    Since everyone is asking the same question in the comments, in the last turn I could NOT have played a Year of Plenty (+2) to get a city. I already played a knight that turn and you can only play 1 development card per turn.

      @@hjelsethak To be fair though, the win was pretty far-fetched in the opening 30 turns, a big part of the win was due to the other 3 making big mistakes that to a point, levelled the playing field for blue to then look 'correct' with his early prediction.. He is correct, but it was a lucky call by him in my opinion.

    Great energy. Seeing the starting positions, you clearly had the winning position from the get go. If people don't realize this and you'll table talk over them, it's a win. The solution is: don't be susceptible to table talk. If I would hear someone table talking the one player first, and then another the next few turns, you know that they are up to something and they are prepared to do anything to win. On another note, blue was kinda hopeless from the beginning having no ore and wheat. Since everyone was convinced after 5 was rolled so much and he built lots of roads and you clearly had success table talking him, he was out. Red relied on meagre numbers. Orange was in somewhat the same position as you but had the worse starting position and that cutoff in the beginning really hurt him.

      Well said! Thanks for the analysis!

  • @jesscool1991
    @jesscool1991 5 ปีที่แล้ว +124

    So I was Orange in the game. Achilles. Few thoughts:
    1. I saw the map and immediately understood that it was a win for the guy going first. Although, you played well, no denying that.
    2. I agree that my mistake was to not pay attention in the start to what resources you have exactly. I had just hoped that you didn't have exactly the perfect 6 cards required. But you had. Also, I don't know if I completely agree with your strategy initially to hold on to the road until you get the perfect 6 cards. Seems risky. If someone rolls a 7 and steals brick. Also, it was obvious that I was going for the wheat port asap. So you wouldn't be fooling me by not using the road.
    3. My internet got cut off for roughly 5 or more minutes. And it seemed like the game completely turned on its head by the time I came back. The bot made a useless road and citied up on the wrong settlement. It was actually the most critical moment in the game for me, lol.
    I really don't want to sound salty. You definitely played a great game. And your analysis was spot on.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Hello! Glad to see you here in the comments. I thought you played very well. Here's my response though.
      1. I agree 1st position was in a strong spot, but I quickly fell behind in the beginning. I was not robbed a lot in the midgame, especially by you (orange) and red. This lead to me accelerating a lot and being able to eventually take largest army. If it was truly a recognized easy win for 1st position, then I think I would've and should've been robbed a lot more.
      2. I used to always also play my roads immediately but now I don't. Somone rolling a 7, choosing to steal from me, AND stealing the brick when I'm at 5 cards (20%) is very conditional. Holding the road not only conceals my intentions but gives me information (where everyone is going) and options (Potential road building/YoP). I held the road not necessarily just to cut you off, but to evaluate the situation first. In high level play, it's rare to see someone commit a road towards a race. Most people hold and wait for the 6 card play (road settlement) and do it in a single turn.
      3. I agree it was really sad to see the AI take over for you and make the wrong decisions. I wish that didn't happen. However, I'd like to point out that upgrading the 5/9/10 over the 8/3 had no effect on the game since you got the city immediately afterward. No 8 or 3's hit in the rotation where you were gone. In fact, you even got an extra card from upgrading 5/9/10 first because the 9 wheat hit. With that being said, losing out on the road and not being able to choose to play the knight was unfortunate.
      Good Game! See you at the next tournament!

    • @jesscool1991
      @jesscool1991 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@DyLightedCatan Good points. And I can see why you felt like holding the road (the 20% chance thing partially convinced me). However, let me explain why I decided to build a road there.
      It was not completely a mistake from my POV, even if I had kept track of cards. When you had 5 cards, you were robbed once. And you lost the wheat. Then, no more resources for you until you robbed blue and got a brick. Then, when I rolled a 9, you got a wheat. Now, you have the perfect 6. But would I know this if I had kept perfect track of your cards? All I know from my side is that you were robbed once and you robbed once. When you were robbed, if they had taken anything other than a wheat, then you wouldn't have the perfect 6. More so, you robbed exactly a brick. Blue had 3 wood and 4 brick at that time. So, for you to have the perfect 6 at that point, the probability was (1/5)*(4/7), which is roughly 11% chance.
      Now, I have 8 cards in hand. Also, I am betting everything on the wheat port. Should I not build my road when there's just a 11% chance that you have the perfect 6? If it means that I just lose a road in the process, that's absolutely fine. I think it was the right choice by me. However, I agree that I hadn't paid complete attention to the cards you had, which is always a mistake. But, having played the game enough, I've developed an intuition for these kind of things. My thought process would have been as follows. "He got robbed and he robbed blue. Maybe he might have double roads but not the perfect 6. So, let me make sure he doesn't build double roads. And maybe building a road might scare him off to build roads elsewhere."
      All I'm trying to do is to defend my decision to build the road. Good game :)

      @jesscool1991 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I love this game, and how it's all about probabilities and words "maybe."

