- Red vs Blue Restoration is finally here! This marks the end of Red vs Blue, but the question is... Did it live up to what came before? Was it as funny as the Blood Gulch Chronicles? As epic as the Recollection? As intense as the Freelancer Saga or as satisfying as The Chorus Trilogy? Well, that's exactly what I explore in this video. My main complaint with Restoration is that it felt like there was about 30 minutes to an hour missing from it. It felt like an idea that was scoped out for a normal season-length movie (which since Reconstruction, were normally about 2 - 2 and a half hours) but the shut down of the studio forced them to scale it back massively.
For a last hurrah, a final send off that people actually wanted, it wasn't bad at all. It was a lot of fun, and felt right at home with early RvB. But it still feels like it's missing a chunk.
That said, with the shutdown of RT, the likely budgetary and time constraints, it's a damn fine showing for the last push of a dying company. And a far better send off for RvB than the last several seasons.
It's sad that we lost Rooster Teeth, but I'm glad that, in their final moments, they created a worthy goodbye for RvB. It's a shame that RWBY probably won't get the same.

it was confirmed on Burnie's new podcast that it was, in fact, budgetary and time constraints. he said he would have loved to put more to it, but he just didn't have the time or money.

Hearing the Barenaked Ladies track play really did something for me, it was super cheesy but it felt like we were really cruising down Blood Gulch Avenue one last time
Honestly that campfire scene was the most emotion I felt during the “season” which I equally loved and hated.
Little disappointed they didn't use older music like the blood gulch blues, contact, or I say ohh
Restoration was far from perfect, there's plenty I'd change. But, it was exactly what it needed to be.

imma be so honest right now, the first of quite a few moments in restoration to make me tear up was when simmons was saying that his first order as red team’s new leader was discharging grif. that soft music kicked in and grif was absolutely taken aback by it, that really got me for some reason. i guess just seeing this character FINALLY getting something he wanted after all these years just really struck a chord with me, and grif deciding to stay for one last adventure just made the moment all the better :)
It would have worked better for me if there was a bit more sense to it all. There is no reason the Sim-Troopers would still exist, Project Freelancer was shut down and their confrontation was never a serious war effort to begin with. For me, it felt like Grif could have left any time, but he chose to stay to some weird mix of nostalgia and something else I couldn't define. When he invited Simmons to visit him on Earth in the end and Simmons declined, that also felt weirdly out-of-character for me. So to me it felt like both Simmons as well as Caboose didn't know what to do with themselves after everything was said and done and they decided to play pretend. Both teams are down to a single member (not counting Lopez for the red team and Sheila for the blue team), so there wasn't really a point in staying at all.
The finale was all over the place for me. Sarge died for real this time, Church/Epsilon as well as Tex died so many times during the show that I lost count, Doc dying off-screen didn't feel deserved, Donut being absent and Tucker being not entirely there either felt weird and I feel that neither Caboose nor Simmons got good closure. Only Sarge and Grif did, Sarge by dying and Grif by being able to finally go home.
In a way I would almost prefer this to be another type of simulation by Church, so we may envision a more satisfying ending for the characters. And as controversial as it would have been for the fans, I kinda always envisioned that the ending of the show would result in removed helmets and face reveals. Another reason for me to prefer to think about the finale to just be another layer of a simulation.
But in the end I'm just glad that we got something else than RvB: Zero to wrap things up.
Burnie Burns, the writer for the series, has spoken about how they had such a low budget for this final season, I'm not surprised it wasn't a bigger ending. It wrapped up nicely, but at the same time felt like it was missing things. It had to hit plot points to tell the story, which left too much out for the characters themselves. It was a really good ending. I'm sad there'll be no more.
As soon as the sun began to set in Blood Gulch, and the music kicked in - I was just in tears, man. Where do the years go?
I'll always love the moments of Tex knocking around the guys. Monty and the team back then did an amazing job helping to making Halo look great.
Tbh, I have no intention in watching Restoration. Don't get me wrong, I love hearing that they brought back the character Tex to lay down more smack down one last time, but to me RvB, RT and its subsidiaries, died almost a couple or few years ago when I felt they were on the WB chopping block when multiple layoffs were occurring and then some more allegations/true facts came out about some of the leadership and some of the on screen people.
That line about narrative therapy was honestly wonderfull. I feel like sappy is okay, and honestly ....sappy is something a lot of people love because thats kind of how love is, its sappy , at least if your ernest with people / your audience. Honestly looking back on the show its kind of amazing how it evolved from its early seasons quite frankly from a story perspective, but then again unlike a lot of shows it HAD TIME and popularity to keep evolving and improving which is something a lot of machinima never get.

