India booms, China cools: What does it mean for the rest of the world? | To the point

  • Never before has a Chinese head of state canceled a G-20 meeting - THE forum for the most important industrialized and emerging countries. Xi Jinping is now sending his Premier Li to New Delhi - this will most likely be seen as an affront by host Modi. Yet Xi and Modi certainly pursue common interests - against Western dominance. On the other hand, they are arch-rivals with leadership aspirations for the global South. In addition, China's economy is weakening, while India is catching up enormously. So we ask: "India booms, China cools: What does it mean for the rest of the world?"
    Our guests:
Vendeline von Bredow (The Economist )
    Felix Lee (China.Table)
    Isha Bhatia (DW)

22:00 Is India a good alternative to China as a trading partner?
23:00 A shift of trade relations will be extremely hard - especially for Germany

As an Indian, of course we have a long long way to go, and nothing to be taken for granted. If the Indian economy grows at 8% real for the next decade, then we have some heft. We know what happened to Argentina, Japan and possibly China. I think the big difference between India and China is that, Indian politics ultimately is about improving the quality of our lives, more than anything, and that makes peace and prosperity necessary, while the PRC government tells their military "Prepare for War", every single year. People here don't realize that dictatorships always go to war when their internal economy crumbles. Taiwan War may not be as far off as it seems. I think Germany and the EU made historic mistakes by depending on Russia and the PRC. In the short term they saw steep growth, but they could not prevent the Ukraine War and perhaps another debt crisis arising from the Belt and Road initiatives.

Kazakhstan is huge and is about the size of India and its potential to be a growing economy is to not be underestimated. China is going to have a decent advantage over the area. Here is the reality. Unless China's GDP growth rate falls to negative or in total collapse, but if they grow by 4.2% per annum, then India must grow by at least 19.98% to keep the difference of the two countries' GDP gap unchanged at $14.44 trillion. Because China's GDP in 2023 was $17.76 trillion. That's 4.758 times of India's $3.732 trillion. 4.2% X 4.758= 19.98%. Even India's GDP growth rate is at 21% per annum, it will be only $37.5 billion more than China a year. So $14.44t/$37.5b (14440/37.5) =385, even working it out using compound rate, India still needs at least 200 years to catch up with China!

In the report on Indu, DW mentions" Indian claimed territory" as being disputed. Actually China claims Arunchal Pradesh, an Indian state in NE as South Tibet and has renamed many towns and features. So actually China claims Indian held territories also as it's own, a stark difference between the approaches of both the countries. Moreover China is not inclined in demarcating the border as it wants to keep the issue alive.

The discussion needed to be more in-depth.
Momentum has a certain role to play in the next 4-5 years with India reducing some gap with China which would still be quite large though. However, more important point is how the two leaders manage their respective countries in the long term (till early 30s - Modi could be PM till 2034 and Xi president for lifelong).
What I see Modi is leading India towards incremental changes every day, week, month, and year forming cordial relationship with everyone and in 10 years it will pay rich dividend whereas Xi is antagonizing everybody, every year, month, week, and day.
None of the neighbours are happy with belligerant China and West is also acting against it.
China currently has Africa in their pockets because of raw money power and some middle east countries due to their resentment against West.
The world geo-politics would be very interesting from India's perspective in the next 5-10 years period.

It's obvious that European narrative is always loaded towards a rivalry and enmity between India and China. It's a natural inclination considering that China and India represented the majority prosperity in the world in the past, and the trend is that it is going to be a repeat. The West fears that this common feature will relegate the West to an ignominious future as in the past. Despite the transgressions, India always avoids a direct confrontation in most aspects of China's aspiration, and acts towards a peaceful and prosperous future with China, as it will be inevitable for both countries to avoid the repeat of the West's colonialism.