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@jesscool1991 Really well-done explanation. I didn't think about you not being able to see what cards were stolen. It makes a lot more sense why you built the road. With that being said, you only have 5 cards! I held a road and I'm on high wheat too. It's very dangerous to commit a road in this situation. It's also not super likely to 7 out in your situation. You don't have to worry about getting robbed either since I'm in a much better spot than you are - shouldn't be getting targeted this early. I personally would hold the road especially if I know the other person next to me held their road too.

    • @jesscool1991
      @jesscool1991 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DyLightedCatan I completely agree. I should have taken the brick from the bank and then waited. There still is the chance of you blocking me with a double road. However, that is not likely. Thank you for appreciating the explanation. I like to analyse everything to the deepest level, haha.

    To be fair to Orange at 7:14 tracking your cards would have only made your play here a possiblity not a sure thing because you got the second brick from the steal on blue and lost 1 card on the steal from red.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really strong point! The cards were shuffled because of the 7. However, orange should've been aware I held my road and predicted that I had intentions to get on the spot. Then he could probe at what people have to see how close I am to the settlement. Regardless, good point!

  • @Catanimal720
    @Catanimal720 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think Blue should've started on the 6-5-12 instead of the 6-5-11... It seems like a small thing, but they didn't really need 7 points of sheep, and starting with a wheat in hand for an expansion settlement and needing one less road to get to the 9-12 could really accelerate their game... Getting quick wheat access and a 3-1 port would be really useful... After that I don't think the brick port is even that necessary... Their wood-brick ratio is pretty close to 1-1, so you don't really want to trade in too much brick that can be paired with the wood anyways... Instead maybe focus on upgrading or expanding towards the middle, to eventually connect... Could've taken the 10-3-11 from you, instead of 2-3 roads to get to the brick port... The 10-3-11 is both 3-1 port fuel to city up, and an intermediary for connecting; not to mention it hurts your game... Not to make this episode all about Blue, just some subtle mistakes I think they made... You still played really well (aside from forgetting your knight 2 straight turns)... We'll blame the new site for that... But yeah well played by you, and good commitment to largest army, still going for knights even when Red got to 5 and you only had 1 played... I suppose you need at least 2 VPs at that point even if you don't end up with army, so you might as well start fishing for at least 1 more, but instead of just that you were committed to get to 6 knights before they played even 1 more, so kudos there... You don't back down from a knight battle easily...

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he didn't want it as other cards (like the +2 roads or the Monopol) would be much better in the early game and the vp is like a "dead" card till the end of game.
      But I'm not sure about that and I'm neither a professional player nor have played the game often.

      Viel Glück You are completely correct. In the early game vp cards are usually the worst card you can get because it’s useless until you get to 9 vp. A knight or a different ability card is much better because you can use it to start your momentum for the rest of the game.

    • @Nightenstaff
      @Nightenstaff 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not OP, but I used to play Settlers in a competitive setting. Table talk, even aggressive table talk, for the first half of the game is very normal. Everyone points out all the different ways everyone else is going to win. Some people try to make friends, point out enemies, or just downplay their own position. It's expected. The last fourth of a game is usually played in complete silence. Trading all but stops. Everyone is aware that you are either positioned to win or positioned to Kingmake. Most players at high level won't Kingmake on purpose. The mood goes from joking and joyous to somber very quickly. When I was at the North American Finals the trophies given out were wolves in sheep's clothing -- very fitting for how Settlers is played.

    • @CodornaPrince
      @CodornaPrince 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From my experience, the more casual the game is, the less table talk is tolerated. In a casual game with your family all this point making might be annoying, but in a full competitive environment good players actually listen to these points because others might be on to something they didn't notice or think of. Still, I think you can cross a line and annoy the others even in this kind of game.
      But as a rule of thumb, people who get too annoyed by table talk are the ones who just want to enjoy the game in peace, not trying too hard to win.
      From my experience, knowing how far you can go with table talking according to the environment is a skill on it's own.