You have Tex and Carolina the best parts of him being his love and his best creation facing off against all the worst parts of him that corrupted him, His creations and mind that went too far.

I can’t pick a favorite RvB moment, there’s honestly so many great ones. The Reds and Blues coming together to fight Meta, any of Sarge’s speeches, just about any scene with Washington (my beloved), the very first 3D animated scene in season 8, and all the running gags throughout the series. But I guess if I had to pick an absolute favorite moment, it would be season 10’s finale. It just showed how much all these characters had progressed as people and as a team, and it was a great send-off for the show… until they came back and made my favorite Trilogy ever, of all time.
This is probably the best RVB review ever....of all time

Hey, i wanted to thank you for making this video. I had just gotten past Sarge's death and was not feeling like continuing. I just, everything felt wrong in my mind. I thought, even with all that was crashing down around in the studio, they had lost touch with the one series that almost always managed to drag at least 1 laugh out of me every now and then. But i felt like i was forcing myself to watch this send off. And then i saw your video. I really took it in, and then i started from the beginning. And before i knew it, i was laughing again. I had that same stupid smile when some out of the box nonsense happened again and again. And i think you were right. Its not perfect. And it never had to be. Goodbyes are never perfect after all. So, thanks, for helping me say goodbye to the show properly.

Honestly im glad its over, if i really wanted to connect to the show i'd just watch to 13, but this is just the ending that finishes the 15-19 era in a way i dont feel empty about those seasons anymore, they are nice
something I love about rvb is that you get to pick your own ending with it
if you didn't enjoy restoration's ending then you can go back and decide how it ended
you could've stopped watching after season 1, 5, 6, 8, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 and all of those would be fine endings
I went into this season kinda not expecting a perfect finale, because IMO season 10 & 13 were the perfect finales that couldn't be topped.
And i will say it didn't satisfy everything (donut really should have been there, but at least shizno gave us enough to fill that hole)
But the weird thing is that the way this season ended in a simple way, it felt real, like even tho some characters didn't die... They probably won't ever see each other again, its like after high school or military, ya can split apart from close bonds kinda causally.
It did feel like a mix mash of all that came before, and a final bow to the plot, and when those credits rolled my heart felt those years I'd been with the show.
As you said, it being imperfect was perfect.

I honestly thought it was a perfect ending. I’ve been watching this show since 2008. If you have been around this long, I don’t know how you could watch this and not get emotional. Glad they took the time to close out the story on these characters.
In the end when we discover Wash is seeing and hearing things, it reveals that the Counselor was never actually at the hospital, and when you watch it again you realize the Counselor is talking directly to the audience. It is a key for unlocking this story!!
I may or may not have cried at the end of restoration
My favourite RvB moment is still Carolina and Epsilon confronting the director.
The big bad guy they’ve built up for years, THE answer to the question “do you ever wonder why we’re here?” When they finally confront their demon, all they find is a broken man. Carolina can’t hold on to the rage she wants to feel, as it slips away from her face, all she can feel is pity. Pity for a man so broken over a lost love, he can do nothing else but wallow in it. Epsilon, however, doesn’t feel the same way. The torture, the pain, the memory, it all comes out. As he flashes between the fragments, and each fragment gets a line in his speech, we see how Epsilon mirrors the directors brokenness, but not his emptiness.
The scene never fails to make me cry, it’s such an unbelievably powerful scene that it’s bringing me to tears just imagining it. Typing this out was more difficult than it ought to be, through the tears an all. But I don’t think I’d have it any other way.
I'm so glad I found this. I'm so obsessed with it and started watching it when I was 11 too. And I mean OBSESSED. I have probably watched all the rvb seasons at least 6 times, PSA's, and QvsA. But I agree I had kind of a higher expectation for Restoration. This might weird, but I kind of wish that Carolina and Tex talked for a minute instead of just fighting together.
For me, in terms of storytelling, the Chorus Trilogy was the pinnacle of RvB. It took our guys well out of their normal comfort zone for 2 of its 3 seasons, gave us a war that was far more complex than good guys vs bad guys (and split our characters between the two sides) gave Tucker some epic character development, and gave us an ending that would have been the kind of ending people would talk about for a long time had that been where the series ended.
Given Season 14, and especially how it was summed up at the end, it really felt like they wanted to wrap RvB there, and hand further development of it over to fan creators (The ending monologue of that season is basically telling the fans to go out and create their own stuff).
Season 15 felt like it was a decent premise with some serious execution flaws. Had they given the script another pass or two it could have been a much better season. Season 16 was a hot mess. Season 17 was a fairly decent attempt at undoing the damage season 16 did, but it probably would have taken another season after that to fully win back the fans.
And the less said about Zero, the better! Even if Rooster Teeth as a whole wasn't already on the ropes by that point and was still in business today, that season probably would still be the one that killed RvB. I'm not against the idea of rebooting the show with a new cast, but you can't do a half-baked job of it!
This (season? Movie?) is far from perfect, but it feels more like RvB than most of the post-Chorus content did, and it did give us a satisfying end for most of the characters. Most shows belonging to dying studios aren't so lucky, and we should be thankful for that.
Favorite RvB moment is in S10, where the crew right the Tex drones. The music just makes it

