Congrats! 🎉 What kind of shoes did you wear? My feet would’ve been wrecked
Thank you! I wore a pair of highly cushioned running shoes, which I typically don't hike in. I felt like they were necessary for this type of milage. Trust me my feet were in rough shape after this! lol
This is one bad ass trip. Good job and thanks for sharing!
Thank you, It was amazing! Thanks for watching!
It's wild how quick the miles go in the dark.
so true, they fly by what all you're focused on is putting one foot in front of the other!
@@trailandtravel yes! This is what I try to relay to others. Right foot, left foot, breathe. You know you're living when that's all you're mind processes.
Great video!
Thank you!!
Well done... that is a massive hike. What day did you hike it? I was hiking down from NK on Oct 15 and may have seen and had a brief chat with you.
@@fwilly8787 Well it was great to meet you! Thanks for watching!
How did you train?
If you have a link to it, or a printable or something anything. Thanks
I am making a video this week that will talk more about my training and the logistics of this hike! Be sure to catch that video!
THX! You are awesome!!!
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed it!
Enjoyed your video!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. How did you filter the river water to drink?
I have a 1 liter water filter by Katadyn. I use it all the time it’s great!
Thank you.
th-cam.com/video/XjPslSypEAc/w-d-xo.html
Here is the link to my video where I talk about the logistics of doing rim to rim to rim.
Bravo !respect mademoiselle..
Thank you! It was a lot of work, but so amazing!
Flippin rockstar!
Thank you!
love the video. I've always wanted to hike rim to rim. Do you have to pull any permits for this hike?
Thank you! No you don’t have to get permits for the hike. Just the campsites if you backpack it.
Good job!
Thank you!
Amazing hike, great video, have a few buddies planning this hike 1 direction next year. What did you film with? GoPro? Phone? Camera?
Thank you! I used a GoPro 10 to film it! I just upgraded to the GoPro 12 and it’s so much better! Thanks for watching!
wow 😮
Yeah it was a big hike!
Cottonwood camp ground? I've R2R, and R2R2R I've have never experienced the numbers of people you had. It seems almost every clip had people in it...congrats you rocked it (1/100k ever?).
I always seem to experience so many people on this trail! Its always a surprise to me!
you are amazing
Thank you!
Nice job
Thank you!
Great video
Thank you!
Great rim job!
😂😂😂
You hiked the Grand Canyon at night !!!! 😮. NO WAY 😅
lol yep, it was a bit scary but I did it! 🙌🏽
How do you do all these adventure solo! Much respect!
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy!
What kind of hiking shoes are you using? I have total respect for you.
back then I hiked in a pair of Altra lone peak 6s, now I hike in the Altra Olympus 5s.
You should put in for the lottery at Phantom Ranch, and then hike in the daytime when you can see everything.
I would love to do that next year!
It a camel back for water! Just an efficient way to drink water while you hike!
Thanks for watching! And thank you for informing me about the tracks, I wasn’t sure what there were but they were pretty neat!
They are 313 million year old tracks of some kind of reptile in the Manakacha Formation it has been determined. Noticed in 2016 by a geologist leading some students on a hike on this trail
That's AMAZING!
What week in October did you do this?
It was the 15th in 2023.
How many miles is that
It was just over 50 miles!
Wow
I know right!? 😅
You weren’t really solo were you? I’ve heard the trail is pretty densely populated.
By solo I mean I wasn’t with anyone, I was by myself! Yea there were other people on the trail but I wasn’t hiking with any of them. This year there were far less people on the trail than last year when I did this hike. It was very different.
I did it solo in 2 days alone. It almost killed me, The last half mile I was hallucinating
This hike is no joke! I was hallucinating for the last few miles. lol.
@@trailandtravel What city are you in? I did a lot of climbing: Mt. Washington three times, Mt. Madison twice, Grand Canyon three times, and a few more.
Hi
I made the rim to rim trek on 10/14 and 15. I was doing the world record for oldest man crossing on foot. I would love to contact you.
Wow that's amazing! congrats!!
How do you only have 5k subs?!
I will take that as a compliment! thank you! My channel is slowly picking up speed! thank you for watching, I hope you subscribe! 😉
@@trailandtravel oh girl it absolutely is! I binged a few videos and subbed the same day I found your channel. Glad you’re getting some momentum.
Start on the south rim if you want an even bigger challenge!
Idk.. lol going up the north rim after 40+ miles on my legs was pretty dang challenging! I’m definitely going south Kaibab to north rim next year! I want an actual view of south Kaibab!
10:27
thanks for watching!
Wish you did not put music in the background. Rather hear the real sounds
I completely understand. I feel like the music really helps build and support the story of my experience. Thanks for your input.
I composed a playlist of POV videos covering all the major trails in the grand canyon: th-cam.com/play/PL9C-kwDdihd75ejgoe-3PrnuO7fIOp0Mv.html
Cheers.
@@trailandtravel You should be proud of this hike. It is quite an achievement. Cheers.
@@RubiHammer thank you!
@@trailandtravel Sure. You can look into the link I provided above, for complete POV videos showing how I managed the time hiking the Grand Canyon. Admittedly , it does require some trail running to complete most of the distance in daylight. Cheers.
@@RubiHammer I see, I haven't quite got into trail running yet. but maybe in the near future! thanks again!
Also you don’t even have a dog!! Daaang
Not yet, I love dogs though. Hoping to get one soon!
