For us too, it has played an integral part in our lives ever since we can remember! With this in mind, we've decided to rank each World Cup that has been played since we were born in 1993.
8 Tournaments in total - we've chosen 5 ways to rank them!

    You’ve absolutely nailed 2006
It was my first World Cup I remember watching most of, and the one closest to when I turned 10, which as a universal rule is always everyone’s favourite World Cup!
The goals and controversial moments were unreal, but there wasn’t enough in between. Every big ‘moment’ was something mental like Zidane head butt, battle of Nuremberg, Germany vs Argentina punch up, Rooney red card/Ronaldo wink, Roberto Carlos tying his laces KOing Brazil, Graham Poll 3 yellows, rather than ‘that great comeback’ or ‘that 5 goal thriller that was end to end’. The only match that probably qualifies for that was Italy vs Germany semi final.
It was probably the most balanced World Cup I can remember, as you said so many sides had golden generations (Portugal!! Definitely should have mentioned them), it was the last hurrah of the great France, Italy and Brazil teams, and the rebirth of Spain (Torres, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Ramos, Villa all had their first major minutes here), rebirth of Netherlands and the rebirth of Germany (Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Podolski). And a healthy balance of teams at their peak (Portugal, England, Argentina).
It fell down on shocks but tbh that was probably because there were so many balanced teams. In many ways Italy winning was shock after Calciopoli, and barely surviving Australia.
Despite the lack of shocks it had a lot of ‘smaller’ countries qualify, and some others for the first time. Angola, Togo and Trinidad and Tobago haven’t qualified before or since, and it may be a while before they do. Ukraine first qualification, first for ‘Serbia’ (and Montenegro) since break up of Yugoslavia. First for Czech Republic since break up of Czechoslovakia. First qualification and first win for Ghana who made it out of the groups! First for a very talented but perennial unlucky with group draws Ivory Coast.

@@TFHBs I like your idea of doing the old world cups. Obviously you were too young, and some of them have minimal surviving footage, but judging in cultural/footballing impact/innovations, stars + legendary teams and controversy you could do a very good list
Imo you were too kind to USA 94 (only had the under dog runs of Sweden, Ireland and Bulgaria, otherwise a average-poor WC)
2002 I considered good but if you LOVE controversy South Korea vs Spain and especially Italy can understandably push it up.
Too harsh on Russia 2018, ignoring the hosts, the standard of goals was pretty good, solid amount of good games, good number of shocks. I too am Welsh but lived in England at the time- it being the first tournament England hadn’t sucked ass in since 2006 definitely helped, idk if you factor that in. I’d definitely have it above 2002 and about level with 98
Imo 2022 was better than 2014, outside of it being in Qatar and being in the winter. GOAT group stages and I don’t think it’s close, high number of memorable games (Netherlands-Argentina, England-France, Morocco-Portugal, Brazil-Croatia, Japan-Croatia), plenty of shocks, a great final (debatable best ever) and to top it off the narrative of the greatest player of all time cementing his legacy and not only finally winning a WC, but being pivotal in doing so.
      I’d go
      2022 >2014
      1998 > 2018 > 2006
      2002
      1994 > 2010
I hate putting 2010 last because the vibes and everything surrounding it were perfect, but the football was stale and most of the best players in the world didn’t perform (blame the Jabulani)

I was born on the day of the Germany v Italy semi-final, funnily enough. From what I've seen online it was a great tournament, wish I could remember it.
Good point about the 'closest to age 10' ground rule, because Brazil 2014 was when I was 8 and I'd indeed put it as my favourite World Cup! Very nostalgic for that summer, and James Rodriguez man, what a breakout star! In my opinion he was robbed the Golden Ball, was the best player of the tournament in my opinion and it's a shame his career didn't really take off massively afterwards. This will always be in his legacy though.
(Also, Spain winning South Africa 2010 is one of my earliest football memories, ever. Netherlands v Spain in general was one of the first football matches I ever watched, remember Netherlands v Slovakia in the last 16 though. Jabulani ball easily worst ever World Cup ball, swerve was just stupidly overpowered).
I'm almost 18 and yet it feels all my footballing knowledge is just so modern.

@@kcxy06 yeah it’s a good rule of thumb to observe potential bias
60+ year olds think 1970 was the best
50 year olds think 1986 was the best
40 year olds rave about Italia 90 despite the awful football
20 year olds think 2014 was the best
(Tbf those were some strong tournaments!)
It happens. It’s the same with films, Tv and music. Its that age you are finally aware of the players and significance, but not completely aware of everything so some of African and Asian teams still feel new and exciting, you get to experience the excitement in full for the first time. Sometimes people will bias towards WCs when they turned 18 because that’s their first experience of WC down the pub (may be why I rate Russia 2018 - I was 22 and first WC away from home)

Very solid ranking to be honest. As an Argentine I'd put Qatar in the top tier, but that's because of obvious favoritism. I am surprised as to why Korea-Japan is in the excellent tier though, given the scandals and the quality of the semi finals (Brazil-Turkey, Germany-South Korea), but that may be because England had a good run at that World Cup and Argentina had an exceptionally poor and disapointing performance.
    My personal ranking would be:
    1. Brazil 2014
    2. Qatar 2022 (just barely below Brazil)
    3. Germany 2006
    4. France 1998 (I consider there to be a massive difference between the top four and the bottom four)
    5. USA 1994
    6. Russia 2018
    7. South Africa 2010
    8. Korea-Japan 2002
That's not to say Korea-Japan was bad in my opinion, I'd personally say it's below average considering that there are many other World Cups which I'd say are worse (Italy 1934, France 1938, Italia 90, Mexico 1970, Chile 1962).
    Regardless, solid ranking!