I think the simulation theory works well because it explains the weird personality changes in the characters like sarge not wasting to help Caboose and how Washington was literally talking to himself the entire season and Donut being a admiral despite this most likely takeing not that long after the final battle so i think it is just a simulation so Sarge and Doc are still alive
Best way to describe it is a bunch of good ideas with a poor budget told in a short time frame.
I think it still is the perfect ending with Tex coming back one more time to Caboose saying goodbye and Griff, Simmons, and the rest getting what they want...it became the ending it deserved.
Yes, it was all too quick, but with the way Burnie talked, this was to be what Season 17 and 18 were supposed to be. Imagine if we got 2 seasons fulfilling this and then the show ending for good? Instead of the Shisno Paradox or the Zero crap, this would have been everything.
It is not the ideas that were bad, but rather they were rushed to fill it all in in one movie. Take any one of those plot points and you think "yeah, this works,"
Sarge dying? Check
Caboose bringing back Tex? Check
Tucker being the new Meta? Check.
Wash suffering from PTSD and coming to terms with everything? Check.
Farewell, RvB, I will miss the good ole days.
I feel like Wash, though. I didn't want to let go. I wanted to still be there and have fun, but everything must come to an end some time.

Facts imagine if Restoration was season 15-17 with Burnie Burns writing it. Because Meta Tucker plot wise makes absolute sense than Blue's & Red's being the original & Time Travel God's.

I thought the pacing of this season was a little weird, but overall I really enjoyed it! I thought it was a fun way to end the series and say goodbye.
my only real complaint is Sarge. He died running away from a blue and they buried him in the same spot as last time. his body is going to slowly sink into the cave under the bace.
not to mention he might be alive. Donuts suit automatically locked when he’s close to death and muted him. Sarge could be alive, Unconscious, hurt, and slowly sinking under the bace.
the first meta kept going even with the same injury and only died after drowning. i wouldn’t be surprised if they were so shocked they never took of his helmet to check his pulse
You know what's weird about Sarge death is why we're the RVB audience expecting his death to be a joke?
RVB is all about comedy but why should Sarge death have comedic effect?
It's like people weren't taking the film too seriously enough to even care they just wanted a callback about his grave back in BGC.

It doesn’t have to feel grand or be a callback, yet it feels like he should have died saving everyone in a grand battle in a last stand. I suppose feeling cheated is the point. That’s why it works so well. We can feel the pain with them.
I like his death. It's a fitting sendoff for his character. His most notable character trait is his absolute hatred for the Blues, genuine hatred in the early seasons that slowly gets replaced with a sort of pretend-enemy status as the seasons go on since that's the only way he can cope with the fact that his military career is a lie. So it fits that what gets him killed in the end is being both figuratively and literally backstabbed by a Blue for helping another Blue.

