I got 2 big breeding tanks, 1 birth tank, and a grow out tub in the back yard. I'm having a hard time coming up with a way to keep the sun off them more without ticking my mum off. She loves the water hyacinth I got gifted to me right after I watched this vid. 😜😁🐟
It's against the houses east side. Gets sun till about 1:30-2. Problem is out "porch" is a big concrete square. It heats up and heats the tub up. I put the tub up on wood blocks to stop the temp fluctuation. But the water temp still creeps over 80. I hose down the concrete and it drops it back just under 80 and hold till evening. The I turn the heater on for the night.
I keep 3, 18 gallon, round tubs and a 90 gallon wood pond for my guppies. I also have a 180 in ground goldfish pond. I have 1st generation 1/2 blacks crossed to , what I think are called, artic purple guppies. I really like the purple and orange on the artic purple so I'm trying to create my own line at this point. I've had 5 drops since may and hopefully I'll be breeding the female crosses back to a new artic purple male in the coming month. Love the vids Michael, keep them coming!
Green water is super great for fry. Mine did clear up on there own but I plant guppy grass in mine. I did water lettuce and hyacinths last year but they had leeches! So dwarf water lettuce and duck weed this year. A power head with filter floss works well to polish. I have one of the aquaneat UV lights and it works well. But you need to cover the intakes for fry. It’s about $30. Straw bails are also used in ponds for clarification you can get at Home Depot or Lowe’s but Ive never used them. Looking great brother!
Hey Mike, you could try to cover the tanks with shade cloth like they use for gardening. It's finer material so it will block some of the sun to prevent the algae from growing so much and keep the bugs out.
Mike, AA Green Killing Machine Internal UV Sterilizer with power pump does a great job on green water; takes a few days. You only need to buy one and you can move from tub to tub. Supposedly, Dr Tim's Refresh (bacterial product) helps with green water, but need to add additional air stones as these products can deplete the tub of oxygen and stress the fish.
Breakfast for dinner! What temperature are ponds averaging? I have endler and blk cloud minnows outside. Minnows are about to burst with eggs and have endler fry. I'm still afraid to put my plecos out. Hey! Do you have a breeder female bristlenose of some sort you want to sell?

For clearing the algae, you could try a barley straw bundle that they use for ponds. That's supposed to help though I've never tried it myself.
