I made two complete chess sets in junior high: a ceramic one, and one out of wire. The ceramic one took the longest. In Advanced Sculpture class, while we were working on ceramic facial features, I was also working on the pieces, because the main project was not appealing to me in the slightest. My teacher was nice about it, but once, she told me in a friendly tone, "Kirill, stop making chess pieces". By that time, I already had four pieces completed. That was my second year with the same teacher. I did get the main project done with the rest of the class, but the ceramic chess set took me until the end of the year, because I couldn't always work with clay, as we had other projects as well, and it was difficult to schedule when I could glaze the pieces, and then when they could be fired, because we only had one working kiln. But, in the end, I had all 32 pieces, 16 of them onyx glaze, and the others a mixture of aquamarine and zircon. Originally, I was also planning to make a ceramic board, but needless to say, that was rather unrealistic. The wire set took roughly a week. Originally, it was supposed to be just 10 pieces, a mini model for the large scale chess pieces, of which I made 6. A pawn, king, queen, knight, rook and bishop. A foot, 1.1 meter, 1 meter, 2 feet, 1.5 feet, and 2 feet tall, respectively. I made those out of chicken wire, then covered them with two layers of plaster cloth, and finally painted them deep royal blue, and added gold, silver and bronze highlights, just in time for the Art Show. The mini model was expanded into a full set later, with gold and silver wire for black and white, respectively. Someone else at the school also made a blue and white MARBLE set, all 32 pieces, and the board. Very heavy, but very aesthetically pleasing. One of the librarians at the Media Center also 3d printed a black and purple squirrel set.