@@wivyrn There's also the fitting contrast between how often Sarge has either declared its a good day to die, or generally states his intentions to die bravely in battle.
In comparison, his actual death is sudden and almost anticlimactic in a fashion. He doesn't have a grand last stand, and he doesn't go out firing into the enemy. He just gets stabbed, with no enemy in range to hold off, or people to defend.
After all, if he had died in battle, he wouldn't have the chance to give his farewells. He wouldn't have been able to metaphorically and *literally* pass on the mantle to Simmons, and he wouldn't have been able to admit to Grif that he always believed in him.
It's honestly beautiful that Sarge, the guy who's had multiple gags fixated on the concept of a manly last stand and dying in battle goes out quietly and suddenly. That he spends his last moments just confiding in and cherishing his fellow men, the people he's gone through hell and back with across all *kinds* of places throughout the galaxy.
I went into RvB in an odd way. I discovered Season 2 first at Gamestop on dvd and got it just cause, then actually watched it in the correct order in time for season 3 and from there I was hooked. Sadly I'm one of those who technically dropped out before Freelancer, satisfied with Church and Tex getting trapped in the storage unit. I kept watching, but that's where it ended for me. And like many of us, it got unbearable to watch.
So I watched Restoration thinking I was biting the bullet just to have closure from the original creators and honestly while it was off in a few spots, it hit enough of right notes that made me glad I watched it.

This season felt like it got stripped down, leaving us with the bare bones. Unlike the Halo series of the last thirteen years, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the framework of the story, or the acting, and everything actually made sense. The fight choreography was lacking, and Sarge standing in front of the door for no reason could have been done a little better, but I was genuinely floored by Tex's turnaround. I'm guessing that Caboose's earlier efforts with the memory unit in prior seasons failed because it needed more points of view. As for the voice actor--he did such a good job that I didn't notice the difference at all--except Caboose did sound slightly less stupid. I'm really astonished that, unlike most stories these days, it all works logically.

For someone who made a love letter to Red vs Blue... this is... a weird take. Let me put it this way.
When we refuse to watch something with our critical lens, sure we don't see the flaws but we also miss the themes. For example, Washington. Outside of the question "Why are we here" it could be argued that the other most prominent recurring theme in Red vs Blue is "iteration, and the failure to let go." This entire show began because of a man who couldn't let go.
And then things kept getting worse, or continuing onwards because every version of Church kept trying to find and bring back a version of Tex. Until finally he began to put a stop to it. First in the memory unit, and then in season 10 -- a scene which Church and Tex's final scene together calls direct reference to.
All of Wash's scenes in this season are related to this. To how someone else's pain has been forced onto him, how he's been made the victim of this cycle more than basically anyone else in the show, and how much he's lost as a result. Doc was actually one of the few friends Washington genuinely made. By the end of season 8, that's what the felt like. Them never having had more friendly scenes on Chorus together always felt weird to me as a result of that.
Anyway: The final moments of Washington in this season all tie back to that theme... Letting go. Do we let go entirely? Or do we hold on so tight we damage ourselves entirely? Yes, it's cool that they used the Halo 3 models but look past that and hear what they're saying. "Don't let go, not entirely" "Learn from their mistakes, pull from their strength." We see everything and everyone Washington has lost, with one of his friends, Doc, having been among them.
All leading to Carolina saying "Whatever we will be, we will be it together." Which also provides a bow to her arc that I never fully realized I wanted for her, but now feels like it's just... perfect. Because if The Director had just... sat down and had this EXACT conversation with a young Carolina after Allison died, and said those words to her... This show's events wouldn't have occurred.
Are there mistakes Restoration made? Yes!! MANY! But let's not treat Red vs Blue like it also wasn't a show that had themes, and ideas on its mind, that it presented exceptionally well.
We just need to give it the respect of putting our critic lenses on and be willing to risk seeing flaws because it means seeing themes.
I see your point! What I meant was that Red vs Blue is not an art house film or something. It’s a show that always leaned more on its comedy and heart than it did on having the most critically flawless story. Certainly that doesn’t mean it didn’t have its moments with deeper themes and heartfelt events as you outlined. Also I was specifically talking about the story issues and problems with continuity in Restoration, not the rest of the show.
The only thing I wasn’t happy about so to restoration was try at it felt like the advertising lied to us about church coming back
i prefer the Shisno Trilogy- it did a lot of character development for characters that doen't even appear here, like Donut and Sister

Make a live action red vs blue show
Singularity ending is better imo. The fact that donut, sister, lopez, and doc (yes i know he technically does but in my opinion it is a bad way to offscreen him) never got the closure just makes this a bad ending for me. The only good one is wash seeing how he finally let go of the past for the final time but i don’t think its worth it considering the fact that doc died just for this, for a 2 minutes closure on washington whole character, don’t get me wrong its good but its not worth it. Thank God this is an open ending just like s13 where this can be interpreted in 2 ways which is either this is the true ending or just a simulation obviously i choose the latter.
It would have been nice if they did an impression of a good season. It's just not worth the praise man
