    I just had a horrible run with two poorly cycled tanks- 10 gallon and 4 gallon because I’m a noob and I didn’t fully cycle my tanks. My question now- my guppies look pale and starting to get fin rot. What do I do to help them out? Are there treatments or vitamins to help them out? Thank you ( one tank is 5 pregnant female endler and guppies and fry.. none died!! But snails did.. 😢

    Tough break Michael. But you did do a good job of assesssing and responding to the situation including factoring in your available time and discussing some alternative actions to resolve and recheck. MM's comment below is interesting - deserves further thought. Ordered some varities of anubias from JB yesterday. The EZ Green we ordered from Aq Coop Is working well. Tomorrow is Spring; just give me a couple of 70 degree afternoons and I'll be on my front porch making fishing tackle for May/June. Janice and I drove down to Brigantine to pick up our four wheel drive pass on the first day they were for sale - I got pass number 14, my lowest number ever. We may have to camp out next year for number 1. Guess I got off topic and started to prattle. Have a great week and Happy Spring !!!

    Have you tested ammolock I had a major spike in ammonia and having trouble getting it down. I had found a dead fish in my aquaclear filter I've done a 50% water change and was doing small water changes and I am stuck at 4ppm then I found the dead fish in my filter last night that was in there for a min. My kids have been trying to do extra feedings. I've cut down on their feedings and trying ammo lock to try it.

    I think your problem could be the lights not working. I had comet goldfish in a 75 g with loads of algae on the glass and rocks. I borrowed their light and put it on another tank for a about a week. The algae started to die off and I got an ammonia spike. I did a large water change however I still lost 3 silver dollars and my favorite goldfish (RIP Flip)...the dead algae got sucked into the canister filter and continued to rot down..It was not until I pulled apart my canister that the penny dropped and I was able to work out what had happened.

    Question!! I had an ammonia spike about a week ago. Established tank of over a year. I can not find the source of ammonia. I tested the tap water and it’s testing somewhat high. Fish all acting normal. Feeding once every 3 days to combat ammonia. Not sure what to do here. Just wait it out and keep dosing Prime? And I can’t tell if water changes are helping or hurting. Could it simply be the water company has/is putting more ammonia/chloramine in the water? Would that give me an ammonia reading without being ammonia?

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely that is what it is. Call the water company and ask.

    I highly recommend keeping at least 1 pair of each type of fish that you take outdoors to grow...keep 1 pair in the fish room as a safety net incase of racoons or disaster of heat/cold ect. So you'll always have some to restart the colony.

      What happened?

    • @heatherwanderer777
      @heatherwanderer777 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Back in the day, I had some expensive guppies that I paid 45-55 bucks for a pair, get them in and they start popping out fry in a short order...but I kept the offspring and parents in the same tank. Had an ammonia spike while away for a weekend, came back and the entire colony including parents, juvies, and fry dead.
      I learned my lesson, after that I separated out the first drop from every new strain I got in, I'd divide them into thirds and raise the fry in 3 different tanks, so that if anything happened with the original pair, or even one batch of the fry, I had something to restart the strain with and not be back at zero again. Generally did that anytime I only had 1 original pair that I spent a lot of money on. I had to have a bunch of 10 gallons set aside for it, but peace of mind was worth it.
      Once a colony was going real well I would split them into two big tanks and never have to worry about a calamity wiping out the entire strain, I'd always have enough adults in the second tank to start back up again.

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At least you learned your lesson! I have done that with a few strains, not intentionally but do breed different colors out of them. I may start splitting off some of my more expensive strains now!

    I just had a major fish die off this morning. Two days ago one of my 4 female guppies gave birth during the night. I didn't catch it in time. The following morning I saw several fry. I the ran out to buy yarn for a spawning mop. I figured the coarse gravel would give them places to hide in the meantime. When I got back, no fry could be found. It was water testing day, so I tested for ammonia and Ph Ammonia was at 0.25 ppm and PH at 7.0 The water was crystal clear. Ammonia had been going down, but was still not at 0 ppm. I went out again and bought an Acurel Ammonia reducing pad. I rinsed it, cut it to size and placed it in my filter to see if it would help to complete the cycle. Well, th water immediately clouded up horribly I decided to wait til morning for it to clear up. Next morning most of my fish were dead. I was able to save a few by putting them in another, established tank. "I did massive water change in the death tank with R. O water, treated it with nitrifying bacteria and am going to restart the tank I lost money on the pad,all the fish an d the time and effort trying to remedy the situation.The thing is I don't know what the hell happened...

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was the tank cycled to begin with? I have never used that product and wouldn't. If you have other established tanks, simply take some filter media from that tank and squeeze it into the other tank. That will help kick start the cycle.

