  • I've been working on my chess-based minis game. Let me give you a show and tell!
    The idea is:
    Chess, but its miniature agnostic...
    Chess, but it has list-building...
    Chess, but it has goblins...

Chess 28 could be a hobby movement. Like the idea of pure support pieces. And combination moves and possibility to support. And the depraved royal court. So much better than orcs against dwarves. Keep working on this, you already have at least one future paying customer 🙂

You are exactly on the money here… I actually have a #chess28 manifesto cooking up…. 😊

Check out the free game "Brawl Arcane28" which is designed to be played on a chessboard!

This sort of DIY fantasy Chess game seems pretty cool, you think it would be cool if all the factions had some sort of "X Royal Court" twist to them to mirror chess? Like how in Gaslands all the factions are themed as race team sponsors (though I admit that theming is pretty thin in that game), Might be a cool aesthetic.
Also, are there gonna be "Special Rules" to represent particular Chess manoeuvres? Like En Passant, or Castling, or would they be "Gambits"?
Mucking around with movement of pieces seems both complicated & also the main draw of the game, would definitely be fun to muck around with.

that’s a cool idea for the factions.
There are special rules to ape chess piece abilities, yep, and lots of space for other fun stuff too!

I like the relatively limited theming in Gaslands, it's just right amount of special faction tweaks.

Due to the compact and understood nature of the chess layout my mind went instantly into "What cool environments can I build for this game?" Dungeon, forest, ruins, temple....
Finally, a simple core mechanic for designing characters and factions you enjoy playing with miniatures you enjoy painting - I want games with more custom stats to suit my collection. I understand this must be inherently difficult to keep balanced whilst still allowing depth of play style, the chess template certainly seems to help focus this?
I look forward to trying it out, i'll check the website and have a nosy. Keep on truckin, quality game creating.

Thanks! Yeah, I totally agree. My imagination immediately leap all over the place about the sort of themes I could build for. I’m going to share more over the next month, but I’ve already scratch-built two custom chessboards in different themes!

Do you have PDFs or sharable files for your Stat sheets youve created here? I love the concept and would love to test it out!

There are some unit cards in the downloadable early access bundle, but everything is 'build your own models' right now. I need to get the initial factions out. I'm in and out with family vacations through August, but getting the Flagstone factions out as an update to the early access rules is a priority of mine before the summer is out.

I'm a big fan of Brawl Arcane, which apart from the fact it too uses a chess board, bears little resemblance to Flagstone. This game looks great even though it does feature my biggest bugbear in mini-based games; the fact you don’t know (or is very hard to remember) everything your opponent’s model’s are capable of. I find this is especially brutal when you are new to a game and playing someone who knows the game well. Even though I suck at chess, it is fairly easy to learn or remember how pieces move. I love the chess-lite game “The Duke” as each piece has it’s available actions printed directly on to it. Instead of custom MOVE and ATTACK possibilities in Flagstone, have you thought of formatting set stats to make it easier to read the board? As is, I feel a player has to be quite invested to learn what all the models on the board can do to be able to make tactical decisions and lessens the impact of the need for a chess grid altogether (making it feel more like a hex & chit wargame or just a speedier/more accurate way of measuring distances) . I’m probably completely wrong in this assumption and looking forward to getting a chance to play this asap.

Great observations. I’m not certain yet. I don’t mind having some depth that you have to learn but also I think the system could be welcoming of certain games which keep it simple and make all the models very similar and other chess28 games which go deeper into wide variety of model abilities, so you could have both simple and deep versions of chess28 games.

@@planetsmashergames I think so. I'd suggest if possible to include a sample army using the existing chess pieces with the same movement, just att/def stats and whatever chrome you think works to make the conversion easier.
