  • Samir Saran is the President of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), India’s premier think tank headquartered in New Delhi. Saran is a well-known figure in the field of diplomacy and serves as the curator of the Raisina Dialogue. He has authored four books, focusing his research on global governance, climate and energy policy, technology policy, and India’s foreign relations.
In the latest episode of the ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, he discusses India's role in shaping a new world order and emphasises why India's success matters globally, not just to Indians. Saran also shares insights into Raisina Dialogues 2024, India’s annual flagship platform on geopolitics and geo-economics, and provides reasons behind its inception.
Samir extensively talks about India-U.S. relations and their implications for New Delhi, particularly in the event of Donald Trump returning to power. Without hesitation, he notes that there is a growing sense in the West that Prime Minister Modi will secure a third consecutive term.
He also delves into the topic of the Ram Mandir and its impact not only in India but around the world. Samir criticises Western media for harbouring preconceived notions about India and consistently portraying it in a negative light.

One point which is always missed in such discussions is that China's super growth was driven by State controlled capitalism. No protests, no dissensions, land simply acquired where required and the fear in the contractors to complete projects in time. India is a functioning democracy with a humongous population. Political agendas, activism, dissent at the drop of a hat, pushback of all kinds. Our growth will be gradual or at best on track. Those who celebrate the China growth story always miss out on this single, critical dimension which made much of the difference.

    • @SriramNarasimhan90

Whatever you said are 100% true, but maybe why we are feel its missed is because its a missed opportunity of India even when China started to outpace us starting 1950's we never realized until we opened up in 1990's. So even if we are a democracy we saw enormous growth that happened in last decade that if it had happened post independence, we might already be an India of 2047 that we imagine today. Jain hind!

@@SriramNarasimhan90 China's growth story started in 1979 under Deng Xiao Ping. Our economic liberalisation started in 1992-93. One critical component of China's
Ultra fast growth was that the Communist Government dictated the path to State Capitalism. Nothing stood in the way of say infrastructure projects. And for the first 20-25 years they became Factory to the world with cheap labour. All big MNC companies set up factories in China. The CCP being the only political party controlled everything.

In the past 30 years in China When the government acquires your land, for 99% of the people it's THE once in a life time opportunity you climb up to the higher level of economic social ladder, because the government pays several times more money than the land or property is sold in regular way.

On a side note, i feel it would be better if you could in the least acknowledge the person serving your refreshments during the taping with a basic "Thanks" or in the least a "smile with a nod" if you feel the flow of conversation will be interrupted. Ignoring that person completely while you have your grandstanding conversations on where India is now shows that we as a society still have a long way to go to fully embrace "Dignity of Labour" at even the top rungs of society. And this is coming from a person who completely agrees with the nature and scope of this podcast. No offence intended to either Smita or Samir. Fully support Raisina Dialogues to become a global phenomenon that eclipses even Davos.

Although the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) may seem to be a mere foreign policy think-tank, actually it's far more than that. In the last ten years it has emerged as the sole agency that is behind India's foreign policymaking, similar to the Council on Foreign Relations in the US. As a result of that India's foreign policy is now consistent and is unlikely to be effected by changes in ruling parties at the centre. Which has its own benefits as well as drawbacks.

There is another way to look at it.
China stands alone today, or with the countries who are also isolated (Read Russia, China, Pakistan, North Korea etc).
Whereas Indian foreign minister shared the stage with US and German counterparts - the most powerful country, the most oowycountry in Europe and the largest democracy in the world.
It is just point of view.

The commodification of human experience is true on each side of the battle.
We wish to pass a message, and then we use a an event as rhetoric and trampoline through which we can launch and propagate our message

Let the guest speak. It’s annoying to the listener to have the two host competing to disrupt the conversation. This is not a family evening competing to put one another down.

The internal security dialogue should be hosted in Kolkatta or a place in WB. It would not only bring economic benefit to the population but also offer a healing touch to the population.

So easy way out viewers want to see differences.
Question is “why difference get more viewers?”
Answer is “When you have agreement no further discussion needed. When there is difference discussion carries on and coverage continues and viewers see different opinions. Hence, viewership is more.”

Recently a Jizya tax only on the Hindu temples was imposed by Congress in Karnataka. Please make a video and spread awareness of this biggg issue please please i beg youu 🙏🙏🙏🙏
And because of this reason some Hindus think of not donating to temples... But that's a worse case where Hindus stop donations to temples... How will our culture and temples be strong and survive if people stop donations 😖😖😖
So please do something and do podcasts on this important matter so that government removes such tax impositions on Hindus temples and if it still imposes then it should be charged from other religious places as well!! Please i beg u do something about it 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭🙏

    Hello team,
Thoroughly enjoy these conversations. However the host must consider toning down on interruptions as the guests get cut out on their thought flow.
I understand that when someone is as senior in the profession as Smita it is a hard ask as they are already polished but please consider this as a feedback with good intent.
    Cheers.

I am glad that the question of the green card was brought up. It's becoming frustrating as someone called out, just getting laid off can potentially disrupt your whole life and you can never plan long term as well.