This was entertaining, thanks! Personally I think Korea/Japan 02 should be good not excellent. It had it's moments but I can't really think of tons of memorable moments, a bit similar to Russia 2018 really.
Also, would love to see a ranking of Euros tournaments in the lead up to this summer. Quite fitting obviously and it'd be a nice way to get in the mood. Looking forward to it!

    From first to last:
    1) 1994 WC. Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Sweden 🇸🇪 & Romania 🇷🇴 were amazing, knocking out Argentina 🇦🇷 and Germany 🇩🇪. Maradona failing a drugs test. Backpass ban and 3 pts worked a treat. Great tribute from Brazil to the recently deceased Senna and Dener.
    2) 1998 WC. Great victory by hoste France, with the rise of Zidane, Henry & Vieira.
    3) 2022 WC. Politics aside, proof of why the 32 team format works best. Argentina lived on the edge and grabbed it narrowly.
    4) 2018 WC. Amazing run by Croatia 🇭🇷. Spain 🇪🇸 and Germany 🇩🇪 knocked out in hilarious circumstances. England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 looking good for once. Belgium 🇧🇪 had the best squad, but Martinez and his tactics let them down.
    5) 2014 WC. Amazing win by a great Germany 🇩🇪 side, who have not been the same since. England bottling it to Uruguay 🇺🇾 then Suarez banned for biting. Spain 🇪🇸 out in round 1 against Chile 🇨🇱. Brazil's 7-1 meltdown, exposing an mediocre team without Thiago and Neymar 😂
    6) 2010 WC. Great atmosphere, but the Jabulani ball ruined it. Diego Forlan was the best player in the world 🇺🇾 but Suarez handball was Suarez at it again 😂. Shame for Ghana. Germany looked mental but Spain brought them back to earth. Robben bottled 2 chances for Netherlands in the final to win it.
    7) 2002 WC. A tournament of shocks like France out in round 1 (Senegal got to the quarters). USA reached the semis after embarassing Portugal and Turkey were superb. Korea's antics against Italy and Spain soured their semi run somewhat. Brazil's golden generation deserved to win, but old school Germany grinded their way to the final with Kahn heroics.
    8) 2006 WC. The first World Cup I watched properly, but except Spain losing in the last 16, this cup went almost exactly to the form book. Brazil lost to France in the quarters, but the football was insanely dull and defensive. Lots of 4-5-1 formations and the antics between Netherlands & Portugal and England & Portugal summed up what a painful and uninspiring tournament it was. Zidane scarred his final game as a player by that headbutt. A tournament known more for theatrics than great play. Hated this tournament so much.

The world cup is easily the best sports tournament in the world. The 48 team format is actually a good idea because more underdog victories will suffice. However, it’s going to impact on other cups like the Euros, Copa America, AFCON and Asian Cup who will suffer because a lot of players will be more tired.

Out of this universe is correct. Brazil 2014 was the best WC that i've ever watched. A lot number of goals, exciting matches and a great atmosphere.
2002 and 1998 were excellents tournaments for a lot all the reasons that you guys said in this video, but 2006 misses something. I remember watching almost all the matches but few of them were memorable to this day. About 2010 and 2018 I totally agree, but 2022 was similar to 2010. 2022 had the most exciting final ever e some trhilling matches but the atmosphere, the quality of football plalyed in this competition was very poor.

2018 was the worst tournament. Easy competition for France no wonder everyone overhypes this overrated generation.
I give more props to Italy in 2006 because in that World Cup a lot countries had some really tough teams.
The World Cup of 2006 was so good even though I was crushed as a US fan that I didn’t get to see the US had the same success as the 2002 World Cup. But 2006 was a spectacular. It didn’t had the festivities of South Africa and Brazil but it didn’t need too. Football itself was enough to be enjoyed.
When 2010 World Cup I was looking forward to the same success but it was failed short of my expectations despite all the advertising.
2014 World Cup was amazing and it would have been better had Rivery and Falcao wouldn’t have gotten injured but unfortunately that happens in many world cups. I just wish we would have seen a Brazil vs Argentina final or a Germany vs Netherlands final instead of the same Germany vs Argentina
I don’t think 2022 was that good either but it was better than 2018 and 2010 World Cup. The cherry on top for me is the final which was the best final from all these World Cups that’s mention in the video
