I've had bad internet for days and I'm psyched to finally get to watch this video! It's still cold af where I am, so I'm living vicariously through you. Your set up is awesome
Very cool. I had a close call last week we had a cold snap that took my water down to 52f. All survived but always a good idea to maintain a minimum water temp of 60f. In early spring and late fall I run a heater to be sure but something had crawled on the power strip switching them off. Now I have guards over the switches! I found that dual wall polycarbonate makes a great cover. White gravel helps to view your darker colored stock. You might want to consider the Bamboo or slotted fencing as a cover as well. It offers partial shading and a large bug/animal barrier while keeping water cooler in the sun.
I am doing a similar setup with netting to avoid dragonflies and frogs in my summer tubs, but have not found the time or motivation to actually set it up, hopefully this week!
The Guppies going into the tubs looked great. I can't wait to see the results. For breakfast, I had 2 eggs, Vegan Sausage and a couple of cups of delicious coffee. Happy Memorial Day.
There is a sturdy mesh with 1/4" x 1/4" squares usually available at local hardware stores. It's very strong but relatively easy to bend, which is ideal for making a large arch (barrel vault) over your ponds. The arch would keep the dragon flys away from the water and provide lots of room for your plants to grow. Because it's very strong it will maintain it's shape, which could make the arched tops tilt open to access the ponds easier. Basically It would look and work similar to a BBQ lid.
After watch your video make me want to upgrade my outdoor pond too 😂 the common problems in outdoor pond is, while summer always had algae problem and the water evaporate too much. The algae problem can be solved with tannin (blackwater) but the evaporation can't. and i need to top it up every three days lol
you might use a couple more 2 x 2 across the top of the pond. That would raise your netting up some more. Thus (oh yeah - I used the word thus) keeping dragon fly butts out of there
Definitely grabbing a snack & drink for this video🍪☕. Any information on how the rainy weather will effect the water in these out door tub systems? Does it effect the PH levels?
@@MichaelsFishRoom thank you I am definitely going to try it out. Have never done a pond before but you made it look easy. I am going to try a butterfly type netting for the aliens.
Michael's Fish Room I’ve had some white cloud minnows outside for over a month doing amazing! And just moved some guppies out! I ended up finding hundreds of tadpole babies in one of my outdoor tanks today! No idea where they coulda have come from other than some random toad or frog strolling on by??!
Hey, Michael! I dug out a flower box and tomorrow I'm gonna put in a pond liner. Figure it should be about 110 gallons and make a good summer home for my Shubunkins. You could try putting some 2X4s between the pond rim and the plastic mesh to "pitch a tent" and give that mesh some support in the middle. Just a suggestion.
Hay bro I wouldnt bother with the painting, just seems to be wasted effort and cost. Truly who is going to see it and realy think the worse for it. Another great vid. and as a vet myself I thankyou for your thoughts and kind words. Cheers and keep on fishing
Ponds looking good and you picked some real winners to stock it with Mike, the. mutts have a high factor of awesomeness and I will be watching their progress with great interest. Just curious, how come no filtration of any kind? Hope your enjoying the weekend.
Wow. I think you set a personal record for bloopers. I had to go back for a refill on the snack. (Chex mix) Speaking of pond pests, do you have much trouble with cats or raccoons?
hi Michael it's me your fan from Iran some guys here tell me I cant breed guppies and plecos in the same tank because they eat fries and they are soo aggressive and I don't know much about pleco if you tell me and I could breed guppies and pleco here there will be more profit for me thank you
Hello fan from Iran! I do it sometimes and have not seen a problem. But, for me the issue is catching the plecos with all the java moss and stuff in the way! Good luck!
Mike, I would let the pipe white it blends in with the house also the black paint will fade and chip then you'll have spotted pipes. There's your excuse not to paint them.
Yeeeaaah, I think you’re a leeetle tired. Lol! Tanks look great! Not sure the netting is high enough above the water, those bigger aliens have pretty long tails. Very pretty gups! Coffee ☕️ and a Bearclaw

LOL You're not a dumbass, you know more than me about fish, and I'M a dumbass... oh, wait... lol just kidding... anyways, yeah, looks like that netting cover should work in keeping the Dragonflies out, and I don't know about the mosquito problem there, but here in So. Cal, they can be pretty plentiful, but since guppies are a form of mosquito fish, well, let's just say that when I had my pond going (Goldfish and Guppies), Mosquitoes didn't stand a chance! You can always just do a wildlife pond just for the Dragonflies, just fill it up with water and some dirt, toss some Waterlilies, Bamboo, whatever in there, maybe a few guppies, and let it stagnate... that will distract them from the important ponds! Just a thought! :-)