    • @renerenatorivera9062
      @renerenatorivera9062 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It had been testing increasingly lower ammonia concentrations and was at 0.25ppm. I decided to use the pad to help complete to O ppm. I did, in fact take a sponge from other tank and put it in the "death tank"It's been two days now and ammonia is dow to 2.0 from 8.0 after the fiasco and two water changes ( 25% each).I am currently fishless cycling all over again. Thanks for your response. Still don't know what the hell happened.

    So... *sigh* I'm so frustrated. I have two Mollies (yes that's all) and my tank is always testing at 8PPM!!! I use the api master test kit. I'm so worried my fish are going to die. I use ammo lock on my tank every couple of days cause I know the ammonia is out of control, and I change water and vacuum gravel once a week. I am a new aquarist. My fish look happy, energetic, move around good, they have their little personalities. I don't see them acting weird like moving slow or hovering or anything. They seem to be great. I just really want to bring the ammonia down. Help! 😥 Oh and also, this is a new 10 gallon tank, had it for 3 weeks, and this week I am changing the filter. I hope that's enough info. I do use a bacteria drop, a drop to make water safe plus the ammo lock I already mentioned. Thank u all!

      OK, take a breath.....this will be easier via email michaelsfishroom@gmail.com First...it sounds like the tank is was ever cycled. Do you know what that means? Next, test your tap water also. Please email me the info and I will try to help you from there.

    Fish can become "use to" higher levels of ammonia and nitrite if it is not a sudden spike but a slow and gradual change so that is probably why the fry are doing well. The adults that could not handle the really high levels of ammonia reached a critical level and then died.
    It looked like but I cannot be sure that your KH and GH were low on the test strips too?? If so there is not as much buffering capacity--if Ph fluctuates and there is an ammonia spike or nitrite spike it can be more deadly. You did the exact right thing, change water. You can also instead of prime add some additional bacteria for the filtration or add more plants like some duck weed or pothos, or even spider plant-lets. The other thing I have found helps is extra biological filtration, which I saw I thought some bio-media in the bottom of the tank, yah! Additional places for bacteria, like a few pieces of the lava rock you placed in the large canister filter in another video helps too--another place for beneficial bacteria to colonize. The bacteria need a certain level of ammonia to reproduce but they can take awhile to get their act in gear. I have also found adding a small Aqua Clear bag of Zero Carb helps as well. But you probably knew all of this anyway!
    Enjoy your videos, sorry about your fish loss. Let us know how the tank is doing!

      @MichaelsFishRoom  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a shame about the guppies, but I'm glad it wasn't a rarer strain or the angel juveniles. I can't see how your water could be causing mini-cycles: don't most of the bacteria live in the filters, where the "food" concentration is highest for them?

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I don't think it is the water changes causing the mini cycle. I think in this case, a guppy of two died, I didn't see it and over time that caused a the ammonia to rise, then over more time more died and more ammonia.

  • @michaelkane2470
    @michaelkane2470 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think a lot of the reason ammonia is high,is over feeding,and not cleaning out dead plant material.Or maybe do a water change.

    I wonder if using any kind of substrate might help you out in the long run in that tank. More surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. Fixing the problem today in a few hours is nice and all....but figuring out the reason and preventing it from happening again in the future should be the goal! (I'm amazed that you "broke" the cycle in this tank to begin with!.....even with a few dead bodies. All signs point to needing more biological filtration in that tank if you ask me!). I also suggest you convince the end user of that canister filter to continually keep it in tote or a bucket or something.....it'll leak eventually lol!

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I have been do some brain thinking on that tank. I have extra sponges, I may as well just use them. As far as that Canister filter, way ahead of you my friend, told him to get a tote. I am pretty sure I will be doing the maintenance on it anyway.

    Test drops are a total pain in the ass micheal. I am with you on the strips, how are drops more accurate? This is the problem with this world, just because something is more expensive and more complicated, its suddenly better or "the only way to go" Bullshit, i spend 10 dollars on everything except the tank itself, a 20 high with a light cost 75 bucks, everything else i have bought, has been online and has been 10 bucks. Petstore fish, cheap walmart fake plants, pea gravel from menards, 10 dollar heaters. I dont know whats wrong with your Tuxeudo guppy tank, the survivors look fine, but i am with you brother on the fact that the strips work just fine. They are so cheap and easy, dunk it and wait 5 mins and compare. When you use the drops, its like your a chemist after awhile and the fishroom is a meth lab. Too much work, little payoff. Why are the drops better? There are the same amount of colors, 5 colors, 5 diffrent readings. Lighter to darker. Nothing in this world has to be perfect, it is totally irrelevant if i have exactly 60ppm nitrates or i have 80, it means i need to vacum, clean the filter and do a partial water change regardless!!!!

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  7 ปีที่แล้ว
